Update.
Completely purged sasl2-bin. Manually found and deleted all folders and
files associated with sasl2-bin.
Reinstalled postfix and sasl2-bin. Reconfigured from top to bottom
again.
Checked the status of the service after several reboots.

I am not sure when this service broke. I normally check boot-messages
once in a while and only when there seems to be a problem. I found the
issue with sasl when I was looking for some other process log.
I will try and reinstall and reconfigure as suggested. And I will

Tested the same app on a different flavor of Ubuntu (Linux Mint 14); the
banshee version that was included with Linux Mint works like charm. It
seems that the latest version has this issue.

This feature (storing encrypted passwords) is available in subversion
latest trunk (31970) which will be released in the future (may be
1.6.0?). It is a huge feature which was added, and I don't think there
is any proposal for backporting this to 1.4.x branch since there are
quite a lot of API
