[Bug 507504] Re: display freezes, [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2011-10-19 Thread Joseph Coffland
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477256 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477256

This is not a duplicate of #477256. That bug is about the i855 driver
and does not mention the i915 driver or the
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU
hung syslog entry.

This is the exact message I see in the syslog:

Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180132] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed]
*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180146] render error detected, EIR:

Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180172] [drm:i915_do_wait_request]
*ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 14505009 at 14505008)

After this the GPU does not work. I can restart X but only get a blank
screen with a mouse on it.

Anyone find any workarounds for this? One might be to use the vesa
driver but that is less than ideal.

[Bug 776818] Re: [MIR] vde2

2011-10-03 Thread Joseph Coffland
@Michael Terry I reported this against vde2 over a year ago. Then I was
told I needed to file a MIR.

The bug report you are suggesting already exists: bug 253230. Here's a
line from that report, It's been open for years and lead to nothing.

  1) There is clearly demand for vde2 support in KVM.
  2) It's fairly simple to add.
  3) Nearly all the work is already done.
  4) It's sat around for years with no action.

I know how hard it is to manage a public bug tracker. I've got first
hand experience. I can only imagine how difficult it is to do so for an
entire Linux distribution. So I feel your pain. But how can we make
this happen? How much noise do I need to make to get some oil?

2011-10-03 Thread Joseph Coffland
@Michael Terry I guess I should have linked to the original bug in the

a little to get things rolling.

Hopefully security won't be an issue. The Debian guys are pretty good
about this stuff and it passed there approval. But of course a proper
check is in order. Anything I can do to help here?

[Bug 776818] Re: [MIR] vde2

2011-09-28 Thread Joseph Coffland
I'm still waiting for this as well. No one seems to want to do it.

Should be easy since it's already been a Debian package for several
years. Just needs to be included in main and added as a build dep of
kvm. No other configuration required as far as I know.

Regarding kees concern about adding a daemon in main, vde_switch is very
quite. It uses very little memory and almost no CPU. I haven't had any
problems running it for months. Much better behaved than other daemons
already in main like pulseaudio.

I've been rebuilding the kvm package from source. Works fine and
automatically configures vde support as long as the vde2 package is
installed before the kvm package is built.

I carefully read the requirements for MIR and followed directions. I
would be nice to know that if you RTFM your voice will be heard. Nudge
nudge.

[Bug 568507] Re: Drop-down menus allow infinite scroll

2011-09-20 Thread Joseph Coffland
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 388633 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/388633

This is not a duplicate. Bug 388633 talks about extra whitespace in the
Gtk combo box. This bug is about the ability to scroll down infinitely
past the end of the combo box items. If you scroll down a long way then
you have to scroll back just as far to see the list of items again.

This bug occurs only when either the list is so long or the window is
positioned near a screen edge so that both ends of the list are not
visible at once when the combo is opened. You can then scroll either up
or down (depending on which end is hidden) indefinitely past the end of
the combo list. However, if you scroll to the other end (i.e. the end
that was not visible when the combo opened) the problem goes away until
you reopen the combo.

This is not a major issue but it affects a huge number of applications
and makes Gtk appear broken. It is much more apparent for large combo
box lists.

[Bug 776818] Re: [MIR] vde2

2011-06-13 Thread Joseph Coffland
vde2 makes it possible to create a virtual network for your VMs. This
is an important tool for cloud computing. If Ubuntu wants to compete as
a cloud computing solution this is a critical piece to the puzzle.

It shouldn't be much work to move vde2 into main. The package is well
supported and tested. The KVM package will automatically build with
vde2 support if it is added as a build dependency which can't happen
until vde2 is brought in to main. The ultimate goal is to have vde2
support in KVM.

[Bug 777606] Re: Panel turns black when maximizing terminal

2011-05-11 Thread Joseph Coffland
I have this same problem in 11.04 Ubuntu using gnome with the xfce-
terminal. I also have a number of other related screen problems when
xfce-terminal is on the screen.

  1) Resizing the terminal draws a black box on the top of the screen.
  2) Changing themes causes xfce-terminal to redraw and create a black box at
the top of the screen and/or screen garbage.
  3) gnome-panel, when not in autohide, goes black when xfce-terminal is
maximized.

All of these are related to redrawing the xfce-terminal in 11.04.

I'm also using the Nvidia driver.

I think this is a xfce-terminal bug not a panel bug.

[Bug 780652] [NEW] Popup menus show on the 1st X server display for some applets on the 2nd display in 11.04

2011-05-10 Thread Joseph Coffland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This bug is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+bug/774427 which was recently fixed.

Right clicking on certain applets in the second display causes the popup
menu to show up on the first display. It is important to note that this
occurs on configurations with multiple X-servers not with Twin-View. It
happens with at least the following applets:

  Window List
  Window Selector
  Workspace Switcher

And possibly the clock applet as well.

I already tested the following patch but it did not help:

[Bug 776650] [NEW] Build qemu-kvm with native VDE support

2011-05-03 Thread Joseph Coffland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

It would be convenient to build qemu-kvm with VDE support. There is a
wrapper 'vdekvm' that comes with vde2 but VDE is better supported
directly in KVM. I believe it is simply a matter of adding 'libvde-dev'
as a build dep for the package.

[Bug 774427] Re: Cannot add applets to second X server display in 11.04

2011-05-03 Thread Joseph Coffland
@Ofer Chen, sorry that patch didn't work either. I'm building the
Ubuntu 11.04 version of gnome-panel which already contained an exact
copy of the function panel_context_menu_check_for_screen(), only further
down in the file. I had to delete one copy of the function to get it to
compile. There was no noticeable change in behavior.

I checked and found that panel_context_menu_check_for_screen() was
already in the original gnome-panel-2.32.1 source at gnome-panel/panel-
context-menu.c:61. The calls added by your patch were new.

[Bug 776818] [NEW] [MIR] vde2

2011-05-03 Thread Joseph Coffland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vde2

I've check the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess
requirements. I believe vde2 meets all of these. It is also already in
Debian sid http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/vde2.

Including vde2 in main would allow KVM to build dep libvde-dev and to
build with native VDE support by default. This would be very beneficial
for those of us using VDE for virtual networking of VMs in Ubuntu.

Currently I am rebuilding the KVM source package with libvde-dev
installed and VDE support is enabled automatically.

Anyone know how to view any gnome-panel applet error logs other than the
fairly uninformative pop-up error?

[Bug 774427] [NEW] Cannot add applets to second X server display in 11.04

2011-04-30 Thread Joseph Coffland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Adding any applet on the second screen of a dual X server configuration
yields the following error:

  Applet Name has quit unexpectedly
If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the
panel.

Applets work fine on the first display. Adding applets on the second
display worked fine in 10.10 and earlier.

I have a single dual-head Nvidia card which is configured for dual X
servers. I.e. not TwinView. TwinView does not work well with my
monitors.

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Correction, this seems to occur only for certain applets. Specifically
I'm having trouble with the following:

  Window List
  Window Selector
  Workspace Switcher

Perhaps it is only applets that deal with windows on the second display.

[Bug 421048] Re: Black dots appear on screen

2011-04-29 Thread Joseph Coffland
Thank you for the concerned response. I have a good idea of what it's
like to be on your end because I am on other projects. I don't mean to
be a whiner.

I had a number of bugs related to an Nvidia card and multiple displays
stemming back to Hardy. Most of the reports I filed or was involved
with were eventually closed with out really being resolved as Ubuntu
versions progressed. I guess in this case the main issue was probably a
faulty Nvidia card/driver pair. The issues went away when I abandoned a
particular machine with on board Nvidia. I should probably be yelling
at Nivida for not owning up to and fixing the problems. I have an
expensive laptop now paperweight due to these problems. I guess it's a
bit of a sore spot for me.

Keep up the great work. Ubuntu is getting better and more reliable all
the time.

[Bug 421048] Re: Black dots appear on screen

2011-04-28 Thread Joseph Coffland
It is discouraging that the policy for many bugs is to simply wait until
a newer version comes along so they can be downgraded and then closed
with out any real investigation. I understand that developer resources
are limited but shouldn't the bug remain 'Confirmed' until proven
otherwise? This bug has been downgraded to 'Incomplete' with no
evidence that the bug has been fixed other than a lack of recent
reports.

I think the process should be to first ask if the bug still occurs.
Then if there are no updates for some time or people can confirm that
the bug no longer exists in the newer version then the status can be
changed. Otherwise, it puts too much burden on the bug reporters to
fight for a bug's status only to be repeatedly smacked down.
Particularly the original reporter should have a chance to comment
before the status is changed.

--- End rant ---

I haven't seen this bug in awhile because I stopped using the machine it
occurred on. I believe it is related to faulty Nvidia hardware and/or
drivers.
