bigbrovar can you test this, I am currently stuck on OS X till such a
time as correct installation of Linux on an EFI powered Mac Mini 2011 is
possible (timeframe for this should be ca. F16 Beta, or roughly 2
months).

[Bug 808509] Re: SRU: Stop kswapd consuming 100% CPU when highest zone is small

2011-07-11 Thread David Nielsen
From the posting: The reproduction case is almost always during
copying large files that kswapd pegs at 100% CPU until the file is
deleted or cache is dropped.

I believe I've seen this behaviour on earlier hardware than sandybridge,
I can trigger it with good reliability using abocks image-writer to
create a liveusb version of the GNOME3 isos (from gnome.org) however the
hardware is question unfortunately died recently. Any large file copy
operation should trigger it on sandybridge according to Mel though..

[Bug 808509] [NEW] SRU: Stop kswapd consuming 100% CPU when highest zone is small

2011-07-10 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

SuSEs Mel Gorman fixed yet another kswapd consuming 100% CPU issue. This
one is most obvious on Sandybridge hardware but is expected to affect
other setups as well. Affected releases should be Oneiric and Natty.

Original posting:
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1106.3/00161.html

Commits upstream in Linus´s tree:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=08951e545918c1594434d000d88a7793e2452a9b

While Mel has recommended these for -stable it does not appear that
gregkh has picked them up for the 38.9 nor 39.4 releases yet.

[Bug 789982] [NEW] SRU: Fix kswapd 100% cpu usage in common scenerios

2011-05-29 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

There exists a quite common scenerio especially on low end machines
wherein kswapd can take up 100% CPU and stall the machine for a
considerable amount of time. Luckily a well tested fix for this problem
has just been merged into the kernel tree and I believe the fix has been
queued for -stable review as well.

Please consider applying this to the kernel in -proposed.

[Bug 604699] Re: Music purchased from the Ubuntu One Music Store does not appear in music library

2011-03-31 Thread David Nielsen
Jono, I believe my comments in #3+4 still stand. You should ask
Directhex regarding the libubuntuone problem, it seems like your best
option at this stage considering that the library watcher change would
likely not be accepted at this stage upstream and nobody has stepped up
to write it.

I seem to be experiencing this on Natty. I installed a pt-br keyboard on
an Asus EeePC 1002HA for my parents in law to use, however I cannot make
the question mark \ backslash button work with any of the Brazilian
layouts in the keyboard selector. It defaults to 105 keys intl.

[Bug 739251] [NEW] support identi.ca accounts logged in via OpenID

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

My identi.ca account is activated using Launchpad as the OpenID

[Bug 604699] Re: Music purchased from the Ubuntu One Music Store does not appear in music library

2011-03-01 Thread David Nielsen
This would depend on extending the library watcer which isn't to my
knowledge on anyones to do list. However i believe the core of the
problem is that the ubuntuone# bindings has a bug which Rhythmbox' U1MS
implementation depends on. If we could get this fixed so the interface
actually works as advertised. I think Jo Shields (directhex) is the man
to ask if I talk complete bull.

[Bug 712366] [NEW] grub drops into grub rescue with file missing message on btrfs install

2011-02-03 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

Using the Feb 2nd 2011 daily-live image (x86_64) to test the btrfs

(probably the kernel image but it is not specific). Meaning such an
install is rendered unbootable

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

The #86 issue, at least using the GStreamer package only, seems to be
confined to Banshee. Totem seems fine. I will file this to upstream
Banshee for examination.

Actually I am seeing the #86 issue with the PPA on Natty today which
only pulls in the Gstreamer package (as there is a newer PA in Natty
than the PPA).

[Bug 696301] Re: Samsung Galaxy S detected but cannot be connected to

2011-01-14 Thread David Nielsen
I compiled the latest libmtp from git and now the device shows up in
Nautilus but mtp-detect still gives errors.

david@sagan:~/Projekter/libmtp$ mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.0.4

Listing raw device(s)
Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=68a9) is a Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959.
   Found 1 device(s):

Attempting to connect device(s)
PTP_ERROR_IO: failed to open session, trying again after resetting USB interface
LIBMTP libusb: Attempt to reset device
LIBMTP PANIC: failed to open session on second attempt
Unable to open raw device 0
OK.

The device should be a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 but now it is detected
as a different model.. odd

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

2011-01-06 Thread David Nielsen
The Pulseaudio package seems to be causing the issue. In Banshee it
plays a song X, loads the next X+1, skips it then loads and plays X+2

debug output from Banshee:

[1 Debug 01:03:44.616] Track Terry Pratchett - Feet of Clay 067-117 (on Feet of
Clay) 00:05:09.219
[file:///home/david/Musik/Terry%20Pratchett/Feet%20of%20Clay/67.%20Feet%20of%20Clay%20067-117.mp3]
had playtime of 307628 msec (307sec), duration 309219 msec, queued: False
[1 Debug 01:03:44.619] OnEventChanged called with StartOfStream. Replacing
current_track with pending_track: Feet of Clay 068-117
[1 Debug 01:03:44.934] TrackStarted: Feet of Clay 068-117

GST_STATE_NULL
[1 Debug 01:03:45.594] Player state change: Playing - Idle
[1 Debug 01:03:45.642] Track Terry Pratchett - Feet of Clay 068-117 (on Feet of
Clay) 00:05:07.965
[file:///home/david/Musik/Terry%20Pratchett/Feet%20of%20Clay/68.%20Feet%20of%20Clay%20068-117.mp3]
had playtime of 308715 msec (308sec), duration 307965 msec, queued: False
[1 Debug 01:03:45.992] Querying model for track to play in off:Next mode
[1 Debug 01:03:46.017] Player state change: Idle - Loading

Now clearly the last had playtime is a lie as the data shows it ran
for around a second not 308 seconds.

Banshee's GStreamer shim:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/banshee/tree/libbanshee

Also in this case gapless playback is enabled, however this does not
appear to have an impact on the issue.

[Bug 697699] [NEW] Uncaught crash when importing DVD as image

2011-01-05 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Currently in Natty I am seeing a crash in Nautilus that is uncaught by
Apport.

(likely requires libdvdcss)

1) insert DVD
2) in the Computer nautilus view right click DVD and select copy disc.
3) set as an image
4) when finished, insert new disc.
5) Now for some reason you need to hit reload or the copy disc option does not
appear
6) Click copy disc

Now Nautilus crashes, however the DVD can be imported once Nautilus has
been restarted.

Why this is uncaught by apport I don't know, also launch Nautilus in a
terminal does not provide any helpful output.

In dmesg this seems to appear after every crash.

@David

The PPA currently contains an older version of the gstreamer packages
than is in Natty. Any hope for an update. Also do you have any ideas
regarding the infinite repeating of one track issue I mentioned above
which only occurs with your patched packages.

We don't yet know if it is best to fight the rewinds in GStreamer or
PulseAudio. Additionally I don't think we actually have upstream for
either one confirming that this fix what we want.

Indications seem to be that either package is a good target for the fix.

[Bug 504550] Re: Add genre filter pane

2011-01-01 Thread David Nielsen
The developer responsible for the Genre feature has been through a
change of jobs and moving to a different country and has been
unavailable for some time. However he has started working on Banshee
again recently, while this bug is high on his personal todo list there
is a mount of bug reports needing attention from him.

If Ubuntu feels the need to ship something, there is a genre browser
patch, but Alex seems to have plans for something more. You can always
ship the few lines of code if Alex doesn't find time to finish the
feature the way he wants.

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

2010-12-20 Thread David Nielsen
Using the natty packages I am seeing problems raising or handling the
required event for changing songs in Banshee and Totem. It seems to be
down to the pulseaudio package but I will conduct more testing. Note
that my network performance in Natty currently is about 1kb/s due to
some weird bug so feedback may be some time coming.

Is anyone experiencing similar problems on Maverick?

To reproduce:

1) load up totem or banshee
2) queue up 2 songs
3) play through or fastforward near the end of song x allowing it to reach the
very end on its own.

Now you'd expect song x+1 to start playing, however it does not.

[Bug 688781] Re: Please update to 3.7.3 or 3.7.4 in Maverick

2010-12-13 Thread David Nielsen
I would frankly prefer a well tested rollout of 3.7.4, cherrypicking the
specific commits that fix this seems.. problematic given upstreams
tools.

Regardless nobody has reported any regression in Banshee or outside of
it in all the time we have recommended users upgrade to 3.7.3+. Nothing
in the commit logs for SQLite seems overtly scary and much of it
downright desirable.

I think providing we can get this in -proposed and leave it till comfort
is found to unleash it as a stable update things will be great. I would
be happy to help point users who report bugs to Banshee to testing
procedures, and have them provide feedback. I am however categorically
not subjecting myself to Fossil to cherrypick any patch(es), it is time
away from handling Banshee bugs I cannot afford nor a task I am at all
qualified to do, I am not after all the SQLite maintainer. I am merely
looking to fix a case of Ubuntu making Banshee broken in my role as
upstream bug triager and developer.

SQL queries are embedded in the code. All that should be needed to
reproduce would be a Banshee 1.8.0 database.

Only the 3.7.3 change should strictly be needed as users have reported
improvements with just 3.7.3 (which is also what Laney states was the
first SQLite 3.7.x release without regressions he was aware of).

Seems like we have a candidate, I don't have a maverick machine handy
would I have plenty of users. A build with that enabled would be very
helpful, I can point users towards it and see if their problem is
solved, have them report back here.

[Bug 688525] [NEW] On multi protocol account setups I show up in the buddylist

2010-12-10 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

On setup with multiple accounts in Empathy, e.g. MSN, Gtalk and Local
people, I find that when all are online I have a person registered on my
buddy list who is in fact me. Considering that I know I am online and
that if any of the accounts experienced connection problems, the system
would tell me, that shouldn't be present.

[Bug 688534] [NEW] Videos played in simplified view should adjust control size according to video size

2010-12-10 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Videos played in simplified view should adjust control size according to video
size.

Currently the video UI in simplified mode ends up with large bars around the
video to accommodate the controls. This makes it impractical e.g. to watch a
small video in 1:1 mode with the window in Always on top mode if the WM allows.

(Reported upstream, tracked here for papercut evaluation)

[Bug 688781] [NEW] Please update to 3.7.3 or 3.7.4 in Maverick

2010-12-10 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sqlite3

In Banshee we are seeing a number of severe performance problems with
the SQLite 3.7.2 which is shipped in Maverick (like we did with 3.7.1
and 3.7.0 before it). These are massively improved with 3.7.3, and the
changes for 3.7.4 do not seem harmful in casual testing during
development and bug triaging Banshee on Natty so I should suggest
bringing it up directly to 3.7.4 in compliance with the advice on
SQLite.org currently available.

A sample of the type of bugs you can make disappear for us:

I have been advice that this needs to go through something Ubuntu calls

[Bug 684693] [NEW] Aero peek like functionality for the launcher

2010-12-03 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Right now I am required to click launcher icons to see active windows.
It would be really nice if I could just hover them and get thumbnails
displayed which if hovered would bring a peek of the windows to the
front and if click brought the windows to the front.

[Bug 683766] [NEW] no launcher nor top panel displayed

2010-12-01 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When I start Unity I see no launcher, though it does seem to be loaded
as there is an all black dock sized strip where it should be which I
interact with by clicking blindly to launch applications. Nor is there a
top panel.

I am using nouveau gallium but Compiz runs excellently in the classic
desktop and also launches in a working state in the unity session.
