[Bug 225139] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.25 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-05-05 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I'm almost sure it did, because I wondered why it asked to overwrite a
file I never touched. So I confirmed to overwrite it.

I should add that ubuntu-mininal and -desktop were installed.

[Bug 151883] Re: verbiste applet incompatible with compiz

2008-02-27 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Hi François and thank you for your help.

Unfortunately, I don't use Ubuntu anymore but Debian Testing.

This is currently version 0.1.19-2, and activating compiz from the
command line does not reveal the bug.

Compiz itself is version 0.6.3~git20071222.061ff159-1.

I see you're the Debian maintainer of verbiste and you uploaded a new
upstream version. I'm eager to backport and try it. Maybe we'll meet on

[Bug 182814] Re: firefox-3.0 crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_file_system_handle_gnome_vfs_finalize after nfs mount timeout

2008-02-20 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I had two NFS mounts in my fstab, one from my home network and one from
the office network. Given it was a laptop, both were set as noauto,
and mounted manually as required.

Apparently, it was trying to mount the home share while I was at the
office, but I can't remember if I clicked accidentally on the icon of
the Gnome mount applet, or if it happened in the GTK file dialog.

Anyway, I don't have this machine anymore and I have not configured NFS
on the new one yet.

I keep this report under the pillow to remember to set up NFS and trying
to reproduce the bug.

[Bug 188004] Re: [hardy] on volume mounting, two nautilus windows are opened

2008-02-06 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Mounting encrypted drives is a must because I'll soon require it.

But I recently noticed nautilus gained its own mount options. Go to
System Preferences File Manager Media (last tab).

The gnome-volume-manager preferences dialog is far better. The nautilus
(gvfs?) one should be deactivated and hidden in case gnome-volume-
manager takes over.

[Bug 189204] [NEW] [hardy] rhythmbox lost support of laptop hotkeys

2008-02-05 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I lost track of the time it happened, but within the last couple of
weeks. Rhythmbox doesn't react to my laptop hotkeys, wether it has the
focus or not.

I looked into the keyboard shortcut properties and tried to reassign
multimedia shortcuts. I noticed that the assigned values went from
hexadecimal values like 0xab to names like XF86AudioPause.

This is rhythmbox 0.11.4-0ubuntu3. I don't have xserver-xorg-input-evdev
installed.

Note that the hotkeys for sound and eject still work.

[Bug 187991] Re: [hardy] nautilus doesn't show the default application to open a file in the contextual menu

2008-02-05 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Right, it doesn't happen on the desktop.

Yes I use the browser mode. I went into the Nautilus preferences,
Behaviour tab, I unchecked the Always open in browse windows option
and refreshed the window. I had the default application back in the
contextual menu. When I check back the option, I lose it again.

I'm not sure about the labels, I translated them back to English. It
reads Comportement and Toujours ouvrir dans des fenêtres de
navigation.

I left the option checked, I don't want to open a window for each folder
I browse.

Another behaviour I noticed, when I uncheck the option from an existing
Nautilus window, it doesn't open a new window for each folder. It keeps
behaving in browse mode.

[Bug 188946] [NEW] [hardy] nautilus lost my bookmarks, reseted to defaults

2008-02-04 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

[Bug 188438] Re: Gnome-volume-manager attempts to moung media twice

2008-02-02 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 188004 ***

I am the reporter of bug #188004. I can tell his bug is not a duplicate.
I can also confirm it, I get the same error message when inserting a CD
or DVD.

In the bug report above, I didn't get any error message, just two
nautilus windows on the new mount point.

Regarding this new bug, I wonder if two Gnome tool concurrently try to
mount the newly detected device. Is there a conflict between gnome-
volume-manager and gnome-mount?

[Bug 187991] [NEW] [hardy] nautilus doesn't show the default application to open a file in the contextual menu

2008-02-01 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is nautilus 1:2.21.90-0ubuntu1.

I used to right-click on a icon to see which application will open if I
double click.

Now the default application is not showned, only the alternatives. I
need to either decide to open the file or right-click, go in properties
and click on the open with tab.

When there is no alternative set, you only see open with another
application. You can't tell if there really is a default application
associated, or none at all.

I hope this is a bug in the beta process and not a usability choice,
because now I feel like opening a file is unpredictible.

[Bug 187476] Re: mixer_applet2 crashed with signal 5 in g_return_if_fail_warning()

It probably just requires an upload of gnome-applet beta (2.21.90) with
all API changes.

[Bug 131446] Re: [gutsy]Deskbar results appears in a window

It's almost there but the focus is not gave to the input field. I wonder
how thoroughly it has been tested. I'll whine upstream.

[Bug 187000] [NEW] python-xdg example use /usr/bin/env python2

2008-01-29 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-xdg

They are located in /usr/share/doc/python-xdg/examples.

I don't know if it should be plain python or python2.5. Probably the
former given the Python policy.

[Bug 180422] Re: About Me has dependency on Evolution Data Server

2008-01-29 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I was just hit by this bug. I removed evolution-data-server too.

I don't remember if gnome-about-me used to run without evolution-data-
server, but now for sure it's bricked without it.

And g-a-m is not just about password changing: I use it for setting my
avatar in GDM.

Making Gnome Control Center depending on e-d-s maybe is too much, but can't we
have:
- either a better error message, telling to install e-d-s;
- or features requiring e-d-s disabled, but setting the avatar still available ?

[Bug 19045] Re: display top level packages

2008-01-29 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Less than more I would say, because add/remove doesn't list meta
packages, and I can't sort the listed application by installation
status. In synaptic I can sort search results with installed packages
first, but I can't filter application from libraries.

This bug report was about meta pacakges, my report asked about
integration of deborphan -a in synaptic.

[Bug 183364] Re: [hardy] lost sound when upgraded from 2.6.24-3-generic to 2.6.24-4-generic

2008-01-28 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Don't bother to paste your configuration: it's known and fixed upstream,
it just requires a sync.

Sadly enough, the -5 revision didn't include it. Now the the 2.6.24
kernel is officially out, I hope we'll soon have a stable package and be
able to enjoy music again.

[Bug 178101] Re: vinagre crashed with SIGSEGV in setcontext()

2008-01-25 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
- I start vinagre 0.4
- I click on the connect button
- I type the name of a remote machine
- I click on the connect button

On the first time I saw it consume nice CPU time. On the second time
it crashed right away.

In both cases, apport showed me the same traceback on
setcontext()/makecontext().

I can reproduce it when I type an IP of my network. None of them have a
VNC server listening. If I type a class C IP that can't be resolved in
my network, it doesn't crash.

Yes it is. I checked the changelog, the faulty patch is still listed in
the upstream changes. It should have been reverted.

And now I don't have the -3 kernel anymore, I can't listen to music. :-(

2008-01-20 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I just reproduced this bug trying to connect to a vino server protected
by a password. I viewed the remote desktop, tried to move the mouse but
it was stuck and selecting text on the remote terminal. I typed
Ctrl+Alt to release and... bang!

You also asked for the amount of connections. It was the first (and
only) connection I opened.

the built-in Ethernet port.

It's when I plug the cable into the USB replicator that things go wrong.

[Bug 174441] Re: [hardy] seahorse no longer manages ssh keys

2008-01-16 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I was about to file a bug about the seahorse agent managing the SSH
passphrase cache.

I used to have seahorse prompting for the SSH passphrase. For instance I
typed ssh myserver, and a dialog popped up automatically.

Now I have to type ssh-add before I can use my passphrase.

But the seahorse agent is still running:

herve 6400 0.0 0.3 22296 6872 ?Ss 09:33 0:00
/usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute x-session-manager
herve10198 0.0 0.3 45496 7676 ?Ss 12:22 0:00 seahorse-agent

And in the seahorse application, my SSH key is listed.

However, in the Searhose Preferences dialog, I think I lost a tab for
managing the SSH key.

Yet I have the version you mention:

ii seahorse 2.21.4-0ubuntu1
A Gnome front end for GnuPG

[Bug 183514] [hardy] seahorse agent no longer asks for the passphrase

2008-01-16 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

I used to have seahorse prompting for the SSH passphrase. For instance I
typed ssh myserver, and a dialog appeared automatically.

Now that I switched to Hardy, I have to type ssh-add at the start of
my session, like I was doing a year ago.

But the seahorse agent seems to be properly running:

herve 6400 0.0 0.3 22296 6872 ? Ss 09:33 0:00 /usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute
x-session-manager
herve 10198 0.0 0.3 45496 7676 ? Ss 12:22 0:00 seahorse-agent

And in the seahorse application, my SSH key is listed.

However, in the Passwords and encryption settings in the system
preferences, I think I lost a tab for managing the SSH key.

I have a version fixing some SSH issues but not mine:

ii seahorse 2.21.4-0ubuntu1 A Gnome front end for GnuPG

I took a look at the other bugs, but they relate conflicts with the GPG
agent. I don't have it installed anyway.

[Bug 183124] Re: [hardy] Ethernet port of USB replicator no longer working

2008-01-16 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
The output when the cable is plugged into the USB replicator is the
same, except for that new entry:

eth6:avahi Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr f4:ff:ff:ff:20:81
  inet adr:169.254.9.0 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Masque:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

And indeed the Ethernet interface is now up for Network Manager.

The :avahi suffix reminds me that I restored the Avahi service
yesterday to try network discovery. Would it be mandatory to support
Ethernet-over-USB adapters?

But as the IP is the DHCP fallback one, the connexion is useless.

not ready

When I plug the Ethernet cable, Network Manager tries and tries again to get a
DHCP response:

Jan 15 09:51:11 xiong kernel: [ 221.147346] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth5:
link becomes ready
Jan 15 09:51:11 xiong kernel: [ 221.149323] eth5: link down
(The line above is repeated 10 times.)
(Then the whole pattern is repeated forever.)

Sometimes I read variants:

half-duplex, lpa 0x

Jan 15 09:41:24 xiong dhcdbd: message_handler: message handler not found

[Bug 183364] [hardy] lost sound when upgraded from 2.6.24-3-generic to 2.6.24-4-generic

2008-01-15 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-sound-base

I upgraded the kernel today, now I have no sound.

I used to use pulseaudio, so I switched back to alsa in any case, but no
chance.

Everything looks OK, no application complains about the sound, I can use
the sound mixer, etc. Just no sound in either the high speakers or
through earphones.

At boot, I can hear the click when the sound card is activated.

I followed the Sound Troubleshooting wiki page but it was no help. I
just have to boot on the 2.6.24-3 kernel to have sound back.

I suppressed my ~/.asoundrc* files with no change.

I filed the bug against linux-sound-base, but it's only a guess.

I think I have a similar problem.

When you go the to Keyboard Shortcuts application, Do you have a list of
Sound, Desktop, etc. but empty?

I've been switching to Hardy and lost many default properties. I had to
reinstall Gnome, Metacity, and some X properties. Now it's a bit better
but I'm still trying to understand what happened.

[Bug 157007] workspace selector

2007-10-25 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I thought it would be already reported but I failed to find it.

Using Gutsy and Compiz prevents me from dragging windows to another
workspace using the workspace selector applet.

Switching back to Metacity solves the problem.

I think I'm looking at the big picture of focus issues in Compiz,
combined to my bug #151883 and another bug where I can hardly type the

[Bug 17297] Re: Orphan Search

2007-10-16 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
My wishes about Deborphan and Synaptic:

- in the filter configuration, Orphan is split into Orphan Libraries and
Top-level packages;
- the Orphan libraries filter exists by default but is hidden while Deborphan
is missing;
- installing Deborphan unveils this filter.

I'm not Joe Mama but I would like to save time in configuring Synaptic
and saving space.

This is true the dependency tracking feature of Synaptic works quite
well, but I require the verbosity of Deborphan in listing all packages
not required by any one.

My Deborphan is currently listing 70 packages, maybe only one third of
them is to remove, but Synaptic don't list them, like libgsl0 or all
*-dev.

[Bug 153324] explicit icons for drive mount applet

2007-10-16 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When unmounted, the icons all are the default white icon.

I have four of them and I need the tooltips to find the drive I want to
mount.

I'd like some preferences to set a specific icon to each one.

The neat feature would be the applet having a set of mounted/unmounted
icons for CD/DVD, NFS, Local Windows partition, etc. and the applet
automatically choosing the most appropriate one based on the fstab entry
(filesystem type, path...).

[Bug 148912] unable to maximise the window

2007-10-04 Thread Hervé Cauwelier

[Bug 148955] nautilus preview prevents unmounting USB key

2007-10-04 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I inserted a USB key and a nautilus window on /media/disk appeared.

I unmount using the disk mount applet, and I get the error message that
an application is blocking the operation.

Checking with lsof :

 $ lsof /media/disk
COMMANDPID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
nautilus 27981 herve 20r REG 8,17 66053 99 /media/disk/M5450PX.ppd

is shown on the icon, so the preview was already computed and the file

[Bug 148122] displayconfig hiding real problems

2007-10-02 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

(I chose the package I know but this is related to the failsafe X
feature.)

I just modified my X configuration, restarted, and saw displayconfig-gtk
instead of GDM.

I switched back to console, stopped GDM, cleaned up the xorg.conf,
restarted GDM... still displayconfig-gtk appearing.

I was a bit upset because I reverted all my changes and I thought I
restored a functional version.

I then remembered looking at the Xorg.0.log would be a good idea... I
figured out it was moved to Xorg.0.log.old.

I read there that there was a simple syntax error in my file, a
EndSction without the e.

Here is my report: displayconfig-gtk (or the failsafe X) is hiding the error
message we had before.
I would prefer some dialog window open up above displayconfig-gtk to report
*why* the user see this screen.
I would then have fixed the error at once.

Please report some dialog like :

The graphical interface failed to start because of the following error:

XXX (the errors from X log)

Please check the configuration and validate to continue.

[Bug 146224] displayconfig-restore is requiring functional X to run

2007-09-28 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

I'm running Gutsy and tried displayconfig, both GTK and KDE versions.
They exploded my X configuration, yet this is not the bug I'm reporting.

When rebooting, X seemed to have started but only offered a black
screen. So I rebooted in single mode and called displayconfig-restore in
the hope of restoring my initial configuration.

But displayconfig-restore is requiring X to run, which is a strange
architectural choice for a program design to restore a functional X
configuration.

And I'm even more afraid by the homepage of displayconfig, which seems

that fsck was checking the root partition.

Is your bug similar or should I file a new one?

[Bug 128688] Re: firefox/gutsy showing images about 20% bigger

2007-08-10 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
I eventually found there was an imagezoom.defaultGlobalZoom setting
set to 120%. It remains strange that it suddenly changed without
updating that Image Zoom extension, but nevermind. I set it to 100 and
it instantly fixed the image issue.

Thanks for taking care.

[Bug 128688] firefox/gutsy showing images about 20% bigger

2007-07-27 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I'm running Gutsy and I updated my system yesterday 26 June.

Now Firefox is showing images about 20% bigger (see attachments).

I thought it could be a recent update of ubufox so I removed it but no
luck.

I have installed nor removed any extension.

[Bug 121228] Re: [gutsy] segfault retrieving passphrase for WiFi network

2007-06-27 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
The first time I ask to switch to my Wi-Fi network, gnome-keying-manager
is asking permission for giving the passphrase to nm-applet:

Allow application access to keyring?
-
The application 'nm-applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants to access the password
for '' in (null).

I grant access and nm-applet crashes.

Notice the null reference in the dialog. It looks like an API/ABI
mismatch.

[Bug 117927] OOo crashes when myspell-fr-gut is installed

2007-05-31 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Using gutsy and the following packages:
openoffice.org 2.2.0-1ubuntu3
myspell-fr 1.4-20
myspell-fr-gut 1:1.0-19

OOo is starting normally but when a (existing or blank) document is
open, it displays for one second then OOo crashes:

  /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/libspell680li.so: undefined symbol:
_ZN8Hunspell5spellEPKc

It happens when myspell-fr or myspell-fr-gut is installed and I open a
document in French. I guess OOo is starting spellchecking in background.

Removing myspell-fr* or opening a document in English doesn't crash.

I wanted to recompile a myspell package from Debian but versions are in
sync.

[Bug 117319] xorg intel driver: chosing too high frequency

2007-05-28 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I am running Gutsy and using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.0.0-1ubuntu2
on a Dell Latitude X300.

When using a LCD monitor on the external output, the resolution is
correctly set to 1280x1024 (instead of the native 1024x768) but the
display is padded to the left, leaving like 50 pixels of a black stripe
on the right edge. The auto adjustment button on the monitor didn't
help.

Inspecting the differences, here are what the monitor OSD reported with the
i810 driver:
  80.0kHz 75Hz PP 1280x1024

And the intel driver:
  80.5kHz 75Hz NP 1280x1024

Looking like the intel driver chosed a too high resolution, I downsized
it to 60 Hz and it fixed the black stripe problem.

So the bug is either the intel driver is too optimistic on the monitor
capabilities, or the monitor is lying.

I set no horizontal or vertical frequency in the xorg.conf, neither a
modeline.

I can provide xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log with i810 and intel drivers, compile
and test patches.

[Bug 103714] linux-headers-2.6.20-14: include/linux/mmc/protocol.h missing

2007-04-06 Thread Hervé Cauwelier
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Until linux-headers-2.6.20-12 I had the file
include/linux/mmc/protocol.h. I need it to compile the experimental
driver sdricohcs (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sdricohcs/).

With 2.6.20-13 and 14 I see two new headers core.h and sd.h. But the
API changed too much to compile sdricohcs.

Oddly enough, looking the kernel gitweb for 2.6.21 and the mmc branch,
protocol.h is still present and no trace of core.h

Where these changes come from so I can update the API usage?
