I may need to look in logs, I'm not 100% it's lookup that's failing it.
Just figured I'd mention it here.

[Bug 991308] Re: Dnsmasq fails to resolve if any upstream nameserver is unreachable

2012-07-30 Thread William Lightning
I continue to have issues here. This is likely unrelated, but worth
mentioning that I noticed VirtualBox VMs using the NAT virtual network
are also affected by the issues in question (VMs using the Bridged
virtual network adapter do not).

I've noticed that the website www.portlandgeneral.com if you try and
login using the quick login it always fails on lookup (in VirtualBox VMs
with NAT too!)

Yes, it happens with dnsmasq by itself. However it appears that dnsmasq

[Bug 991308] Re: DNS Querying fails if any DNS server is unreachable

2012-06-22 Thread William Lightning
Just noticed this as well:
http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/device.php?tier=-1devid=298e=0d3=0s=nso=0sc=1546

To quote the red bit at top:
Comcast has identified a software defect on the Arris TG852 and TG862, which
may cause problems for a small number of users attempting to use third party
DNS services. Arris and Comcast are working to correct this issue and will
deploy updated device firmware to resolve the issue. If a customer does not
wish to wait for the updated firmware, the customer may email us at
we_can_h...@cable.comcast.com and a replacement device will be provided at no
cost to the customer.

Although I am using the default Comcast provided DNS servers of
75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76, so not sure this would affect it or not.

2012-06-22 Thread William Lightning
Well when I did a manual dig @75.75.76.76 it timed out half of the
queries. The few responses it gave did seem good. That may not have been
representative though of the overall.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the issue has stopped happening.

Thank you for your attention to this issue.

[Bug 991308] [NEW] DNS Querying fails if any DNS server is unreachable

2012-04-29 Thread William Lightning
Public bug reported:

Release: 12.04
Hardware: HP Compaq 6910p Laptop

If the backup DNS server is unreachable, dnsmasq does not try to reach
primary DNS server.

In the following default configuration (clean install of 12.04) 1 out of
4 DNS queries fail. (DNSMasq seems to rotate queries between the listed
servers)

wlightning@archon:~$ cat /run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf

[Bug 991308] Re: DNS Querying fails if any DNS server is unreachable

Added above tag because the root issue that caused me to find this was
not present on 11.10: In the following default configuration 1 out of 4
DNS queries fail. (DNSMasq seems to rotate queries between the listed
servers)

More information:
I noticed this originally when the computer was reporting unable to update
packages, because it could not resolve hostnames needed to download packages,

[Bug 606887] [NEW] Does not support Mobile Broardband

2010-07-18 Thread Bright Lightning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-network

Why does indicator-network have to front-end connman when network-
manager already has all the features a desktop user needs for network
management such as Mobile Broadband, VPN, etc.

Why can't indicator-network be rewritten to be a front-end replacement
for network-manager-gnome (the Notification Area front-end for network-
manager). Surely this would be a much better option. I would of thought
that it would be easier to rewrite indicator-network to work with
network-manager (and change network-manager so it doesn't depend on
network-manager-gnome anymore) than to implement the necessary features
in connman and provide front end options for these new features in
indicator-network?

[Bug 573607] Re: Totem won't play XVID mpeg 4 files

2010-06-19 Thread Bright Lightning
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 453863 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453863

I also had this bug - when I open a video file (like an avi or flv or
mp4). However I found a solution on the ubuntu forums - I ran the
following commands:

rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/*
This removed the Gstreamer settings for the current user.

I then installed Gstreamer-Tools (check in synaptic to see if you
already have it, if not install it - or run sudo apt-get install
gstreamer-tools without quote marks).

and then ran the gstreamer-tools command:
gst-inspect
to rebuild the gstreamer settings.

This fixed playing the video layer for all these formats!

I hope you find this useful.

But the question is still there: Why can't unix extension and wide links work

I know it a security hole, but I really need this option one way or another.

[Bug 542005] Re: faulty symlinks on mounted samba volumes

2010-04-12 Thread Lightning
I don't get it what example you're exactly expecting but here is the full story:
I have 4 software raid arrays of 2 hard drives. (So md0 is the system's, md1
and md2 are storages, and md3 is for a kvm guest.)
Symlinks already existed and newly created work properly on md1, only inside
the partition despite who owns them.
Symlinks pointed to somewhere on md0 or md2 just don't, not matter where they
are or which user owns them.
Linux clients don't see the owner (not even numbers) and the attributes so
ls -l shows only ? marks for every details.
Windows clients just say access denied.

In case it matters the filesystems on the system is ext3, on the storages are
ext4.
As far as I know that md1 ain't different in any way. Only Samba's having
trouble with symlinks...
For now I've turned off unix extensions, I don't really need it.

2010-03-26 Thread William Lightning
Yep this fixed mine.
I used hp-probe -bnet -mmdns to scan all my printers, and correct the auto
detected CUPS URI with mDNS (to allow for DHCP changing IPs).

The resulting URI was:
hp:/net/Photosmart_C4700_series?zc=HPB96AF0

Possibly a bug should be opened with whatever does CUPS network printer
detection, to allow the hp URI to be used by default.

[Bug 545737] Re: Can not use HP PS3310 wireless network scanner

2010-03-26 Thread William Lightning
Doing some removing and adding of the printers. It looks like New
Printer wizard detects both DNS-SD and static IP, but not mDNS. The DNS-
SD section seems to appear first, which may be why you get people
selecting that.

After using the wizard to add both of my HP printers. I used DNS-SD on
my 1320 and IP based hp driver with the C4700.

kas...@archon:~$ lpstat -v
device for hp-LaserJet-1320-series:
dnssd://hp%20LaserJet%201320%20series%20(8892E5)._printer._tcp.local/
device for HP-Photosmart-C4700-series:
hp:/net/Photosmart_C4700_series?ip=192.168.1.111
kas...@archon:~$

With no mDNS with hp driver provided, using the hp driver selected one
will break every time the printer gets a different IP via DHCP.

Confirmed that multiple printers showing is fixed. It still pulls up a
static IP for the printer even when printer is setup for DHCP. Would it
be possible/easy to add mdns detection? Should I open a new bug for
that?

avahi-browse -a -r -t -k reports the mdns hostname as well as the IP.

[Bug 542005] Re: faulty symlinks on mounted samba volumes

2010-03-25 Thread Lightning
I've experienced this (or something same) recently too on 9.10 server, Samba
3.4.0.
I'm not sure since when is this lasting but I think upgrading the devicekit-*
package today might caused it.?
That was the last thing I did before noticed this bug...

It only affects symlinks and only on certain filesystems with unix extensions
enabled.
Without unix extensions symlinks works everywhere, otherwise only on one of
all my file systems.

[Bug 542005] Re: faulty symlinks on mounted samba volumes

2010-03-25 Thread Lightning
In my case wide links is disabled ever since I use Samba. The ordinary
symlink doesn't work if unix extension is enabled at the same time. By
doesn't work I mean they don't have any file permissions or even details
just '?' marks instead. It's been working until yesterday...

I'll be more specific: On the local system every symlink work. On the drive
named md1 there is no sign of this bug via Samba either (unix extension enabled
too). But on the drive md3 and sde1 symlinks don't work via Samba. I ran e2fsck
(-f) and It found nothing. All of the mentioned drives has ext4 filesystem
which were updated from ext3.
I'm only guessing this is a Samba only bug...

[Bug 542005] Re: faulty symlinks on mounted samba volumes

2010-03-25 Thread Lightning
I've experienced this (or something same) recently too on 9.10 server, Samba
3.4.0.
I'm not sure since when is this lasting but I think upgrading the devicekit-*
package today might caused it.?
That was the last thing I did before noticed this bug...

It only affects symlinks and only on certain filesystems with unix extensions
enabled.
Without unix extensions symlinks works everywhere, otherwise only on one of
all my file systems.
The file systems are on software raid arrays and the're ext4.

2010-02-28 Thread William Lightning
I was able to get NM to detect the modem by doing:

$ sudo modprobe usbserial
$ sudo modprobe sierra
$ echo 03f0 211d  /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/sierra/new_id

I have not successfully connected with this yet.

[Bug 207598] Re: GTK2 Open File Dialog causes crash

2008-05-06 Thread Lightning
Apparently debug symbols are now available, i have upgraded to hardy and i am
using the most recent versions of most packages including gtk2 and glib.
The application does crash when i navigate into subfolders that have no custom
icon (or settings), i have used the default theme, nothing changes, i had
experienced a similar issue with gimp even on other OS but since it affects my
whole system it's quite annoying, if you have any suggestions i will try them.
Will get another valgrind log in the morning.

[Bug 207598] Re: GTK2 Open File Dialog causes crash

2008-05-04 Thread Lightning
Will try again tomorrow, libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym shows wrong unresolved
dependencies, 2.12.9-3ubuntu3 is about to be installed but debugsym package
requires 2.12.9-3ubuntu2
I think libglib may not be enough for you to track the problem, it is strange
that directories that have custom icon can be browsed safely, this makes me
think it might be some configuration that got mixedup during the upgrade to
Feisty and persists even in Hardy.
Apparently i'm stuck until the repositories are in synch again :(

[Bug 93455] Error during Upgrade to Edgy

2007-03-18 Thread lightning
Public bug reported:

used recomended command
gksu update-manager -c
typed in password
chose the upgrade option beside the Ubuntu 6.10 in the popup window
upgrade starts and completes the first two steps (which names I don't remember)
giving an error that it can't change sources.lst
and on the third step prints this error and rolles back to Dapper

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

so here are the suggested files contents:
