To fix the mess made by insserv, this is what I did:
* figure out which package each init script belonged to
* figure out which of those packages were installed, and which were residual
* purge the packages that were residual
* delete all the symlinks under /etc/rc*.d/
* reinstall the packages
This bug causes the Natty-Oneiric upgrade to fail, and so I think this
patch needs to be backported to Natty as a high-priority update ASAP.

So far the leaks identified in the bugs I filed above are relatively
small, and they don't account for the massive leaks I am seeing. Each
time I disable and then re-enable the wireless using hotkeys, it causes
nm-applet to consume between 300K and 500K of additional memory. The

I can confirm that the bug exists, and simply rebooting does not fix it
for me. In my case all the necessary processes are running, and I can
switch input methods using hotkeys. However, the language panel does
not show up no matter what I choose in the iBus preferences.

at a patch (minimally tested). It fixes this bug, but it is possible
that it may introduce new bugs due to lock contention (i.e. calling

functions are sometimes called in the main thread when GTK is already
locked and should not be locked again, and sometimes they are called in
a worker thread when GTK needs to be locked. As expected, it causes
deadlock.
