Digging a little deeper, I found out that the reason, at least for me,
was a missing NetworkManager Applet.

I had my network configured manually and uninstalled the Applet.
When I reinstalled it, I could subscribe to Ubuntu One.

I left my manual
configuration untouched and the Applet always shows a little white cross in a 
red square.
I seems that it doesn't need to work properly, but it is enough if it is simply 
there, 

I can also confirm that it works with Chromium as default browser.

The problem is resolved for me.

Bug appeared with BIOS version 5 something.
8010 is available since early April.
Will try kernel 2.6.20 with new BIOS in a few hours...

work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the noapic 
option
[{numbers}.{numbers}]

at boot on my ASUS M2NPV-VM Motherboard with nvidia 430 Chipset.

Kernel 2.6.17 worked  fine.
