2019-01-08 Thread James M Knock
Sorry, this is so old that I've forgotten what it was about and the
circumstances. Also, I never understood the issues. I have since upgraded
to 18.04 and then to 18.04.1. I've also gotten out of the habit of
reporting such things. I will start reporting them again.

[Bug 1349123] Re: create ubuntu software center account captcha is impossible to solve

2015-11-11 Thread James M
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1033598 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1033598

I tried for half an hour, I was sure I was getting almost half of them right
but I always was including a space. So you're not supposed to put a space even
though every other two word captcha does? This captcha is ridiculous! People
are going to give up. I had to sign up from https://login.ubuntu.com.
The bug entries for not being able to make an account should be accessible by
people who don't have accounts - otherwise you get a catch 22.

[Bug 1338442] [NEW] Cannot paste in web apps

2014-07-07 Thread James M. Roche
Public bug reported:

I cannot paste, either with a right-click context menu (no context menu
appears) or by using Ctr+V, into web apps. This is especially a problem
because I use Lastpass, so all my passwords are 20+ character long
strings of random letters, numbers, and special characters. Typing in my
passwords manually is too much of a chore to make it worth the effort,
thus rendering webapps effectively unusable for my purposes.

[Bug 1333594] [NEW] Ubuntu-touch breaks system

2014-06-24 Thread James M. Roche
Public bug reported:

Expected: Hopefully be able to use the Ubuntu tablet interface on my laptop,
after choosing Ubuntu Mobile session instead of Ubuntu Desktop session on
the login screen.
What Happened: Could not log in to mobile session; After restarting, am stuck
with a blank purple screen after the initial GRUB screen.

I installed packagekit and ubuntu-touch on my ASUS touchscreen laptop,
hoping to check it out the Ubuntu tablet interface and get better use
out of my touchscreen.

I knew that I hadn't done the necessary research and that an outcome
like this was a distinct possibility, and so I didn't lose anything I
wasn't prepared to. But still... I'm pretty sure this counts as a bug.
Installing a package shouldn't be able to break your system and render
it incapable of booting.

[Bug 885991] Re: no window manager on second screen for dual head mode

2013-10-16 Thread James M. Leddy
I'm unable to reproduce this bug, as well as bug 885989. The seccond
screen in xorg.conf does not appear to work (see Xorg.0.log). I do have
dual (physical) screens working great via xrandr and gnome-settings
daemon. This is using fglrx-updates-12.104-0ubuntu0.0.1 and kernel 3.2
in precise.

Here are the relevent sections of Xorg.0.log

[Bug 885989] Re: white screen on second monitor when using two xsessions

2013-10-16 Thread James M. Leddy
I'm unable to reproduce this bug, as well as bug 885991. The seccond
screen in xorg.conf does not appear to work (see Xorg.0.log). I do have
dual (physical) screens working great via xrandr and gnome-settings
daemon. This is using fglrx-updates-12.104-0ubuntu0.0.1 and kernel 3.2
in precise.

Here are the relevent sections of Xorg.0.log

[Bug 1234260] [NEW] Package and use 'intel_l3_parity' binary

2013-10-02 Thread James M. Leddy
Public bug reported:

For Haswell systems, Intel has created a new tool called
'intel_l3_parity'. They have requested that we use this so that we can
make use of the l3 parity feature on these cards. Quote:

DPF (L3 Parity): Haswell has extra cache which can be dynamically (during run
time)
used to replace cachelines which are exhibiting faulty behavior.

It follows that Haswell also has the ability to detect the errors.

Kernel driver receives the error interrupts and reports them to userspace via
udev.
The event is a parity error.

Userspace should be listening for the udev events, and handling them in
whatever way
  they see fit.

We expected OSVs to add such hooks to their distributions, and use the
intel_l3_parity
tool to be invoked by their udev rules as needed.

The code for the binary can be found here, it looks like they're
planning on adding it to the linux kernel tree but afact it's not in
Linus' tree yet:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.drivers.intel/10847/match=intel_l3_parity

Also I haven't seen a udev script from them as yet. According to Intel
the way it works is that udev has to catch the party check and then do
the right thing by calling intel_l3_parity the right way.

[Bug 408903] Re: Does not handle microphone mute button (KEY_MICMUTE)

2013-09-12 Thread James M. Leddy
right, we still need to change other components, I've tagged the
verification-done because the only piece up for verification at the
moment is libx11 and you verified that one, getting it in updates would
put us one step closer from fixing the issue right?

This is exactly right.

Additionally, this requires a revert of xkeyboard-config that we have in
-proposed. I'm not sure how to work that because this is my first
verification-failed bug, but I assume I can just revert it.

Do you need revert or extra changes? in any case the update is in
precise-updates so you can't verification-failed it anymore (that's just used
to get things dropped from proposed/not copied to updates), you need another
upload on top of the current version

This is in relation to bug #937822. Since that bug is verification-
failed, we pulled the update of xkeyboard-config from the -proposed
archive. But it's still living out in the launchpad bzr code archive. So
specifically, my question is whether I should branch from the -updates
lp archive or the -proposed lp archive (and pull the patch, as I have
have done). I've ran into this situation before in bug 1011073 but
cyphermox solved it for me. Sorry if this is too much minutia.

[Bug 408903] Re: Does not handle microphone mute button (KEY_MICMUTE)

2013-09-10 Thread James M. Leddy
Sebastien,

Thanks for flipping the tag. As noted in comment #108 , we still need
backports of udev, gnome-settings-daemon, and xkeyboard-config to close
this bug out. Additionally, this requires a revert of xkeyboard-config
that we have in -proposed. I'm not sure how to work that because this is
my first verification-failed bug, but I assume I can just revert it.

https://code.launchpad.net/~jm-leddy/ubuntu/precise/xkeyboard-
config/micmute

We have two vendors in addition to Lenovo that have added micmute keys
since this bug has been opened, and we're shipping 12.04 as the standard
for all oem builds. So this bug has a higher priority now.

good that enterprise users that are actually using these disks are going

[Bug 1183125] Re: Haswell: Ensuring HDA codec pins refer to physical outputs

2013-08-06 Thread James M. Leddy
Hi Jason,

Thanks for your help. Ultimately, I think there is more too it than
that. These are the latest comments from our audio developer, David
Henningsson, about the issue:

I hope I can remember the situation correctly. This is essentially a
longer version of what I wrote before.

First, the unusual thing about these particular devices is that it seems
the integrated monitor is internally connected over HDMI.

This means that, seen from the driver's perspective, there are two HDMI
outputs. This has been less tested than one HDMI output (on Haswell),
but there are chances this works better in the 3.11 kernel - I'm not sure.

Second, the internal monitor does not have any audio capabilities (the
internal analog audio is connected to the ALC668 codec, not the HDMI
monitor), but still, the internal monitor advertises audio capabilities
(as seen in ELD info). This is something we could talk to the OSV about, to
see if they could change this: the monitor should not advertise being
able to play back audio, if it can't.

Third, (maybe meant as a workaround to the just mentioned issue about
ELD info?) some audio codec pins are marked as not connected by BIOS.
However, this workaround is not working, at least not on Linux. This is
where I've been trying to get clear answers from Intel, but still have
not received any, even though we have had long discussions and even
phone calls about it.

In short, there seem to be uncertainty on the Intel side how their
hardware actually works: First, how the audio codec pins are actually
connected to the available physical outputs, pipes or transcoders.
Second, if disabling pins in BIOS should be regarded as an error on the
Haswell platform or not. Some Intel developers think so, but we need a
clear statement from Intel that this is the case before we can tell the OEM
they should change BIOS.

I hope this clarifies the status of this issue.

[Bug 1032433] Re: Using WEP 128-bit Passphrase, Ad-hoc connection cannot be established

2013-07-31 Thread James M. Leddy
Franz,

12345 from the server side looks like a 40 bit key (8 bits per
character, multiplied by 5 characters). This would explain why it's
working when you use that option. In order to be completely sure that
it's not a 40 bit key, would you please re-create your server
environment with a WEP-128 passphrase of something like '123456'? Thank
you.

[Bug 1194934] Re: eDP powered off while attempting aux channel communication

2013-07-03 Thread James M. Leddy
Test log attached.

At beginning I tested with
sudo fwts s3 --s3-multiple=30 --s3-min-delay=10 --s3-max-delay=15
and had following results:

3.5.0-32 (lts-quantal) PASS (30/30)
3.8.0-25-generic (lts-raring) FAIL (FAILED at 7/30)
3.8.0 (mainline ppa) FAIL (did twice, FAILED at 21/30, 16/30)
3.8.4 (mainline ppa) FAIL (FAILED at 8/30)
3.8.6 (mainline ppa) FAIL (FAILED at 21/30)
3.8.13 (mainline ppa) FAIL (FAILED at 5/30)
3.9.3 (mainline ppa) FAIL (FAILED at 9/30)
3.10.0 (mainline ppa) PASS (30/30)

When system FAIL, ALT+SYSRQ+B can't reboot the system.

After then I retested with
sudo fwts s3 --s3-multiple=30 --s3-min-delay=20 --s3-max-delay=40
on 3.9.3 kernel. (since it passed by #31).
It did pass the 30 times stress test, however after the last resume its display
gone.
But ALT+SYSRQ+B can reboot the system and numlock led is still active also.
I'll have more tests tomorrow.

It's x11proto-core-dev, if you get stuck with that again, you can figure
it out by following the link in the call to test the proposed package:

This change looks pretty big, is there any chance that we can SRU this

a fair amount of hardware that is failing here:

[Bug 1194934] Re: eDP powered off while attempting aux channel communication

2013-06-26 Thread James M. Leddy
From the engineer debugging the case:

I noted there is one thing interesting and may be useful for your 3.9.3
backporting:

the i915 Call Trace message will appear when the system is:
1. 3.5.0-32(default) + 3.8.6 i915 backport dkms
2. 3.9.3

the i915 Call Trace message won't appear when the system is:
1. 3.5.0-32(default) without 3.8.6 i915 backport dkms
2. 3.10-rc3

only 3.5.0-32(default) + 3.8.6 i915 backport dkms raised this bug,
so I think the Call Trace message in comment 2 may not directly raise this bug

[Bug 408903] Re: Does not handle microphone mute button (KEY_MICMUTE)

2013-06-25 Thread James M. Leddy
Hi Lothar,

In order to get full functionality, you have got to download x11-proto-
core (sounds like that's already done), and then follow steps 3 and 4
from comment 108. If haven't compiled Ubuntu packages from source
before, this bug probably isn't the best place to start ;)

[Bug 1011073] Re: NetworkManager submenus sometimes unpopulated

2013-06-20 Thread James M. Leddy
I would use a combination of apt-get build-dep and bzr builddeb. You can
find more information about bzr builddeb here. Basically just checkout
the branch and build it, probably with -uc -us.

http://doc.bazaar.canonical.com/plugins/en/builddeb-plugin.html
http://jameswestby.net/bzr/builddeb/user_manual/

Rolling back is an issue, since I used the versioning scheme in order to
get it merged. Should only be a simple dpkg -r once the real package
lands in -updates though.
