[Bug 531556] Re: [Lucid] Blank Screen after login

2010-03-09 Thread Katsudon
In my case details are slightly different:
the screen is blank with a white mouse cursor and a text cursor in the
upper-left corner, pressing any button causes some text to be written on the
screen (but also buttons such as Alt produce some output)
Pressing Ctrl-Alt-7 opens the login console.
The first login always fails (it does not say "login failed", it simply returns
to login screen).
The second login succeeds.

[Bug 533716] Re: [Lucid] GRUB complains error: file not found

2010-03-09 Thread Katsudon
Another attempt. Again, I installed Lucid Alpha 3 (alternate), this time
with an access to the internet during the install in order to pull the
updated packages.

This time, when computer boots, it greets me with the following error.

symbol 'grub_puts' not found

[Bug 533716] Re: [Lucid] GRUB complains error: file not found

2010-03-09 Thread Katsudon
The contents of the /boot partition:

ubu...@ubuntu:/mnt/grub$ ls -al
total 6
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 2010-03-07 19:48 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 1024 2010-03-07 10:40 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 30 2010-03-07 10:40 device.map
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 2496 2010-03-07 19:48 grub.cfg

shows that a lot of files used by grub are missing, in particular core.img.
Therefore it seems that the source of the problem is the installer which failed
to copy them.

[Bug 414716] Re: [Karmic] After shutdown from CLI system reboots into recovery menue instead of shutting down

2010-01-09 Thread Katsudon
If after "sudo shutdown now", the "rescue menu" shows up, the output of
"cat /var/log/messages | grep bonobo" is empty (I checked that twice).

After one "sudo shutdown now" the outcome was different: all text
consoles were locked and the graphical console shut down. The machine
had to be turned down by "Ctrl-Alt-Del". After this reboot the outcome
was:

[Bug 425411] Re: Computer suspends immediately after resuming if power is unplugged while suspended

2009-11-30 Thread Katsudon
The original bug report concerned the problem related to resuming if
power unplugged while suspended and if I understand, it is still an
issue for some users.

The problems related to closing lid might be related, but maybe it would
make sense to keep it as a separate bug report or at least not to remove
the original problem from the description of the bug. Another option
would be to change the description of the bug to include both problems.

I have two keyboard layouts: for USA and Poland. The latter is set up to be the

Since a couple of days after logging in, the keyboard is set to USA and has to

[Bug 446596] [NEW] fsck does not show progress during boot

2009-10-08 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

Every time during startup, screen is in the text mode (will be filed as a

During the run of fsck there is no information about the progress of the scan

This bug seems to be rather similar to Bug #110373.

[Bug 441580] [NEW] kile is listed twice in the Programs > Office menu

2009-10-03 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kile

Ubuntu Karmic Beta + all upgrades.

In Ubuntu's menu panel (GNOME) in the Programs > Office menu kile is
listed twice. I cannot see any difference between these two entries. The
correct behavior should be to have each program listed exactly once.

[Bug 422093] [NEW] [karmic] KDE after waking up from resume loses the bottom panel, then freezes

2009-08-31 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Karmic.

After resume from sleep, the bottom KDE panel disappears. Some buttons
work for a short time (for example, it is possible to right-click, the
screen, click on the "Leave" button but then the screen becomes dark,
the usual screen comes back, an the machine freezes) then computer
freezes and cannot be powered down (ctrl-alt-f1, etc. do not work).

After this, system complains about need of fsck, therefore the attached
information was collected not directly after freeze, but after freeze +
one run of fsck.

This bug started to show up after approximately Friday, August 28.

[Bug 419753] [NEW] [karmic] system fails to shutdown cleanly

2009-08-27 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Karmic Alpha (with Ubuntu installed alongside) + all upgrades

After the upgrades from August 26 the system fails to shutdown cleanly,
no matter if by clicking on the icon, Ctrl-Alt-Del in CLI, shutdown now,
etc.

In the CLI the last messages produced by system are either:

* Asking all remaining processes to terminate

or

init: rc main process (14669) stopped by STOP signal
init: rc main process (14669) continued by CONT signal

In each case the machine has to be powered down manually which causes
lot of pain (filesystems get corrupted!).

Machine: Thinkpad X61s.

I am tempted to close this bug because the bad behavior of apport has
changed. The situation described in this bug happens no more, instead I
get Bug #417688.

[Bug 417688] [NEW] [karmic] in KDE apport complains: "No such file or directory"

2009-08-23 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport-kde

Kubuntu Karmic alpha + all upgrades.

Apport opens a window with the title "Bledy raport o problemie"
[translation: report on a problem has an error], the message in the
window is "No such file or directory". As a result it is not possible to
report a bug.

This bug is probably related to bug #405378

Command ps aux | grep apport
results with:

[Bug 416806] [NEW] [karmic] command "shutdown 0" results only with a warm restart in rescue mode

2009-08-20 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Karmic with all upgrades installed, the Ubuntu desktop is
installed as well.

>From the terminal (either the text terminal at Ctrl-Alt-F1 or from the
>graphical "konsole" or "terminal") I run command
shutdown 0

As the result the system starts closing, display switches to text mode,
for about 10 seconds there are some problems with killing some process.
Then the system does not power down; instead a "warm restart" occurs
(means no BIOS checking, no GRUB greeting screen) and I get the console
of the system which usually can be seen during start of the system in
the rescue mode.

2009-08-19 Thread Katsudon
** Summary changed:

+ [karmic] ubuntu fails to suspend/hibernate if the session is started from the
terminal (startx)

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu Karmic, with all upgrades.

- The machine used to suspend and hibernate fine. However, after today's
- upgrades it failed to suspend after closing the lid. When "suspend"
- option is selected by mouse, only the screen gets locked. After
- unlocking the screen I get the message:
+ When I login to the text terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and start the GNOME
+ session by "startx", then any attempt to hibernate/suspend result only
+ with a locked screen. After unlocking the following error message shows
+ up:

  Menedżer zasilania: Sleep problem
  Your computer failed to suspend.
Check the help file for common problems

[ translation: power manager: Sleep problem... ]

- The same problem concerns hibernation.
+ The problem does not show up if I login to GNOME from the kdm login
+ directly.

[Bug 414140] [NEW] [karmic] impossible to switch from kdm to gdm

2009-08-15 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Karmic, with all upgrades installed.
Firstly, kubuntu was installed, then ubuntu-desktop was added.

It is impossible to switch from kdm to gdm using the standard command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
  * Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration...
  * Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action "reload" failed.

On the other hand, the command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

results with no output.
In each case, the standard dialog "Select the desired default display manager"
is not shown and kdm keeps running after the restart of the system.

2009-07-27 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Karmic alpha 3.

At various occasions I get a window with the following error:

KDEInit could not launch '/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/bin/javaws'.

The simplest way to get this error is to click on K-menu and then on the upper
right corner "KUBUNTU KDE".
Another way is to launch "Ubuntu One".
Yet another way is to launch Sage-notebook server (required sofware was
downloaded from http://www.sagemath.org/).

The output ls -l /usr/lib/jvm gives:
java-1.5.0-gcj -> java-1.5.0-gcj-4.4
java-1.5.0-gcj-4.4
java-1.6.0-openjdk -> java-6-openjdk
java-6-openjdk
java-6-sun -> java-6-sun-1.6.0.14
java-6-sun-1.6.0.14
java-gcj -> java-gcj-4.4
java-gcj-4.4 -> java-1.5.0-gcj-4.4

[Bug 405272] [NEW] [karmic] grub does not show other operating systems, nevertheless they are listed in grub.cfg

2009-07-27 Thread Katsudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

Kubuntu Karmic alpha 3.

System has Ubuntu installed on LVM and Windows on a separate partition.
Until Karmic all Ubuntu installs had no problems to detect Windows.

In Karmic, GRUB does not give Windows on the list of bootable systems.
However, Windows seems to be listed in /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
