[Bug 993655] Re: Unity looses mouse click handler when using enabling USB headset

2012-05-04 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
I'm having the same type of issue. It seems to pop up when there is a
unity issue like when I have the auto-hide turned on for the Nav bar and
I try to switch desktops or when I tried to move a Chrome tab out of the
current window into its own window.

My mouse buttons are not usable until I log out and back on. When I
tried moving the Chrome tab, the window followed my mouse like the
button was still depressed and no combination of keyboard or mouse
buttons were able to break the 'stuckness'. When I tried to switch
desktops I got stuck seeing 4 desktops with content on each one but I
was not able to click into a desktop.

[Bug 783687] Re: package cups 1.4.6-5ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-08-22 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
I'm not able to recreate the problem I had before. I recently had some
issues with my lib32 libraries and had to reinstall the packages.

Hopefully this helps:

[Bug 784300] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-07-07 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
I found an answer. I still had apparmor installed with likewise-open
and mysql. Apparently apparmor is no longer necessary as part of
ubuntu-desktop. After uninstalling/ purging it, everything worked
great.

You can close this bug.

Martin--I meant that there was nothing in the /tmp/log file and I don't
know why.

2011-06-16 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
I was not able to get any output from the new cups.conf file.

I was, however, able to start cupsd with 'sudo cupsd' from the command
line with no errors shown.

Maybe we should change this bug to the upstart package.

[Bug 479660] [NEW] Screensaver can't handle change password in 14 days message

2009-11-09 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have my computer joined to a Microsoft domain which has a 90 day
password change policy. When my account gets within 14 days of that
password expired time, I get a Your password will expire in 14 days at
the Ubuntu terminal login (Alt-F1) and when I originally log into Ubuntu
I see a quick flash of the same message.

However, when I come back to my computer after the screensaver has
kicked in and I have set the screensaver to lock, I can't log into the
desktop until I change my password at a Windows machine. If I click on
switching users, I can log into the same desktop session by typing my
same domain\username and password at a gdm type login.

sudo and gksudo work just fine during this time.

[Bug 153776] [gutsy] xserver fails to hand off to gnome after logging into gdm

2007-10-17 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

It seems that someone else has also run into this problem.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3553500#post3553500

After upgrading Feisty to Gutsy beta, xserver would fail to hand off to gnome
after logging into gdm. To reproduce:
1. reboot machine or ctrl-alt-backspace
2. login to machine through gdm
3. see gnome mouse circle but never see the gnome loading icons

To fix it I had to:
1. /etc/init.d/gdm stop
2. startx (which started gnome without a problem)
3. Under gnome, I was instructed to touch ~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable
4. Next time I rebooted everything worked as expected

I'm also experiencing this problem on a x1300 card for a Dell PC. I am

When trying to load fglrx I get this message 'sudo modprobe fglrx'
FATAL: Error running install command for fglrx

I'm able to get my card to work with Feisty kernel version
2.6.20-15-generic. I only have this problem on 2.6.20-16-generic.

If Feisty does need a newer fglrx driver I would like to see a backport

I ran into the same problem. Update-manager should at least use
apt.conf proxy settings and then we can give users a APT-proxy gui tool.

A workaround is to run gksu gnome-network-preferences. We could add a
network preferences icon to the System -- Administration menu that
points to gksu gnome-network-preferences and label the icon as
Network Proxy (root)

[Bug 81636] GDM has no screensaver

2007-01-26 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I rebooted my computer (Edgy Eft) after work and returned the next
morning to see a burned in image from the gdm login screen.

I found a possible way to correct the behavior at http://gentoo-
wiki.com/TIP_Screensaver_in_Background

quote
GDM

OK, first thing is to set up gdm (I use 2.5.90.1, but it looks like 2.4.1.7
should work). As root, launch gdmsetup and set local login to standard greeter
with no background. Then open xscreensaver-demo, find your favourite
screensaver, hit Settings, Advanced, and note down the command line. Convert
the program to a full path - if it isn't in your path, it's probably in
/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver. Then, edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf, find the
BackgroundProgram line and set it to something like:
File: /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

BackgroundProgram=/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver/skyrocket --root

or

# BackgroundProgram=/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver/xmatrix -root -small
-delay 2

Now restart gdm

/etc/init.d/xdm restart

and watch the screensaver paint the root window behind the login box!
What other OS can do that?

Note, to make this works after you log in remove nautilus from your session so
that it wont start when you log into gnome, this will leave you with the
default grey background... but you can now run xscreensaver as a background,
along with Xearth Xplanet and Xaquarium.

[Bug 49317] Re: Dapper loads in 640x480 if Aten KVM is switched to another PC

2006-12-03 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Can you change your resolution on the fly with a ctl, alt,+ or ctl,alt,-
combination? Have you tried to choose your default resolution in the
System -- Preferences -- Screen Resolution tool? The check box that
says 'Make Default for this computer only' may fix this circumstance.

Martin Bergner is right, xorg is set up to choose among a list of
possible resolutions (i.e. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) depending on the
monitor detection during boot up. As such this is not a bug unless the
above methods do not work.

[Bug 3598] Re: mtrr allocation failed

This still happens for me. To fix it I created /etc/init.d/fix_mtrr

echo disable=1 /proc/mtrr
echo disable=2 /proc/mtrr
echo base=0x0 size=0x8000 type=write-back /proc/mtrr

size=0x8000 correlates to 2GB of main computer memory. Otherwise
cat /proc/mtrr showed 64000 MB of memory (around 64 TB of memory). Now
cat /proc/mtrr shows:

reg01: base=0xc000 (3072MB), size= 256MB: write-combining, count=4

[Bug 22373] Re: cant run fgl_glxgears

2006-11-08 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Make sure that you have the ATI driver loaded correctly. Run
'fglxinfo', if you see Mesa 3D or anything other than ATI. It should
look like this:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8)

If fglrxinfo doesn't show ATI, and you have the fglrx module loaded (
lsmod | grep fglrx ) then you may have the mtrr problem on Bug 3598
[https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/3598]. Run
'cat /proc/mtrr', if you see RAM numbers in the Terrabyte range, then

[Bug 68075] Re: Unknown ATI Video Card

2006-10-24 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
** Description changed:

I'm not sure where this bug report belongs but when I run lspci, I get
an Unknown ATI device. I believe this may be the reason why my fglrx
driver is not giving 3D acceleration. This is an ATI Radeon X1300
- series card.
+ series card purchased through Dell on an Optiplex 745.

  http://www.ati.com/products/RadeonX1300/index.html

+ The Broadcom adapter works but is also not identified.

[Bug 53387] Boot order problem

2006-07-18 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Everything seems to work correctly when I set up the network but when I
reboot and log into gdm, my networking will not work until I run
'/etc/init.d/networking restart'.

I moved over to nw-manager for the time being. I set up
/etc/network/interfaces with this type of configuration for ath0

iface ath0 auto
iface ath0 inet dhcp
wpa-driver madwifi
wpa-ssid homezone
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-psk quoted passphrase
# wpa-psk 0001231203

I didn't have time to try out the wpa-conf method but I did try wpa-psk
in passphrase and hexidecimal mode with identical results.

The only thing I can think of is trying to use pre-up commands to start
wpasupplicant before it does dhcp.

** Affects: wpasupplicant (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 49638] Can't view video after recording

2006-06-13 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: istanbul

After recording the desktop, I have 2 files, desktop-recording.ogg and
desktop-recording.ogg.tmp. The tmp file is 5.4 MB in size and the ogg
file is only 253 KB with the screen capture.

I suspect that the tmp file was supposed to be transcoded or something.
Does gstreamer0.10 conflict with the gstreamer0.8 needed for this
package?

** Affects: istanbul (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
