[Bug 527267] Re: Application Indicators too wide
I played around a bit with some theme settings. Ted is actually right as the indicator-application uses a theme setting to generate the spacing around the icons. If you put or change the following line in the default style in your theme's gtkrc the gap between the icons in the panel should disappear (make sure that it is nor overwritten by another style later): GtkMenuItem::horizontal-padding = 0 However, this setting also affects the menu which looks quite ugly afterwards (no spacing between menu items). To avoid this you can put the following line in the style which is assigned to GtkMenuItem: xthickness = 5 I think this value should be increased by the same amount as horizontal- padding was reduced. -- Application Indicators too wide https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527267 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 377484] [NEW] [Jaunty] Power saving mode for Intel iwl4965 does not work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic Hi, After apgrading my Thinkpad T61 to Jaunty the idle power consumption increased by nearly 1 watt because of the Intel WiFi adapter 4965AGN (iwl4965). In Intrepid the adapter could be switched to power saving mode with the following command: k...@t61:~$ bash -c echo 5 /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwlagn/*/power_level After this command the idle power consumption with lowest display brightness was 12.5 watt (1400x1050 nvidia graphic). Turning wireless lan off did not further improve power consumption. Unfortunately, changing the power level does not work in Jaunty. Although the above command initially changes the power level to 5 and reduces power consumption... k...@t61:~$ sudo cat /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwlagn/\:03\:00.0/power_level SYSTEM:auto MODE:fixed INDEX:5 ... it switches back to level 0 shortly afterwards and power consumption increases by about 1 watt: k...@t61:~$ sudo cat /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwlagn/\:03\:00.0/power_level SYSTEM:auto MODE:fixed INDEX:0 Apparently, the kernel now controls the power saving mode and overwrites any changes made by the user. However, I never noticed any difference in performance between power_level 5 and 0 as I use WiFi to connect to a 1.5 Mbps ADSL which is slow anyway. It would clearly be beneficial for this setting to have the option to choose the power level permanently. [Bug 12040] Re: Gnome menu is slow when clicking for the first time
After installing the package 'xautomation' I used the following command in session startup: xte 'mousemove 10 1040' 'mouseclick 1' 'usleep 10' 'mouseclick 1' 'mousemove 700 525' This simulates two mouseclicks over the menu icon (open and close) with a short delay (0.1s) in between and moves the mouse back to the centre of the screen. If you have a smaller screen than 1400x1050 you will have to adjust the coordinates. Since I put this in session startup the menu opens without delay as it has already been opened at startup. [Bug 311352] Re: Thinkpad with Seagate 7200.3 crashes after head parking due to movement
I just found the following document specifying how the hard disk should react to a freefall event: http://www.t13.org/Documents/UploadedDocuments/docs2006/e06144r2-Freefall_Control_Feature_Set_CB.pdf It states that the drive should try to complete the command after the freefall event but send an error message if it is not able to complete the command before its timeout. As the described problem usually occurs after several freefall events it is quite likely that the kernel does not properly react to this reported error message. However, I do not know how an UNC (uncorrectable error) reported by the disk would look like in the libata error messages. Maybe someone with more knowledge in this area could follow this up? Furthermore, it is very unlikely that the reported problem is due to a hardware failure as I could not provoke it in Microsoft Vista. The above mentioned document also gives the codes that have to be send to the disk to turn the freefall protection off. This would at least provide a temporal workaround. Does anybody know how I can send a SET FEATURE command with Feature Code C1h to the drive? Many thanks and best wishes! [Bug 311352] [NEW] Thinkpad with Seagate 7200.3 crashes after head parking due to movement
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic Hi, Since I upgraded the hard disk of my Thinkpad T61 to a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 the system crashes intermittently. This occurs when the G-protection of the Seagate hard disk parks the heads because of movement and the hard disk is accessed at the same time. Usually, it can be reproduced by moving the computer (I can hear the heads then parking several times) and for example searching through the bookmark menu in Firefox. The menu then freezes, usually I can initially switch to a different program, then only mouse movements are possible. If I switch to a text console and try to log in this is not completed and after a time the following error messages appear (I catched the messages with a digital camera as they cannot be saved because of the hard disk malfunction): ata1.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x3 SErr 0x5 action 0xe frozen ata1: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake } ata1.00: cmd ... res ... ata1.00 status { DRDY } ata1.00: cmd ... res ... ata1.00 status { DRDY } ata1.00 revalidation failed (errno=-5) and later: Buffer I/O error on device sda8, logical block ... EXT3-fs error (device sda6): ext3_find_entry: reading directory ... Please find the screenshots attached. The only way to get out of this is to hold down the power button for several seconds until the system turns off. The Magic-SysRq key does not work. I suspect that the kernel has a problem with the delay that occurs while the heads are parked. Is there any way to increase this timeout? I would be very happy if somebody could help solving the problem. Many thanks in advance! Maybe that is the reason why you never experienced this fault. I have tried to reproduce the problem quite often to find out what the reason is. Therefore, I have got quite a high number of these events. I do not know whether the other attributes (like seek errors) are related to this. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source Hi, I would like to report a problem that occurred after upgrading the hard disk of my Thinkpad T61 to a Seagate Momentus 7200.3. Although the system suspends without problems it needs quite long for resuming. The message COMRESET failed is displayed after several seconds of inactivity. Thereafter, resuming continues normally. Dmesg displays the following error message: kernel: [3.647374] ata3: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0x80). Resuming in Windows Vista works fine without delay. The problem does also not occur in Ubuntu when the SATA controller is set to Compatibility Mode (BIOS). I had a similar problem some time ago with the old hard disk when resuming with activated SATA power management, However, the current problem also occurs when SATA power management is disabled. I suspect that the hard drive might not be properly recognized by the kernel as dmesg shows only SATA I speed (1.5 GB/s) although to my knowledge both T61 and the Seagate hard disk should support SATA II. [Bug 211572] Re: [Hardy] [regresion] resume from suspend (to ram) is not working with kernel 2.6.24-13 and 2.6.24-14
@Fabian Neumann Thank you very much for the information. I just found out that resume is working fine when nothing is connected to the usb ports. However, if I connect my hub with mouse, keyboard and dvd burner to the usb port resume does not work anymore. Even with these devices connected resume was working fine in 2.6.24-12. Unfortunately, kernel version 2.6.24-15 does not solve the other bug mentioned above displaying sometimes a white screen instead of the password dialog after resuming. I am wondering whether this bug is related to the nvidia driver or to X. Do you have a NVIDIA card too? -- [Hardy] [regresion] resume from suspend (to ram) is not working with kernel 2.6.24-13 and 2.6.24-14 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211572 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211572] Re: [Hardy] [regresion] resume from suspend (to ram) is not working with kernel 2.6.24-13 and 2.6.24-14
I think that the bug reported initially in this thread is caused by the ehci_hcd module. The other bug that I mentioned seams to be different from the one mentioned by Fabian Neumann. I do not see a black screen after resume but a white screen where the mouse pointer is correctly displayed and can be moved. However, the screen is otherwise completely white and no password dialog is displayed. I can then enter the password blindly and after that the desktop is shown correctly. As the mouse pointer is shown correctly on the white screen I am not sure that this bug is related to the nvidia driver. Perhaps there is a problem with the initialization of X. -- [Hardy] [regresion] resume from suspend (to ram) is not working with kernel 2.6.24-13 and 2.6.24-14 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211572 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 192407] Re: Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend
With a fresh installation of Ubuntu Hardy Beta 64bit the above mentioned problem does not occur anymore. Therefore, I conclude that this problem is restricted to the 32bit version. However, there are other minor problems with suspending in the 64bit version: After resuming mostly a white screen is displayed instead of the password prompt. However, after entering the password the desktop is correctly displayed. Only sometimes a white area in the lower right corner of the screen remains even after suspending again. The mouse pointer is shown in this area but clicking on the area where the panel applets are usually located does not cause any reaction. After restarting X everything is fine. -- Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203494] Re: gnome-power-manager does not restore brightness after idle dim (2.22.0-0ubuntu1)
I can confirm this bug on a Thinkpad T61 8889-2BG with Nvidia NVS 140 running Hardy Beta 64bit. The screen dims most of the time correctly when idle. However, brightness is not restored after movements of the mouse or pressing a key though it can be restored manually. [Bug 192407] Re: Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend
The bug persists using the latest kernel for hardy (2.6.24-11) and the proprietary nvidia driver (169.12) installed by envy. Using the hardy kernel the mentioned error messages regarding ncq disappeared. However, despite these messages the harddisk works flawlessly in 2.6.22. Anyway, I will replace the harddisk with a Hitachi 7K200 200 GB as soon as the encrypted version is available in Germany. [Bug 192407] Re: Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend
I have tried to narrow down the problem further. This is quite time consuming as sometimes the crash does not occur in 20 suspend and resume cycles and next time it crashes after the second try. Anyway, resume works reliably when booting with init=/bin/bash. It also works reliably if I switch to a text console and kill gdm leaving the nvidia module loaded. However, using both methods the screen stays black after resuming but the keyboard works. There were also no crashes so far using the vesa driver instead of the proprietary NVIDIA driver. I tried all combinations of the options in the acpi-support file but it did not work reliably with the proprietary NVIDIA driver. The kernel parameter acpi_sleep=s3_mode did not help too. Nevertheless, the problem seams to be caused by the proprietary NVIDIA driver or the interaction of the kernel and this driver. Is there any way to remove this driver before suspending? Using the vesa driver is not a real alternative as it does not provide 3D acceleration and consumes much more energy from battery. -- Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 192407] [NEW] Thinkpad T61 crashes on resume from suspend
Public bug reported: Hello, I would like to report a bug that sometimes (in about 10% of cases) inhibits wakeup from suspend of my Thinkpad T61 8889-2BG. I am using Ubuntu 7.10. This bug occurs with the standard kernel as well as with a self compiled vanilla kernel (2.6.24.2) patched with thinkpad-acpi. There is another bug while waking up from suspend in the standard kernel (notebook needs several key presses and trackpoint as well as trackpad movements to wake up) but this bug seems to be solved in 2.6.24.2. Therefore, I am only reporting the bug that persists in 2.6.24.2: The notebook suspends without any problems at all times. However, sometimes (about 10% of cases) after opening the lid or pressing the power button when the notebook is suspended, the moon stays lit, the battery LED and the power LED are turned on, the harddisk starts to spin, but then nothing else happens. The screen stays dark and there is no harddisk activity. Then, I have to power off the notebook and restart. The recommended DebuggingKernelSuspend method produces the following messages in dmesg: [1.864000] Using IPI No-Shortcut mode [1.864000] Magic number: 0:35:998 [1.864000] hash matches /build/buildd/linux-source-2.6.22-2.6.22/drivers/base/power/resume.c:57 [1.864000] hash matches device ttyae [1.868000] hash matches device 00:00 [1.868000] Freeing unused kernel memory: 364k freed With kernel version 2.6.24.2 the messages are as follows: [ 28.217234] Using IPI No-Shortcut mode [ 28.217367] Magic number: 0:865:403 [ 28.217368] hash matches drivers/base/power/main.c:97 [ 28.217599] Freeing unused kernel memory: 340k freed As the unreliability of suspending renders this feature completely useless I would be very grateful if someone could help me to solve the problem. Please let me know if you need any further information. Many thanks in advance!
