[Bug 784549] Re: Mono: Style: Cyrillic Ghe Г has incorrect bottom serif and looks strange
Confirming, the new variant without serif is better. [Bug 501708] [NEW] cannot print Yelp page
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp Trying to print the results of a search in the Ubuntu Help Center Yelp fail - when going to the File menu the Print This Document is disabled and if Print This Page is used all one gets is the text that happens to be in the search box at the top. As an example, search for shutdown and click the very last link to shutdown manual page. There is no way to print the man page itself. [Bug 399478] [NEW] Evince Document Viewer: annotated PDFs do not display properly
Public bug reported: PDF with highlighted text displays instead with the highlight covering over the text. Used Apple Preview on Mac OS X to highlight certain lines of text with a yellow highlight. Evince has the yellow almost completely covering the text. The text is yellowed-out (like blacked-out) rather than highlighted. Installed acroread (from partner/commercial repo.). Displays the highlight correctly. Note: A rectangle annotation added around an image in Preview is displayed properly in Evince. PDF annotation/commenting capabilities should be added to the desktop environment to match Apple. Adobe Acrobat Standard is US$299.00 and is too much to pay for just this set of features and Acrobat Standard is not available for Ubuntu. Mac OS X is US$129.00 and now includes this feature. Use case: University student, receives reading assignments in the form of PDF or Word docs posted to a wiki or URLs to public HTML or PDF sources. Student is comfortable with paper-less online reading but would like to be able to mark up text as one would a paper text book. The case of Word docs annotation is met by OOffice. Web pages can be printed to PDF using built-in print to PDF in CUPS. Once have PDFs, need to be able to annotate them. I realize being able to annotate/comment PDFs may seem like a feature request that would be low in a very long list of feature requests; however, in the bigger picture, I have read how a major goal for Canonical/Ubuntu Desktop is to surpass Apple and this is a feature Apple has. Before, by including PDF generation both Ubuntu and OS X were more even in this feature area and both surpassed Windows. While Ubuntu users could easily Print-to-PDF (from a web page for example when encountering a receipt that says print this for your records when storing it on disk rather than printing it on paper) or generate PDFs from OOffice, Windows users had to purchase PDF generation software. This is still a nice feature Ubuntu has over Windows. But now Apple has gone one level more by adding the basic PDF commenting/annotating. For the feature request, if the only Ubuntu users who would really want this annotation feature could pay $$$ for it, then one approach would be to instead have Canonical convince Adobe to make Acrobat Standard available for Ubuntu, perhaps with the purchasing being handled through the Canonical store along with the Fluendo, Parallels, and PowerDVD products. In the fact this is not feature request, it's a bug. xournal and kpdf are showing the file in question like they should, but evince fail. ** Affects: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Evince Document Viewer: annotated PDFs do not display properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/399478 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 391318] [NEW] enable atime on input devices
Public bug reported: The simplest method to detect USB keyboard and mouse activity used to be to check atime on the input device files. Current applications are checking /proc/interrupts as a workaround, but this doesn't work if /proc/interrupts doesn't mention keyboard or mouse or if those interrupts are shared with other devices. I modified sleepd upstream to call select() on all of the event files in /dev/input. However, that requires root and threading. The big application that we want to run that needs this to work properly is Condor. Without atime on input devices, it falls back on /proc/interrupts which doesn't really work. So, we'll need to patch the kernel ourselves. The consequence of not patching the kernel is that compute jobs will start while a session is active. The Condor developers wrote an 18 line patch that updates atime on 6 input drivers. We would appreciate if you would consider including this patch in the standard Ubuntu kernel patch set. The overhead is not noticeable since it is only for a few files that are only in memory. http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/input_patch-2.6.10 Another option would be for X sessions to update the idle time in utmp at least once per minute. Condor and sleepd check utmp. ** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- enable atime on input devices https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391318 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 389641] [NEW] graphics performance suddenly drops for new windows
Public bug reported: We are having a problem on ubuntu systems with nvidia graphics cards. We have seen this now on our development system with Dapper Drake with an nvidia quadro fx 560, and on Hardy Heron with nvidia quadro fx 570 and nvidia quadro fx 3700. The application was developed a decade ago on SGI IRIX and from 2004 to 2006 on redhat linux. The problem we see is a sudden loss of graphics performance, such as the displaying of an image after some exercise of the program displaying images. Existing windows continue to display as they had before. But in a new window the graphics is real slow. You can watch the system draw the image from the bottom up (using an Open GL call). If we restart the application all new windows continue to draw slowly. We have to reboot the computer to restore the prior graphics performance but once again after a short time the problem reoccurs. It is as if hardware acceleration is turned off or something. I don’t know where to begin to figure out what is happening. The program displays medical CT scans. We don't see the problem with redhat. It was the same computer. nvidia driver was 180.44 in both cases. Which makes me think it is a bug with ubuntu. But that is all the evidence I have to go on. I continue to see the problem with ubuntu 9.04 and the nvidia driver 180.44 on a nvidia quadro fx 3700. If I do all two dimensional drawing with only X calls instead of OpenGL calls, the problem goes away. Switching to X calls at least solves my immediate problem. I am only submitting this if there is any interest on determining if this is in fact a ubuntu bug. I would not know how to go about proving it. ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- graphics performance suddenly drops for new windows https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389641 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 388636] [NEW] [hardy] KDE applications crash on clients with CIFS mounted home directory
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase I can reproduce this bug 100% of the time. Many KDE applications crash with the following output from the command line (K Interactive Geometry (kig) is an example here and 'user' is a user logged in via his LDAP account): WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile /home/KAS/user/.kde/share/config/kigrc.lock Other KDE apps like kgoldrunner, ksokoban, and kbruch also produce the same error. This is only happening with users who have logged in via their LDAP account on clients. If you log in using an account local to the machine, all of these applications run just fine. We are using Ubuntu 8.04.2 on all client machines and same with the server. Just to make sure, I created a brand new account (teststudent) on the server and tried running ksokoban and kig on a client. The error just loops until I kill it with ctrl-Z. The files in question do exist. Here is the output of the folder: teststud...@gnu6:~/.kde/share/config$ ls -l total 3072 -rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 23 2009-04-30 12:16 kconf_updaterc.lock -rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 14 2009-04-30 12:19 kigrc.lock -rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 19 2009-04-30 12:18 ksokobanrc.lock The original bug is against LDAP, but I don't think that's related. [Bug 249881] Re: Hardy slapd server is not supporting sasl/external authentication
Same result here. I copied the files to /etc/ssl/certs and /etc/ssl/private, modified /etc/ldap/slapd.conf to show the new places of the files, /home/ubuntu/.ldaprc was also modified to point to /etc/ssl/certs/ca.cert. There wasn't group ssl-certs, so I created it, (vigr, vigr -s, GID 114) and added user openldap to the group. The directory /etc/ssl/private was 700 root:root, so I changed it to 750 root:ssl-cert, otherwise slapd cannot start. Running slapd by /etc/init.d/slapd start doesn't show EXTERNAL. slapd in that case is started with group and user openldap. [Bug 122751] System beep in OpenOffice warning
Private bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Open Office has started to make warning beeps. For example, in Calc if I paste into a cell which already has data in it, then I receive a visual warning, which is ok, and a loud beep from the machine. How can I turn off the audible warning in OpenOffice? System beep is turned off in System/Preferences/Sound. ** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Private -- System beep in OpenOffice warning https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 122751] Re: System beep in OpenOffice warning
The bug is the same as bug 12424, with relation to the customer. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/12424 -- System beep in OpenOffice warning https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 55804] Re: /proc/kcore not openable
Reopening, Wouter Hanegraaff from OpenOfficeNL is complaining about it. Citation: Yesterday, I tried searching /proc/kcore when a crashed application didn't save it's data before crashing. Although this has worked many times before, it didn't right now: all I got was a tiny bit of data, followed by the error Operation not permitted. How to reproduce: - start ubuntu dapper, newest kernel - type: cat /proc/kcore /tmp/file as root This was reported as https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.15/+bug/55804 Denying access to /proc/kcore is not a security feature, it's a bug! I've rescued lost data many times by just searching /proc/kcore. Please fix this in the next kernel update for ubuntu dapper.
