[Bug 784549] Re: Mono: Style: Cyrillic Ghe Г has incorrect bottom serif and looks strange

2011-11-30 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Confirming, the new variant without serif is better. Bulgarian doesn't
use Ґ and Ӷ, but IMO they look better than the old ones, especially the
new Ґ, old variant doesn't look like Г at all.

[Bug 501708] [NEW] cannot print Yelp page

2009-12-30 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Trying to print the results of a search in the Ubuntu Help Center Yelp
fail - when going to the File menu the Print This Document is disabled
and if Print This Page is used all one gets is the text that happens
to be in the search box at the top.

As an example, search for shutdown and click the very last link to
shutdown manual page. There is no way to print the man page itself.

Selecting different links instead of the shutdown manual page do
allow you to Print This Document for some of them.

[Bug 399478] [NEW] Evince Document Viewer: annotated PDFs do not display properly

2009-07-14 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

PDF with highlighted text displays instead with the highlight covering over the
text.
Used Apple Preview on Mac OS X to highlight certain lines of text with a yellow
highlight.
Evince has the yellow almost completely covering the text. The text is
yellowed-out (like blacked-out) rather than highlighted.
Installed acroread (from partner/commercial repo.). Displays the highlight
correctly.

Note: A rectangle annotation added around an image in Preview is
displayed properly in Evince.

PDF annotation/commenting capabilities should be added to the desktop
environment to match Apple. Adobe Acrobat Standard is US$299.00 and is
too much to pay for just this set of features and Acrobat Standard is
not available for Ubuntu. Mac OS X is US$129.00 and now includes this
feature.

Use case:
University student, receives reading assignments in the form of PDF or Word
docs posted to a wiki or URLs to public HTML or PDF sources. Student is
comfortable with paper-less online reading but would like to be able to mark up
text as one would a paper text book. The case of Word docs annotation is met by
OOffice. Web pages can be printed to PDF using built-in print to PDF in CUPS.
Once have PDFs, need to be able to annotate them.

I realize being able to annotate/comment PDFs may seem like a feature
request that would be low in a very long list of feature requests;
however, in the bigger picture, I have read how a major goal for
Canonical/Ubuntu Desktop is to surpass Apple and this is a feature Apple
has.

Before, by including PDF generation both Ubuntu and OS X were more even
in this feature area and both surpassed Windows. While Ubuntu users
could easily Print-to-PDF (from a web page for example when encountering
a receipt that says print this for your records when storing it on
disk rather than printing it on paper) or generate PDFs from OOffice,
Windows users had to purchase PDF generation software. This is still a
nice feature Ubuntu has over Windows. But now Apple has gone one level
more by adding the basic PDF commenting/annotating.

For the feature request, if the only Ubuntu users who would really want
this annotation feature could pay $$$ for it, then one approach would be
to instead have Canonical convince Adobe to make Acrobat Standard
available for Ubuntu, perhaps with the purchasing being handled through
the Canonical store along with the Fluendo, Parallels, and PowerDVD
products.

In the fact this is not feature request, it's a bug. xournal and kpdf
are showing the file in question like they should, but evince fail.

[Bug 391318] [NEW] enable atime on input devices

2009-06-23 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

The simplest method to detect USB keyboard and mouse activity used to be
to check atime on the input device files. Current applications are
checking /proc/interrupts as a workaround, but this doesn't work if
/proc/interrupts doesn't mention keyboard or mouse or if those
interrupts are shared with other devices. I modified sleepd upstream to
call select() on all of the event files in /dev/input. However, that
requires root and threading.

The big application that we want to run that needs this to work properly
is Condor. Without atime on input devices, it falls back on
/proc/interrupts which doesn't really work. So, we'll need to patch the
kernel ourselves. The consequence of not patching the kernel is that
compute jobs will start while a session is active.

The Condor developers wrote an 18 line patch that updates atime on 6
input drivers. We would appreciate if you would consider including this
patch in the standard Ubuntu kernel patch set. The overhead is not
noticeable since it is only for a few files that are only in memory.

http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/input_patch-2.6.10

Another option would be for X sessions to update the idle time in utmp
at least once per minute. Condor and sleepd check utmp.

[Bug 389641] [NEW] graphics performance suddenly drops for new windows

2009-06-19 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

We are having a problem on ubuntu systems with nvidia graphics cards. We
have seen this now on our development system with Dapper Drake with an
nvidia quadro fx 560, and on Hardy Heron with nvidia quadro fx 570 and
nvidia quadro fx 3700. The application was developed a decade ago on SGI
IRIX and from 2004 to 2006 on redhat linux. The problem we see is a
sudden loss of graphics performance, such as the displaying of an image
after some exercise of the program displaying images. Existing windows
continue to display as they had before. But in a new window the graphics
is real slow. You can watch the system draw the image from the bottom up
(using an Open GL call). If we restart the application all new windows
continue to draw slowly. We have to reboot the computer to restore the
prior graphics performance but once again after a short time the problem
reoccurs. It is as if hardware acceleration is turned off or something.
I don’t know where to begin to figure out what is happening. The program
displays medical CT scans.

We don't see the problem with redhat. It was the same computer. nvidia
driver was 180.44 in both cases. Which makes me think it is a bug with
ubuntu. But that is all the evidence I have to go on. I continue to see
the problem with ubuntu 9.04 and the nvidia driver 180.44 on a nvidia
quadro fx 3700. If I do all two dimensional drawing with only X calls
instead of OpenGL calls, the problem goes away. Switching to X calls at
least solves my immediate problem. I am only submitting this if there is
any interest on determining if this is in fact a ubuntu bug. I would not
know how to go about proving it.

[Bug 388636] [NEW] [hardy] KDE applications crash on clients with CIFS mounted home directory

2009-06-17 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

I can reproduce this bug 100% of the time. Many KDE applications crash
with the following output from the command line (K Interactive Geometry
(kig) is an example here and 'user' is a user logged in via his LDAP
account):

WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile
/home/KAS/user/.kde/share/config/kigrc.lock

Other KDE apps like kgoldrunner, ksokoban, and kbruch also produce the
same error.

This is only happening with users who have logged in via their LDAP
account on clients. If you log in using an account local to the machine,
all of these applications run just fine.

We are using Ubuntu 8.04.2 on all client machines and same with the
server.

Just to make sure, I created a brand new account (teststudent) on the
server and tried running ksokoban and kig on a client. The error just
loops until I kill it with ctrl-Z.

The files in question do exist. Here is the output of the folder:

teststud...@gnu6:~/.kde/share/config$ ls -l
total 3072
-rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 23 2009-04-30 12:16 kconf_updaterc.lock
-rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 14 2009-04-30 12:19 kigrc.lock
-rwxr--r-- 1 teststudent student 19 2009-04-30 12:18 ksokobanrc.lock

The original bug is against LDAP, but I don't think that's related. I
reproduced the bug using the same environment, but haven't tried to
reproduce it without LDAP authentication. The result is the application
newer appears on the desktop, and is producing the errors on the
terminal:

WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile
/home/KAS/stu/.kde/share/config/kconf_updaterc.lock
WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile
/home/KAS/stu/.kde/share/config/kconf_updaterc.lock
...
- cut -

After deleting manually the lock file the error appear again with new
lock file:

WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile
/home/KAS/stu/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals.lock
WARNING: Problem deleting stale lockfile
/home/KAS/stu/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals.lock
...
- cut -

The upstream bug is http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156759

Comments 19 through 36 look to be the most relevant ...
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156759#c19

Particularly comment 24 - http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156759#c24

For all users which can not wait for an KDE update. Here is a
workaround:

Add the option serverino when mounting a CIFS share. I tested this which
Samba 3.x on the server side. I do not know if this works with Windows on the
server side too.

...

Thanks for the tip. It solved the problem for me on two out of three
shares.

Just a warning though: According to the mount.cifs man page you should NOT use
this workaround if your share spans more than one disk partition on the server,
as that would give you duplicate inode numbers on the client (two files, same
mount, same inode number = trouble).

Public bug reported:

When saving the file with Save as dialog in gimp 2.6 in Ubuntu 8.10, and
change the name of the file, the dialog for choosing the image quality (jpeg)
appears after second click. In gimp 2.4 (Hardy) it appears in single click on
the Save button.
Way to reproduce:
1. open image in gimp, make a little change to it
2. open Save as dialog
3. type new, or change the name somehow
4. you need to click once, no matter where on the desktop, and second time on
the Save button for dialog to work
4a. you need to press Enter just once for the next step.

I can confirm this - empty trash folder, but the flash icon is showing
it's full. It can be related to case when some file is moved to the
Desktop via network workstation (MAC or Windows), it is not shown until
reboot/logout. Otherwise file is there and is accessible on the
terminal.

[Bug 232139] Re: [hardy] module-assistant fails to compile drbd0.7-module

2008-10-23 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
I can confirm that. My test give the same error. This is working in Gutsy,
module can be compiled, installed and loaded without a problem. It is not
working with Intrepid either.
Christian, what is your point to use especially this module? drbd is part of
the kernel now, and you can just load pre-build drbd module:
$ sudo modprobe drbd

[Bug 280468] Re: [Hardy] not possible to install if there is more than one LUKS encrypted partition

2008-10-09 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
This also leads to impossibility of creation of a swap space, as
installer demands for encrypted swap partition to be used. The system
should be installed without enabling swap, and swap file should be
created after installation, or encryption/LVM workaround should be used.

[Bug 280468] [NEW] [Hardy] not possible to install if there is more than one LUKS encrypted partition

2008-10-08 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

Installation fail when two or more encrypted partition are set in the
installation process. The same bug persists in i386 server and alternate
desktop installations. Steps to reproduce:
1. start the installation, create two partitions for encryption.
2. run Configure encrypted partitions. installation asks for formatting the
other partitions, and configuring encrypted ones, choose Yes.
3. after all ext2/3 partitions are formated, installation freezes when trying
to start the partitioner. The same bug can be seen in Gutsy.

Workaround: Use one encrypted partition and create LVM partitions on top of it.
Fix: Intrepid beta is working fine.

2008-09-15 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Similar problem here - two high end notebooks with nVidia 9800M GT
cards. Brightness hot keys don't work and possible brightness levels are
not available on either system.

ls /proc/acpi/video/

--- directory is empty

ls /sys/class/backlight/

--- directory is empty

Brightness can be adjusted in the BIOS and Windows on one system and
only in Windows on the second.

Tested 8.04.1 with the latest kernel and Intrepid with 2.6.27-2 and
2.6.27-3.

acpi will dim the display to sleep when inactive.

With nvidia-settings color brightness can be adjusted but not the
backlight.

The brightness can not be adjusted in kpowersave either. It says the
Your hardware currently does not support changing the brightness on
your display. This is the same as gnome brightness panel applet. I
think it's due to the inability to read LCD brightness data from /proc
and /sys interfaces.

Same result here. I copied the files to /etc/ssl/certs and
/etc/ssl/private, modified /etc/ldap/slapd.conf to show the new places
of the files, /home/ubuntu/.ldaprc was also modified to point to
/etc/ssl/certs/ca.cert. There wasn't group ssl-certs, so I created it,
(vigr, vigr -s, GID 114) and added user openldap to the group. The
directory /etc/ssl/private was 700 root:root, so I changed it to 750
root:ssl-cert, otherwise slapd cannot start. Running slapd by
/etc/init.d/slapd start doesn't show EXTERNAL. slapd in that case is
started with group and user openldap. Even when slapd was run manually
with group ssl-cert there wasn't EXTERNAL protocol listed as supported.
id for user openldap shows groups openldap and ssl-cert.

[Bug 249881] [NEW] Hardy slapd server is not supporting sasl/external authentication

2008-07-18 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

On our dapper machines, we use the sasl external mechanism for authentication
on slapd, the ldap server.
On hardy this doesn't work any more. Running an ldapsearch for example produces
errors messages.

hardy ldapsearch against hardy slapd:
$ ldapsearch -H ldaps://ldap
SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Unknown authentication method (-6)

and slapd (-d 256) says
conn=6 fd=16 ACCEPT from IP=100.9.0.234:45017 (IP=0.0.0.0:636)
conn=6 fd=16 TLS established tls_ssf=16 ssf=16
conn=6 fd=16 closed (connection lost)

Here, the client fails

fedora core 3 ldapsearch (ldap utils are linked against openssl) against hardy
slapd:
$ ldapsearch -H ldaps://ldap
SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Authentication method not supported (7)
additional info: SASL(-4): no mechanism available:

and slapd (-d 256) says
conn=5 fd=16 ACCEPT from IP=100.9.11.1:38962 (IP=0.0.0.0:636)
conn=5 fd=16 TLS established tls_ssf=16 ssf=16
conn=5 op=0 BIND dn= method=163
conn=5 op=0 RESULT tag=97 err=7 text=SASL(-4): no mechanism available:
conn=5 fd=16 closed (connection lost)

This shows that the server actually doesn't support the mechanism.

First it was suspected gnutls might not like certificates/keys generated
with openssl. But playing around with gnutls-serv and gnutls-cli using
the same files shows that gnutls works.

The search shows external is not supported by server:

supportedSASLMechanisms: DIGEST-MD5
supportedSASLMechanisms: CRAM-MD5
supportedSASLMechanisms: NTLM
supportedSASLMechanisms: PLAIN
supportedSASLMechanisms: LOGIN

apparmor is not running on the server.

The authentication is not working with neither when openldap user is a
member of ssl-cert group or not, i.e. has read permission on
/etc/ssl/private

2008-04-28 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
No freezes with nv driver so far, so the problem is related to 3D
drivers. Next step for me is to test this with vesa driver for couple
of days. As a workaround everyone can use non-3D driver for X-server. If
there is an issue with non-3D driver please update the bug.

[Bug 211318] Re: KDM hangs upon logout in Kubuntu 8.04

2008-04-26 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Confirmed.

OS: Kubuntu 8.04 after upgrade form 7.10
Video: Nvidia MX440-SE
driver: nvidia

The system freezes with compyz enabled and disabled. The problem is kdm
with 3D drivers, compyz is out fo scope here. Now testing with nv
driver, and later will test with vesa.

Remark: if you can get to the console ( via network or pressing Ctrl-
Alt-F1 ), restarting kdm (sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart) let you work
until next logout.

[Bug 92932] Re: Cannot unlock the session if the session is locked by screensaver or locked from start menu, KDE 3.5.6

2008-02-24 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
I have fresh Kubuntu 7.10 installation, and I have also the problem when
unlocking. The most strange thing is, I have no problem with that on a second
PC - it just works. The workaround can be found in ubuntuforums.org:
sudo chmod 4755 /usr/bin/kcheckpass

Still it is not clear why it's working on a second PC, the permissions
there are 755.

[Bug 122751] System beep in OpenOffice warning

2007-06-27 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Private bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Open Office has started to make warning beeps. For example, in Calc if I paste
into a cell which already has data in it, then I receive a visual warning,
which is ok, and a loud beep from the machine.
How can I turn off the audible warning in OpenOffice?
System beep is turned off in System/Preferences/Sound.

[Bug 55804] Re: /proc/kcore not openable

2007-04-18 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Reopening, Wouter Hanegraaff from OpenOfficeNL is complaining about it.
Citation: Yesterday, I tried searching /proc/kcore when a crashed application
didn't save it's data before crashing. Although this has worked many times
before, it didn't right now: all I got was a tiny bit of data, followed by the
error Operation not permitted.

How to reproduce:
- start ubuntu dapper, newest kernel
- type: cat /proc/kcore /tmp/file as root

This was reported as https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.15/+bug/55804

Denying access to /proc/kcore is not a security feature, it's a bug!
I've rescued lost data many times by just searching /proc/kcore.

Please fix this in the next kernel update for ubuntu dapper.
