[Bug 358494] [NEW] Gnome Panel Crashes on start every time after 2nd monitor disconnect

2009-04-09 Thread Michael Morgan
Public bug reported:

I recently tried plugging in a 2nd monitor to my laptop, using TwinView.
I used nvidia-settings to configure the new xorg.conf, and everything
worked perfectly after I restarted X. However, when I removed the 2nd
screen from xorg.conf and restarted, my panel disappeared, seemingly
permanently. It kinda seems like gnome-panel is expecting to start up on
the non-existant monitor that I had removed, even though I never
actually moved it off of the first screen.

.xsession-errors is attached.

I'm running Compiz, with nvidia drivers, on Jaunty.

Subject: [Bug 120097] Re: Dell E530 (Sepang) No Audio

I reinstalled Feisty on my Sepang using the alternate install CD (the
Live CD wont boot). I then applied the linux-backports-
modules-2.6.20-15-generic_2.6.20-15.11_i386.deb package (to get E1000
ICH9 support) and rebooted. Then I ran the Synaptics upgrade, but
rebooted into 2.6.20-15. With no changes it appears to me that Sepang
audio works out of the box. I was able to record (from the front mic)
with variable volume, etc. 2.6.20-16 also works as expected.

This is weird.

[Bug 120097] Re: Dell E530 (Sepang) No Audio

2007-06-28 Thread Michael Morgan
Unfortunately, it seems that we may have to install 1.0.14 to get
everything to work. Realtek's modifications are negligent, and 1.0.14
definitely works when installed properly. The other catch is the
requirement of the model=3stack option for snd-hda-intel.

The reason I say we may have to install 1.0.14, is that the fix is in
alsa-utils. alsa-utils depends on alsa-lib. alsa-lib depends on alsa-
driver. When one changes the base API of the alsa-driver package to
1.0.14, the codecs and chip drivers also must be changed - symbols DO
change!!! When you change those drivers, the alsa-lib driver has to be
upgraded (same problem), and so forth for the alsa-utils.

Please prove me wrong!

[Bug 120097] Re: Dell E530 (Sepang) No Audio

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
ALSA 1.0.14 works natively, and so does Realtek's ALSA. RT's ALSA is
very close to 1.0.14, if not functionally the same (from what I've
gathered).

Realtek's version can be downloaded here: ftp://202.65.194.212/pc/audio
/realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a.tar.bz2

ALSA 1.0.14 can be downloaded here:
ftp://ftp.silug.org/pub/alsa/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.14.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.silug.org/pub/alsa/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.14.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.silug.org/pub/alsa/utils/alsa-utils-1.0.14.tar.bz2

Note that the './install' file in Realtek can be used as a legible guide
as to installing 1.0.14 just like RT does.

[Bug 122430] Driver updates should be located using arbitrary revision matching

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

When installing driver updates, the correct updates are selected by folders
named with the first three places of the kernel version (2.6.20). It would be
helpful to have the possibility of discriminating between a finer selection of
kernels, such as 2.6.20-15-generic, vs. 2.6.20-16-generic. This is a needed
function of DKMS driver installation, however, it may be done inside the DKMS
debian packages. It would be preferred if we could get past this, and do it
properly.

The matching was intentional to make dealing with security updates more
straightforward. This can still be implemented using the old 2.6.20
folder, but my request is for an expansion of functionality.

Question: could we possibly allow matching any length of the folder name
to the current kernel name?

   Ie. If [ `uname -r | egrep '^$folder'` ]; then use contents; fi

Obviously it is a bit more complex than this, but this is the general
idea.

[Bug 122432] Driver update loading does not wait for multiple medias.

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

Support for multiple driver update CD-ROMs should be incorporated natively into
Casper.
This is supposed to already be a feature (noted by cjwatson), and therefore
this is
most likely a bug, due to lack of testing.

The loader should wait for multiple devices, until the user manually

[Bug 122431] Casper times out loading driver updates

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

Casper seems to time out after a few attempts to read the CD-ROM
while looking for a driver update source. I would like to request that
this does not automatically time out, rather waits for either a user
interrupt, or continues until a valid source is read.

(cjwatson said:)
I think maybe after saying Could not find driver updates; re-insert install CD
and press ENTER it should go back to the start rather than exiting. Seems like
a reasonable request.

[Bug 119905] Re: Casper does not load piix CD-ROM module.

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
Should casper be attempting to load every module it can for meda such as
CD-ROMs, so that it doesn't miss any? It seems like this is what the d-i
installer does.

** Summary changed:

- Ubiquity does not load piix CD-ROM module.
+ Casper does not load piix CD-ROM module.

** Description changed:

-
When installing Fiesty gold with the desktop Live CD, certain CD-ROMS
are not recognized, such as Sony's CRX880A. This is due to the fact that
Fiesty does not probe the piix driver (note: not the same as ata_piix).

This causes problems with certain Dell Lanai (Inspiron 1420) laptops, which
come standard with this CD-ROM. The issue has been worked around by
using the 'break=top' kernel directive, and executing 'modprobe piix; exit'.

[Bug 119905] Re: piix migration to ata_piix breaks PATA: CRX880A

2007-06-26 Thread Michael Morgan
This bug is now retitled as a bug with ata_piix, having migrated from
piix.

** Summary changed:

- Casper does not load piix CD-ROM module.
+ piix migration to ata_piix breaks PATA: CRX880A

** Description changed:

- When installing Fiesty gold with the desktop Live CD, certain CD-ROMS
- are not recognized, such as Sony's CRX880A. This is due to the fact that
- Fiesty does not probe the piix driver (note: not the same as ata_piix).
+ With distributions (ie. Ubuntu's Gutsy Gibbon) now deprecating the 'piix'
driver,
+ we are forced to use the 'ata_piix' instead. This driver, however, does not
work
+ properly with Sony's CRX880A CD-ROM.

This causes problems with certain Dell Lanai (Inspiron 1420) laptops, which
come standard with this CD-ROM. The issue has been worked around by
using the 'break=top' kernel directive, and executing 'modprobe piix; exit'.
+ However, in Gutsy the piix driver will not be included anymore.

- This issue does not appear to happen using the d-i alternative installer, but
- only happens using the Ubiquity installer (which is shipped with the Lanai).
+ The ata_piix driver therefore needs a patch to fix the CRX880A for
+ Gutsy.
