[Bug 382705] Re: docky grouped menu titles are too narrow / truncated

2011-04-08 Thread Dominic Evans
Why did you feel the need for such a rude derogatory comment? If you'd
looked carefully you'd have seen that it was originally raised as an
issue 'years' ago and was raised against gnome-do. It's hardly my fault,
nor is it 'LOL' worthy that it hasn't been looked at in that time.

Perhaps you could do something useful and confirm if docky still fails
to satisfy the defect or not?

[Bug 719302] [NEW] [wishlist] package lib32stdc++5 for 64-bit systems

[Bug 708045] [NEW] [software-center] `unattended` == PornView

2011-01-26 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

This may not necessarily be considered a bug in software-center, as it
is mostly just displaying content that exists in the Ubuntu package
archives, but I thought I should raise this as a potential issue to
consider as this genuinely just happened today :-)

In the office at work, someone asked me how can I get Ubuntu to
automatically install all security updates for me?

So I told them about the 'unattended-upgrades' package, which would
cause this to happen in the background. They eagerly fired up software-
center to see if they had installed the package or not and typed
'unattended' into the search box. Immediately they were confronted with
this at the top of of a very short list (complete with 'icon'):

PornView

PornView is an image and movie viewer/manager with thumbnail previews.
Additional features includes thumbnail caching, directory tree views,
adjustable zoom, and fullscreen view. Slideshows allow for _unattended_
presentation of images for hands-free viewing. Pornview is written
 using GTK+.

Now, I'm far from being a prude, but multiple questions arise from this:

1) Should such an app be included in universe when Ubuntu is pushing for
inclusion in office workplaces and in schools? At the least, judging from the
description, it sound like it should be pushed out to multiverse really?
2) Should software-center provide some sort of 'safesearch' option to prevent
certain apps from being displayed by default?
3) ...

Any thoughts?

[Bug 648676] [NEW] software-center sorts 'Provided by Ubuntu' by display name, everything else by package name

2010-09-27 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

The right-hand pane in software center is always sorted alphabetically.

However, for the 'Provided by Ubuntu' department, these are sorted
alphabetically by display name (and each item is displayed as 'Display
Name' with a short description underneath). This is how I would expect
them to be listed.

For the partner repository, PPAs and other sources, the right hand pane
is always sorted alphabetically by the APT package name, even though
'Display Name' (from the package description) is the prominently
highlighted text. Each item is displayed as 'Display Name' with the
package name underneath.

IMO, these should all sort by display name. It looks rather strange to
see a jumbled mess of package names for PPAs, after seeing cleanly
sorted items under the 'Provided by Ubuntu' department.

[Bug 637262] [NEW] texlive-publishers has dependencies on files texlive-bibtex-extra but doesn't even recommend it

2010-09-13 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

At least one documentclass in the texlive-publishers package, the
American Psychological Association format (apa.cls), has a dependency on
a citation format (apacite.sty) that is only available in the texlive-
bibtex-extra package.

texlive-publishers' debian/control should at the very least have a

better still have a direct Depends entry for it.

[Bug 390364] Re: unable to connect to newer Mac OS X computers using ARD 3.1+ or bonjour screensharing

2010-08-25 Thread Dominic Evans
Good news from Jonh Wendell (upstream). A working patch has been
received and committed to enable support for connecting to Apple Remote
Desktop servers using their proprietary authentication scheme.

This should naturally be fixed in a future release of gtk-vnc and
vinagre.

This was fixed in gtk-vnc trunk (bug 570284), and the fix will be released in
 the next version of vinagre.

[Bug 622588] Re: [kvm] pci_add_option_rom: failed to find romfile pxe-virtio.bin

2010-08-23 Thread Dominic Evans
You may be correct that it is an innocuous error, (I'm not using PXE
boot on my VMs so don't see any otherwise missing functionality) but
afaik it never used to appear on lucid and now appears on maverick
packages of kvm so its technically a regression.

Having investigated the issue further it seems the `kvm-pxe` package
contains this bootroom and installing it makes the warning message go
away, so I'm not sure why its not an automatic depends for qemu-kvm?

[Bug 622588] [NEW] [kvm] pci_add_option_rom: failed to find romfile pxe-virtio.bin

2010-08-23 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

using 'if=virtio' on -drive and 'model=virtio' on -net previously worked
fine on earlier maverick packages

on recent package updates I am now seeing this warning about

[Bug 593477] Re: Use VP8/WebM as the default video codec/format

2010-06-15 Thread Dominic Evans
I think you'll find that the official ffmpeg trunk has only had vpx
encoding for around 12 days, and webm muxing for about 8 days. Maverick
is still on ffmpeg 0.5.1 (0.5.2 is latest official release) and Ubuntu
tracks releases rather than svn snapshots.

I'd hence hypothesis that the bugs you've raised again 'project
(Ubuntu)' packages are all invalid until a) (at the very least) ffmpeg
and gstreamer have made official releases with vpx and webm support and
b) the upstreams for each of the projects have similarly made releases
with support for vpx and webm either through their own direct linking
against libvpx etc., or via ffmpeg/gstreamer prereq

[Bug 571760] [NEW] dusttheme button ordering does not match light-themes in 10.04 LTS final

2010-04-29 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Since 2010-04-01 the button ordering of the light-themes was changed to
be (from left) close, minimize, maximise

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-

The version of dust that shipped with the 10.04 LTS final build still
has the older maximise, minimize, close ordering that the light-themes

[Bug 305286] Re: fails to playback ogv produced by recordmydesktop

2010-04-19 Thread Dominic Evans
not ideal, but the workaround for posting recordMyDesktop videos to
YouTube is to losslessly remux the ogg from recordmydesktop into .mkv
using mkvtoolsnix and then upload

i.e.,

$ sudo aptitude install mkvtoolnix
$ mkvmerge -o theora-vorbis-sample.mkv theora-vorbis-sample.ogg
$ gnome-open http://upload.youtube.com/my_videos_upload
$

Follow the usual upload procedure using the .mkv as input.

Successfully results in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dhz97zwO8Y

qemu-common does not correctly symlink /etc/qemuif{up,down} to the
matching scripts located in /usr/bin/

# Description

qemu-if{up,down} used to be directly installed into /etc, but recent
qemu-kvm changes seem to have refactored this so that they are layed
down by qemu-common in /usr/bin and then they are meant to be symlinked
according to the package.

$ cat debian/qemu-common.links
usr/bin/qemu-ifdown etc/qemu-ifdown
usr/bin/qemu-ifup etc/qemu-ifup

This doesn't appear to be working.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 535060 ***

bug 535060 includes a patch for updated translations from launchpad

the new German translation for this tooltip is:

#: src/rmdStrings.py:52
msgid
Select the video quality of your recording.\n
(Lower quality will require more processing power,\n
so it's recommended, when encoding on the fly,\n
to leave at 100)
msgstr
Wählen Sie die Videoqualität der Aufnahme.\n
(Niedrigere Qualität braucht weniger Rechenkraft;\n
die Einstellung 100 ist damit die Empfehlung, wenn\n
in Echtzeit kodiert werden soll.)

Closing this bug as a duplicate.

2010-03-09 Thread Dominic Evans
Updated bug to note that gtk-recordmydesktop.desktop only currently has
translations for English and French, all other languages are missing.

Ideally the source should be patched to grab this string out of the po/*
translation files as part of the build and populate it automatically.

** Summary changed:

- gtkRecordMyDesktop contextual menu description is not translated in Italian
+ gtk-recordmydesktop.desktop menu file is only translated in English and French

[Bug 534386] [NEW] [patch] gtk-recordmydesktop 'select window' does not include frame on compiz

2010-03-08 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-recordmydesktop

This patch was already accepted upstream in June 2009 [1]. I thought I'd
already submitted it to Ubuntu as well, but suddenly noticed it is not
included in the package shipping in lucid.

It should just be manually dropped into debian/patches and added to the
debian/patches/series or added using `quilt import`.

Tested and successfully working for me for the last 8 months or so.

[Bug 531315] Re: Eclipse crashes intermittently when interacting with the UI

2010-03-03 Thread Dominic Evans
I believe this is the same issue as described in bug 528324

i.e., using command completion etc. seem to crash eclipse

it seems to be reproducible by launching a fresh workspace and then
attempting to close the 'welcome' tab

1) $ eclipse -data `mktemp -d`
2) Close the 'Welcome' tab
3) Observe crash stacktrace in terminal

upstream seem to thing that updating the termcap (the 'workaround' in my

2009-12-23 Thread Dominic Evans
Definitely seems to be a problem with gcj's compilation to bytecode of
eclipse-3.5.1+repack~2/eclipse-3.5.1/plugins/org.eclipse.swt/Eclipse SWT
PI/common_j2se/org/eclipse/swt/internal/Library.java

Have attached a simple test class to show the difference between a fresh
compile of an identical IS_64 check, versus invoking the SWT loadLibrary
compiled bytecode. This was done with the IBM 1.6 JRE

$ javac -cp

[Bug 428309] Re: RAOP devices are not recognised

2009-11-18 Thread Dominic Evans
I knocked up a quick howto of the steps I used to get my AirTunes
working just now.

[Bug 481866] [NEW] genisoimage: add feature to create md5sum.txt/sha1sum.txt/other checksum file

2009-11-13 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Copied verbatim from a really old upstream wishlist request on mkisofs.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=338830

Ubuntu CDs presumably pre-calculate the MD5SUMs before putting the file
in the iso, but as this feature request states: it is wasteful to have
to read all the files once to generate the checksum and then again to
generate the iso, it'd be good to support on-the-fly creation.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM%20on%20CD

---

It is very convenient to be able to check that the contents of a CD or
DVD are still intact by having an md5sum.txt file at the root of the
filesystem. Creating the file can, however, be somewhat cumbersome, and
also requires reading all the data twice: once for generating the checksums,
then to generate the disk image. It would be wonderful if mkisofs could
do it on the fly. Something like this:

mkisofs -checksum-file md5sum.txt -checksum-type md5 ...

Obviously it would be good to be able to specify other checksum types
than MD5, but even just that would be good enough: this feature is meant
for checking that there is no disk corruption, not as a safeguard against
tampering or counterfeiting, and MD5 is certainly good enough to detect
corruption.

I would not even be against creating the checksum file automatically,
unless there is already a file by that name, but this may be too fancy
for many people.

To clarify, since someone asked me about this on irc: the point of the
checksum file is to make it possible to check that a disk and its files
are still working after, say, the disk has been stored for several years
in a cabinet or used as the cat's scratching post. If there is a proper
md5sum.txt file one can do this:

cd /cdrom md5sum -c md5sum.txt

That's quite a convenient way of doing it.

[Bug 464783] [NEW] `qemu -ncurses` 80x25 vs gnome-terminal 80x24

2009-10-30 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

A minor (but irritating) mismatch in default sizes when running qemu
using ncurses rather than SDL.

gnome-terminal defaults to a 80x24 console / window size, whereas
starting up `qemu -curses` creates a 80x25 (640x480) console. Thus the
bottom row is not visible unless you resize your gnome-terminal window.
Unsure if this counts as a gnome-terminal or qemu-kvm bug, but it is a
usability mismatch.

[Bug 457277] [NEW] grep does not print warning when recursively grepping stdin

2009-10-21 Thread Dominic Evans
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grep

A common user error pattern is to call a recursive grep and miss off the
trailing '.' for current directory. This causes grep to wait
indefinitely for stdin, but users will presume it is just taking a long
time to search and will leave it running

$ grep -r PATTERN
...
...
...indefinite pause

This is on Ubuntu karmic running the latest GNU grep 2.5.4

Contrastingly, on a Apple Mac running OS X and grep (GNU grep) 2.5.1 a
helpful warning is printed in this case which immediately guides the
user to their mistake

$ grep -r PATTERN
grep: warning: recursive search of stdin

I presume this is a custom patch that has been applied to the grep
binary that ships with OSX (rather than a warning message that has been
purposefully removed), therefore I suggest this warning message is added
to the default code base.
