I switched to using the generic kernel. If you're hardware is so old 340
is the latest graphics driver you can use, you probably don't need
Focal's HWE. The generic kernel is supported until 2025. I expect I'll
replace this device by then either due to getting sick of the driver's
poor performance

This issue only happens with some of my video files and the issue seems
to be with VLC's "Hardware-acclerated decoding" setting. When that is
set to either Automatic or VDPAU, those files always cause VLC to need
to be killed. When set to Disabled or either of the VAAPI, VLC behaves

While the green headphone out jack is plugged in sound comes out of the
internal speakers but not out of the external speakers. At one point I
got the internal speakers muted when I plugged the headphone jack in but

I dug a little bit and found the the cause of the problem and a quick
and dirty solution.
The reason:
Image Creator uses platform.dist() to determine the platform it's
running on. If you run 'python -c "import platform; print
platform.dist()"' on Ubuntu before 8.10, the result is something like
