[Bug 567961] Re: Wireless disconnects in Lucid

2010-07-04 Thread Kevin Christmas
I primarily use system connections with network-manager and I haven't
experienced this issue. My brother uses user level connections and
complained about this issue. We both have Intel based wireless cards.
I don't have access to my brother's hardware to test if using system
level connections makes a difference or not.

If someone wants to try, there's a checkbox that you can enable when you
configure a specific wireless connection. You should end up with a
corresponding file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections

[Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-10 Thread Kevin Christmas
I'd really like to purge my systems of this failsafe-x nonsense. Is
there documentation some where that explain how to disable the
ironically named program? When I was bit by this bug, I didn't have
access to another computer to search for a solution. I didn't have a
console to read the logs. I didn't have a boot disc either. I had no
way of getting a boot disc. I was hosed. It was awful, simply awful.

[Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-07 Thread Kevin Christmas
I had success with Philip's gdm patch! kdm[1064]: X server died during
startup and kdm[1064]: Failed to start X server. Starting failsafe X
server. are not to be found in the syslog.

PLEASE refactor this upstart sprawl. This was a very painful bug for
me. As an Intel IGP owner, I wasn't even given a terminal to fall back
to. It would be a shame if this bug reared its head again.

I have fixed packages queued in my ppa for anyone that doesn't want to
build gdm on their own (or wait for the official update).

[Bug 491483] Re: after recent update which included xorg, xserver etc causes low-graphics mode error at start

2009-12-05 Thread Kevin Christmas
I got KDM back up with x11-common=1:7.4+3ubuntu10. Details below.

Eli, I think it's related to this.

I have an Intel IGP. I managed to get the failsafe X11 up and running
by changing the value for Driver from vesa to intel in the newly
created /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe. I believe that xorg.conf.failsafe
was created when x11-common=1:7.4+3ubuntu10 was installed. Previously,
not even the (not quite) bulletproof failsafe mode would come up, nor
any terminals. I had to use a live cd to do anything. Painful.

To get KDM back and running, I created a new xorg.conf file that
contains only the following:

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
EndSection

[Bug 402767] Re: multisearch CSE breaks l18n+setfocus+images+cached+I'm feeling lucky functionality and violates user trust

2009-08-10 Thread Kevin Christmas
To those complaining about the tone in some posts, I think you fail to
realize that:

1) People are angry
2) Ubuntu has built up enough goodwill that they are complaining directly in
the channels that Ubuntu provides. This shows that they want to still want to
participate in the project.
3) When people stop complaining directly that either means that the problem has
been fixed or they have given up and moved on to the next latest greatest
project.

What's really troubling is that asking for consent is something that has
been done by other projects, such as popularity-contest.

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2008-10-25 Thread Kevin Christmas

1. Scott, I don't think the comments under point number one are going to be
useful to anyone other than making you feel better. When KDE 4.1 was released,
bluetooth worked with the latest release of *buntu. It continued to work until
just a few weeks ago in the development release. To get upset at them when
they're between releases isn't fair, useful, or productive.

2. I don't know if there's more configuration settings somewhere else,
but the gnome bluetooth-applet is painful. I have to constantly remove,
search, and then re-add my mouse.

3. I was convinced to try Ubuntu because, It just works.

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2008-10-18 Thread Kevin Christmas
Is there anyway to have bluez 3.x co-exist with bluez 4.x?

I'm frustrated that my bluetooth mouse no longer works as of just a few
days ago.

I confirm the other confirmations in the affirmative.

[Bug 255008] Re: Up arrow key mapped to Print [screen]

2008-09-26 Thread Kevin Christmas
I use the free version of NoMachine NX (www.nomachine.com) to connect from my
home PC (current Intrepid, the one
that had this bug a few weeks ago) to a PC at my university (current hardy).
Inside the NX window, the keyboard exhibits
the same behaviour as described here.

I'm having the exact same problem. It's very frustrating. Intrepid is
on my personal machine, connecting to a machine running hardy at work.

[Bug 36846] Re: The filesystem type of a volume is identified incorrectly.

2008-01-27 Thread Kevin Christmas
The hard drive in brother's external IDE was once JFS, but is now
formatted NTFS. I had the exact same problem. HAL kept thinking it was
JFS.

This is how I fixed my problem. In
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi, I added this

  device
match key=volume.uuid string=af6af532-eea3-435f-9b29-2340447d2375
  merge key=volume.fstype type=stringntfs/merge
  merge key=volume.fsusage type=stringfilesystem/merge
  merge key=volume.fsversion type=string3.1/merge
/match
  /device

It seems to work.
