In fact, it's enough to move the mouse pointer close to the configured boundary between the external screen and the laptop screen, it doesn't have to go into the other screen. On moving the mouse out again onto the external screen, the laptop display comes back again. I don't see anything in the logs at the exact time this happens, but it seems to be preceded by the error above, which shows up when plugging in the external screen. It's somewhat intermittent in that it doesn't always happen (but usually does). This is when using the intel drivers.
