I'm not at all sure whether the two are related, but directly after this
happened, compiz crashed hard and wouldn't restart again, and the
upgrade stalled. I had to reboot, after which I found myself in unity2d.
Am now trying to complete the upgrade as best I can and get back to a
workable state,

All your machines should replicate completely independently from
eachother, yes. So if neither of your machines are replicating
successfully, while other databases are, something about the dmedia
database is breaking replication. You could try removing it locally, to
see if that has an effect, but

the control panel rounds the numbers to something human readable:
2000MB/4.3MB = 0.002 MB = 0.02 GB, so rounding to whole integers,
0GB is correct, though not very informative.

While the desktopcouch-service zombie process is an unfortunate bug that
we're looking into, it is extremely unlikely to make your system freeze.
(Basically it's a child process that does not get cleaned up properly,
but it's not using anything much in the way of resources.)

This error is raised when desktopcouch fails to start couchdb within a
reasonable amount of time (10 seconds or so.) To determine why that
would be the case, it would be very helpful to have the following log
file:
~/.cache/desktop-couch/desktop-couchdb.log.1
