[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2016-06-17 Thread Matthew Willson
I also have this issue with windows moving after unlock, on 16.04 with
one screen connected via DisplayPort and another via HDMI. When I switch
to both screens via HDMI (one via a thunderbolt/USB-C-to-HDMI adapter)
the problem seems to go away.

This is on a Dell Precision 5510, with the nouveau and intel (i915_bpo)
drivers for the nvidia and intel graphics respectively.

[Bug 1523698] Re: indicator-session is leaking memory on ubuntu 15.10

2016-05-27 Thread Matthew Willson
I also have an issue with unity-settings-daemon leaking memory.

Usually after leaving the machine overnight I come in to a unity-
settings-daemon crash, with no crash report due to lack of free memory.

In the last few hours it's gone from 170M to 316M and still gradually
climbing.

This is on 16.04.

[Bug 1580114] Re: [i915_bpo] Update i915 backport driver

2016-05-18 Thread Matthew Willson
Nice one, thanks. Is this released yet? I'll give it a try when it is
and report back. Hopefully it should fix my issues here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1568865 which went
away with a 4.6.0-rc7 kernel.

Incidentally 4.6.0 is now released and it seems like there's a few more
i915 related commits in the changelog since rc7, dunno if it's worth
including those too?

[Bug 1560395] Re: [i915_bpo] Update i915 backport driver

2016-05-09 Thread Matthew Willson
Any further backports would be gratefully received -- it looks like
there's been a fair number of i915 and skylake-related commits recently.

In particular I've had a bunch of display issues with external screens
with 16.04 on a Dell Precision 5510 (Skylake chipset), which are fixed
after installing the latest 4.6-rc7 kernel, but not with 4.6-rc4.

They seem to be due to intel DRM issues, linked to this error:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1568865?comments=all

[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A
FIFO underrun

Details in comments on the ticket, but I'm not the only one, and issues include:

- Laptop screen goes black when mouse moves into it, after hotplugging HDMI
- Blank screen on boot and/or resume with external screen plugged in

[Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-05-09 Thread Matthew Willson
I've now tried this with 4.6.0-rc7.

* I no longer see the "CPU pipe B FIFO underrun" errors in syslog,
although I do still see the stack traces like in #12 on hotplugging
displays.

* The "laptop screen goes black when mouse moves into it" issue is gone!

It looks like there are quite a few i915-related fixes in these new 4.6
kernels, any chance of backporting them?

2016-05-06 Thread Matthew Willson
@shinyblue (and others) would you be able to try the 4.6.0-rc6 kernel?
It looks like some new commits relating to i915 have been made since
4.6.0-rc4:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/?id=refs/tags/v4.6-rc6=300

drm/i915: Use fw_domains_put_with_fifo() on HSW
drm/i915: Force ringbuffers to not be at offset 0 -2/+5
drm/i915: Adjust size of PIPE_CONTROL used for gen8 render seqno write
drm/i915/skl: Fix spurious gpu hang with gt3/gt4 revs
drm/i915/skl: Fix rc6 based gpu/system hang
drm/i915/userptr: Hold mmref whilst calling get-user-pages
drm/i915: Fixup the free space logic in ring_prepare
drm/i915/skl+: Use plane size for relative data rate calculation

I'm assuming if you install a recent kernel you don't get the i915_bpo
module (Ubuntu's backported version of i915, not sure from when/where) ?

I am also seeing this, with a fresh install of 16.04 on a new Dell

Should have said, but this was on a Dell XPS 15 9550, with Windows 10

Workaround for me was to disable SecureBoot manually in the BIOS before

Incidentally the wording around this SecureBoot disabling stuff is very
"now or never" -- makes it sound like you'll never be able to install
the proprietary drivers unless you do this NOW, which is slightly scary.
Is that actually the case or can you do this later if you want?
