[Bug 1633839] Re: No symbol table. Press any key to continue

2016-12-04 Thread Ernst Zlo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1620678 ***

I had a CLEAN INSTALL on a NEW formatted partition (with gparted) and ran into
the same problem
Only special thing on my system is, that /home is on an extra partition.

(in the german Version instead of ""error: no symbol table. Press any
key to continue..." on can see "FEHLER: KEINE SYMBOLTABELLE. DRÜCKEN SIE
EINE TASTE... [adding the text that German speaking users find this on
search engines]

Solution of Alex N. worked for me: (LÖSUNG:)

sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot

no number after /dev/sda ! (KEINE ZAHL nach /dev/sda !)

[Bug 457976] [NEW] maximal mount count but no fsck

2009-10-22 Thread Ernst Zlo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I'm running Karmic on VirtualBox.
While messages tell me, warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck
is recommended nothing happens for several boots to solve this problem.

There is either no fsck launched automatically or if it is launched, it doesn't
reset the counter.
Some warning on the boot screen disappears that fast, that I (and I assume
nobody else) can read it. I'm not able to get a screenshot either g

And if I could read, it would be of no use anyway:
I'm not thrown back in a maintainance shell as expected.
There is no warning in GNOME after boot - which means IMHO that the normal
user will never see this warning.

I have 2 harddisks (one for Ubuntu, one for data) and an additional
VirtualBox drive, (shared directory) which is mounted with fstab during
startup.

I include a file with the warnings of the last 4 boots and the complete
protocol of the very last boot.

[Bug 432237] Re: difficult to recover from filesystem errors

2009-10-13 Thread Ernst Zlo
Scott,
I'm totally impressed, with the today's update the problem is solved.
As there was an upgrade to kernel (2.6.31-13.45) there would have been a
Superblock issue. - and was not.
And even my VBd is mounted correctly.

Congratulations and thank you verry much.

I still miss a VWD button (Very Well Done) in the alpha and beta
environements, so that you don't always only hear complaints ;-)

2009-10-12 Thread Ernst Zlo
Next round g
I went back to a version of Karmic where I could boot with the VBd.
I added your repository and manually made a
sudo apt-get install mountall

I made a ez_mt_before.log

I booted (hang)

I removed the VBd from fstab via life CD

I booted again. (no VBd mounted)
I did NOT make a mout -a this time but instantly
sudo mountall --debug ez_mt_after.log 21
and the VBd was mounted without a problem - of course, because the VirtualBox
Guestadditions are running.

[Bug 432237] Re: difficult to recover from filesystem errors

2009-10-09 Thread Ernst Zlo
Hello Scott,
I'm one of the 5%.

VirtualBox shared folder is to blame
(which I mount in my /etc/fstab with the line
extras /media/xtra vboxsf uid=1000,gid=1000,rw 0 0
stops the photon torpedos ;-)

When I remove the line everything's smooth and perfect.

I've included a tar.gz where you see:

mountall_before.log (after Install but before boot)
mountall.log (after removing the virtualbox drive and after booting where
everything worked)
mountall+virtualbox.log (after inserting the virtualbox and mount -a)
Bildschirmfoto-1.png where you see the screen output during the first attempt
where it hangs

If this is of any interest at this point:
When trying to reboot (after all above) it hangs with the white Ubuntu logo and
no errormessage till the moment when (as I suppose) the scrensaver switches of
the light and the VirtualBox window goes dark = the monitor is black.

Yep this time I was so clever to make a snapshot so I'm almost eagerly
awaiting beta5

In the meantime I've upgraded to the new linux 2.6.31.13

When trying to reboot it hangs with the white Ubuntu logo and no

away) the scrensaver switches of the light and the VirtualBox window
goes dark = the monitor is black.

Dead end.

[Bug 432237] Re: difficult to recover from filesystem errors

2009-10-09 Thread Ernst Zlo
I went back to the point before upgrading to 2.6.31.13

I installed your repository
I did
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

I checked if the VirtualBox drive is in /etc/fstab
groan I now call it VBd

Then I booted:
Same hang.

How can I go shure, that the new update to 2.6.31-13 is made before your
~beta5 is installed?

BTW I removed the VBd from /etc/fstab and it was o.k.
which is IMHO a slightly different scenario, because when upgrading the
VirtualBoxGuestadditions are not active any more.
So I booted again with Guestadditions installed (and no VBd) - o.k.

I activated the VBd and booted - let me say it this way: I stared that long on
the ubuntu logo that I can see it on this page as dark violett halo.
The good news for you: I can't bother you with screenshots because they are all
black. ;-)

So I tried it with 2.6.31-12 generic (and your mountall, I did NOT go
back this time) - same freeze.

And by typing this essay of #...@!* bugs it becomes clear to me: please
give me ~beta6 because without ~beta5 nothing goes, with ~beta5 nothing
goes either.

Sorry, Scott.

With or without your ~beta5: kernel 2.6.31-12 will hang with a VBd in

[Bug 432237] Re: difficult to recover from filesystem errors

2009-10-09 Thread Ernst Zlo
After a walk with my dog my brain is either complete damaged or working
better:

IMHO Ubuntu is trying now to start a VBd wich only can work if the
VirtualBox Guestadditions are allready working, which are working AFTER
all harddisks are mounted.

And you can't start the VirtualBox Guestadditions without having mounted
the / partition.

I can't see a logical way out of this except mounting all harddrives
except the VBd then start the VirtualBox Guestadditions and after they
are up and running mount the VBd.

[Bug 438170] Re: After last Karmic update Synatpic is gone

2009-10-08 Thread Ernst Zlo
Neither rar-compat nor scrollkeeper was installed.

At that moment the alpha began to erode massively. I reinstalled
Synaptic - no problem - a few hours later the menues were mixed up in 2
different languages I use. Then some applications disappeared.

At this point I didn't follow all errors, because 3 days later I
installed the Beta from scratch and all problems were gone.

And I don't know if to mark this as invalid or fix released, because I
don't know the reason for the behavior.

OTOH for me it's gone and the problem never came back.

This is NOT about the fsck + Superblock issue for itself, which is IMHO really
and corret #432237

This is about the fact that

CONTROL+D is not working to reboot / retry, as it is mentioned in the error
messages.

which detail nobody mentioned there.
Sorry to have been this unclear (and hoping to be understandable now)

2009-09-29 Thread Ernst Zlo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: util-linux

Karmic alpha6, updated 10 minutes ago.

[Bug 438665] [NEW] language-selector-qt is installed but invisible

2009-09-29 Thread Ernst Zlo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: language-selector

Karmic

language-selector-qt was deinstalled during the last update.
I installed it via ubuntu software center

It does not show up in System / Preferences nor System / Administration
nor System / Control Center

Switching between installed languages (English UK and German) is not
possible. Neither after booting (first log in) nor after logging out and
in again nor anywhere else.

Although it shows up the 2 languages in the log-in window (but it has no
effect!)

The Menue System is mixed up showing some progs in German, some in

[Bug 435327] Re: when switching users it is not possible to change the language of the system

2009-09-25 Thread Ernst Zlo
just upgraded to the very latest Karmic now:

I always log in in German first.

I Tried out to start a new session (with other language) - no effect to the
language.
I logged out and in again:
I get an error that there was a problem with
OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet
and if I want to delete it from my config.

I clicked no.
Xorg error
indicator-applet-session had an error (with no usable report)

As I wanted to click away the xorg (as it is a well known bug) by mistake I
clicked away a third error which appeared in the same moment where I clicked on
the xorg, so I cannot tell, what error that was.
Perhaps it would be able to cascade the error windows automatically - but that
belongs to a wishlist, I suppose.

And now the whole menu where to hibernate, shut-down, etc. is gone.

I wanted to triy this again but after reboot the
OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet produced the same error.
And no chance to send bug data to you.

So I shut the VirtualBox down and restarted again and as long as I dont
delete teh OAFID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet no change is seen.

I made a snapshot with VirtualBox.
this time I changed the language to English (United Kingdom) on logging in. (to
give you the original English content of the error window:
The panel encountered a problem wihle
loading
„OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet
Do you want to delte the applet from your configuration
This time I deleted it

Restart
fsck terminated with 4 (?)
I repaired it
And the same error message as above appears (so I can't even delete it from the
config)

So IMHO the bug is not really gone ;-)

[Bug 435327] Re: when switching users it is not possible to change the language of the system

2009-09-25 Thread Ernst Zlo
grumble.

I just now found out, that the menu with my login name is gone by design
(not by accident) because there is a new menu under System

But this doesn't change anything about the fact, that
a) OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet produces the error message
b) I can't change the language without logging out.

Detail: when I try this over, on the log in screen the language I changed
before is active - but not in the GNOME.
(that means when I first log in with German, then try to switch user and take
English, gnome keeps German but in the login screen the next time English is
chosen)

Perhaps is not expected that user ernst wants to switch to user ernst in
another language, but for me it would be of great help, because when I
answer questions or report bugs it is very hard to remember the exact
wording of the whole menues of several programs. The way of copy and
paste half answers into the editor, save them, log out, change language,
look for the menu, copy and paste the other way round is a bit time
expensive vbg

[Bug 436535] [NEW] Life CD changes hardware clock

2009-09-25 Thread Ernst Zlo
Public bug reported:

Karmic alpha:

When using the life CD the hardware clock is changed.
When I go to Vista after it, Vista shows GMT (instead of GMT + 2 as it would be
in my time zone)

I suspect a connetion to the Superblock bugs, where after reinstalling
the kernel (upgrades) a fsck is necessary, because the last boot is in
the future. BUG#268808

The time difference seems about the difference of GMT and local time
minus workingtime since last booting.

[Bug 435327] [NEW] when switching users it is not possible to change the language of the system

When loging out it is no problem to change the language before logging

don't show the panel at the bottom.

[Bug 105519] Re: livecd clock is (inevitably) wrong

2009-09-21 Thread Ernst Zlo
Karmic:
The life CD seems to change the hardware clock to UTC, with the side effect,
that Vista has UTC after the session.

And Vista doesn't even recognize (which is not the fault of Ubuntu, I
know eg)

IMHO it would be better to leave the time unchanged, because on a live
CD session the real exact time is not THAT important.

[Bug 345644] Re: Alpha 6 does not complete exit or reboot

2009-09-18 Thread Ernst Zlo
I had the same experience while installing the Karmic alpha 6 Ubuntu
version.

After the complete install process, the normal Window with the hint to
reboot the system appears.

When hitting the reboot butten, the system does NOT shut down clearly,
but repeatedly shows the terminal window (but with enlarged font) for a
fraction of a second, then shows a black screen, then again the terminal
with the enlarged font.

It was too fast for me to make a snapshot (installing on VirtualBox)
[perhaps I'm to old for this task or my PC is to fast for me g]

Therefore the screen with the hint to take out the installation CD did
NOT appear. and after 6 or seven rounds I gave up.

After switching off, the boot is normal - except for the error messages
described in BUG #430272

If I could have a link to the other 'approved' icons, I could make one

If not, I'll have to go to the installation process and make

it would be a bit boring and therefore definitely have to wait
untill thursday [alpha 6] ;-)

[Bug 426715] [NEW] Adding two or more custom shortcuts in gnome-keybinding-properties only one is visible

2009-09-09 Thread Ernst Zlo
Public bug reported:

When trying to add more then one keybord shortcuts 'in one session' only the
first appear under Custom Shortcuts.
I tried to add

scanner
/home/ernst/Dokumente

and only

scanner

appeared

When closing „keyboard shortcuts„ and opening again they are listed and
keybord shortcust can be altered without problem, so IMHO it only seems
that the pane where they are listed is not updated.

2009-09-04 Thread Ernst Zlo
Sorry for the delay - had a bit of sleep last night :)
I installed Alpha 5 and sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade and
the bug was gone!
After installing the virtualbox guest additions it did NOT return.
Everything's fine!
xterm is fine too.

Thanks for your bug report. Could you please answer the following questions
in order to narrow down the possible origins of this bug :
 - Does this bug also occur with other terminal emulators (for example xterm) ?
 - Is the bug still present with latest updates ?
 Thanks for your help.
