[Bug 1878045] Re: doing dist-upgrade got error related do Broadcom

2021-01-29 Thread Marvin Schin
Hi everybody,
my wifi (BCM43228) was working fine on focal with kernel 5.8. generic
But when I updated to groovy wifi does not work neither on 5.10 nor 5.11
generic.
I tried a lot of things, but nothing worked so far. Also not the solution
described above. I get the messages:

Anybody has an idea what I can do?

[Bug 1910455] [NEW] Thunar and Nautilus USB drive ejecting takes long time

2021-01-06 Thread Marvin
Public bug reported:

Every time i use PNY usb flash drive, when I am trying to eject it, even if i
did not store anything, it shows message "Writing data to a device, do not
disconnect". This message freezes the
window for a half of a minute or so. This issue affects both Thunar and
Nautilus, on both Ubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu Studio 20.04. The similar issue is
documented in the bug #1762595, but the message on the board with that bug
states that anyone encountering it should file a new bug report.

[Bug 1874926] [NEW] Error upgrade to 20.04 from 18.04

2020-04-24 Thread Marvin Giron Fonseca
Public bug reported:

Si

[Bug 1872772] [NEW] Keyboard shortcuts not working in Focal Fossa

2020-04-14 Thread Marvin Teichmann
Public bug reported:

[This is a release regression bug]

When using a number of default shortcuts like `Ctrl+Shift+W` (close tab) or
`Ctrl+Alt+Right` an error message appears reading:

"Ambiguous shortcut detected [...] No action triggered"

In previous Kubuntu Versions this issue was caused be the fact that
"Konsole" and "Yakuake" use the same set of shortcuts. It was possible
to circumvent this issue by unbinding this shortcut in one of those
Apps. For the shortcut `Ctrl+Shift+W` this workaround still works,
however for `Ctrl+Alt+Right` and some other shortcuts in Yakuake this
has stopped working.

I was not able to locate the conflicting shortcuts (in yakuake or any
other apps). When unbinding those shortcuts in Yakuake and using testing
them nothing happens. (So this is not a real Ambiguity).

This bug can be reproduced on a fresh Kubuntu installation with default
shortcuts and configuration. This bug extends to a number of self-
configured keyboard shortcuts. This severely impacts the usability of
yakuake (and hence kubuntu) for me. Using a terminal app without (most)
shortcuts is not very productive for me.

[Bug 1872746] [NEW] PIP should also be symlinked

2020-04-14 Thread Marvin Teichmann
Public bug reported:

The `pip` command on UNIX systems should refer to the same python
version as the python as the `python` command. Hence if this package is
installed `/usr/bin/pip` should symlink to `/usr/bin/pip3`.

[Bug 1491064] Re: Text editing very slow in 0.91 on files with many objects, normal in 0.48

2020-01-17 Thread Marvin J.
lacking any experience with GTK, I had a quick peek at the source and
noticed that the text-tool calls sp_event_context_update_cursor in the
input event processing quite a bit, whereas select-tool does not do
that. Instead, select-tool calls gdk_window_set_cursor(window,...) in
the GDK_ENTER_NOTIFY and GDK_LEAVE_NOTIFY events (which are not handled
by text-tool at all).

Sorry if I am sending people on a goose-chase here. I just found this
mouse-in-window dependency of the slow-down very curious!

[Bug 1491064] Re: Text editing very slow in 0.91 on files with many objects, normal in 0.48

2020-01-17 Thread Marvin J.
I have the same issue with inkscape 1.0beta1 (fe3e306, 2019-09-17) installed
via snap on Ubuntu 18.04.
But I noticed something potentially interesting though: for me, the *slowdown
only happens when the mouse cursor is inside the inkscape window*.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Load a sufficiently complex file that displays slow text editing.
2) hit F1 (selection tool) and click on a text element
3) move the mouse cursor *outside the inkscape window*
4) hit F8 (text tool) and edit the text element via keyboard only (it's very
fast for me)
5) hit F1 again
6) move mouse cursor back into inkscape window

This procedure makes text editing quite fast again. The slowdown is recovered
if step 3) is omitted.
Perhaps this can help to point towards the cause, maybe something with updating
the mouse cursor style (from arrow to text-cursor) is inadvertantly checking
for potential overlap with *all* text elements?

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps in nailing this bug down. It is a real
show-stopper (also using Inkscape for scientific figures and posters)

[Bug 1829437] [NEW] apt purge apache2 doesn't delete /etc/apache2

2019-05-16 Thread marvin
Public bug reported:

Expected:
After removing apache2 via 'apt remove --purge ^apache2*' all files and

This probably prevents the removal of /etc/apache2

Reproduce:
fresh install Ubuntu bionic

apt install apache2
apt remove --purge ^apache2*
ls /etc/apache2

Re: [Bug 1768208] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 1st Gen] Can't change brightness

2019-04-11 Thread marvin
Yea. Interesting. Could be connected to why my screen sometimes resets to
full brightness when using chromium on my X1-18 4.15.0-46-generic

Let me know if I can help in any way.

2019-04-10 Thread marvin
Hey. Cool.

Yea. I have a key board combination now which uses the xrander command, so
I have a work around. But the oled screen is not working on linux in
general because of the backlight issue. oled has no backlight.

What I find strange is that lenovo is not doing anything.

For example here. One of many posts.

Re: [Bug 1768208] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 1st Gen] Can't change brightness

2018-09-24 Thread marvin
Tried it and no change. The brightness is not affected by the system
settings or keys.

To verify my version
marvin@X1-18:~$ uname -r
4.19.0-041900rc4-generic

and xrandr is still working, but only for a short time until the screen
updates again to full bringhtness. Interstingly the nightlight works (color
is adjusted ... brightness seems as well, though I am not sure)
marvin@X1-18:~$ xrandr --output eDP-1 --brightness 0.5

Thx

Ok, for some strange reasons the libs were not there. I reinstalled them
again differently and now the situation is this:

marvin@X1-18:~$ telegram-desktop
This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt
platform plugin "xcb"
in "".

Available platform plugins are: dxcb, eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl,
offscreen, vnc, xcb.

Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I tried to reinstall all dependencies and get this...

There is a similar issue with telegram (only when installed through apt get)

marvin@X1-18:~$ telegram-desktop
telegram-desktop: error while loading shared libraries: libQt5Network.so.5:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Could be an issue during ubuntu install?

Re: [Bug 1777620] Re: failure during install. not this package is broken

2018-06-21 Thread marvin
Ok. Its dificult to say. I have installed Ubuntu 18 twice now (for
different reasons and different versions) and both times the installer
crashed. The shim-signed package and grub gave me problems. I had to boot
into 16 again and run the update-grub and again boot into 18. Then after
removing and installing shim-signed and grub-efi packages with apt-get it
runs. I thought I was booting in UEFI mode... but I guess not...

I guess you can close the bug since I lack the debugging information,
unless you have an idea how to check this?

Best Regards
Marvin Rueppel

2018-05-31 Thread marvin
Ok. Here the result:

assuming you only need the log files.

Executed as stated:

   -

   ls /sys/class/backlight > backlight
   -

   grep -r . /proc/acpi > acpi
   -

   sudo acpidump -o acpidump.txt
   -

   acpixtract acpidump.txt
   - Please note this must be done after the prior command, as it uses the
newly created acpidump.txt, in order to produce the files to attach
  DSDT.dat, SSDT1.dat, SSDT2.dat, and SSDT3.dat.
   -

   iasl -d DSDT.dat
   - Please note this must be done after the prior command, as it uses the
newly created DSDT.dat to create the file to attach DSDT.dsl.
   -

   sudo fwts > fwts
   -

   sudo fwts method > fwts_method
   -

   sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log

Ah ok. I could solve the mouse issue with

xrandr --output eDP-1 --auto --scale 1.5x1.5 --brightness 0.8 --panning
2560x1440

but then the screen looks terrible

Re: [Bug 1768208] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 1st Gen] Can't change brightness

2018-05-28 Thread marvin
Ah, thank you very much. It works. I think before I was using wayland thus
why it didnt work.

This command did it.
 xrandr --output eDP-1 --scale 1.25x1.25 --brightness 0.8

Using the scaling option also helped solve the scaling issue I had.
However, it showed another bug. When I use this scaling command (no matter
if fractional or not), then the mouse can still not move outside the 1x1
area. Meaning that if I scale such as

 xrandr --output eDP-1 --scale 2x2

then my mouse has only a quarter of the screen left for usage. Should I
file another bug report?

Re: [Bug 1768208] Re: OLED X1 yoga lenove, screen ubuntu, brightness issue

2018-05-24 Thread marvin
ok. Now Im on my 16.10 system again.

1. this is the comand I use for 70% it also works for numbers higher than 1
down to 0

xrandr --output eDP-1 --brightness 0.7

for this current system
Linux X1-16 4.13.0-43-generic #48~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu May 17 12:56:46
UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have not used it prior to 16.10 but I think it worked. All systems newer
than 16.10 so far failed to Support my screen.

something like this discussion.
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/X-1-Yoga-OLED-brightness-control-under-linux/td-p/3948282
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2337478

This looks like a solution to me, but I have not tried it because before
ubuntu 18 there was several other issues that made it unrunnable on my
machine.
https://github.com/udifuchs/icc-brightness

3) thx. what would you change it to then? Or leave it empty? Its my first
real bug report and I am happy to help.

Re: [Bug 1768208] Re: OLED X1 yoga lenove, screen ubuntu, brightness issue

2018-05-23 Thread marvin
Hi

1. When using 16.10, were you able to adjust the brightness via keyboard
key press, or you could only adjust the brightness via xrandr?

I could only adjust it with the terminal and xrandr

2. In order to allow additional upstream mainline kernel developers to
examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the
latest mainline kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/
~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:

after testing the kernel the bug still exists. Not quite clear where to add
the flag though.

kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v4.17-rc6

the grub issue I had is fixed. (not related to this bug)

kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v4.17-rc6

Screen brightness canot be adapted in any way.

** Description changed:

As with all the proceeding distros from ubuntu 16.10 the brightness of the
OLED screen canot be set. Since xrander is no more present there is also no
hack around this problem anymore. This bug is a killer for using the system as
full brightness drains the battery quickly.
OLED screens have no backlight, thus this might be the issue.

[Bug 1768208] [NEW] OLED X1 yoga lenove, screen ubuntu, brightness issue

2018-05-01 Thread marvin
Public bug reported:

As with all the proceeding distros from ubuntu 16.10 the brightness of the OLED
screen canot be set. Since xrander is no more present there is also no hack
around this problem anymore. This bug is a killer for using the system as full
brightness drains the battery quickly.
OLED screens have no backlight, thus this might be the issue.

2018-01-13 Thread Marvin
Public bug reported:

When trying to access anything using Java + HTTPS, the process is
terminated with an java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException.
Adding -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword=changeit to the command line
flags of java fixes this problem.

Either the trust store's password should be changed, or this flag sould
be added by default.

no patch needed anymore on Ubuntu 16.04 (tested with an unpatched version).
It's already integrated into systemd crypttab, just use the header=... option
in crypttab

[Bug 1573058] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 current not booting in Vagrant (gurumeditation)

2016-04-21 Thread Marvin R.
Public bug reported:

I'm using OS X with current Vagrant 1.8.1 and VirtualBox 5.0.18.
Because today is the release of Ubuntu 16.04 I wanted to give it a try and
failed. All other Ubuntu boxes from Canonical servers work here.

Here is the simple Vagrantfile:
https://gist.github.com/therealmarv/555f7efc1c55ffa288bca09191e4e705
which is using the image from
https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/xenial/current/xenial-server-cloudimg-amd64-vagrant.box

 $ vagrant up
Bringing machine 'default' up with 'virtualbox' provider...
==> default: Importing base box 'ubuntu/xenial64'...
==> default: Matching MAC address for NAT networking...
==> default: Setting the name of the VM: ubuntu-xenial-16.04-cloudimg

default: SSH address: 127.0.0.1:

The guest machine entered an invalid state while waiting for it
to boot. Valid states are 'starting, running'. The machine is in the
'gurumeditation' state. Please verify everything is configured
properly and try again.

If the provider you're using has a GUI that comes with it,
it is often helpful to open that and watch the machine, since the
GUI often has more helpful error messages than Vagrant can retrieve.
For example, if you're using VirtualBox, run `vagrant up` while the
VirtualBox GUI is open.

The primary issue for this error is that the provider you're using
is not properly configured. This is very rarely a Vagrant issue.

[Bug 1437913] Re: 8086:095b [Lenovo ThinkPad X250] Wifi unstable on vivid with Intel 7265

2015-06-01 Thread Marvin Scholz
As I already wrote on the other bug which is a duplicate (so iirc we
should only continue discussion here?):

I've tested v3.18.14-vivid [1] and it works for me, the first 3.19
(3.19.0-16) version (the one shipping with vivid) does not.

Doing `iw reg set US` as a workaround seems to work though. Note that on
the upstream bug it says:

There's a new patch in 3.19 that adds a check for regulatory validity
after the connection has been established. This seems to be the code
that is causing the deauth here.

[Bug 295691] Re: network-manager-openvpn does not allow you to make openvpn drop privileges

2015-05-19 Thread Marvin Kuurstra
I noticed this today and I'm astounded this reported bug from 2008 still
exists this day. It's good decency and a good security practice for a
program to drop root privileges after it's no longer needed, I can't
understand why network manager does not enable openvpn to do this.

And no you don't need to create another user account for this. Example of
networkmanager running openvpn (with some obfuscated details):
marvink@Desktop:~/keys/openvpn$ ps -ef | grep openvpn
root 11184 909 0 23:31 ?00:00:00
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-openvpn-service
root 11187 11184  0 23:31 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/openvpn --remote {IP}
--comp-lzo --nobind --dev tun --proto udp --port 1194 --auth-nocache --tls-auth
{ta.key} 1 --syslog nm-openvpn --script-security 2 --up
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-openvpn-service-openvpn-helper --up-restart
--persist-key --persist-tun --management 127.0.0.1 1194
--management-query-passwords --route-noexec --ifconfig-noexec --client --ca
{ca.crt} --cert {my.crt} --key {my.key}

me running openvpn manually:
marvink@Desktop:~/keys/openvpn$ ps -ef | grep openvpn
nobody 11920 2707 0 23:47 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/openvpn --config
{myconfig.ovpn}

Notice the own of the job, in NetworkManagers case it's root and with my own
command it's 'nobody' while I used the same config file in both cases.
