I don't agree that this bug report is a duplicate of #11854417.  For
one, I do NOT update ubuntu software packages from RANDOM sources.  I
use the official repositories.  How can the entire sound support in
Ubuntu just disappear and the operating system: 1) not notice, and 2)
not recommend (or automatically install) the packages necessay to
restore it?

Internal Realtek sound chip ALC892 does seem to function in Windows 7.

ALSA doesn't seem to be installed by an Ubuntu package.

I expected linux to detect the motherboard integrated sound chip and
install drivers and software for it's use.

Some package installation action - an install or a remove - seems to
have removed sound support as a side effect.
