[Bug 2064961] [NEW] Fails to install linux-headers-6.5.0-28-generic

2024-05-06 Thread Ed Johns
Public bug reported:

When attempting to install linux-headers-6.5.0-28-generic, I get the
following errors:

dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-headers-6.5.0-28-generic_6.5.0-28.29_amd64.deb
(--unpack):
error creating symbolic link './lib/modules/6.5.0-28-generic/build': Read-only

 /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-headers-6.5.0-28-generic_6.5.0-28.29_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

When I went looking for the build directory referenced in the message, I found
the following misspelling in the symlink. I am not sure if this is what is
causing the problem or a happy accident, because the target directory
/usr/src/linux-headers-6.5.0-28 exists, but
/usr/src/linux-headers-6.5.0-28-generic doesn't:

❯ ls -al /usr/lib/modules/6.5.0-28-generic/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 Apr 8 04:03 /usr/lib/modules/6.5.0-28-generic/build
-> /usr/src/linux-heders-6.5.0-28-generic

[Bug 768791] Re: isoinfo: Unable to find Joliet SVD (USB creator won't select ISO for creating boot USB)

2024-05-02 Thread Ed Gardella
The workaround has two parts:
1. Copy the .iso to your home directory
2. Change the file extension to .img

The first part is the key. If you now run usb-creator-gtk, it should
automatically see the ".img" file and pre-select it. If you use the
"Other..." option to find the file, it will fail.

I think the "isoinfo: Unable to find Joliet SVD" is a red-herring

Just did this in Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS

Graham - thank you for committing the fix, it's much appreciated. I'm
not too familiar with the typical process for the `-proposed` repos,
what's the timeline for the changes on `ubuntu/noble-proposed` being

[Bug 1939612] Re: pdl package in focal omits PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface

2022-06-06 Thread Ed J
bionic's libpgplot-perl used libpgplot0, a partially-compatible
replacement for PGPLOT based on Giza, instead of pgplot5. Nothing has
changed since then. pdl should not bundle any pgplot or binaries, since
that is not how packaging systems work. If one wants to use PGPLOT with
pdl, then one should install libpgplot-perl.

[Bug 1955916] Re: Bluetooth dongle rtl8761b

2022-01-04 Thread Ed
The problem is that the USB ID for this chip is not in the btusb module.
Many people report the same problem elsewhere, though it seems most want
to try and use a strange module from a random BT dongle manufacturers
website, which is just crazy. The proper thing to do is to add the USB
ID to drivers/bluetooth/btusb.c.

However, I am a bit lazy, so instead I just modified the driver in
place, writing over the ID of another realtek chip with this one (0x2550
0x8761), then strip the module to remove the signature:

sudo -s
cp /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/btusb.ko btusb.ko.orig
xxd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/btusb.ko | sed 's/ca04
0540/5025 6187/g' | xxd -r > btusb.ko.mod
strip --strip-debug btusb.ko.mod
mv btusb.ko.mod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/btusb.ko

Don't forget to also download firmware:

wget -O /lib/firmware/rtl_bt/rtl8761b_config.bin
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Realtek-OpenSource/android_hardware_realtek/rtk1395/bt/rtkbt/Firmware/BT/rtl8761b_config
wget -O /lib/firmware/rtl_bt/rtl8761b_fw.bin
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Realtek-OpenSource/android_hardware_realtek/rtk1395/bt/rtkbt/Firmware/BT/rtl8761b_fw

You have to disable secure boot to load the modified module, if you
didn't have it disabled already, and reboot. If already disabled you can
probably just do:

modprobe -r btusb && modprobe btusb

You also need at least kernel 5.8 I believe.

Hopefully the USB ID will be added to the kernel soon, as it's pretty
silly having to do this!

[Bug 1947121] [NEW] do-release-upgrade misidentifies boot disk

2021-10-14 Thread Ed Broadley
Public bug reported:

I ran do-release-upgrade to update Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04. This was done
remotely, so it was important that the system could boot up again.

At the point it tries to install grub to the MBR it fails as it
incorrectly identifies a USB connected drive as the boot drive. The USB
connected drive is /dev/sda, whereas the boot drive, where the MBR
needed to be updated, was /dev/sdb.

I do not know yet if the system can boot, but I ended up using a 3rd
party app called boot-repair, which deals with this situation better by
offering to install grub to the MBR of all detected disks.

Not sure what status to set this to, since I can't select "Won't Fix."
Maybe "Fix Released" or "Invalid?"

[Bug 1923515] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9500] New touchpad detected as "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse"

2021-05-05 Thread Ed Holden
I wanted to hold off until I was sure, but I've confirmed this was a
(second) hardware problem. Dell replaced my laptop's touchpad a second
time yesterday, and after deleting the device in Windows 10 and
refreshing, the OS detected the new touchpad fine. I reinstalled Ubuntu
yesterday and it's also working fine, with scrolling etc. functioning as
normal.

So basically, Dell gave me a laptop with a "broken hardware" touchpad
and improbably replaced it with a "bad firmware" touchpad. I appreciate
all the help with this issue, and I'll mark this bug resolved, and
update the other bugs.

Some takeaways:

1. Try other kernels / distros.
2. Try Windows (if available). Dual-boot would have been super handy in this
case, even if the Windows installation is for break-glass emergencies.
3. Dell only replaces broken hardware with the same model as the original, so
inconsistent hardware detection probably means bad hardware.

[Bug 1695763] Re: lots of pdl messages on Xenial Negative repeat count does nothing

2021-04-20 Thread Ed J
This patch was in PDL as of 26 Feb 2015, and main-released to CPAN as
2.008 on 24 May 2015. Seeing as it's 2021 and CPAN's PDL is 2.038, can
this bug be closed?

[Bug 1923515] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9500] New touchpad detected as "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse"

2021-04-16 Thread Ed Holden
Yes, I've been working on installing Windows, and also speaking with
Dell, whose support techs say a replacement touchpad should have been
the exact same model as the original (except not with a hardware
defect). I wanted to make sure they'd support the laptop, which came
with Windows, as well as see what device Windows detects.

Interestingly, Windows 10 has basically the same issue as Linux! I sees
a device called "I2C HID device" that has problems, and in that device's
status are the messages "The device cannot start (Code 10)" and "A
request for the HID descriptor failed." There's also a pointing device
called "PS/2 compatible Mouse" that is ... definitely not a PS/2 mouse.

So, I think Windows agrees with Linux and this might not be a kernel
issue after all. No amount of Dell Windows driver updates or Windows
updates resolves it, and a Dell tech spent a long time remote
controlling and testing with me. It looks like Dell replaced a piece of
bad touchpad hardware that had good firmware, with a piece of good
touchpad hardware that had bad firmware. I'm getting a *second*
replacement touchpad in about a week.

I can update this bug after the new one is installed and confirmed
working, and I reinstall Linux.

Thanks, Kai-Heng. I've installed linux-oem-20.04 and selected the new
kernel, 5.6.0-1052-oem, on boot. Unfortunately the behavior is
identical. The mouse still appears as "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse" with
all the same information (e.g., event3 in xinput). I checked dmesg and
the four lines you identified are still there with the OEM kernel:

** Description changed:

  I've been using Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell XPS 15 9550. The laptop's
touchpad had a hardware defect common to the model (nicknamed "wobble")
so Dell sent a tech to replace it. The new touchpad looks identical to
the original but the kernel doesn't correctly detect it. The device does
work, but appears to the kernel as a "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse," which
prevents the use of features like two-finger scrolling, disabling tap to
  click, and palm detection.

A good summary of my troubleshooting steps are here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1330555/touchpad-detected-as-ps-2-logitech-wheel-mouse-dell-xps-15-ubuntu-20-04

Importantly, I've tried a mainline kernel downloaded from Ubuntu
(5.11.12 and a 5.12.0 release candidate, whereas the current version is
a 5.8.0). I've also tried two bootable USB drives containing Ubuntu
20.04 and 21.04 (release candidate). Nothing has changed the device
detection or behavior. The issue is identical in the default Ubuntu
desktop and in Plasma. There are no touchpad settings in the UEFI BIOS.

- Per the touchpad detection instructions, I've attached the output of
- /proc/bus/input/devices, Xorg.0.log, and the `xinput --list` command. My
- suspicion is that Dell has ordered a brand new touchpad model for which
- there is no kernel driver; looking at the logs, the previous model was
- an elantech, but I'm not sure if the new one is as well.

[Bug 1917586] [NEW] Failed migration

2021-03-03 Thread ed
Public bug reported:

Hello,

There appears to be regressions in command1 and command3 tests that
don't fail to migrate in sid.

Currently rust-nix can't migrate either as it depends.

Thanks
Ed

[Bug 1917502] [NEW] sync from debian

2021-03-02 Thread ed
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Please can you sync rust-pleaser from debian. The package dependencies
were updated to fit with what is currently released in Ubuntu, otherwise
this package will not migrate to release.

The proposed change (sync from sid) will work would a dependency problem
that has prevented the package from migrating to released.

The benefit as I see it will bring a granular and memory safe
salternative for access control.

Should you choose not to, well, the sky wont fall, but it would be great
if we can get this package released.

Thanks,
Ed

[Bug 1908160] [NEW] gplaycli cannot run due to missing module immediately following install

2020-12-14 Thread Ed Novak
Public bug reported:

I ran sudo apt update and then sudo apt install gplaycli. The
application is installed, but then attempting to run the module results
in an error indicating a missing python module.

ed@ThinkPad:~$ sudo apt install gplaycli
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
gplaycli is already the newest version (0.2.10-1).

Typically, I would expect that any package I install using apt should
install all necessary modules / packages so that it can run.

Upon further investigation is appears that the issue is that gplaycli is
a python 2 program and I am using python3! Wow! The packages and
modules are all setup on my system for python 3.

Let me know if porting this package to python3 would be appreciated. I
would be willing to do it.

2020-06-08 Thread Ed Santiago
Public bug reported:

Commit 8789f910812afbf6b87dd371ee5ae30592f1423f ("support parallel
execution of tests") broke existing BATS behavior in which a test file
can set environment variables to be shared between subtests:

if [ -z "$MYSTATE" ]; then
do something
export MYSTATE=something-to-be-used-by-all-tests
fi

Attached is a reproducer. It passes in 8789f9108^ and, more importantly,
bats-core.

** Affects: bats (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2020-06-08 Thread Ed Santiago
Be sure to remove the statefile before invoking the reproducer:

$ rm -f /tmp/mystate;/usr/local/bin/bats -t env-lost.bats
1..2
ok 1 first test
# linecount is 2 (expected 1)
not ok 2 second test
# (in test file env-lost.bats, line 25)
# `false' failed

[Bug 1876379] [NEW] Screen is broken into triangles

2020-05-01 Thread Ed Attfield
Public bug reported:

After a new install of 20.04 the console display is broken into odd
distortions and triangles and weird colours. I'm guessing the window
manager is not working well with the graphic card, since it was fine up
to the point of the automatic login.

[Bug 1876372] [NEW] ubuntu-bug does not exit, does not launch browser

2020-05-01 Thread Ed Attfield
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04

While trying to report a problem with a messed up X display after a new
install, I logged in with ssh -X and ran ubuntu-bug with no arguments.

It didn't bring up a web browser, and it didn't finish until I hit
ctrl-C

Specifying a package did work for me (ubuntu-bug apport) to produce this
bug report.

[Bug 1798363] Re: i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1200:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (16/65535)

2020-03-30 Thread Ed Romana
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1813733 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813733

For my Assus Q304uak laptop, both the touchpad and the keyboard
misbehave. My default laptop Linux kernel options are organized in 6
families form 4.4 through 4.15.

After some time, for all kernels in the ranges 4.8, 4.10, 4.11, 4.13 the
keyboard will freeze.

My first, successful boot and keyboard stable kernel version is
4.4.0-70-generic, upstart. Other kernels tested in 4.4 also have a
stable keyboard

The touchpad misbehaves for all kernels tested.

A suspend–resume cycle restores the touch pad for short period of time,
a few minutes. Less reliably the key press sequences of ctrl-alt-f2 and
ctrl-left-alt-f7 also restores the touchpad for a few minutes if at all.

Fortunately the USB mouse ports function normally for all kernels used.

[Bug 1853895] [NEW] Entries in sudoers files that include * do not behave like shell globs

2019-11-25 Thread ed
Public bug reported:

When mistakenly used in the argument list it can expand to protected
content, such as /etc/shadow. Most users do not expect this.

The following example will permit 'username' to read /etc/shadow as the
* character accepts any character and spaces.

  username ALL=(ALL) /bin/cat /var/log/messages*

The patch adds the following style of argument matching that can
restrict the sudoers arguments to regex, thus allowing for additional
common logrotate suffixes.

  username ALL = (ALL) /bin/cat m{/var/log/messages(\.[0-9]+|-[0-9]+)?$}

This improves the security stance of sudoers entries through tight regex
matches which most administrators are familiar with.

[Bug 1654448] Re: Dell XPS 13 9350/9360 headphone audio hiss

2019-10-10 Thread Ed Saunders
I've recently just run into the same problem since recent updates, I've
had my XPS since October 2017 and am currently running Ubuntu 18.04.3.
No issues until last week. I think I may have selected "headset with
microphone" by accident once when inserting headphones without a
microphone, but no evidence that this was related; I just remember doing
it when I don't recall doing that before.

The initial workaround in this thread of updating "Headphone Mic Boost"
setting up one notch in alsamixer works for me, so I assume this is a
regression or was this never fixed?

[Bug 1837283] [NEW] [needs-packaging] scratchpad

2019-07-20 Thread Ed Novak
Public bug reported:

This is a meager python program I wrote recently based on a number of
proprietary and OS specific apps in the genre "notepad + calculator".
It is somewhat similar to https://soulver.app/ It is a desktop app
aimed specifically at Ubuntu users.

# scratchpad
Basic notepad app with some built in calculator functions written in python
using Tkinter.

[Bug 1825447] [NEW] 19.04 packaging is from master and not the ubuntu branch

2019-04-18 Thread Ed Bruck
Public bug reported:

It appears the code used in the 19.04 packaging of the appindicator is
from master and not the tagged ubuntu-19.04 commit from the ubuntu
branch. The master branch is not delivering scroll events, which stops
my application (radiotray-ng) from being able to adjust its volume
levels.

I've swapped out the code under /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions
/ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com/ with the ubuntu branch and scrolling
on an indicator icon works again.

I've filed an issue on github as well.

[Bug 1821670] [NEW] Non-cached calls to xdgRuntimeDirectory use wrong env. variable

2019-03-25 Thread Ed Bruck
Public bug reported:

xdgRuntimeDirectory uses wrong environment variable when called with a
null handle. My understanding is that it should use XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
instead of XDG_RUNTIME_DIRECTORY:

const char * xdgRuntimeDirectory(xdgHandle *handle)
{
if (handle)
return xdgGetCache(handle)->runtimeDirectory;
else
return xdgEnvDup("XDG_RUNTIME_DIRECTORY");
}

Calling with NULL returns a NULL pointer, because XDG_RUNTIME_DIRECTORY does
not exist.

[Bug 1814144] Re: installed calligra 3.0.1 but cannot find calligra stage

You can close this bug.

I compiled Calligra 3.0.1 from source, and CMAKE output:
"The following required product(set)s/features can NOT be built
APP_STAGE: Stage app (for Desktop) [[needed by: STAGE]] | No maintainer

So, I guess that is that.

[Bug 1814144] [NEW] installed calligra 3.0.1 but cannot find calligra stage

2019-01-31 Thread Ed Silkworth
Public bug reported:

Hi.

I am trying to install Calligra Stage 3.0.1 in Kubuntu 18.04 LTS.

I installed Calligra 3.0.1 using KDE's Discover.
Calliga Words and Sheets appear in the application launcher, but Stage does not.

I also tried sudo apt install calligrastage, but it made no difference.
In addition, I tried running calligrastage from Konsole, but the terminal
states: "calligrastage: command not found."

I imagine that if I install Calligra or Calligra Stage directly, then
Stage should appear in the application launcher and be executable from
the command line.

Did I do anything wrong?
Or, is the calligrastage package incomplete?

I would like to stick with the LTS release and am hoping to use Calligra
Stage 3.0.1, unless perhaps the package can be completed or Calligra
Stage 3.1.0 can be backported (if that's the correct term).

Thank you.

[Bug 1767223] Re: multilib selects wrong start files

2018-12-17 Thread Ed
> And no, it doesn't help to state "the bug is still there" without
addressing it.

And your reply to my 5 month old comment serves no purpose and in no way
helps either.

I am not in a position to do anything about this, so suggesting that I
should is not helpful. I am not familiar with the process, nor am I paid
to develop Ubuntu. They have people for that and I do not have the time.
I have done my part as a user by reporting the bug. Most active projects
do appreciate and address bug reports. It does seem strange to me that
the exception to that often seems to be commercially backed projects.

Source and pre-rolled packages are available to address the issue if
they so wish. If they want to keep distributing broken packages, then it
is frustrating for users but it is not my problem. If the package is not
going to be fixed, and given that as it stands it is completely non-
functional, it would actually be better from a user experience
perspective for it to simply be removed than to keep it live, in my
opinion.

In any case, why would I spend my time trying to get this fixed when I
have been using the compiler distribution directly from ARM reasonably
comfortably every day since I reported this bug? I need an arm-none
compiler for work, and I will take the fastest route to get one,
anything else is a waste of time when I have deadlines to meet. The
fastest and thus most optimal route for any user is to find an
alternative provider for the package, especially given that in this case
the next OS release will likely have fixed the issue anyway.

And yes, expressing my surprise that the completely broken package has
not been replaced with the fully working package is not particularly
helpful, but it is certainly not damaging. On the other hand, successive
experiences of broken packages and this type of interaction may move
some users away from Ubuntu in the longer term.

Previously, I installed Ubuntu 18.10 and then kernel 4.20. VLC 3.04 had no
success. And w-scan gave no results.
Now, I installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 and then kernel 4.20. The kernel-headers failed
to install. The play-function with VLC 3.03 did work well.
Perhaps it is not the kernel but something else. I am not an expert.

Re: [Bug 1790971] Re: package samba 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.2 failed to install/upgrade: installed samba package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2018-09-09 Thread Ed Rand
Nevermind :-) Restarted Samba again and rebooted again. Now Samba starts
automatically, so I guess problem fixed itself. Amzing!!! Mark it
“resolved”.
Continue to have problem of windows servers not being able to log on to Samba
share to do nightly sync for backup purposes (incorrect password) (Yes, I
added the smbuser and smbpassword too). Since desktops can and servers can’t
(all members of same windows controlled domain) I’m left with the conclusion
that the problem may have to be solved in the windows server environment, not
in Linux. I may just have to work around it. Too bad there is so much OS
divisiveness (sigh)!!! But that wasn’t the bug I reported anyway. Just
venting. So thanks! Sorry to waste your time.

Have a nice day.

2018-09-05 Thread Ed Rand
Public bug reported:

This after a reinstall of Samba. Sequence of events as follows:
Samba share was working fine.
Upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04.
Windows desktops could still connect to Samba share, but Windows Servers
(2012R2) were rejected with "incorrect password"
Tried numerous fixes, eliminated problems of interface or iptables being the
culprit.
Tried monkeying with smb.conf
Finally removed and then reinstalled Samba and started with a fresh smb.conf
As before, desktops connected, servers did not
Rebooted
Got this error. Now nothing works.

[Bug 1574300] Re: Could not load 'vboxdrv' after upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 [required key not available]

2018-08-25 Thread Ed Peterson
This is my first post. I don't like to post. However, I've used ubuntu
and a few other linux versions for more than 10 years. I used to be able
to build a VM, install ubuntu, and be running in about 30 minutes. Now I
can't do that in a day (or unfortunately, sometimes days, or even
weeks...!). I'm old school. Back in the day, if an install didn't work,
I'd discard it, select an alternative, and move on. This particular
problem, generating all this commotion, isn't quality work. I understand
linux is a volunteer effort, however frankly, what's the point if it
won't install, can't upgrade, and/or routinely breaks without warning
nor apparent reason. I've lost all trust in ubunu, and now am looking
for alternatives. This is a very sad commentary, routinely in past I'd
recommend and implement ubuntu as a solution with great confidence, now
I can't. I can't afford all the time and uncertainty in trying again and
again to use this anymore.

So, thank you all for the past ~10 years + of good, dependable code, and
Good bye!
