Good news, at least on my front - it turns out the problem was with the Nvidia driver provided by Ubuntu. I installed EnvyNG (https://launchpad.net/envy) and updated the driver; this resolved my problem. I'm not sure how many other people this will help, but if it helps anyone, I'll be happy. --
