[Bug 1901894] Re: One or more monitors turns off but system usable until monitor orientation change

2020-12-23 Thread Julius Thor
Kai-Heng, yes the root was ZFS, but it's not anymore. I have reinstalled
using btrfs on root and the latest kernel (5.10). The lockups have
stopped occurring.

[Bug 1901894] Re: One or more monitors turns off but system usable until monitor orientation change

2020-11-05 Thread Julius Thor
Installed the latest mainline kernel but the system doesn't boot.
Initramfs complaines that zfs module is not loaded. Still works for the
LTS kernels.

[Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking

2017-05-05 Thread Julius Thor
This bug is still in 16.04.

I seem to be able to work around this issue by closing the display while
in the bug. Let the display orientation update so only the external
monitor(s) is turned on, then undock the computer and finally open the
display and close it again.

But undocking the computer with the display open and then trying to make
the computer sleep will always make it lockup so that the cursor is the
only thing that's responsive.

[Bug 1675086] Re: Kernel Bug when using nfsroot + overlayroot at the same time

2017-03-22 Thread Julius F.
** Description changed:

  Hi,

this affects version signature Ubuntu 4.4.0-21.37-generic 4.4.6 (as
- reported by initramfs)
+ reported by initramfs), ARCH: amd64

I have installed ubuntu 16.04 via debootstrap in a chroot environment. I
can PXE boot this environment via NFS using the following Kernel
  parameters without a problem:

  root=/dev/nfs  initrd=initrd.gz nfsroot=10.23.23.1:/mnt/lab ip=dhcp ro

  (initramfs generated with 'mkinitramfs -v -o ~/initrd.img
4.4.0-21-generic'. I can attach the whole initramfs.conf, if desired)

As soon as I enable overlayroot (using tmpfs as overlay target), the
  machine hangs at boot.

In order to debug this issue, I have appended the

  break=init

  kernel parameter.

In busybox I can then see that the overlay is mounted. However, if I try to
chroot into it, I get a stacktrace (see attached screenshot).
The overlay seems to be readable, but not writeable.

('touch file' works, but there is nothing there afterwards)

[Bug 1675086] [NEW] Kernel Bug when using nfsroot + overlayroot at the same time

2017-03-22 Thread Julius F.
Public bug reported:

Hi,

this affects version signature Ubuntu 4.4.0-21.37-generic 4.4.6 (as
reported by initramfs), ARCH: amd64

I have installed ubuntu 16.04 via debootstrap in a chroot environment. I
can PXE boot this environment via NFS using the following Kernel
parameters without a problem:

root=/dev/nfs  initrd=initrd.gz nfsroot=10.23.23.1:/mnt/lab ip=dhcp ro

(initramfs generated with 'mkinitramfs -v -o ~/initrd.img
4.4.0-21-generic'. I can attach the whole initramfs.conf, if desired)

As soon as I enable overlayroot (using tmpfs as overlay target), the
machine hangs at boot.

In order to debug this issue, I have appended the

break=init

kernel parameter.

In busybox I can then see that the overlay is mounted. However, if I try to
chroot into it, I get a stacktrace (see attached screenshot).
The overlay seems to be readable, but not writeable.

('touch file' works, but there is nothing there afterwards)

`apport-collect` is not available in initramfs, therefore no log could
be attached.

[Bug 1629613] Re: [Dell XPS 13] SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad not recognized after upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04

2017-01-09 Thread Julius Seporaitis
With a little spare time I've been checking what happens in logs while I
run `evtest` as per above instruction: `/var/log/dmesg` and
`/var/log/Xorg.0.log` - as grepping showed they both reference "SynPS/2
Synaptics TouchPad".

dmesg log was not updating after boot, but I noticed something in
Xorg.0.log, which I attach below. Here's the breakdown of the final few
lines, that happened while I was checking `less /proc/bus/input/devices`
and `evtest`. So here it is:

First of ALT+CTRL+F2, as I switch to virtual terminal, I get this:

[47.820] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

I assume nothing unusual and proceed to run `less
/proc/bus/input/devices` - observe the device `event5` in the list, that
is the TouchPad (as per above comment).

I run `sudo evtest /dev/input/event5` and start swiping and clicking the
touchpad - nothing yet happens. After a little bit - curiosity kills and
ALT+CTRL+F7 - I go check the terminal app that's tailing log files. I
notice this:

[86.672] (II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
[86.672] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0,
position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
[86.744] (--) synaptics: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: touchpad found
[92.560] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

Switch back to virtual terminal where `evtest` is still running - I
continue swiping and clicking touchpad. No events come through. One more
come back to X:

[ 106.959] (II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
[ 106.959] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0,
position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
[ 107.028] (--) synaptics: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: touchpad found
[ 113.552] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

And back - still no events. I continue the procedure of clicking,
touching and swiping. Eventually - the events start coming in. I CTRL+C
`evtest`, log out from VT and come back to X:

[ 174.700] (II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch
[ 174.700] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0,
position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
[ 174.760] (--) synaptics: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: touchpad found

The touchpad sure works and I can move the pointer.

Any advice/ideas where to look next - welcome & could look at it next
time I have spare time.

[Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking

2016-12-28 Thread Julius Thor
I also notice that the display changes are not detected properly. When I
undock, there is no change in display orientation and I can still move
the mouse over to the other screen which is not there (missing limb,
still felt). When I run Displays ("unity-control-center display"), the
screen flickers and the displays get rearranged but are still detected
as if they are still connected.

Christofer, I'll create a new bug report as soon as I get clarification
regarding my previous question.

2016-12-25 Thread Julius Thor
I have the same laptop and am experiencing the same bug. I have tried
upgrading to 4.8.0-30-generic but that does not fix the problem for me.
I did try and turn off all monitors except the laptop monitor before
undocking and that allowed me to put the laptop to sleep. I could not
wake it up, though.

[Bug 1629613] Re: [Dell XPS 13] SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad not recognized after upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04

2016-12-18 Thread Julius Seporaitis
Updating BIOS managed to improve the situation to the point where I can
consistently make the touchpad work, although it is inconvenient.

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition (9333)
OS: 16.04 LTS - updated from 14.04 LTS - updated from 12.04 LTS, which was the
original OS and had touchpad working.

Here's how I "made" it work.

1. Updated BIOS from A02 to A08 (latest for my model) - as per Dell's
instructions[0].
2. After reboot, `xinput` output finally had "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad", BUT
it was still not responsive.
3. `sudo apt-get install evtest` (required for step #4).
4. Following the "Debugging Touchpad Detection"[1] I switch to VT (CTRL+ALT+F2)
5. Run `cat /proc/bus/input/devices` I find the touchpad name is `event5`.
6. Run `sudo evtest /dev/input/event5 > event` and do various gestures on the
touchpad, then CTRL+C.
7. Switch back to X (CTLR+ALT+F7) - turns out the touchpad is now working.

After rebooting touchpad is non-responsive, but if I repeat steps 6 & 7
- it starts working again. I'm not sure if this is reproducible on other
models, but I hope this is helpful for further debugging.

It seems this issue is related to SCIM which is started by Chromium
(when it's not started yet?). Removing all the SCIM related packages
solved the issue.

I suspect this bug is still present for people that need to use SCIM.

[Bug 1579534] [NEW] Chromium process doesn't close when closing the last window

2016-05-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

This is how the problem shows:
1. I start up Chromium
2. I close its window
3. I start it again, Chromium complains it can't open its profile

When I run Chromium from a terminal, I see that it doesn't close after I
close its window. I have to do an explicit ctrl+c in the terminal (or
kill the processes) before I can start Chromium again without having a
'profile in use' warning.

There are *no* extensions installed. The check box to stay active if any
background app would be enabled is turned *off* as well.

Terminal output:

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
More information, it's possible to load the module with these instructions:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/705878/can-i-fix-my-corrupted-lubuntu-splash-screen-having-disabled-the-graphical-term

Looking at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf there is this comment:
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.

So it seems that the reason this module does not load automatically is
intentional.

Now that the X.org driver for this chip has been removed and it relies
completely on the framebuffer module, maybe it would make sense to look
into slightly better support for the framebuffer modules?

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this problem on Ubuntu 15.10. Note that this version does
not contain the xserver-xorg-video-sis anymore, but it does contain the
sisfb module.

Now the vesafb driver is loaded now, but it does not seem to be a
module. I tried to use the instructions from this thread to load sisfb
instead plus updating the initramfs files, but it didn't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1423381

I think that the in-kernel vesafb prevents sisfb from loading or it's
not properly added to the initramfs.

Should I reopen this bug or create a new one?

[Bug 1357961] Re: Missing home config for anachron and root

2014-08-17 Thread Julius Beckmann
There is no dialog at all. Config has always been at
`/root/.config/backintime`.

I had some thins changed on my system that i changed back:
- Disabled non-password sudo for my user, tried again with no difference.
- Recreated the umodified udev and anacron files.

The issue i reported seem to be handmade by myself trying to recreate the
anacron flow.
My current working fix for my issue is a sleep 10; in the anacron file,
because my external 3.5 is quite slow and needs some time to start and mount.

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-08-16 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Also solved the problem here!

Using 'aplay -l' seems like a rather strange hack to detect a software
modem. I think either the Python ALSA bindings or /proc/asound/cards for
that instead only. Right now 'aplay -l' apparently is only called when
no modem is found through /proc/asound/cards as a fallback.

Martin Pitt, is there any specific reason for this fallback behavior?
Should it be reimplemented using Python's ALSA bindings or maybe could
be gotten rid off completely?

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-06-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Yes, it only seems to happen with KDE. I also found that Pulseaudio
installs one extra start-up script for KDE only in /etc/xdg/autostart.
The man pages of these scripts both mention they will use an already
running Pulseaudio.

I think the proper solution is either:
- run Pulseaudio *once* and never again (when logging in)
- fix Pulseaudio's self-detection so that it works when the first instance is
still initializing

As for running Pulseaudio as a specific user, I wonder what would happen
when multiple users are logging onto a system at the same time. Would
this not create a similar conflict with each user's Pulseaudio trying to
use the ALSA devices at the same time?

[Bug 1295323] Re: Can't stop/remove baloo

2014-06-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I've disabled baloo here, but I still have a .local/share/baloo/ which
takes up 14GB (out of 240GB total). It's strange that Dolphin (also
containing Konqueror's filemanaging kparts) is depending on baloo.

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-06-25 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
At the end here at least, the pid file points to the lowest PID. Could I
check it during the start-up phase as well? Could it be possible the 2nd
instance is already loading before the 1st has a chance to write its pid
file?

Does it make sense that Pulseaudio's respawn option should be turned on,
while it is also explicitly loaded by the log-on scripts? I would say
either it either uses or respawn or it's loaded already when logging in.

[Bug 1325282] Re: USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-06-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems that on Kubuntu Trusty, by default two pulseaudios are running:
$ ps aux|grep pulse
julius3414 1.1 0.1 588164 7056 ?Sl 19:38 0:56
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
julius3969 0.0 0.1 502228 5520 ?Sl 19:41 0:00
/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

The log-in process start pulseaudio 2 times and the presence detection
appears to be broken.

[Bug 1325282] Re: USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-06-12 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I just tried plugging in my second USB device and only the playback
device was recognized, the microphone was not. Here is the output:

$ fuser -v /dev/snd/*
 GEBRUIKER PID SOORT PROGRAMMA
/dev/snd/controlC0: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC2: julius 3304 F pulseaudio
 julius 4056 F pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D3p: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0c: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC1D0p: julius 3304 F...m pulseaudio

The new device is on /dev/snd/pcmC2* so it doesn't seem to be used by something
else. I'm a bit surprised there are two pulseaudios with different PIDs active
though. Could that be a problem?
I'm in a phone call (pcmC1) and playing music over HDMI (pcmC0D3), so it's
correct it's using those devices. When I do a reboot, it seems the device is
always recognized properly. It's just hot-plugging which doesn't tend to work
correctly.

[Bug 1325282] [NEW] USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-05-31 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When I connect an audio device using USB, I can only use it to play back
stereo sound. Anything else is not detected. I tried it with two
different devices and they both give me the same result. Neither in KDE
nor in Google Hangouts, I can use my microphone. It does not show up as
a selectable input device anywhere.

ALSA does seem to correctly detect that these USB devices have a
microphone.

The microphone of my internal audio does work.

[Bug 756317] Re: Captive portals may corrupt apt translation indices

2014-03-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
With the current situation, you do not even have to actively use APT behind
such a portal for the bug to be triggered.
When my main internet connection was working with such a portal, APT just
stopped working seemingly randomly because there apparently is some kind of
auto fetch daemon running by default on Ubuntu. I had to delete the contents of
that directory very regularly, because APT often wasn't working when I needed
it. Of course I would only use APT myself once I verified that my connection
was working properly.

And I'm sad to say it, but it seems such portals are very popular in
this part of the world :(

If this is not going to be fixed for Trusty, at least add a note to the
release notes which explains how to disable this automatic fetching of
package lists. That would significantly reduce the problem for many
people.

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux

2013-12-13 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
With Ubuntu 13.10 it has become a mess. I tried to install it 4 times on
my notebook now. It would go through the complete installation process
and only at the end suddenly the kernel failed to install. I thought I
may have connectivity problems at first. Only after manually doing a
dpkg -i on the kernel deb through a root shell, I saw the error message
about non-PAE.

I hope at least some warning can be added about this, because it's
stupid to go through the whole process and discover at the end it's not
going to work.

directory. Its the last digit of dir permissions that is used. You can see that
if you run samba with debug level.
But the best way is to use the smb.config edits from above the you can share
folders in /home and external ext4 drive like i do.

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2013-05-17 Thread julius von kohout
Via nautilus is usershare. Via smb.conf is root share. Try to set permissions
of home to 755 and make a share /home/public
If you make a public share samba uses nobody/other as user to change to that
directory. Its the last digit of dir permissions that is used. You can see that
if you run samba with debug level.

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2013-05-16 Thread julius von kohout
are you referring to root share or usershare? root shares work properly
and they are meant to be done by fiddling with smb.conf

user share via nautilus does not work properly

private shares with password (its automatically your login password)
work.

public (guest) shares in the home directory dont work because samba
cannot cd into /home because /home defaul permissons are to strict for
nobody which is the guest/public samba user.

i had a long talk with the maintainer of nautilus-share. there are
several possible fixes.

1. set homedirectoy permissons for eveyone else properly
2. add force user = owner of the /home/'your username' directoy to smb.con and
map to guest = bad password
