[Bug 1859754] Re: add ucm to make alsa/sof driver work under PA (variants of Lenovo X1 Carbon 7th, Dell cnl and cml machines)

2020-03-20 Thread Eddie Dunn
@hui.wang

I'm not sure that I should file a bug against the Linux kernel; My USB
headset works fine on 5.3.0-43-generic if I *don't* install libasound2
from your PPA.

When I plug in a headset with a mic in the 3.5mm port, it still seems to
use the internal mic instead of that of the headset.

I also get a lot of popping sounds in the 3.5mm headset when playing
audio, but that might not be related to this issue as I had that on
kernel 5.3.0-41 as well.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2015-03-27 Thread Eddie Dunn
I've read the comments defending the position that the -t parameter
should be ignored. I still don't understand. I'm dumbfounded.

I can honestly see no harm whatsoever in adding support for it.

There are plenty of use cases for which the default time out does not
work well at all. The current implementation violates the spec. Why are
you so stubborn?

[Bug 665932] Re: boot stops at resume: libgcrypt 1.4.5 for over 20 seconds

2014-09-09 Thread Eddie Dunn
I booted a Live CD and split my swap partition into two, leading to the
old UUID being invalid. Doing this makes boot hang at resume: libgrypt
x.x.x forever.

Some googling lead me here, but I could not find the file /usr/share
/initramfs-tools/hooks/resume, and could not try the solution suggested
in #11.

I eventually fixed the problem by assigning the correct UUID for my new
swap partition in the files /etc/fstab and /etc/uswsusp.conf, chrooting
into the Ubuntu root, and running `update-initramfs -u`, and everything
is up and running fine now, so no harm done.

However, I would suggest that a more informative error message be
printed, such as UUID 29581fa0-3814-11e4-a7d0-0002a5d5c51b not found,
instead of hanging indefinitely at boot, to prevent other people from
encountering the same problem in the future.

[Bug 1348668] Re: Unity lockscreen lets applications capture keyboard input

2014-07-28 Thread Eddie Dunn
Good to know. From the back of my mind, I can confirm that running
Firefox, vim, Terminator, or Gedit in the foreground does not affect the
lock screen. In other words the bug lies with the interaction between
Unity Lockscreen and Google Chrome.

Also, related to my previous comment, forget what I wrote there. I think
`workaround-screen-lock-malfunction_1_all.deb` is meant to fix something
else, and so is totally unrelated to this bug. I have had the issue
after installing it.

[Bug 1299549] Re: Dell XPS 9333 Headset jack not correctly detected

2014-04-15 Thread Eddie Dunn
I have tried plugging in a headset, headphones, and a mic. All of them
work as expected, given the right selection in sound settings. Knowing
anything about correct drivers, nodes, sequence numbers and pins are
beyond my knowledge, unfortunately.

With a headset plugged in, however, there is a problem with hearing
white noise, which I think is connected with the fact that it picks up
noise from the headset mic. That is another bug, though.

[Bug 1299549] [NEW] Dell XPS 9333 Headset jack not correctly detected

2014-03-29 Thread Eddie Dunn
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Plug a headset of the TRRS kind into your headset jack on the laptop.
2. Get bugged by the annoying Unknown Audio Device dialog _every single time_.

Expected behavior:

Ubuntu should just know that it's a headset jack. Barring this, the
dialog should remember my last choice, and stop bugging me, needlessly.

[Bug 1227571] [NEW] update-notifier-common.cron.daily does not respect proxy settings

2013-09-19 Thread Eddie Dunn
Public bug reported:

For a long time I have gotten annoying update messages every time I log
in, about flashplugin-installer not being downloaded correctly. I get
prompted if I wish to install, and upon clicking yes, a terminal flashes
on the screen. The installation likely fails, but there is no real way
to verify since the terminal is killed immediately.

I've managed to track it down to being a proxy error. Simply, the
update-notifier-common script in /etc/cron.daily does not respect my
workstation's proxy settings.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread Eddie Dunn
If policy prevents fixing broken behavior it seems to me said policy
needs to be amended.

[Bug 689733] Re: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread

2012-12-12 Thread Eddie Dunn
I think this is a really bad design decision. It forcefully jars with
my workflow of using multiple workspaces for the same application (a
browser in my case).

I.e., it's really easy to find the window you need on your current
workspace (in which case you really don't need the spread), but it's
decidedly difficult if they are spread across 9 workspaces, possibly
occluding each other.

Is there a way to make the window spread display applications from all
workspaces in 12.04? I'd appreciate it.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread Eddie Dunn
The thing you seem to forget, Sebastien, is that the core issue is this:
A hack was introduced that not only changed the default behavior for all users,
but -- more importantly -- also made it impossible to switch back to the
desired behavior.

In other words, mucking around with people's configs has already been
done. How about we own up to the mistake and fix it? The only reasonable
way is to revert the ugly hack, and repair the functionality of 'show
windows from all workspaces'. Users will have to update their key
bindings if they don't like that it's working again. It won't take them
more than a minute.

I can also add that I work in a corporate environment and everyone I
know who uses Ubuntu here is -not- happy about the hack.

[Bug 961977] Re: Launcher shows arrows for applications on all workspaces

2012-10-11 Thread Eddie Dunn
This is a horrible change. Now I have no way to know if there are other
windows of the same application open on other workspaces, unless I
manually go to every single workspace to check, since sometimes a window
of the same application but on a different workspace is hidden by some
other application window.

We either need to change so that Expo also activates Scale, similarly to
what kwin does, or retract this change as it really makes working with
applications on multiple workspaces a chore.

[Bug 690143] Re: Launcher - Implement workspace/launcher cross interactions

2012-10-11 Thread Eddie Dunn
Currently, there is no way to tell from the launcher icon that I have
windows of an application open in both workspace 1 and workspace 2.
This can prove to be very annoying. Consider this use case:

I open Firefox on workspace 1. I go to workspace 2 and open another
Firefox window, and then Nautilkus. I fullscreen the Nautilus window.

If I go back to workspace 1 there is no way for me to easily go to the
Firefox window on workspace 2. There isn't even a good way for me to
tell that I have two Firefox windows open, because on workspace 1 the
Firefox icon will only have one pip next to it. Even if I activate
Expo I won't see the Firefox window on workspace 2 since it is hidden by
the maximized Nautilus window.

There must be a better solution for this. Perhaps add a transparent pip
next to the opaque one, to signify that the application also has a
window on another workspace?

[Bug 1053570] Re: Alt+section does not work as expected

2012-09-22 Thread Eddie Dunn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1035668 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1035668

I don't believe it's a duplicate of bug 1035628 -- I have no problem
with losing focus when using alt+tab/alt+section.

However, it IS a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/unity/+bug/1035668.

[Bug 1053570] [NEW] Alt+section does not work as expected

2012-09-20 Thread Eddie Dunn
Public bug reported:

Reproduce:
Open two e.g. two Firefox windows. Use alt+section (key above tab, ยง on my
Swedish keyboard layout, ` on US layouts) to switch between the two different
windows.

What happens:
A graphical window switcher is shown, with an orange glow around the window not
currently focused. You release alt+section, since the orange halo leads you to
beleive the window you want to switch to is selected. This is false -- you are
instead taken back to the window you had focused when pressing alt+section.

If I hold alt and press section again, the orange glow will move to the
right _together with the window it was highlighting_. After doing this,
window selection graphics work properly. This means I have to double
tap section in order to switch windows within an application.

Also, if I type alt+section really, really fast, the switcher window
does not appear, and then the window switching works as expected.

Expected behavior:
1. Alt+section should highlight the window that will actually be selected.
2. I should not need to hold alt and double tap section to change to the next
window within an application. One section key press should be enough.

[Bug 790756] Re: The arrows that appears when there are too much tabs in Firefox have colors inverted when using Ambiance theme

2012-08-11 Thread Eddie Dunn
This is actually a very annoying bug for people with many active tabs.
It gives the exactly the wrong affordance for when you quickly wish to
discern whether you have more tabs or not in a certain direction.

[Bug 926357] Re: Windows can be hidden on another workspace

2012-06-12 Thread Eddie Dunn
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Not a papercut by what criteria? What disqualifies it? That it is not
trivially fixable?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the solution should be something along the
line of checking which Compiz viewport contains the largest area of the
application clicked on, then go there. It should be quite simple to do.

[Bug 86184] Re: Can't change cursor style using Compiz.

2012-06-03 Thread Eddie Dunn
While there doesn't seem to be an official way to change the cursor in
Ubuntu 12.04 (the Appearance section under System Settings is woefully
lacking in options), I do believe this issue needs to be addressed
because of the accessibility considerations mentioned above.

Is anyone aware of what it is that causes the discrepancy that if you
change pointer theme the default cursor remains the same but is updated
to the new theme when it changes appearance to become e.g a resize
cursor, or changes when it hovers over certain applications like
Firefox?
