[Bug 1944481] Re: Distrust "DST Root CA X3"

2021-09-24 Thread Matt Jones
@jsing You may well be correct that the server was incorrectly
configured, unfortunately it was a Windows server managed by a third
party and I don't know precisely how it was set up. Given that the cert
in question was issued on 9th September 2021 I suspect it was a
misconfiguration of their intermediate cert they were sending.

[Bug 1944481] Re: Distrust "DST Root CA X3"

2021-09-24 Thread Matt Jones
I ran into an SSL verification issue today, caused by this change.

It seems that some older LetsEncrypt clients have still recently been
issuing valid certificates signed by the DST Root CA X3 root.

These certificates would have otherwise continued to work normally until
the root expired (September 30th 2021), but have been distrusted early
due to this change. (Indeed the certificate in question in my case was
still trusted by the latest Chrome etc.)

The best fix is to make sure the ACME client is up-to-date and re-issue
the certificates under the new root cert.

Posting for awareness - surprised I'm the first!

[Bug 285401] Re: Enhancment request, compact headers on evolution message preview pane

2011-07-08 Thread Matt Jones
I agree, Evolution seems to be a bit forgotten because there are other
email clients around which are more popular and have more releases.

However Evolution is the only choice for most Exchange users who want to
use the Linux desktop. We don't choose to use exchange, but our
companies force us to for corporate email.

How about a bit of evolution love, compact preview pane options and
correct sizing on preference dialogues does not seem too much to ask.

[Bug 645818] Re: Unknown keyword in configuration file: gfxboot

Comment #28 from Mikele worked for me.

Replacing the file vesamenu.c32 on the USB disk drive with that one
/usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 of Ubuntu Maverick system works fine,
and is a permanent fix.

This is the same when using Mint 10 and Mint 11.

[Bug 558810] Re: ldc.conf is missing some tango libraries

2010-08-29 Thread Matt Jones
I just tried it. The 1655 revision can't even build a simple:

void main() {
}

I dumps out linking errors like this:

/usr/lib/gcc/i686-linux-gnu/4.4.5/../../../../lib/crt1.o: In function `_start':
(.text+0x18): undefined reference to `main'
main.o: In function `_D4main16__moduleinfoCtorZ':
main:(.text+0x11): undefined reference to `_Dmodule_ref'
main:(.text+0x21): undefined reference to `_Dmodule_ref'
main.o:(.data+0x0): undefined reference to `_D10ModuleInfo6__vtblZ'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
Error: linking failed:
status: 1

I tried linking manually. But can't get it to work at all.

If you can't get the 1655 revision to work, I recommend moving to
previous version 0.9.1+hg1596-3, and fixing the ldc.conf file.

In my limited experience of building ldc manually, 1596 version is an
okay place to build from. Everything after that is extremely unstable.
The ldc devs need to put out a snap shot that works.

[Bug 455786] Re: battery indicator is wrong

2010-08-29 Thread Matt Jones
I have the same problem using a Fujitsu U9200 and Ubuntu 10.04. I do
not believe this is a bios problem as when I run virtual box with a
Ubuntu Host/XP guest, the Win XP will display the correct
battery/charging state, complete with the low power warnings, it
functions perfectly. There is just a problem with the way Ubuntu is
displaying the battery/charging state.

[Bug 489824] Re: power manager icon on system tray doesn't indicate battery status correctly

2010-08-29 Thread Matt Jones
Problem still exists in Ubuntu with the power meter showing the
incorrect state however;

- Ubuntu Host XP guest, XP will show correct battery charge and
discharge states

- Also installing WMbattery in Ubuntu (from repo's) shows the correct
state in it's graphic monitor, if only that one could be used in the
system panel

seems like an easy fix, but there are quite a few bug reports on this,
over the years and so far no one has been able to correct it.

[Bug 558810] Re: ldc.conf is missing some tango libraries

2010-05-05 Thread Matt Jones
The problem is that the /etc/ldc.conf file only has some of the tango
libraries. The switches are:

switches = [
-I/usr/include/d,
-L-L/usr/lib/d,
-d-version=Tango,
-defaultlib=tango-base-ldc,
-debuglib=tango-base-ldc
];

But they should be:

switches = [
-I/usr/include/d,
-I/usr/include/d/ldc,
-L-L/usr/lib/d,
-L-ltango-user-ldc,
-d-version=Tango,

[Bug 348204] Re: [Jaunty] Intel wireless 3945ABG is unstable and disconnects frequently

2010-01-14 Thread I am Matt Jones
karmic with kernel 2.6.31 Intel 3945 abg. Problem still exists. Mine is
much more severe. Computer hangs when trying to obtain an IP address
from the AP. WICD and NM produce the same results. After a full system
reboot WICD will connect to the AP but has no connectivity. When pinging
a url or an IP I get about 90% packet loss. After a minute or so the
connection will drop and will not connect again regardless of what I do.
This was a problem in 8.04, went away in 8.10, now it has rendered my
laptop useless again. When I boot from a live cd with an older kernel
the wireless works properly. Every time this has happened I've removed
Ubuntu and installed Windows waiting for the next release. I guess its
time to break out the XP cd again.

[Bug 252245] Re: unable to connect to windows network pc's

2009-12-03 Thread Matt Jones
OK I have a solution that now works for me.  If I use;

smb:///192.168.48.5/ - which is the default that comes up in 9.10, 3 /
's and it does not work

but

smb://192.168.48.5/ - with just 2 / 's, works for me, YaY!

Does that help anyone else?

Cheers
Matt

PS sorry about all the posts above, no idea how to delete them

[Bug 271041] Re: fullscreen-plugin should be enabled by default

2009-11-24 Thread Matt Jones
In previous versions of Ubuntu I have never had to enable this plugin.
But with Karmic to be able to fullscreen on double click I must enable
the plugin in Eye of Gnome.

It has taken me a week to work this out. I definitely vote for the
plugin being enabled by default just to prevent unnecessary stress for
new users of Karmic.

Someone just added the CVE link to this bug. Was it a mistake? That CVE
is for a buffer overrun security flaw in the Owl/BarnOwl instant

This bug still affects me after several re-installs of Jaunty final.
Using a usb mouse to get around it.

[Bug 367163] Re: gpg uses popup dialog instead of cli by default

2009-05-13 Thread Matt Jones
I think the use-agent option should not be enabled by default.

As mentioned above: It breaks lots of scripts, and makes no sense to
have a command line app also use a gui dialog by default, when it can do
the same thing in cli just fine.

I've also looked around for an explanation for this change, and found
none. If there is a good reason for it, then I will have to live with
it. But until then, my vote is on pure cli for cli apps.

[Bug 367163] [NEW] gpg uses popup dialog instead of cli by default

2009-04-26 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnupg

On ubuntu jaunty 32bit:

For some reason gnupg uses a popup dialog to ask for passphrases,
instead of using the command line. This means that things like debuild
will also use popup dialogs when signing packages.

This breaks lots of software and scripts that are reliant on it being
able to pragmatically drive gpg and debuild.

The default behaviour should be to use the cli. With an option for popup
dialogs.

This was not a problem in hardy or intrepid.

For some reason PCM was set to zero in the volume control. Somehow one

Awesome. This bug is a good 5 months older than #187313. But this one
gets marked as a duplicate. I fail to see why that is the case. This
thread has just a much noise, pointless details, and crappy descriptions
as that one.

Is this bug a victim of people rushing to get their 5 a day fix? Or
perhaps karma trolls? Perhaps this is a indication that we should dump
the duplication marking feature, and instead merge duplicates into one?

[Bug 254119] Re: wvdial requires root privileges

2008-08-01 Thread Matt Jones
Hold on a sec. You're moving too fast for me. :)

Maybe I'm not giving enough detail. If I run wvdial without root, it gives me
the error:
-- Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
-- Unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd.
-- Check permissions, or specify a PPPD Path option in wvdial.conf.

So it needs more privileges to run the PPPD dialer.

If I do a groups matt for my user that was created by the installer I get:
groups matt
matt adm dialout cdrom plugdev fuse lpadmin admin sambashare libvirtd vboxusers
kvm

Notice that the group dip is missing in Intrepid but is in Hardy, and
previous releases. This means that if you go to System Administration
Users and Groups and look at your user privileges. It will not have a
check next to Connect to Internet using a modem.

Everything seems to be fine when your user is added to the dip group.
Can you confirm this Gabriel?

Anyway. You are right. This is not a bug in wvdial. It is just a change
in the default accounts created by the Ubuntu installer. So whoever
knows why this was changed should change it back, or have wvdial mention
that you are not in the dip group.

This change could potentially break other things. Someone with major
Ubuntu foo should comment on this.

[Bug 209385] [NEW] clock applet hangs when adding a new location with no internet connection

2008-03-30 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

===Summary===:
If you try to add a new location to the clock applet (right click the applet
preferences Locations Add), and you have no internet connection, the
applet's dialog will sit there and block forever. You will have to kill the
panel to stop it.

===Release Info===:
This is using a fully up-to-date Hardy beta installed from the Ubuntu alternate
CD.

===Package info===:
gnome-panel clock applet(/usr/lib/gnome-panel/libclock-applet.so)
gnome-panel:
  Installed: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

===What I expected to happen===:
If you need to have an Internet connection, we should change the dialog to be
disabled and have a message that says you need a net connection to create a new
location. If you don't need a net connection, and we have cached the locations
on disk, then it should just work.

Since it is most likely that they will need a net connection: I made a
little mockup of how we could change the dialog to reflect that:

[Bug 148381] Re: right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer

2008-03-25 Thread Matt Jones
I've had this problem in both firefox 2 ff 3 beta 2 to beta 4.

It does not seem to be a compiz issue, as it behaves the same with
compiz turned on and off.

Can you be more specific about random things? If you hold the right
mouse button down, it should keep the menu open.

This can easily be fixed by moving the menu up or to the left a few
pixels. Because it stays open, this should not be that difficult to
implement for someone familiar with ff development.

[Bug 119308] Re: Gutsy shutdown doesn't

2007-12-27 Thread Matt Jones
Jerry's first mod works for me so far:

Do sudo gedit /etc/modules. Add the following line, then save:
apm power_off=1

But the second mod causes a bios error after grub on loading (not the
end of the world) but then I cannot see my laptop battery charging.

do sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst (where the l is a lower case L). Find the
line that start with kernel and add this onto the end, no carriage return,
all on the same line which probably wraps over:
acpi=off apm=power_off

But so far great, with just altering the modules.

Cheers Jerry, an annoying bug patched.

[Bug 154223] trying to archive a link to a FTP link or Drive creates unintuitive error

2007-10-19 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Step #1: Create a link to an FTP site using: Main menu Places Connect to
server, Or get a Disk visible on the Desktop
Step #2: Make sure the link (or disk) is on the Desktop
Step #3: Right Click the link (or disk) and select create archive
Step #4: Then a warning dialog pops and says The folder contents could not be
displayed and VFS error: Invalid parameters

I understand that this is more of an astetic thing, but think of
situations where people are selecting a bunch of files in a group. They
will get some error that does not tell them where the problem is, or the
source folder.

Something like: Cannot compress symlink 'ftp.bah.org' because it is a
link to a website would be a good start.

Hopefully you can get a good enough error from VFS to determine the
problem.

[Bug 152228] Re: Color for IOWait hard to distinguish from Idle color

2007-10-14 Thread Matt Jones
I understand what IOWait is. And I get that it isn't busy, but waiting.
But while it is busy waiting (har har), those CPU cycles are lost, and
that percentage of the processor is utilized, making the machine slower.

What I'm saying, is that seeing your IOWait is useful. And that with the
current color scheme, it looks like your CPU is idle when it is using
IOWait. For example, a use case:

Bob, a Windows/.NET developer is using Ubuntu for the first time. He
installs MonoDevelop so he can try out .NET on Linux. Bob launches MD
from the main menu. He notices that it is taking a while for MD to load,
and his HDD sounds busy. He looks at his system monitor to see how busy
the machine is. It looks like the cpu is at 2%, but his entire desktop
is very slow, even the things that would not touch the HDD.

Because Bob's can't see the difference between #002F3D and #00, he
has a usability problem.

[Bug 152228] Color for IOWait hard to distinguish from Idle color

2007-10-13 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

In the preferences, the default color for Processor IOWait is #002F3D,
which is very hard to distinguish from the default color for Idle
(#00). This can lead many people to think their CPU is at idle, when
it is at max IO wait.

I recommend changing it to white (#FF)

2007-10-10 Thread Matt Jones
It is still broken. Even when I create a new user, roboot, and login as
the new user.

Please stop marking this as fixed!

And thank you medigeek for nominating this for Gutsy. When I initially
reported It, I thought it was in the list of Gutsy bugs.

And, because I never mentioned it: I have an ATI X800XT Platinum Edition
with no restricted drivers installed (because they don't have compiz
extensions) on my desktop, and an NVidia Geforce Go 7700 with restricted
drivers for my laptop.

Both machines still give the same error with stacking windows.

I didn't want to fill the thread with more posts, so I emailed this to you.

That is interesting that it works for you. When I enable the restricted
driver and reboot. it says that my card does not support composite
extensions. I know it works, because I used to download the drivers and
install them from the ATI site, years ago with older Ubuntu releases.

Do you think I should file a bug report about it not working? I'm not
quite up-to-speed on how all the bug report procedures work in
launchpad. So I don't know if that is something they would care about.
Just wondering since you have more experience with it.

On a side note. I've often thought of just giving my video card to
Ubuntu, so they can make sure it works. It is kind of an obscure card.

[Bug 148381] right-click menu closes and selects items when it can't fit below mouse pointer

2007-10-02 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

If you place your mouse pointer near the bottom-right corner of your
browser window and right-click it, (to where the menu would not have
enough space to open naturally) the menu will open for a split second,
your mouse will select Switch Page Direction, the pointer will select
the item, and the menu will close. This can be done over-and-over to

[Bug 147943] compiz hides quick loading windows at login

2007-10-01 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-gnome

On my desktop, when I login to Gnome, (on a fully up-to-date Gutsy Beta)
the bottom Gnome panel does not show up. It will show up once I click on
its location. This only happens with Compiz running. Sometimes I can see
the panel for a split second before Compiz turns on.

I have also had similar problems in Fesity with compiz and beryl: On my
laptop, I have to sign in to the Gnome keyring to access my wireless
network. But the Gnome keyring shows up just before Compiz/Beryl is
loaded, and is then hidden right after it is loaded. It does not show in
the Window List, but can be seen and restored with alt+tab.

I would love to have this fixed before Gutsy ships. I am open to trying
your suggestions.
