[Bug 1878225] Re: Please remove lxd.snap from lxd images, as it fails to seed thus failing the first boot - snapd.seeded.service waits forever (?) to have snaps seeded in LXD on s390x and arm64

2024-05-03 Thread Joel Johnston
I'm seeing snapd stall on boot of generic ubuntu:22.04 images via lxd.

root@linuxtest2:~# systemctl list-jobs
JOB UNIT TYPE  STATE
151 cloud-config.service start waiting
133 snapd.seeded.service start running
148 cloud-init.targetstart waiting
128 systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service start waiting
117 snapd.autoimport.service start waiting
1   graphical.target start waiting
150 cloud-final.service  start waiting
2   multi-user.targetstart waiting

I'm trying to get user-data scripts to run, but snapd never completes
its run.

[Bug 1944481] Re: Distrust "DST Root CA X3"

2021-09-24 Thread Joel Sing
@mattjones86 that does not seem expected - Let's Encrypt have been
issuing certificate from their R3 intermediate since December 2021
(https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/beginning-issuance-from-r3/139018)
and have been supplying two intermediates (an Let's Encrypt R3 to ISRG
Root X1 and a Let's Encrypt R3 to DST Root CA X3) in the default chain
since 4th May 2021 (https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/production-
chain-changes/150739). Given that certificates issued by Let's Encrypt
have a maximum validity period of 90 days, all certificates that are
still valid after the 4th of August would have been issued in this
manner.

The only thing I could think of that would explain the behaviour
mentioned, is if your ACME client was failing to update the certificate
chain/bundle (or your server was configured to serve and old/stale
bundle). Most browsers (including Chrome) will also automatically fetch
issuer intermediate certificates if they're not supplied by the server.

[Bug 1891169] Re: fio crashes when using --offset with a device

2021-09-23 Thread Joel Colledge
I have also observed strange behavior with the fio 3.16 package on
Focal. It occurs with the combination of "size" and "offset", and is
affected by the presence of "time_based".

For example with this command:

fio --name=test --filename=/dev/loop9 --ioengine=libaio --rw=write
--direct=1 --offset=8M --size=8M --time_based --runtime=2

I observe that the device is written from 8M to the end. I have tested
with a range of other fio versions and they all write from 8M to 16M as
expected.

It looks like the issue was introduced with
https://github.com/axboe/fio/commit/ad46c5715ffc5d4e70d2e941225b1f504f23e409
This commit was reverted in
https://github.com/axboe/fio/commit/0d0601479d593ca9e96e35f43e2c0586f8358f34
The only fio version containing the original commit but not the revert is 3.16.

I have not experienced this exact failure but it seems very likely to
have the same root cause.

[Bug 1939968] Re: Directory traversal permission not respected even with noperm

2021-08-15 Thread Joel Low
** Description changed:

  I'm trying to mount a Samba share on an Ubuntu system. Both server and
  client are Ubuntu machines. On the server, the directory shared (outer
  directory) belongs to a user different from mine, but the owner of the
  outer directory has granted everyone traverse permission (chmod 0711,
  basically) to access an inner directory, of which I have been given read
  access (using setfacl, rx permission).

  When I am running as myself locally on the server, I can access the
  inner directory. I can also do so logging in as myself from a Windows
  machine and accessing the inner directory. However, when accessing the
  inner directory via an Ubuntu client, I get permission denied even with
  `noperm` set (but expected this to succeed, exactly like the Windows
  client.)

  I have tried to distil this down into a reproduce script which can be

  I have run this script on a fresh Ubuntu 21.04 desktop install and

** Description changed:

  I'm trying to mount a Samba share on an Ubuntu system. Both server and
  client are Ubuntu machines. On the server, the directory shared (outer
  directory) belongs to a user different from mine, but the owner of the
  outer directory has granted everyone traverse permission (chmod 0711,
  basically) to access an inner directory, of which I have been given read
  access (using setfacl, rx permission).

  When I am running as myself locally on the server, I can access the
  inner directory. I can also do so logging in as myself from a Windows
  machine and accessing the inner directory. However, when accessing the
  inner directory via an Ubuntu client, I get permission denied even with
  `noperm` set (but expected this to succeed, exactly like the Windows
  client.)

[Bug 1915712] Re: [snap] configure hook fails because the gnome-3-28-1804 platform snap isn't connected

2021-02-24 Thread Joel Linn
I'm sorry but I'm afraid I can't help any further.
I needed the machine back in the office so I just removed the chromium-browser
debs (as firefox is the destined browser anyways).
The machine originally had 16.04 installed and had an upgrade to 18.04 done in
2018, maybe there was some legacy stuff it stumbled over.

[Bug 1908801] Re: Acer laptop internal keyboard & touchpad not working

2020-12-24 Thread Joel Jakubovic
** Description changed:

  A fresh install of 20.04 from the live USB doesn't see internal keyboard
  or touchpad input on my Acer Aspire E15 E5-511-POBM. After much private
  investigation to no avail
  (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1275809/ubuntu-20-04-lts-laptop-
  internal-keyboard-and-touchpad-no-longer-work), I am prepared to assert
  this as a bug. I'll restate the relevant info here, but see the link for
  a more chronological account. And I guess, for what it's worth, I would
  also assert that this is reproducible by installing 20.04 on my specific
  laptop model.

  So, I boot up the laptop. I'm presented with GRUB boot menu. At this
  point the keyboard works, and if I choose advanced options and boot into
  a root shell I can type commands and do things that way as a last
  resort. However, all the problems seem to begin right from the start of
  the graphical session, even the login screen. This, in accordance with
  the instruction of
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#At_the_login_screen, is
  why I've filed this as a bug in gdm3. As I couldn't run the graphical
  bug program in Ubuntu, I ran the CLI in the root shell and attached the
  apport file here. I've tried to follow the relevant steps, but this is
  my first bug report so apologies if something is wrong.

  I first noticed this problem a few weeks after upgrading 18.04 to 20.04.
  Yes, for the first few weeks of using 20.04, there were no problems. And
  then, one day, I booted up and the keyboard and touchpad spontaneously
  stopped working. This was mysterious because to my memory I hadn't done
  any major upgrade or change to any part of the system the previous day.

  When the system is asleep / suspended, pressing a key or the touchpad
  easily wakes it up -- after which, they refuse to work again.

  The brightness key combos (Fn+←/→) and one that turns off the screen
  (Fn+F6) do work, but others such as volume (Fn+↑/↓) do not work.

  I see all expected key output when I run `sudo libinput debug-events
  --device /dev/input/event4 --show-keycodes` and type keys.

  When I plug in an external USB keyboard and mouse, they work correctly
  while the internal keyboard and touchpad remain the same.

  Outside of those specific situations, absolutely no internal keyboard
  input -- not even Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F2 VT switching, let alone
  ordinary typing -- has any effect, and same with the touchpad.

  When I haven't had an external keyboard available I've used the on-
  screen keyboard to painstakingly run terminal commands by clicking each
  letter. However, sometimes the on-screen keyboard also stops sending
  keystrokes. The only concrete situation I can report is what I saw after
  resuming the system from sleep by opening the lid: at the login prompt
  on the lock screen, the onscreen keyboard came up, but didn't do
  anything when keys were clicked, forcing me to reboot.

  I had the following message in my `journalctl -b` logs:
  ```
  The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
  Sep 17 11:36:20 joel-Aspire-E5-511 gnome-shell[1575]: > Warning:
Unsupported maximum keycode 569, clipping.
  Sep 17 11:36:20 joel-Aspire-E5-511 gnome-shell[1575]: >   X11
cannot support keycodes above 255.
  Sep 17 11:36:20 joel-Aspire-E5-511 gnome-shell[1575]: > Internal error:
Could not resolve keysym Invalid
  Sep 17 11:36:20 joel-Aspire-E5-511 gnome-shell[1575]: Errors from xkbcomp are
not fatal to the X server
  ```
  This looks like it should have something to do with the keyboard issue. If it
doesn't, then what is its significance?

- When I investigated, I was on kernel 5.0.47. When I selected 4.15.0-112
- in the boot menu, everything was fine again; keyboard and touchpad
- working. I also found everything working fine on the install USB demo.

  Outside of those specific situations, absolutely no internal keyboard

  ordinary typing -- has any effect, and same with the touchpad.

+ When I haven't had an external keyboard available I've used the on-
+ screen keyboard to painstakingly run terminal commands by clicking each
+ letter. However, sometimes the on-screen keyboard also stops sending
+ keystrokes. The only concrete situation I can report is what I saw after
+ resuming the system from sleep by opening the lid: at the login prompt
+ on the lock screen, the onscreen keyboard came up, but didn't do

  I had the following message in my `journalctl -b` logs:

[Bug 1908801] [NEW] Acer laptop internal keyboard & touchpad not working

2020-12-19 Thread Joel Jakubovic
Public bug reported:

I had the following message in my `journalctl -b` logs:

had better things to do with my evenings. I am lost and I need someone
who knows more about this.

One person on Ask Ubuntu gave some pessimistic sympathy, describing the
issue as "just a thing we have to live with" on this particular laptop
model. This is unacceptable, and I am able and willing to spend more
time looking into this myself, if I can get just some pointers.

Thank you for your consideration.

Download links from ubuntu.com have been redirecting to HTTPS (for

Additionally, cdimage is now also available over HTTPS:

I believe this bug can now be marked as fixed.

[Bug 1766068] Re: Using Zsh, it doesn't show an error message when command not found

2020-05-31 Thread Joel Cross
Unfortunately not. @juliank seems to have gone incommunicado on this issue.
Since I have a patch that fixes this issue, would it be helpful to people if I
make a PPA containing the patched command-not-found? Then at least there will
be a solution for people until someone from Ubuntu eventually picks this up
(which realistically isn't looking likely any time soon).

[Bug 1880979] [NEW] A recent update to libruby2.7 breaks the installation of ruby2.7-dev.

2020-05-27 Thread Joel Matthys
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Affects: ruby2.7-dev (2.7.0-5ubuntu1)

Error message:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 ruby2.7-dev : Depends: libruby2.7 (= 2.7.0-5ubuntu1) but 2.7.0-5ubuntu1.1 is

Repackaging the .deb to manually change the dependency is a temporary
work-around.

[Bug 1875528] [NEW] Extra frozen / stuck mouse cursor after auto screen lock / sleep

2020-04-27 Thread Joel Lisenby
Public bug reported:

Expected:

After my computer had gone to sleep and I log in I should see only a
single active mouse cursor.

What happened instead:

After my computer had gone to sleep and I logged in I noticed a second
frozen/stuck mouse cursor was on screen and was rendered in one place
over any active application windows.

I recently upgraded to 20.04 from 19.10 but the same issue was occurring
in 19.10 as well.

Logging out completely then logging back in again removed the extra
frozen cursor.

[Bug 1841894] Re: Wayland: Image of mouse cursor left on screen after unlock

2020-04-27 Thread Joel Lisenby
Same issue happening to me, was happening on 19.10 and still continues
after upgrading to 20.04 today.

Logging out and back in again resets/hides the extra "dead" cursor, but
it appears again after locking the screen and the monitors go to sleep.

[Bug 1869758] [NEW] Repetative problem, Random connectivity

2020-03-30 Thread Joel Chosta
Public bug reported:

This is a reoccurring problem. I run debug and then go to report with attached
files and afterwards the problem temporarily clears out. It reoccurs upon
subsequent log in and restart of computer. It also clears sometimes upon
restart of system. It is a bug true to it's nature and nagging reoccurrence.
Please provide a solution or debug program to cure this ill bug. Thank You J.

[Bug 1863123] [NEW] Fail to connect bug still persists - Removal tool???

2020-02-13 Thread Joel Chosta
Public bug reported:

Any help in removing this bug that randomly mimics connection failure.
After x-Diagnose program and reporting this bug, it clears out but
always reappears later again and again. Is there a removal tool or
program that can clear it out for good? I appreciate any tips or
help that I can get. Thank you for your time in reading this report.

[Bug 1751379] Re: libreswan unconfigures vti interfaces in temporary network outage

2019-11-15 Thread Joel N. Weber II
Because Debian 10 seems to have a more robust security update policy for
the libreswan package than Ubuntu does, I've moved this functionality
from Ubuntu to Debian 10, and I believe I got a newer version of
libreswan in the process.

On Debian 10, the cron job to check birdc's output for BGP session
status and run ipsec auto --down [tunnelname], sleep 10, and ipsec auto
--up [tunnelname] when the BGP session isn't ESTABLISHED still seems to
be needed, but the default supplied leftupdown script seems to work fine
unmodified.

[Bug 1848490] Re: eoan: alsa/sof: Enable SOF_HDA link and codec

2019-10-24 Thread Joel Eidsath
Using a Lenovo x1 7th generation, I've installed 5.3.0-20 and verified
that I see

"# CONFIG_SND_SOC_SOF_NOCODEC_SUPPORT is not set"

(I don't see any of the SKYLAKE changes on the other thread.)

I've added the following blacklist lines to modprobe.d:

blacklist snd_hda_intel
blacklist snd_soc_skl

I see Input Device as "Multichannel Input - Cannon Point-LP High
Definition Audio Controller" in sound preferences, and card sof-
skl_hda_card in alsamixer. The speakers work, but the mic does not pick
anything up.

[Bug 1849340] [NEW] 'style' HTML attribute not applied

the following:

I would expect this very basic styling would be applied, and the images
(by default very large) would appear at a more readable size. However,
this is not the case.

CSS is applied as it should be)

[Bug 1849340] Re: 'style' HTML attribute not applied

2019-10-22 Thread Joel Cross
You may notice from my system details that I am running Ubuntu 18.04
from within Windows using the WSL. Part of my reasoning for wanting to
use the hv3 package as opposed to a more full-featured browser is
because I doubt the Linux versions of the full-featured browsers would
be stable in the WSL environment, and the Windows browsers are unable to
view my Linux files.

[Bug 1844562] [NEW] lxd cluster containers arbitrarily change ip address

2019-09-18 Thread Joel Johnston
Public bug reported:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Release:18.04
Codename:   bionic

lxd:
  Installed: 3.0.3-0ubuntu1~18.04.1
  Candidate: 3.0.3-0ubuntu1~18.04.1
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.3-0ubuntu1~18.04.1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.0.0-0ubuntu4 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages

Expected Behavior: A container is launched and assigned a dynamic IP
address and keeps that IP address for the life of the container

What's Happening: I'm using lxd version 3.3 on Ubuntu 18.04 in a 5 node
cluster. I have Juju deploying various workloads against this cluster. I'm
seeing containers being spun that within 10-20 minutes of instantiation
arbitrarily change their IP address. The IP addresses are dynamic IP addresses
issued by MaaS DHCP. The container is instantiated with an ID on one of the
LXD cluster members. That ID never changes. However the underlying IP address
initially handed to that container DOES. I'm looking through lxd logs on the
parent system as well as within the container and not seeing any evidence of
this change taking place.

Please let me know what diagnostic information I should provide to
support this issue.

Thank You,

Joel

[Bug 1751379] Re: libreswan unconfigures vti interfaces in temporary network outage

2019-04-09 Thread Joel N. Weber II
I've ended up with a combination of a leftupdown script which is
modified to not unconfigure the interface, plus a cron job which checks
the output of birdc show protocols all and runs ipsec auto --down
[tunnelname] then waits ten seconds and runs ipsec auto --up
[tunnelname] if bird reports a failure, which finally seems to be an
adequate workaround for achieving a reasonable approximation the desired
stability.

That cron job is relatively recent, and I have not done testing to
determine whether the cron job makes the modified leftupdown script
obsolete.

An earlier version of the cron job relied on looking at the output of
ipsec status to determine whether a tunnel was working, and in some
cases that led to the script not restarting a tunnel that needed to be
restarted.

The startup at boot order problem mentioned in this bug report has not
occurred recently.

Why is this won't fix? This is extremely annoying. There needs to be a

script to work around the GUI's obtuseness. This is exactly four clicks
in Windows. This is a pretty basic bit of system functionality to put so
many hurdles around.

[Bug 1808999] [NEW] nvidia-cuda-toolkit's /usr/lib/cuda contains empty directories

2018-12-18 Thread Joel E. Denny
Public bug reported:

/usr/lib/cuda is a monolithic cuda tree shim in the nvidia-cuda-toolkit
package according to the 8.0.61-3 entry at:

http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/n/nvidia-cuda-
toolkit/nvidia-cuda-toolkit_9.1.85-3ubuntu1/changelog

However, on my system, /usr/lib/cuda contains empty bin, include, and
lib64 subdirectories. I expected, for example, bin to contain nvcc.
Were there supposed to be symlinks, like the nvvm/libdevice
subdirectory?

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

$ apt-cache policy nvidia-cuda-toolkit

[Bug 1774213] Re: ptpd logging is broken

2018-10-25 Thread Joel Campbell
This also happens on 18.04 hosts. It makes troubleshooting PTP issues
very difficult if the statistics log is not working.

[Bug 1797662] [NEW] advpng built from an archive without a .version file

2018-10-12 Thread Joel Oliveira
Public bug reported:

```
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04
```

***

```
$ apt-cache policy advancecomp
advancecomp:
  Installed: 2.1-1
  Candidate: 2.1-1
  Version table:
 *** 2.1-1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1.20-1 500
500 http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty/main amd64 Packages
```

***

When running `advpng --version` its output does not provide the version of the
utility. Instead it reports it as "vnone". Example:

```
$ advpng --version
advancecomp vnone by Andrea Mazzoleni, http://www.advancemame.it
```

I expect it to return "v2.1-1". A la -

```
advancecomp v2.1-1 by Andrea Mazzoleni, http://www.advancemame.it
```

After some looking around it seems that maybe the wrong archive is
fetched before building it. Possibly
https://github.com/amadvance/advancecomp/archive/v2.1.tar.gz

Instead it should be
https://github.com/amadvance/advancecomp/releases/download/v2.1/advancecomp-2.1.tar.gz.
The one that was used is an archive of the git repository which does NOT
contain the `.version` file, and latter one linked is a release archive
which I think is created from repository after running all auto* tools
and running the script that generates .version file.

This is all information gleaned from the image_optim project where there
is more information in an issue there:
https://github.com/toy/image_optim/issues/165#issuecomment-429489170

Much thanks to Ivan Kuchin and Kasper Grubbe over there helping track
this down.

[Bug 1793753] Re: kernel panic - null pointer dereference on ipset operations

2018-10-08 Thread Joel Sing
I've tested the proposed kernel under the previous test environment -
after two hours the host was still up, where as it would have previously
crashed within 30 minutes or so. As such, this appears to prevent the
panic.
