Re: [Bug 736743] Re: environment block not implemented on btrfs

2018-07-08 Thread Guy Stone
This has been the advice since day 1. It's obviously not what many want.
I'd expect that someone at Canonical might have a better chance at spurring
communication between GRUB and BTRFS than a mere end-user.

I've given up on BTRFS and gone back to ext4 because of this issue. No one

[Bug 1635824] Re: r8168-dkms 8.041.00-1: r8168 kernel module failed to build [error: ‘NETIF_F_ALL_CSUM’ undeclared]

2017-04-25 Thread Guy Stone
The patch enables the module to compile correctly and produce a
functioning driver. I derived it by analogy with other fixes for the
r8168/9. I claim no understanding of this module or the underlying
chipset problem!

Kernel 4.4 appears to be the last version where the original code is
applicable.

[Bug 1273806] [NEW] mouse dies intermittently until cold reboot

2014-01-28 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

While in use from minutes to hours, the cursor disappears and the
buttons stop working. Attaching another mouse to a different USB ports
restores functionality , but the original mouse stays dead. This
behaviour has been discussed in Askubuntu #69594, but solutions there
did not prevent hanging on this system.

Been pecking away at this issue for a few years now. Still occurs
annoyingly frequently on a HP DV7 AMD system running updated 12.04.3
upgraded to 3.11-0-15-generic kernel.

This time when it happened, looked at the dmesg outputs. They all showed
a very recent

type=1400 audit(1390858876.548:75): apparmor=DENIED
operation=capable parent=1 profile=/usr/sbin/cupsd pid=1249
comm=cupsd pid=1249 comm=cupsd capability=36
capname=block_suspend

There was no printing occurring. No printer is connected to this system
(it prints via another (XP) system via network), and there are no other
USB devices attached except for a powered-down HDD..

Figured the next thing to try was disabling apparmor for cups. Since
doing that, the mouse remains working.

Wild guess here is that something in the cupsd profile is triggering for
a dangerous behaviour of a USB printer which can be mistakenly triggered
by a USB mouse. (Launchpad 1199933 discusses the issue around
block_suspend and why I couldn't just shut down that single rule.)

ROOT CAUSE
bumlib.pm gets the current module description from apt-cache show and saves it
with
my $start = rindex($s_info,Description);
With internationalization, the pkg description text can have a hyphen and
language code. So now $start is pointing to the wrong place.

[Bug 1249663] Re: Trusty gnome flashback indicator-applet-complete disappeared completely. Nothing displays in the top right panel.

2013-11-11 Thread Guy Stone
More to this than meets the eye. I'm runningTahr in latest VBox with
Guest Additions.

Logging into Gnome Flashback, system OK with just 1 workspace and my
desktop is as expected. If I increase that to 4 and switch away from #1,
lose my wallpaper and panels - blacked-out screen - have to close VM to
get out.

Logging into Gnome Flashback No Effects, I can use all 4 of the
workspaces.

Re: [Bug 132042] Re: wireless stops working until reboot

2012-10-25 Thread Guy Stone
Unfortunately I can't follow up on your request. My base system is 64-bit
Precise, and I only run Quantal in a VM for short periods frequently. This
problem only shows up after several hours of email. torrent, and newsgroup
downloads, and I've never run any VM long enough to show it there. As I
reported previously, the host can be locked up but connectivity in a VM is
unaffected.

I hit the glitch yesterday, so if there's any value in my going through the
apport collect process I'll be happy to do so the next time I hit it.

The problem with replacing my 3.2.0-32-generic kernel with a 3.3.7 version,
even temporarily, is that most likely my VirtualBox installation won't
work, and I'll have to redo the DKMS rigmarole coming and going...

I can't think of a good solution for this without adding another HD and
cloning over my Precise partition. However, I don't have a spare even close
to large enough. Linux is on a 1.10 TB partition of which about 300GB are
in use (including the VDI files current size).

So, if you have any alternative suggestions on how I can be of assistance,
please let me know.

Guy

Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in
the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically
you tested and remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following
 tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:

[Bug 132042] Re: wireless stops working until reboot

2012-09-11 Thread Guy Stone
I've been pecking away at this glitch for years now from one version to
the next like everyone else in this thread. I was always suspicious of
there being a low-level problem, even though it occurred with multiple
machines and different ethernet/wireless chips.

My latest system acquisiition is a machine capable of running VBox. My
host session (64-bit 12.04.1 LTS) just went incommunicado on me, but I'm
posting this using IE in an XP VM. Leads me to believe that problem is
somewhere around OSI Level 4, since the bridged ethernet to the VMs work
perfectly. Wish I knew what to twiddle to investigate further.

[Bug 1047498] [NEW] QQ beta1 desktop ubi-partman exit 141 during install from CD

2012-09-07 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

One way I test milestones is to do a fresh install overwriting the
previous cumulative version on a 16GB SDHC card. I boot from the USB-
attached CDROM, go directly to install, choose the card as the
installable device, and reinstall overwriting the entire card (which has
a single ext3 partition, no swap).

This time I crashed as soon as I clicked Install after checking boxes on
the Peparing window.. The only other HD is the built-in 16GB with WinXP.

System is an ASUS eeePC900, 2GB RAM, Celeron 900.

[Bug 1044475] [NEW] Unable to install encrypted w/o swap target from host w swap

2012-08-31 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

I maintain a system on an SDHC card for banking and other secure
usage. The card gets 2 partitions, an unencrypted /boot and a LUKS-
encypted root. There's no swap since the card size is 16GB, and I need
as much storage as I can get. The card gets plugged into a 2GB netbook,
and I'm not heavily multitasking, so I never need to swap.

To install, I boot the alt-install CD on an existing Ubuntu desktop and
go through manual partitioning of the card (no LVM of course). The
installation doesn't complete because at the end, the installer
complains that swap isn't encrypted. That's true, BUT the swap it's
inspecting is on the host machine, and has no relevance to when I will
be booting from the SD card.

To get around this, I had to go to Windows-only machine to do the
install. Because there was no swap partition on its HD, everything went
fine. What I really need is a way to tell the installer to totally
ignore the host's swap partition when setting up the SDHC card.

Calling attention to this important. Too bad you couldn't get this
warnng out without expecting the user to read the release notes. I
suspect many upgraders will think I've been playing with 12.04 - I know
what to expect. Some kind of a Don't Panic scren at the start of the
upgrade would've been nice. Particularly since the fix will have to wait
for 12.04.2 (I think).

2012-07-14 Thread Guy Stone
Installed Quantal64Jul14.1 daily live into VBox. Updated and installed
some addtional packages, switched to Classic No Effects desktop. Changed
appearances slightly. Went to VBox full-screen display for this VM.
Clicked Places, and here I am!

Wouldn't occurance in a VM make hardware issues unlikely?

[Bug 1013911] Re: quantal update 15 June xdiagnose install failure code 1

2012-06-15 Thread Guy Stone
Someone forgot to convert /usr/lib/python3/dist-
packages/xdiagnose/assistant.py from Python2 to Python3. Fix is to edit
that file and change the print statements to use new syntax.

Anyone in a DIY mood that isn't a Python person, that means wrapping
each argument in parens. Then do aptitude safe-upgrade to push through
what didn't complete.

See changes starting around line 72 of attachment.

[Bug 858536] Re: Unity desktop right-truncates with external monitor

2011-11-10 Thread Guy Stone
Well, okay, if that's going to be Canonical's attitude. I thought Unity
was targeted for netbooks. Now you're saying that if I use my netbook as
a workbench machine with an external monitor, you're not interested in
supporting that configuration. I realize nobody's going to connect an
ext mon to their cellphone, but this is one more instance of alienating
experienced users.

By the way, GNOME fallback works automagically with external monitor
mode.

[Bug 858536] [NEW] Unity desktop right-truncates with external monitor

2011-09-24 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

Attached tar contains screenshots, one set when system is booted with
ext mon showing the truncation, the other without. There's also an
xerrors logfile.

If I choose Unity2D at logon, I get correct results with and without the
external monitor.

Removing deja-dup prevented the crash Now I get a bunch of

type errors for a number of different buttons.

Am using netbook with external monitor, so maybe screen characteristics are
confusing.
