2022-04-21 Thread HugoHirsch
After diffing egrep and fgrep in /bin and /usr/bin,
spotting no difference and removing the /bin version I was able to continue my
installation.

[Bug 1611482] Re: System freezes with noveau and GT210 card when Chromium or any video/audio application is started

2016-08-19 Thread HugoHirsch
Interesting that noone reacted on the bug.

I was able to circumenvent the problem with the proprietary nvidia
drivers. Actually I wanted to avoid this on a new installation, but I'm
unable to work if the system freezes randomly if I enter a webpage with
a video or launch a video podcast :-(

[Bug 1611486] [NEW] Radiotray does not start on a vanilla 16.04

2016-08-09 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

Coming from a working 14.04 radiotray I did a vanilla installation of 16.04 and
apt install radiotray, that brought in

$ apt-cache policy radiotray
radiotray:
  Installed: 0.7.3-5ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7.3-5ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.7.3-5ubuntu1 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Whenever I launch radiotray nothing happens but the console shows:
$ radiotray
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/radiotray/XmlDataProvider.py:23: PyGIWarning:
Gtk was imported without specifying a version first. Use
gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import to ensure that the right version
gets loaded.

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/radiotray", line 12, in
os.chdir(workdir)
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/usr/bin/src'

Is that a packaging problem? Do I need to install multiple versions of
python to make this app run again?

[Bug 1611482] [NEW] System freezes with noveau and GT210 card when Chromium or any video/audio application is started

2016-08-09 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

This is a vanilla installation of 16.0.4 without any nvidia drivers,
just the default noveau installation.

When I launch chromium or a podcast via gpodder/totem the screen gets
marbled and the machine hangs /no reaction on mouse movements or
keyboard clicks or numlock on/off).

When I ssh into the machine I see loads of log spam:

[Bug 1609127] [NEW] Installer localization error

2016-08-02 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

When I tried to install via amd64-bit-live install 16.04.01 I realized -
after changing the locale to German - that the Skip button is still
English. It's supposed to be German as well.

Not sure which package that affects, trying to look for 'installer' did
not give any results.

[Bug 1539513] Re: networkmanager segfaults with 3.2.21-1ubuntu1

2016-01-30 Thread HugoHirsch
What a nasty issue - in case other people run into it as well (like said in the
forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2311705).

A direct download link for 14.04.0.3 is:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/amd64/libnl-route-3-200/download
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/amd64/libnl-genl-3-200/download
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/amd64/libnl-3-200/download
so you can choose a mirror near you.

This time it has not been a kernel issue, luckily.

[Bug 1539634] Re: network-manager crashes when using libnl-3-200-3.21.1-1ubuntu1

2016-01-30 Thread HugoHirsch
Is it possible to somehow block libnl-updates until the network-manager
fix is available as well?

Otherwise people are going to run into networkless systems as reported in
#1539513
Since 14.04 is a LTS this is rather risky indeed.

2015-06-05 Thread HugoHirsch
All 3 commands do not help with me - they just extend the delay between
freezes from 3-5min to 20min.

Linux box 3.13.0-54-generic #91-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 26 19:15:08 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

This is really nasty since every hard reboot deletes my SoftRAID and
triggers a time-consuming resync in case the machine comes up again.

[Bug 1422513] Re: Lenovo S10e: no USB wireless lan hardware recognized if internal wireless is disabled via hardware switch

2015-02-18 Thread HugoHirsch
Same behaviour with:
3.19.0-031900.201502091451 i386/32bit.

Both adapters are enabled if the hardware switch is on, once it's off
the network manager menu says that Wireless networks are disabled by
hardware switch. If I plug out the USB and plug it in it is still not
recognized.

2015-02-18 Thread HugoHirsch
I ran into this problem when running with an upstream kernel -
installing above bcmwl-kernel-source disables my WLAN (bug 1385059).
Thus I prefer the WLAN and life with the 'System problem detected'-popup
upon each startup.

Lenovo S10e running 14.10 and
3.19.0-031900.201502091451 upstream kernel.

Sorry for the long delay - when working on upstream kernel testing with
3.19.0-031900.201502091451 i386/32bit
to confirm bug 1422513 I realized that the internal Broadcom chip works fine
after uninstalling
bcmwl-kernel-source and running with above kernel.

b43 seems to do fine in that case as lsmod indicates:

[Bug 1422513] [NEW] Lenovo S10e: no USB wireless lan hardware recognized if internal wireless is disabled via hardware switch

2015-02-16 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

After having reported problems with my S10e's WLAN I bought an USB WLAN
dongle, that works fine.

But it only works if the hardware switch for WLAN is enabled - thus at
the moment the internal WLAN interface and the external need to be on to
make it work. Unfortunately (as reported in bug 1385059) this means that
the internal interface is sucking up my battery when it tries to connect
without success.

My expected behaviour would be to disable the internal WLAN via hardware
switch and be able to plugin my USB WLAN dongle.

I've attached lsmod-output with WLAN enabled (USB dongle working
perfectly, while internal WLAN hardware is constantly scanning for
networks) and after disabling the internal WLAN.

2015-02-16 Thread HugoHirsch
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

[Bug 1236951] Re: package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-11-28 Thread HugoHirsch
I was able to get rid of the amount of error messages during every
update by just purging and reinstalling the packages.

sudo aptitude purge tex-common kile texlive
sudo aptitude install tex-common
sudo aptitude install kile
sudo aptitude install texlive

Hope this helps other people as well.

[Bug 1385065] [NEW] Minor localization errors - 14.10 - German

2014-10-24 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

After updating to 14.10 I realized some minor localization missing for
German:

1. If you open the menu bar/top right button in Unity to logout/reboot
etc. the second menu option is still English (Ubuntu Help), while the
other menu items are properly localized.

2.If you open the first menu item (About this machine/box) to get all
system properties of Unity, switch to the sub menu data privacy/security
the option list when to ask for passwords contains string not being
localized to German (see screenshot attached)

Not sure which package is the proper choice ...
thanks :-)

[Bug 1385059] Re: no wlan on lenovo s10e - Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

2014-10-24 Thread HugoHirsch
Thanks for pointing me to the Mainline Builds. When I tried to install
linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_i386.deb
et.al. I ran into the problem described in #1358966.

I'm not sure if the proposed patch would help to solve my problem -
after further debugging it seems that the pure hardware itself seems to
be recognized, but a wireless network connection cannot be established:

[Bug 1385065] Re: string not translatable

2014-10-24 Thread HugoHirsch
Thanks for your comments and changes. In case the String (menu item '0
seconds (lock immeditiately)') is not translatable that should be noted
and changed since it's a major inconsistency in the UI and an obstacle
for users not able to read English.

Is there a specific package to report this bug against?

Thanks

There's a popup that wants to report the bug under KDE, but the bug does
not seem to be reported since shortly after confirming to report a bug a
new popup tells me that there's lack of space for a bug report (which
isn't as a df --si shows).

Since I'm not sure whether this bug is triggered or is a packagekitd bug
and didn't find any meaningful web search results I hope that someone
else experiences these problems.

[Bug 1314405] Re: Screen freezes due to Xorg crashed SIGABRT and nouveau error

Trying to switch back to nvidia seems to not have worked correctly, thus
noveau is loaded as fallback and the machine just froze again.

[Bug 1314405] Re: Screen freezes due to Xorg crashed SIGABRT and nouveau error

2014-06-21 Thread HugoHirsch
The problem still remains active.

After 2014-05-25 I switched to proprietary nvidia 331.38 for my GT218
[GeForce 210] graphics card and did not experience any more machine
freezes and display hickups.

Just yesterday I switched back to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and
experienced the screen and machine freeze just now - relevant output
from dmesg is:

[Bug 1314405] Re: Screen freezes due to Xorg crashed SIGABRT and noveau error

2014-05-24 Thread HugoHirsch
My last comment seems to be wrong - the crash just happened with KDE, so
no direct connection to running Unity. System worked fine before
upgrading to 14.04.

These are the last lines of my dmesg when the screen is freezing and I have to

Not sure what else I can provide to give more hints. Is it a hardware
problem with the graphics card or a bug in X/noveau?

[Bug 1312895] Re: Cannot login into KDE after upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

2014-05-08 Thread HugoHirsch
Problem remains after upgrading to
   kde-workspace-bin:amd64 4:4.11.8-0ubuntu6 = 4:4.11.9-0ubuntu0.2
kde-workspace-data:all 4:4.11.9-0ubuntu0.1 = 4:4.11.9-0ubuntu0.2

The /usr/bin/startkde still contains the lines that should have been
patched a while ago; not sure why this remains to be problematic.

2014-05-07 Thread HugoHirsch
The problem seems to be connected to unity. If I run a KDE session I
wasn't able to reproduce the problem, but unity just freezes after
running a while without me actively doing anything with the box (audio
was running).

Neither root nor my normal user has any of these files/directories - the

Not sure whether I can fix it by removing some packages, but trying to
reinstall kile did not help at all.

[Bug 1314405] Re: Screen freezes due to Xorg crashed SIGABRT and noveau error

_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash contains the actual crash, while the automatically
added stuff just shows the system after a reboot after the SIGABRT
happened.

[Bug 1314405] [NEW] Screen freezes due to Xorg crashed SIGABRT and noveau error

2014-04-29 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

The machine just freezes in my Unity session, sometimes after minutes,
sometimes after some hours.
Any audio is running about ten minutes longer before the machine either reboots
or Xorg is reloaded. Happens daily since updating to 14.04. I cannot change to
different terminals to manually reload Xorg, the machine is blocked once the
screen freezes.

Trying to report the problem via aport-gtk yields an error upon upload:
Apr 29 23:03:08 m whoopsie[1380]: message repeated 3 times: [ offline]

Apr 29 23:05:09 m whoopsie[1380]: Could not upload; processing later
(/var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash).
Sometimes I do see the aport-UI after logging in to my unity session, but the
screen disappears and my unity session is loaded 1 second later.

[Bug 1312895] [NEW] Cannot login into KDE after upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

2014-04-25 Thread HugoHirsch
Public bug reported:

After having run an upgrade to 14.04 I'm not able to login into a KDE session
anymore.
I do get the stuff described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-workspace/+bug/1304805

My /usr/bin/startkde contains the problematic quotes although my package
version is greater than the one proposed as a fix in case 1304805.

[Bug 1312895] Re: Cannot login into KDE after upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

2014-04-25 Thread HugoHirsch
Manually removing the quotes makes the KDE session start again. I am not
sure whether this really solves the bug mentioned in case
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-workspace/+bug/1304805 but
I would like to make clear that a newer version does not seem to contain
the proposed fix and might break KDE systems after upgrading to 14.04.

[Bug 663457] Re: DistUpgraders output window should be resizable and initial size should fit the screen

The current graphical installer for 12.10 solved this problem, but I'm
not sure about the textual install or upgrade since I've upgraded the
box with a fresh SSD-install - could anyone check whether the same
problem is still eminent for 'regular' dist-upgrades?
