That went out too fast… The second package that may include the first

[Bug 2077969] Re: my ubuntu taskbar disappeared and when I go to settings>ubuntu desktop this messages appears "no ubuntu settings found" and "oops, something has gone wrong. Please report a bug in La

2024-09-10 Thread Gilles Pietri
Hi,
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04.1 from Ubuntu 22.04, and I have the same issue.
If I start gnome-control-center on the terminal, I get:

$ LC_ALL=C gnome-control-center
14:35:12.8558 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ding is installed here.
Please fix your installation.
14:35:12.8559 cc-ubuntu-panel[95265]: WARNING: No Ubuntu Dock is installed
here. Panel disabled. Please fix your installation.

So I guess something must have been wrong. So I installed ubuntu-desktop to see
if I removed anything important. Didn't fix it. Turns out… I missed
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
Once installed, I get the dock back, and the desktop settings work again.

Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my
main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness
in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this
issue actually happens out-of-the-box.

[Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply
because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases
told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba
internals.

Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with
authenticated shares).
But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to
install samba in the first place!

It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes
care of this. No need to worry."

But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no
GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search
and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few
minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward.

I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong
directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I
thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit
samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...)

I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection
to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that!

But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog
or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he
is expected to manually add a samba user&password!

2020-04-18 Thread Gilles GAIDO
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I've installed wallch thru synaptic (because no entry in the software center).
The homepage link (displayed in synaptic) is dead.

The app can be launched without crash but...

only 2 tabs are working :

- live website

these 2 tabs do not work :
- live earth
- picture of the day
the error message is "There was a problem while trying to download what you
requested. Please check your internet connection."

the tab named "wallpaper clocks" does not work ( the link to
http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaperclocks/browse.php says "File not found." )
and is undocumented.

Best regards,

Gilles

[Bug 1849949] [NEW] Caja does not appear as application in the Ubuntu activity / apps list

2019-10-26 Thread Gilles Maitre
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine
Caja version: 1.22.2

My Ubuntu is in German. So I try to translate in English the terms i'm
using.

How to reproduce

- Press the Windows-key or the button "Display applications" at the bottom of
the task bar.
==> Caja is not appearing in the list.
- Supply the word "Caja" (without double apostrophe) in the Search Field.
==> Caja is not appearing in the result.

But Ubuntu-Software knows the Caja is installed on my computer.

It is annoying but not really a problem.

Workaround
--
- Start Caja from the command line.
- Mark it as a favorite.
==> So you have it if you need it.

Best regards,
Gilles

[Bug 1849948] [NEW] Unvisible line when switching between tabs in list mode

2019-10-26 Thread Gilles Maitre
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine
Caja version: 1.22.2

My Ubuntu is in German. So I try to translate in English the terms i'm
using.

How to reproduce

- Switch to "supplementary tab" with F3.
- Set the display mode to list-view in both tabs.
- Select on a tab any file/line.
- Switch to the other tab.
==> the line in the previous is still selected, but has the wrong font color
(white) / background color => the line is invisible.
- Switch back to original tab
==> the previous line in the previous tab has the same problem...

I expect

- Either the selected line in the previous tab is unselected and has the same
font display as the neighbours' ones.
- Or the selected line in the previous tab is still selected but the background
display colour is still active.

Notice
--
- This bug does not occur if the display mode is "symbol" or "compact" view,
instead of list-view.

Thank you for quickly fixing it. I cannot use Caja any more as my
standard file manager.

Best regards
Gilles

[Bug 1770530] [NEW] After a fresh instalation, Grub 2 could'not be installed in /.

2018-05-10 Thread Facundo Gilles
Public bug reported:

I am trying to install a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 with dual booting. After
normal boot in UEFI mode from Ubuntu liveusd, I selected "something
else" option. My plan: split the root "/" in 3 partitions: /boot, / ,
and /home, all in my /dev/sda hard disk. Not sure if it is important but
win7 partitions are in the same HDD. I hope it helps. Best!

[Bug 1767984] [NEW] "apt-get upgrade" failed for gitlab when the service is stopped

2018-04-30 Thread Gilles GAIDO
Public bug reported:

(attachements : term.log, history.log)

When gitlab service is not launched, the command "apt-get upgrade"
fails.

There's at least one workaround for this issue : I start the service
(systemctl start gitlab-runsvdir.service) and I run "apt-get upgrade"
again.

Context :

gitlab is installed but was disabled (to save memory...) using "systemctl
disable gitlab-runsvdir.service"

I performed those commands :
> sudo apt-get update
> sudo apt-get upgrade

The result in /var/log/apt/ :
 Start-Date: 2018-04-30 09:57:34
 Commandline: apt-get upgrade
 Requested-By: ggo-gnome (1004)
 Upgrade: gitlab-ee:amd64 (10.6.4-ee.0, 10.7.1-ee.0)
Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
 End-Date: 2018-04-30 09:58:30

After that, I tried to start the service and launch the upgrade again : it
worked...
> systemctl start gitlab-runsvdir.service
> sudo apt-get upgrade

The result in /var/log/apt/ :
 Start-Date: 2018-04-30 10:17:58
 Commandline: apt-get upgrade
 Requested-By: ggo-gnome (1004)
 Upgrade: gitlab-ee:amd64 (10.6.4-ee.0, 10.7.1-ee.0)
 End-Date: 2018-04-30 10:26:24

The file term.log (attached) shows an error :

ERROR: Encountered unsupported config key 'auto' in /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb.

thanks a lot

[Bug 1727183] [NEW] Executing commands through sudo or equivalent doesn't work

2017-10-24 Thread Gilles Gravier
Public bug reported:

Any application that needs to run with elevated privileges fails to
launch on artful (17.10) desktop.

Whether it's run from a terminal with sudo (e.g. "sudo gnome-terminal")
or directly from the GUI icon by clicking on the application itself
(e.g. launch "Synaptic Package Manager" from the application list and
then enter your password) the same behavior happens: Application does
not run.

If doing this from a terminal, the resulting error message is:
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:

As a workaround, running "xhost +" from a terminal before allows all
elevated privileges apps to now run. But this isn't helping apps that
need to run at start of graphical environment and for which opening a
terminal manually before to type "xhost +" isn't feasible.

This is a regression since 17.04.

[Bug 1633251] Re: Crashes when installing on Ubuntu 16.10

2017-10-09 Thread Gilles Degottex
For information:
master and execution host binaries can be compiled from the source
(gridengine_8.1.9+dfsg.orig.tar.gz), installed, and running flawlessly.

deb pkg gridengine-client can then be used on submit hosts.

Thus, the bug is surely from the configuration script of the pkg
gridengine-master

[Bug 1635577] Re: memory leak in unity-panel-service

2016-12-05 Thread Gilles Gagniard
With owncloud-client from yakkety-proposed and appmenu-qt5 uninstalled :

$ dpkg -l | grep owncloud-client
ii owncloud-client
2.2.2+dfsg-1ubuntu0.1 amd64folder synchronization
with an ownCloud server - GUI
ii owncloud-client-data
2.2.2+dfsg-1ubuntu0.1 all ownCloudSync folder
synchronization - shared data
ii owncloud-client-l10n
2.2.2+dfsg-1ubuntu0.1 all ownCloudSync folder
synchronization - localization

I confirm the memory leak in unity-panel-service is gone.

*However*, it seems that there is now a bug with the indicator menu ...
after a bit less than 24h running it, the menu is always empty (see
attached screenshot). But owncloud-client is still synchronizing in the
background.

[Bug 1635577] Re: memory leak in unity-panel-service

2016-11-16 Thread Gilles Gagniard
I think I've got a working workaround :

- apt install appmenu-qt5
- in your ~/.profile, add 'export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=appmenu-qt5'
- reload your session

No more memory leak for me, but I've only applied that a couple of hours
ago, so I'm not 100% sure yet.

If this is confirmed, it means the culprit is the new native Qt5 dbus
appmenu/indicator support in yakkety, while in xenial and before an
external plugin called 'appmenu-qt5' was used for the integration of Qt5
menus in Unity.

More information about this change here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtbase-opensource-src/+bug/1612767

Unfortunately it seems this old plugin is going the way of the dodo in
zesty : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/appmenu-
qt5/+bug/1634941

[Bug 1633679] [NEW] upgrade to kernel 4.4.0-43 renders system unusable

2016-10-14 Thread Gilles De Brouwer
Public bug reported:

Hi,

After the update to kernel 4.4.0-43 laptop (asus zenbook UX305UA) became
unsuable :
- touchpad not working
- usb mouse not working
- screen resultion not recognized anymore only allowing basic resolution
- I did not test sound, etc... since no pointing device was accepted anymore to
navigate the gui
- Only possible interaction via dash/terminal

Problem is solved by switching back to kernel 4.4.0-42

Tell me what you need to diagnose the cause
Please give exact commands since I'm not a deep core techy.

I've recently upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS and now my photo workflow is
partly broken.

[Bug 1611363] Re: vim.gtk3 crashes frequently with SIGSEGV in ffi_call_unix64()

I forgot to add a reference to vim's bugtracker on github:

but as I said before, "libunity-gtk3-parser.so.0" seems to make it
Ubuntu-specific.

[Bug 1143495] Re: udisks reporting input/output error that seems to be nonsense

2016-07-19 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I tried disabling udisks's checking of SMART attributes: open gnome-
disk-utility ("Disks"), select the SSD, click the "hamburger" icon in
the top right corner, SMART, disable. But unfortunately it is
automatically re-enabled after a reboot.

Is there a workaround?

[Bug 1569724] Re: noatime option

2016-07-18 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I've stumbled upon the same issue.

Here's what I found:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-btrfs-
snapshot/+question/263994

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-btrfs-snapshot/+bug/833980

In my opinion "older than" should NOT imply "last accessed/used". Such a
feature should be taken care of separately / optionally. I'd guess that
most users use apt-btrfs-snapshot exclusively in order to revert their
system in case of an update gone wrong. In this use case, atime is of no
practical use whatsoever. (Of course some users will use apt-btrfs-
snapshot to switch between different versions of their OS and this
should be supported, but preferably not at the expense of the "main"
feature.)

It seemed related to GLUT, which includes stuffs that Qt already
included.

Anyway, FMIT does not use GLUT since fmit-1.0.15.
Might be worth trying this new version:

[Bug 1572659] Re: bcmwl driver does not work with kernel 4.4.0-21

2016-04-26 Thread Torsten Gilles
Pedro, thank you for the hint, I'll try if that works as a workaround for me
:-). I though the module build would disable secure boot since a dialog for a
password for disabling pops up.
But it remains the question to me what changed from kernel-4.4.0-18 to 4.4.0-21
that somehow broke the wl module loading process. Maybe it's that disabling
that does not work anymore and if you disable security boot in BIOS you come
around this?

2016-04-26 Thread Torsten Gilles
The same issue exists when using the broadcom-sta-dkms package instead of
bcmwl-kernel-source on kernel 4.4.0-21 (also as with bcmwl-kernel-source this
packages works on kernel-4.4.0-18):
The loading of the module fails with modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'wl':
Required key not available. The reason seems to be because of insufficient
privileges for some underlying action.

[Bug 364101] Re: network-manager-openvpn does not support all options supported by openvpn

2015-10-12 Thread Gilles Scokart
