[Bug 992424] Re: ext4 filesystem errors on SSD disk

2013-03-27 Thread Heitzso
Wife has a U300s running Debian Mint. Got bit recently w/ custom 3.5.2
(standard .config updated with defaults and compiled). I'm compiling
3.8.4 on it now (again debian mint standard .config updated w/ defaults
for 3.8.4) to see if that fixes it. Filesystem is ext4. I know I'm on
ubuntu launchpad web site versus mint/debian/upstream but read through
the problems here.

Wife says system never ran on battery to battery death (I asked).
However she likely suspends the system every evening. Don't know if
that triggered the file system corruption.

I'm frustrated (calmly so) and wondering whether JFS or bleeding edge
kernel or ? what ? will fix. This is the only SSD in my house (of 5
house computers) and the only computer whose file system trashes this
way. As a U300s (will never buy again) you cannot pop in a standard
replacement SSD (non standard SSD).

Again, hope this adds some insight. Not trying to thrash the wrong bug
reporting system.

Minor confirmation ... on a 4 core AMD system pulseaudio was consuming
all of one of my cores. I kill'ed it and restarted it and now it's fine
(playing songbird web radio music). I don't know what triggered by the
CPU thrash state, but once started it does not let up. (karmic last

[Bug 411350] Re: gnome-screensaver not functioning

2009-12-02 Thread Heitzso
This started happening on my AMD 64 X4 w/ 4G in the past couple of
weeks. It is consistent, in that the screensaver never kicks in and
power saver never turns off display (but I can run the command in a
terminal and it works). I didn't go digging in bug reports at first
because, as such an in-your-face problem, I figured it would be fixed in
short order. Is there anything I can do to help? e.g. report hardware
specs? list versions, etc.?

Re: [Bug 429391] Re: cups new printer does not find cups printer on a server on network

2009-10-05 Thread Heitzso
minor off line fix ... if you have the printers.conf file from before
trying karmic, use that in the /etc/cups dir and you should have a
working system.
Doesn't fix the bug, but it might get your printer working.
 Hi

I've got a very similar problem in Karmic Beta.
I share two printers via cups, but although I can find them in the network I
can't connect to them (tried from a jaunty-client). To add them on the client
I choose settings in the printer-window and check the box show printers
shared by other systems, but I still can't print and if I verify the
connection in the ipp-part of the add printer-assistant the error message
Access denied appears. Printing on the server itself works fine.
Please see the attached file about this access problem.

Don't hesitate to ask me if you need additional information.

 Thanks a lot in advance!

 Regards

 Simon

[Bug 435893] [NEW] logrotate breaks rsyslog w/ attempted reload

2009-09-24 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: logrotate

bug could be in rsyslog; actually in interaction of the two. Been
running karmic for 2 weeks, updating daily. This morning got email

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
/etc/init.d/rsyslog: 70: reload: not found
invoke-rc.d: initscript rsyslog, action reload failed.
error: error running non-shared postrotate script for /var/log/syslog of
'/var/log/syslog
'
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

So something is amiss between the two. Glanced at rsyslog init.d script
and see comments about switching over to another mechanism. This may be
a no-op due to the particular moment yesterday I last updated, i.e. I
picked up one package change but the other wasn't in place just yet.

Re: [Bug 356508] Re: radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver

2009-04-22 Thread Heitzso
I installed recent proprietary driver and it works now. Let me know if
someone wants me to try out radeon/radeonhd or other driver.
 try this

For Ubuntu 8.04 Linux ATI Radeon Drivers.

Here you go follow just like it says to or it will not work right. (
and no terminal is not terminal)

 1. Install Linux, if you have not already done so. (if you have already
installed drivers for your card in Linux and they are not working see step
 #11 on the How-To.)
 2. Go to http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and download
drivers to your desktop. (make sure to make this file executable.)
 3. On desktop text upper left side go to /System/Admin/Hardware drivers and
enable card do not restart at this time.
 4. On desktop text upper left side go to /Applications/Accessories/Terminal
 5. Type --- cd Desktop
 6. Type --- dir
 7. Type --- sudo ./ATI_DRIVER
 8. Install driver
 9. Wait a long time
 10.Restart

Tell me if you have any problems IRC room #ubuntu

11.On desktop text upper left side go to /Applications/Accessories/Terminal
type --- sudo apt-get --purge remove
 go back to step #2.

[Bug 285517] Re: Radeon HD 3300 not recognized

2009-04-06 Thread Heitzso
In jaunty it is severely broken as of early April, with vesa, radeon,
radeonhd, fglrx all failing to work -- the monitor locks up when trying
to start x; so you cannot jump over to a console, e.g. ALT-CTL-F1. You
can still ssh in. Mobo is Gigabyte GA-MA790GP w/ all memory slots
filled (4G total). Googling around it seems the problem may be related
to having all memory slots filled, i.e. if I pull two memory sticks and
drop back to 2G then it might work. I haven't tried that. But that
might explain why someone might believe 3300 works in Jaunty, if they
tested on a system without all memory slots filled.

[Bug 356508] [NEW] radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver

2009-04-06 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

This may be a duplicate of 284408, but is more general than that bug
report (I added a comment to it).

I recently upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 beta. Under 8.10 I had run fglrx
driver downloaded from ati web site.

Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA790GP with built in radeon hd3300 and 4 G
of RAM (all slots filled). I've tried radeon, radeonhd, vesa, and fglrx
drivers. I've also tried to build most recent radeonhd from git, and
the most recent fglrx driver from amd/ati web site. In all cases the
screen freezes and then you cannot even ctrl-alt-f1 over to a console.
It is possible to ssh into the box. (Note that latest fglrx driver from
ati does not install due to version of X, etc., so it does not freeze,
it just does not install.)

Googling around it seems the problem may be related to having all memory
slots filled, i.e. if I pull two memory sticks and drop back to 2G then
it might work. I haven't tried that. But that might explain why someone
might believe 3300 works in Jaunty, if they tested on a system without
all memory slots filled.

I will be glad to assist in debugging this, but I'd appreciate working
w/ someone on Ubuntu's side who has an idea of what the problem might be
so I'm not just shooting in the dark. I've lost a good bit of time
trying to get some version of X running (all failed) and the system is
down for the count until I get this fixed. Thanks.

I may well have messed up my system by trying to compile radeonhd from
git for it to get something to work.

[Bug 353251] Re: rtinstall scripts (to provide new 2.6 symlinks) are not run on intrepid-jaunty upgrade

2009-04-03 Thread Heitzso
I have a tangled system due to this bug. I tried to upgrade from
intrepid from console using aptitude dist-upgrade and the upgrade is
severely (?) hung. I would appreciate a fix for those of us with
hung/broken systems, i.e. what sequence of commands will get python2.6
working so all of the packages and upgrade systems depending on it can
get back on track. I ack that the most important fix for the ubuntu
team is to get the packages cleaned up so this does not happen. But
please also post here instructions on untangling a broken upgrade.
Thanks.

[Bug 354228] Re: package python2.6-minimal 2.6.1-1ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-04-03 Thread Heitzso
Please provide a clear do this and then this sequence to fix a trashed
Intrepid-Jaunty upgrade. For example, while there's mention of an out of date
python central control file causing this problem it would be nice if someone
could write:
 * in file /etc/blat/blat.conf
 * add/common/delete the following lines
 * run apt-get install python-central
or whatever. Please remember that what is second nature for you, the python
maintainers, is black magic for many of us who just assume python runs.

Because the upgrade is currently so broken I'm assuming sequences of
update/dist-upgrade can't untangle, and, so far this morning, that's
been the case. If this should work, but just not for X hours/days/?
until changes percolate through the mirrors I'd appreciate a simple
please hold tight till Saturday morning (or whatever) and then let a
standard aptitude update aptitude dist-upgrade fix it. --- Thanks.

greyed out.
However remote printers are shown. My 8.10 I'm testing on was upgraded
through several generations of Ubuntu. Is there perhaps a magic cups
configuration
file and config line?

[Bug 239924] [NEW] /usr/bin/Xorg disappeared (Hardy)

2008-06-13 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

[Bug 219907] [NEW] detect lan printers no longer settable

2008-04-20 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Running current Hardy Heron (April 20, 2008)
remote printers not shown in gnome-cups-manager
and detect lan printers is greyed out
(cannot be clicked)

This is true whether click to start gnome-cups-manager
via System-Administration and on down to g-c-m
or if I start g-c-m from a root terminal (having set
a password for root, setting DISPLAY, running xhost +
etc.)

Net is, even running g-c-m as root I cannot set the
detect lan printers and all of my printers are hooked to

and restarting cupsys

This morning I first printed out one Abiword document that I had laying around.
A new Abiword document failed. I tried repeatedly. They all failed. I tried
restarting in cups admin and they all stopped.
I tried quiting all of my Abiword instances, then restarting Abiword, opening
up the problem doc and trying to print that again. Failed again.
I printed off to PDF, opened up that document in evince and printed that off
successfully (from client sys evince to server HP printer).
Hence I do not know if the issue is in Abiword, cups, or the regular expression
parser that was picked up by the update.

[Bug 194384] Re: cups not printing from abiword

2008-03-07 Thread Heitzso
At the moment I've shifted over to another ubuntu gutsy desktop for my main
development machine. It had libgnomeprint15 on it.
Abiword successfully prints multiple times to the printer from this desktop w/
libgnomeprint15 on it.
I don't know if an interim update to some other package is affecting this or
not.
It would be a minor hassle, but let me know if it would be useful for me to
remove the libgnomeprint15 package and retry the test.

[Bug 61205] Re: no option to disable temporarily

2007-10-23 Thread Heitzso
How do I disable the evolution email notifier entirely?

I may stop using gnome for this one reason. Some 1000 spams come to my
server every day, of which some 900 are filtered out by the server. But
almost a hundred hit Evolution every day. Evolution manages to filter
2/3rds of those spam. But I'm still left with that #!(*% icon popping
up every few minutes with the drop down notification that I have email
which is almost always spam.

I've poked around in Evolution and Session start and don't see how to
turn that annoyance off.

Side issue is there is more than one session start program w/ no
name/description. I've turned them off but have no idea what I turned
off.

Thanks,

Note error message in log was that it was unable to WRITE to ppds.dat.
I was not comfortable granting write permission to the file, but just
adding read permission to group lp could see it was sufficient.

[Bug 154662] most recent update in gutsy broke printing to remote cups printer

2007-10-19 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

I've been running gutsy rc and now gutsy final for over a month on my laptop.
Printing had worked fine to a remote printer attached in my office LAN to a
feisty server up until recently.
I don't print often, so cannot say exactly at what point printing stopped
working in gutsy.

The same feisty server cups printer that is invisible to gutsy is being seen
and printed to just fine
by a Mac OS X box and a separate Feisty desktop.

When I use the printer config tool (gnome Sys-Admin-Printing)
and enter the server I want it to browse for IPP printers it hangs forever and
I have to kill it.

Summary:

not seeing IPP broadcast printers even though Mac OSX and feisty see the
  remote printer fine

when I manually force it to browse the server the admin tool hangs

[Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy

2007-10-17 Thread Heitzso
I spent a couple hours this morning thrashing this and was not able to
setup a working flgrx restricted compiz environment on my gutsy (current
as of last night) system.

What I did to test:
dropped fglrx from the restricted list in /etc/default/linux-res*
rebooted (to insure picking up linux-restr* version of fglrx and confirmed
that version in /var/log/X*log
moved the two *glx* files back into /etc/X11/Xsession.d
modified my xorg.conf as per what I ran across on the web:

Section Device
Identifier X1600
Driver fglrx
Option VideoOverlay off
Option OpenGLOverlay on
BusID PCI:1:0:0
EndSection
Section DRI
Mode 0666
EndSection
Section Extensions
Option Composite enable
EndSection
Section ServerFlags
Option AIGLX off
EndSection

and restarted /etc/X11/gdm

result was glxgears ran, through jerky, and fglrx_glxgears did not run at all
due to missing DRI on DISPLAY :1.0
Firefox was ungodly slow w/ text input and some of the gnome applets were
consuming lots of CPU

I reverted ...
I'm now running ati's fglrx binary in a gnome non-compiz env by moving the two
glx files out of the way in /etc/X11/Xsession.d
and blocking the gutsy fglrx module in /etc/default/linux-res* and restarting
gdm.
With those changes firefox is fast, movies work (mplayer -fs -vo gl2 *.mp*),
and I don't have compix

I may have an odd env. having upgraded from feisty w/ my custom xorg.conf
but I don't know what I could be doing wrong.

My plan is to wait for the upcoming ati binary flgrx that supports
compiz directly.

[Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy

2007-09-13 Thread Heitzso
I tracked this down to the xgl server and my fglrx.
I don't know if it occurs on non-fglrx systems or on all fglrx systems.
A temporary fix until Ubuntu corrects this problem (PLEASE!!) is to:

(as root, however you get there ...)
  cd /etc/X11/Xsession.d
  mkdir SAVE
  mv ??xserver-xgl_start-server SAVE

then log out and log back in, which, I believe, restarts your xserver. I
ususally
ctl-alt-f1 and login as root on that that terminal
(I've given root a password so I can log in as root), and
  /etc/init.d/gdm restart

The clue was noting gutsy had set DISPLAY to :1.0 which was the flag
that the xservers were layered (? not certain I'm saying this right). And that
I needed to STOP the layering.

FWIW ... in another month or two rumors are that AMD/ATI will finally have
fglrx able to handle the eye candy w/o the layered xserver kludge.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] Suspend to Ram does not work on Z61m

2007-09-12 Thread Heitzso
Ubuntu may want to consider this a show stopper for releasing gutsy, or
at least flag all over the place this problem. Reason I say that is if
5% of all of your potential upgraders are laptops running ati graphics
(just shooting in the dark re percentage, but if anything I assume the
actual number is higher than 5%) then 5% of all Ubuntu users will feel
badly burned by the upgrade to gutsy. A broken suspend, when suspend
worked fine in Edgy, is a critical bug.

BTW, I'm running ati's latest stable release of fglrx and this suspend
problem shows up in it as well. I switched to ati's fglrx from ubuntu's
in the hope that the ati/glx slowdown would be fixed (wasn't, had to
disable glx server).

[Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy

2007-09-10 Thread Heitzso
Evolution and firefox are both slow on my system re keyboard input. In
took about a minute for the summary line to show up (maybe 1 second per
character). In this comment area I'm typing 10 words ahead of what is
being displayed. Ditto evolution when trying to type in a new email.

Keyboard entry is fast in geany (IDE) and gnome-terminal -- both X apps.
So it isn't all X apps have slow keyboard entry pick up.

My system is an ATI 1500 laptop with fglrx for the display controller
into X.

This as an extremely nasty bug that will make any user quite unhappy. (I
had to wait 15 seconds or more for the graphic display to catch up to
the end of this sentence just before the parenthesis).

CPU pegs out at 100% during the graphic display time of the slow
keyboard display.

On the same system Opera is fine, i.e. I can enter text on the search

Firefox taking a minute or two to catch up on this simple comment.

[Bug 138714] mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks

2007-09-10 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server

A couple of days ago I upgraded my laptop from feisty to gutsy. I had a
feisty mysql server database on the laptop. The upgrade broke the
database. Following different googled how to fix this from the
internet just dug the problem in deeper. I'm going to have to do a full
purge and reload to get mysql back up and running. The bogus how to
fix notes on the web are not your problem, but mysql should have
performed the steps necessary for an automated upgrde (I assume use
original mysql to dump the db to a sql file ready to create and load a
new db, then wiped the original db, finally with new mysql recreating
and then loading a new db in the correct format for mysql 5.

[Bug 138714] Re: mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks

2007-09-10 Thread Heitzso
I was upgrading from current version of feisty (I update regularly) to gutsy
via changing entries in /etc/apt/sources.list
and then 'apt-get update' followed by 'apt-get dist-upgrade'

MySql failed with a message re a bad hosts table.
I believe the 4.x to 5.x change in mysql modified several table layouts.

On the internet some recommendations were to just 'rm blat' a number of
offending tables and let mysql rebuild them.
That partially worked, but also dropped the magical [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or
something similar)
user record. I then followed internet recommendations for fixing that, but
that failed as well. I was left
with something that complained about missing entries in some key tables when
running
  mysqlcheck -A --auto-repair
I finally just apt-get remove'ed with purge, then reinstalled. It now works.

[Bug 51224] Re: dvd-slideshow's dvd-menu calls mpeg2enc with -M2 which breaks

2007-06-11 Thread Heitzso
I apologize, but I posted the bug report a year ago and long ago changed
my scripts to use dvdauthor instead.

If dvd-slideshow's dvd-menu no longer calls mpeg2enc directly then my scripts
should run fine,
if I were still using dvd-slideshow's dvd-menu.

Out of curiosity, if mpeg2enc now works correctly then that would be a
nice note to add to this bug report.

[Bug 117597] libgeos-c1 likely broken feisty, undefined symbol

2007-05-29 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgeos-c1

I have a python - mapscript program running in apache that worked with self

Trying to switch over to feisty gdal/geos/py-mapscript repository packages.
I can get simple mapserver/mapserv cgi programs to run
but my python mapscript program dies with:

File /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/mapscript.py, line 5, in module,

I've double checked that the libs/modules are from feisty repository

I'm guessing the python mapscript - libgeos interaction is not tested due to
no one using.
Also possible other more common gis programs using another libgeos? ?? just
guessing.

[Bug 66411] Re: straight boot into EDGY from power off never succeeds

2007-04-25 Thread Heitzso
I'm the original reporter of the bug in Edgy. I recently upgraded my
laptop with this problem to Feisty and the problem went completely away.

I don't know if that helps anyone sort out the source of the problem so
that the fix could be backported to Edgy.

On my end I won't be able to test an Edgy fix for this since I'm now
running Feisty.

[Bug 108900] feisty postgres 8.2 leaving other packages behind

2007-04-22 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pgadmin3

I just upgraded to feisty and saw the postgres 8.1 is no longer
supported ... message. But then, when trying to setup the upgrade to
postgres 8.2 I noticed that several postgres db packages in the feisty
repositories are still wired to postgres 8.1 and w/o a corresponding 8.2
version. I believe postgis, pgadmin3, and others are affected.

For instance, if you try to remove libpq4 (tied to pg 8.1) you will find
yourself having to remove pgadmin3 which is dependent on pg 8.1.

So, this bug report is a minor okay, perhaps it's time to do some
cleanup regarding the push to 8.2 flag. Also, hopefully I'll be
flagged by email as this cleanup happens via this bug report so I know
when I can actually upgrade to 8.2. (In my case I'm dependent on
postgis which hasn't been upgraded to 8.2 in the repositories.

Thanks.

[Bug 80446] gnucash printing in Edgy clipped (broken)

2007-01-18 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnucash

Print a register report in gnucash.
Rightmost couple of characters are clipped.

I've printed to PS and to PDF files and the results are the same
when those files are viewed by evince as printing directly to
my cups HP LJ 4L printer.

This is a bad bug in that I'm hunting around for a live CD distro
with gnucash that I can run on my ubuntu/edgy system in order
to be able to print of reports. I've also unsuccessfully tried
to import my gnucash files into other accounting packages

[Bug 52803] Re: insufficient dependency on xfonts-utils

2006-10-05 Thread Heitzso
This morning, Oct. 5, tried to upgrade from Dapper to Edgy (x86 arch)
and hit this bug. I'm surprised it is still there if you're aiming for
an October release. This is not good. It really needs to be fixed asap
because everyone who upgrades is going to get bit by it and it is a mess
to work around by hand.

[Bug 60577] too many files/pipes open

2006-09-15 Thread Heitzso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I setup evolution with bogo filter as noted on web to try to slow down
spam. I get over 300 spam emails a day and that's no good. When I try
to ctrl-y filter a couple hundred emails in my junk folder to train
bogofilter, evolution locks up. Then I cannot close out evolution
except by kill -9. There are reports on the evolution email list of
possible fd leaks. Cannot ctrl-e my trash folder then either.

BTW, I had been using thunderbird but recent tbird breaks up and down
arrow during edit of email. Works diff in new thunderbird than any
other editer. I finally tossed tbird and tried to jump to evolution.
I've got a couple dozen folders to import so that was not trivial. But
evolutions failure to filter the spam breaks evolution. In my mind you
cannot setup evolution as the default email client without good spam
filter such as comes w/ tbird.

** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 55828] Re: PJL output from 1.2.2 client over IPP

2006-08-28 Thread Heitzso
my clean dapper on a new laptop was not printing to a gentoo cups server
(hplj4l) that worked fine before (also for osx, winxp, etc.). Problem as
noted above re a few lines of control commands then nothing. My fix
was to enable browsing on client then use one of the browsed printers
for default. I manually setup browsing on my client by modifying
/etc/cups/cups.d/browse.conf:

Browsing On
BrowseProtocols cups
BrowseAddress 192.168.12.255
BrowseShortNames Yes
BrowseAllow All
BrowseDeny None
BrowseInterval 30
BrowseOrder allow,deny
BrowsePort 631

If you use this change the browse address for your network setup.

[Bug 32913] Re: dvd-slideshow doesn't interact with dependant program properly

2006-06-28 Thread Heitzso
Not sure if this is what prior bug is about, but I've run into the
problem with dvd-slideshow's dvd-menu program looking for 'rpm' (around
line 353) which is now present in ubuntu because required for lsb
compliance (assume). But when 'rpm' is found dvd-menu then goes
prowling around the rpm repository to see if all dependencies are
available ... BUT LO AND BEHOLD ... there are no rpm repository files
present (of course). And lots of error messages printed. Also error
interacting with mpeg2enc but I'm not certain whether or not that's
fallout from other bug.
