[Bug 1452004] Re: Pulseaudio network stream gets recurrung short interruptions

2016-08-14 Thread Dirk Seidel
I'm now on 16.04 and the problem still persists. It even got worse, as
now, the short dropout happens exactly every 2 minutes.

[Bug 1510998] Re: Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

2016-06-09 Thread Dirk Seidel
The workaround is to disable sna.

Create the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

with the following content:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Card0"
 Driver "Intel"
 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Same problem here. Everything worked fine in 15.10, but I have had the problem
before. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly when it disappeared. It might
have been after the update to 15.10.

According to comment #32 in bug #1510970 it might help to upgrade to kernel
4.3. I just tested this but unfortunately got a segfault again after only a few
minutes...

[Bug 1510998] Re: Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

2015-11-02 Thread Dirk Seidel
Why is the importance changed from Critical to High? I am experiencing
3-5 crashes per day and am not aware of any workaround. This is more or
less an unusable system and I am seriously thinking of downgrading
again.

Johan Tol, have you tried to get a backtrace like I mentioned in #8?
That way it works without problems.

[Bug 1510998] Re: Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

2015-11-01 Thread Dirk Seidel
I'm not sure what you mean with "kernel call trace".
The first entry in syslog which is related to the crash mentioned in #13 is

Nov 1 12:53:06 gondor org.a11y.atspi.Registry[4315]: XIO: fatal IO error 11
(Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server
 ":0"

But this is not always the same. See attached syslog file (#2) for the three
events at
Oct 28 15:56:36
Oct 28 12:06:58
Oct 28 09:08:51

[Bug 1510998] Re: Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

2015-11-01 Thread Dirk Seidel
I already had two crashes today, but no specific xorg file. One of the crashes
happened at 12:53:06 according to syslog. Only one file in /var/crash, namely
_usr_bin_akonadi_maildispatcher_agent.1000.crash is related to that crash and
occurred at 12:53:08 according to the crash file.
Unfortunately I am not really able to reproduce any crashes. It seems more
likely to happen when I watch videos (flash or vlc), but is not restricted to
those circumstances.

Sorry, now I know what you mean: log messages from #3.
These appear at completely different times, so probably they are unrelated to
the crashes (see again syslog in #2). I mentioned them because they also
involve the intel graphics, so who knows...

[Bug 1510998] Re: Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

2015-10-30 Thread Dirk Seidel
I tried to get a backtrace according to "Already running programs" for X from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

I started gdb on the first virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1). After
executing "continue" in gdb, I can still switch between the different
consoles, but after typing Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to the X session,
the system is completely frozen (the virtual console is still visible).

Am I doing something wrong?

[Bug 1510998] [NEW] Xorg crashes with segfault on 15.10

Public bug reported:

I updated my system from 15.04 to 15.10 yesterday. Since then the X

Unfortunately I have no clue how to reproduce the segfault. The last
crash happened while I was reading some document and I did not push any
button, moved the mouse or anything...

There doesn't seem to be an usage issue in Vivid, but after an uptime
of only three days the filesize of Xorg.0.log is already 116MB due to
those error messages...

[Bug 1452004] [NEW] Pulseaudio network stream gets recurrung short interruptions

2015-05-05 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

I use pulseaudio to stream music over wifi to a Rasberry Pi 2 at 192kb. Exactly
every 5 minutes there is a short dropout in the stream. This is always followed
by the following warning in plamashell:
networkmanager-qt: void
NetworkManager::AccessPointPrivate::propertiesChanged(const QVariantMap)
Unhandled property LastSeen
which comes from the corresponding function in accesspoint.cpp. See (line 211):
http://api.kde.org/frameworks-api/frameworks5-apidocs/networkmanager-qt/html/accesspoint_8cpp_source.html

I am running on Vivid with kubuntu-ppa-ubuntu-backports-vivid.

[Bug 1437867] Re: xorg synaptic driver errors

2015-04-07 Thread Dirk Seidel
The behaviour usually worsens after using the system for a longer time.
As I cannot run on a live system for a longer period, this is hard to
say. I will report after the upgrade to Vivid.

Errors are still produced in Vivid Daily Build, though it seems that the
two/three finger taps and the jumping of the mouse pointer gets better.

[Bug 1437867] Re: xorg synaptic driver errors

2015-03-31 Thread Dirk Seidel
I updated the BIOS:

gondor:/etc# dmidecode -s bios-version dmidecode -s bios-release-date
V1.14
01/08/2015

Unfortunately it has no influence on the touchpad behaviour. The errors
showing up are still like the ones logged in
XorgLog.txt/xserver.errors.txt

[Bug 1437867] [NEW] xorg synaptic driver errors

2015-03-29 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

My touchpad is behaving strangely (As far as I remember it only appeared after
some update in Utopic).
Using a two or three finger click, it needs several tries till it actually
accepts the click. Sometimes the mouse pointer jumps to a different location
on the screen when clicking with two or the fingers.
Whenever the touchpad is used, errors get logged in /var/log/Xorg.0.log which
seem to be related to the synaptic driver.

Approximately once every week my X server crashes with a segmentation
fault. First the screen turns black and after ~30 seconds the login
screen appears. In this case the Xorg.0.log ends like this:

[Bug 1172094] Re: xorg synaptic driver crashes

2015-03-26 Thread Dirk Seidel
I'm running Kubuntu 14.10 and I am still experiencing the bug.
For me it does not seem to be related to suspend/resume, at least it happens
long after a resume. Also, there was never a particular high load on the
machine. In my case it seems to get triggered by clicking on a link which then
gets opened in the Chrome browser, but unfortunately it is not reproducible.

The screen turns black and after some time the login screen appears.
Xorg.0.log.old contains:

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2015-02-11 Thread Dirk Seidel
I compiled the current kernel (3.16.0-30-generic) from utopic with the
commit mentioned in #55 more than a week ago. Never ran into the problem
again, so the commit seems to solve the problem at least for me.

I have attached a patch file which works for the 3.16.0-30 kernel. The easy way
to compile the kernel can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
Just apply the patch before compiling the kernel with
patch drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c intel_display.c.patch

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-31 Thread Dirk Seidel
Bernhard, sorry, my bad. I left out one important step. Before compiling you
should also edit the file linux-3.16.0/debian.master/changelog and change the
version number in the first line to, e.g., 3.16.0-30.40+hidfix
Without this, the updater tries to update the newly compiled kernel, even
though it has the same version number. Also, there was a kernel update from
3.16.0-29 to 3.16.0-30 sometime within the last 24 hours which still does not
include the patch.
If you still want to do build the new kernel, delete the old source, update the
system and redo all the steps to compile the kernel including the above
addition. And remember that you will have to do this every time there is a
kernel update.

2015-01-30 Thread Dirk Seidel
Great that it works.
Concerning 14.04, I think the bug was not present there, but I'm not sure (see
bug description above).
Kernel versions =3.17 do include the patch, so with Ubuntu 15.04 latest, the
bug will be gone. But hopefully, the patch will be included already in updates
for 14.10.

@Joseph Salisbury: please, apply the patch (before the next kernel update?):

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-30 Thread Dirk Seidel
Hi Bernhard,
yes, this is how it should be done. You can store the patch-file in the
linux-3.16.0 directory. Then your point 4 is exactly what you have to execute.

But why do you want to compile the kernel? You said that Odie's
workaround worked for you. It should also work with your new install and
it is easier than the real fix. You would have to recompile every time
there is a kernel update. I only do this because I still had problems
with the KDE settings of the touchpad.

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-30 Thread Dirk Seidel
So here is the complete fix:

build a new kernel with the patch (see #36). Don't worry, it's very easy! Got
it from here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
Tested for the current kernel in 14.10

Get the source:
apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)
cd linux-3.16.0

replace the attatched file in drivers/hid/i2c-hid/

Build the kernel:
fakeroot debian/rules clean
fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic

this takes some time.

cd ..
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-* linux-image-*

Reboot.

Done!

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-28 Thread Dirk Seidel
I just installed the 3.17.8 kernel. You can get the deb's from here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17.8-vivid/

For a 64-bit system you need
linux-headers-3.17.8-031708-generic_3.17.8-031708.201501081837_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.17.8-031708_3.17.8-031708.201501081837_all.deb
linux-image-3.17.8-031708-generic_3.17.8-031708.201501081837_amd64.deb

and install the files with 'sudo dpkg -i linux-*'. If you want to remove
it again just do 'sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.17.8-* linux-
image-3.17.8-* sudo update-grub'

This version of the kernel includes the patch mentioned in #36. The
touchpad works flawlessly now, including the KDE settings!

Is there any chance that this patch will be included in 14.10?

And does anyone know how security updated are handled for kernels obtained from
here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
Does the latest version of the 3.17 kernel always include the relevant updates?

@ tbreustedt: did you also remove the driver first (rmmod hid_multitouch)?
Also, you could try the same with i2c-hid:
sudo rmmod i2c-hid
sudo modprobe i2c-hid

Instead of odie's script you can also try the following for a permanent
solution:
sudo touch /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module
sudo chmod 755 /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module

edit the file and insert
SUSPEND_MODULES=$SUSPEND_MODULES i2c-hid

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-25 Thread Dirk Seidel
Unfortunately. at least for KDE with customized settings for the
touchpad, it is not a satisfactory fix (see #36). As long as I don't
find a way to reload KDE settings via konsole I have to click through
the menue to properly restore the touchpad...

[Bug 1393079] Re: Touchpad not working after suspend/resume

2015-01-23 Thread Dirk Seidel
Executing xinput on my laptop (Acer Aspire V Nitro) gives:
  SYN1B7F:01 06CB:2970 UNKNOWN id=14 [slave pointer (2)]
for my touchpad.

From
http://www.adamdrew.net/?tag=kernel
I found a potential kernel patch which might solve the problem:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=109571cf3ec78a39477eedd6b11927f52cbcb1e8

I only tried reloading the i2c-hid module and this worked for me. Only
the KDE settings for the touchpad are screwed up after that. Going into
KDE settings and click apply, everything is fine again.

[Bug 1324136] [NEW] AirTunes support unusable

2014-05-28 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

Streaming to an airport express box with AirTunes (pulseaudio-module-
raop) worked fine from 11.04 till 13.10. Since the upgrade to 14.04
streaming is unusable because of stuttering (the streaming breaks down
for fractions of a second or longer many times during a song). My setup:
Kubuntu, phonon-backend-gstreamer, amarok. With phonon-backend-vlc the
stuttering is even worse.

I downgraded pulseaudio-module-raop from 1:4.0-0ubuntu10 (14.04) to
1:4.0-0ubuntu6 (13.10), but it doesn't help. My attempt to downgrade all
pulseaudio/phonon related packages resulted in a broken sound system,
even though the installation of the older packages succeeded. In the end
I downgraded to 13.10 again :-(

** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 1080640] [NEW] cups cannot connect to printserver in Quantal

2012-11-19 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

I have configured cups to use a printserver in ~/.cups/client.conf:
ServerName 141.xxx.xxx.xxx

Everything worked fine in Precise with cups 1.5. Since my upgrade to Quantal

[Bug 1033669] Re: compizconfig causes python to segfault in quantal

2012-11-15 Thread Dirk Seidel
I have the same problem as fejes. When I use the python interactive
shell I get:

Python 2.7.3 (default, Sep 26 2012, 21:51:14)
[GCC 4.7.2] on linux2
Type help, copyright, credits or license for more information.
 import compizconfig
 ctx = compizconfig.Context()
compizconfig - Info: Backend : ini
compizconfig - Info: Integration : true
compizconfig - Info: Profile : default
Speicherzugriffsfehler (Speicherabzug geschrieben)

So disable_show_desktop does not seem to be the problem here, at least
if the setting is not activated by default ( I have deleted all compiz
configuration files in my home directory).

Up to now I have no clue how to configure - and so use - compiz at all.
Using KWin as a workaround is no real good option for me...

[Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-07-11 Thread Dirk Seidel
Hi,
I was using the version from the PPA with no problems at all. Unfortunately,
compiz was updated yesterday (e.g. compiz-core:amd64 from
0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2 to 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.2). And now the flicker is
there again!?!?!
Could you please have a look at that.

[Bug 1008018] [NEW] amarok: pause/resume cause maximum volume

2012-06-02 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

After pausing a song, when resumed the volume is set to the maximum value
regardless of the previous setting.
This behavior started after the upgrade to Precise and only appears with the
phonon-backend-vlc and does not happen with phonon-backend-gstreamer.
As my volume is usually set to ~30% and the stream goes to my stereo with a 4
sec. delay (using Airport Express), this bug is really annoying.

[Bug 909022] Re: Various akonadi processes use 100% CPU and 200% RAM at every KDE session startup

2012-04-15 Thread Dirk Seidel
There is some explanation here:
http://blogs.kde.org/node/4503

In my case it was not enough to delete $HOME/.local/share/akonadi, I
also had to delete $HOME/.config/akonadi and then restart akonadi and
update the akonadi configuration. Everything is fine again now.

If this happens to a newcomer to Linux, he or she will most probably be
lost and will be sitting in front of an unusable system, at least if
there is no second computer to look for a solution to the problem...

[Bug 909022] Re: Various akonadi processes use 100% CPU and 200% RAM at every KDE session startup

2012-04-14 Thread Dirk Seidel
I ran into this problem this morning. Everything was fine on the first
boot. Then I did a hard switch off of my computer (this was not related
to akonadi). After starting it again akonadi now fills up the memory
very quickly.

Unfortunately disabling akonadi permanently is no option for me as I use
kmail for all my mails which relies on akonadi. So at the moment I do
not have access to any of my e-mails, which is a disaster and I have to
find a solution to this as soon as possible.

[Bug 898451] Re: Unable to start ccsm (segmentation fault)

2012-02-14 Thread Dirk Seidel
After a compiz updates today I tried to run ccsm again. Unfortunately it still
does not work, but something changed. In addition to the output stated in the
initial bug report, I get lot's of
(ccsm:27947): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_qdata: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
before the segmentation fault. I don't know if this is related to the problem.
Also, the ccsm window appears for a little less than a second before the
segmentation fault.

[Bug 918035] [NEW] adduser not working with nis

2012-01-17 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

I have installed NIS on our servers (Ubuntu Server 10.04.3, all updates
installed). Everything is working fine, except for one thing.

I added nis in /etc/pam.d/common-password:
password [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so obscure sha512 nis

Users can now change their passwords on any machine using passwd in the usual
way. This works fine.
The problem arises if I try to change passwords for root or for a user as root.
passwd asks for NIS server root password:, but at that point I have to enter
the root or the users(!) password, depending on which password I try to change.
So I am not able to change passwords as root if I don't know the users
password.
In addition, if I try to add a user with adduser, it is not possible to set the
users password at all. At the stage where passwd is executed an entry for the
new user in /etc/shadow exists, but is disabled with a ! in the password hash
field. It seems that nothing works for NIS server root password:. I have
tried the root password and simply enter.

[Bug 898451] [NEW] Unable to start ccsm (segmentation fault)

2011-11-30 Thread Dirk Seidel
Public bug reported:

When I start ccsm from the console I get:

This also happens with fusion-icon with the result:

 * Detected Session: kde

Segmentation fault

I tried to manually disable all the plugins in
.kde/share/config/compizrc.unity, but the error remains. Also deleting
all compiz configuration files from my home directory doesn't solve the
problem.

packages are available for many compiz components, but not for the ccsm
