Unfortunately not, as this system is not just for testing purposes and runs
services I need in a functional order.

[Bug 1213403] Re: 0cf3:7015 Whole system freeze with TL-WN821N USB wifi adapter

2013-08-22 Thread James Clemence
Bug appears to exist upstream in version 3.11.0-031100rc6.201308181835.
Have added the above tags as requested. Basically rebooting into the new
kernel leads to the same issue with a complete freeze until the USB key
is unplugged and replugged. At that time, the system returns to normal.
I haven't had it lock up yet during normal use, only on reboot. Attached
is a syslog from an affected reboot.

** Description changed:

My server occasionally suddenly hangs, and the wifi network cuts out.
This is then only fixed by unplugging and replugging in the USB wifi
adapter in question, and then the system suddenly restores itself and
works again. When the system freezes, the whole input/output system
fails, and any plugged in keyboards will not work until the USB stick is
unplugged and replugged. This is a very frustrating bug, and has started
  happening with significant frequency recently.

It has happened on/off since precise, but as I was using the usb
adapter on my desktop I could just pull it out and put it back in very
quickly. Now it is on a server this bug is more significant!

[Bug 1048293] Re: NM hangs using USB Wi-Fi adapter -- TP-Link TL-WN821N ar9170usb

2012-09-10 Thread James Clemence
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected running-unity

** Description changed:

I have a TP-Link TL-WN821N, which I use with windows without issue. It
works in Ubuntu however suddenly the Network manager process locks up
and crashes, occasionally with a stacktrace (an example is attached).
This happens randomly with no warning, and needs the system reset to
correct the issue and start the key working again.

I originally had the issue using the ar9170usb driver, and followed the
  advice in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/540827 in
the hope I could use carl9170
  (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170) rather than
ar9170usb. However, once I blacklisted the ar9170usb driver, I get:

  Sep 9 17:10:49 ethel kernel: [ 310.170984] cfg80211: Updating
information on frequency 2412 MHz for a 20 MHz width channel with
  regulatory rule

I had been led to believe that the ar9170usb had been removed from the
Kernel in 3.0+ (http://wiki.debian.org/carl9170) but it appeared to be
there on my system as the driver was being used ...

Does this mean it is actually using cfg80211 rather than carl9170? If
this is correct how do I get it to adjust?

Thanks for any help, this is a bit of a blocker at the moment for me!

[Bug 1048293] Re: NM hangs using USB Wi-Fi adapter -- TP-Link TL-WN821N ar9170usb

2012-09-10 Thread James Clemence
apport information

[Bug 1048293] [NEW] Network Manager gets locked and crashed on a regular basis with USB wifi key

2012-09-09 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

Some extra info:

Looks like ath9k_htc is the correct driver for v3. However I'm still
getting the system hangs ...

[Bug 980288] Re: Kernels 3.2.0.21 fail to boot 'out of partition'

2012-04-13 Thread James Clemence
Tested v3.2.12, I get no boot - I can select it from Grub then the
screen goes blank and I get no further. System hangs, no graphical
output, no boot to desktop, no error messages/stacktrace, no obvious
activity on the HDD (can't see any lights activating).

Just to confirm - they are the two I have installed already? If so I can
confirm v3.2.0-22 present, v3.2.0-23 present, v3.2.0-21 absent.

Hmm, maybe it will be easier to bisect between Ubuntu kernels.  Can you
 test the following two kernels:

v3.2.0-21 to confirm the bug does not exist:

v3.2.0-22 to confirm the bug does exist:
 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.2.0-22.35

A link to your arch can be found under the Builds section on the
 previous two pages.

I will then bisect between those two versions if you report back where
the bug does and does not exist.

 Thanks again.

[Bug 980288] [NEW] Kernels 3.2.0.21 fail to boot 'out of partition'

2012-04-12 Thread James Clemence

Since upgrades to 3.2.0-22 and 3.2.0-23, I keep getting grub errors 'out

[Bug 952994] [NEW] Compiz broken installation this morning - removed packages

2012-03-12 Thread James Clemence
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 952943 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/952943

Public bug reported:

Having run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade this morning, part of the
package process removed unity and compiz from the system, I think due to
broken dependencies:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
unity : Depends: compiz but it is not going to be installed
Depends: compiz-core-abiversion-20120216 but it is not installable
Depends: libnux-abiversion-20120212.01 but it is not installable
Depends: compiz-plugins-main-default but it is not going to be
installed
Recommends: unity-lens-video but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: indicator-printers but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Clearly this shouldn't happen (removing the core GUI elements from the
system). Could this be resolved?

[Bug 952983] Re: Unity fails to start following some updates this morning

2012-03-12 Thread James Clemence
This appears to be due to broken packages in the archive:

unity : Depends: compiz but it is not going to be installed

Depends: libnux-abiversion-20120212.01 but it is not installable

The update this morning appears to have removed unity (hence the reason that it
doesn't start!)

[Bug 952353] [NEW] LVM based swap partition causes delay to booting

2012-03-11 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

Having upgraded to precise, the boot process keeps hanging with the
message to 'wait for partition' before boot completion. The system
always has to wait for the lvm based swap. This didn't happen
previously, and I'm not sure precisely why it hangs now, whereas it
didn't before. The rest of the boot completes normally, and the swap is
activated as expected, however it takes longer, and presents an error
message - perhaps components are enabled too late for the mount point?

[Bug 850904] [NEW] Non-mirrored displays fails to align monitors, 'required virtual size does not fit available'

2011-09-15 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

When using the gnome display config, I used to be able to have my
monitors in a non-mirrored display setup. However, now when I select the
non-mirrored variety, I get the following error:

'The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2560, 1024),
minimum=(320,200), maximum(1280, 1280)'

This has always worked in the past, but now I can't have my dual monitor
setup side-by-side which is clearly a regression.

[Bug 849956] [NEW] Deja dup has no option for S3 any more

2011-09-14 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

I opened Deja Dup on Oneiric today, to find that when selecting a backup
location, I only have the options of:

Local Folder
FTP
SSH
WebDAV
Windows Share
Custom location

Previously there was an 'S3' option in that list. Where has it gone? In
its place, how is one supposed to set up backups to/from s3?

Thanks

[Bug 849017] [NEW] Oneiric appearance settings won't let you change icon theme

2011-09-13 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

In prior versions of ubuntu (Natty included) you could visit the
'appearance' menu to change the iconset associated with a theme. In
Oneiric this is no longer possible, visiting the appearance menu has no
option to change the icon theme, which is a regression in functionality.

This may be on the wrong package at present, as I don't know what the
'appearance' application is!

[Bug 763599] [NEW] Applications are listed multiple times in main unity application launcher

2011-04-17 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When you view the unity applicaiton launcher, there are some
applications listed multiple times - including the wine launched
spotify, and mendeley desktop:

mendeleydesktop:
  Installed: 0.9.9.1
  Candidate: 0.9.9.1
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.9.1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

This looks messy and shouldn't happen - each application should only be
listed once. I checked alacarte to see whether there were duplicates in
the original menu and this was not the case.

See screenshots for more info.

[Bug 756882] [NEW] Unity mysteriously loses theme

2011-04-10 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

Randomly unity seems to lose its theme, which is restored by logging out

If there is anything more I can do to help, let me know, but I can't
predict when it happens, it seems to just randomly fail.

That would be why you haven't reproduced the bug. I should think,

2011-01-20 Thread James Clemence

More 'add to launcher' failures with unity side menu. LibreOffice from
the PPA on launchpad does not have such a menu item.

[Bug 695998] [NEW] Inkscape top menu disappears from unity top bar

2010-12-31 Thread James Clemence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When running inkscape on Ubuntu Maverick, after initially showing the
entire top menu in the global menubar, the menu items disappear, leaving
an empty menu, which is really irritating. If this could be fixed that
would be ideal.

[Bug 681610] Re: No keyboard bindings to go to desktop wall/expose mode

2010-12-28 Thread James Clemence
The top left icon is the ubuntu icon in the top left of the screen on
the current netbook remix release. When I first installed netbook remix
on maverick, that icon used to do an 'expose' like effect for all
currently open windows. That same icon now opens the window with a
series of buttons to select 'web', 'chat and email', 'office' ... etc.
