[Bug 580319] [NEW] dhcp3-server launches before upstart brings all interface, thus failing to start

2010-05-13 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

My server's (primarily a NAT box/802.11g hotspot) network configuration:

Ubuntu release: 10.04 LTS
External interface: eth3
Internal interface: br0 (bridging eth2 and wlan0)

I run dhcp3-server on my internal interface to supply private
(192.168.*) IP addresses to wired and wireless devices throughout my
apartment.

I recently upgraded this server from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. After the
upgrade I've faced some problems with the startup process. The issue I'm
reporting here has to do with dhcp3-server failing to start during boot.

From what I can tell, upstart begins bringing up br0, which takes perhaps 15
seconds. While br0 is coming up (and still has an address of 0.0.0.0), the
dhcp3-server init script is started, but fails because 0.0.0.0 is not a
declared network and dhcpd fails to start, reporting:
May 13 22:29:40 firewall dhcpd: No subnet declaration for br0 (0.0.0.0).
May 13 22:29:40 firewall dhcpd: ** Ignoring requests on br0. If this is not
what

segment

May 13 22:29:40 firewall dhcpd:
May 13 22:29:40 firewall dhcpd: Not configured to listen on any interfaces!

It seems that dhcpd should start (or restart) when upstart brings up the
interfaces it is configured to listen on.

[Bug 481672] Re: [lucid] ath5k phy1: no further txbuf available, dropping packet wireless drops connection after large transfer on virtualbox to the host on bridged ethernet

2010-04-12 Thread Michael R. Head
I noticed that the new kernel in Lucid ( 2.6.32-20.29 ) now has the
above patch.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.32-20.29:

  * ath5k: dont use external sleep clock in AP mode
- LP: #553837
  * ath5k: fix setup for CAB queue
- LP: #553837

I'll try this for a few days and if it corrects it, then perhaps this
bug was just a dupe of #553837

[Bug 307154] Re: In disk Burning Setup, 'Propoerties' and 'Burn' NOT vailable

2008-12-17 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed. A friend of mine recently installed 8.10 and wanted to burn
some video files to DVD or VCD. Using Brasero he was able to load the
videos and click the Burn... button on the main windows. A dialog
popped up with some options about NTSC, PAL, and aspect ratio. The
Burn button on that screen never becomes enabled. He tried all the
options in that window, and nothing succeeded in enabling that button.

I've not reproduced his problem on my 8.10 laptop and I can't figure out
how to get that Burn button to be enabled. What is required to get
brasero to burn a DVD or VCD?

My friend has a USB drive enclosure that he put an older IDE drive into

We successfully using gparted to repartition the drive as one big VFAT

with usb-creator.

Any other ideas?

It's definitely still there in intrepid. Still looks just like the
screenshots posted from gutsy. (and the Acrobat Reader 8 still doesn't
display the boxes).

[Bug 289655] Re: Progress bars in Extract Here dialog does not update (always stays at 50%)

2008-10-27 Thread Michael R. Head
This is new in intrepid. I believe before intrepid, the progress bar
would be set in indeterminate mode. Here is how to reproduce:

1) find a large file, such as the ISO for intrepid
2) rar it into a multi-volume archive:
 rar a -v10240k intrepid.rar intrepid.iso
3) right click/Extract Here...
Note that the progress bar stays at 50% during the duraction of the extraction
(see attached screenshot).

[Bug 289655] [NEW] Progress bars in Extract Here dialog does not update (always stays at 50%)

2008-10-26 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

When extracting multi-archive rars containing a single entry, file
roller stays at 50% during the extraction.

File roller appears to be keying off the number of entries in the
archive to populate the progress bar, rather than the number of archives
in the set. This is somewhat disorienting because the progress stays at
50%.

In this case, either the number of rar files in the archive set should
be used, or the progress bar should be put in indeterminate mode.

[Bug 200138] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] TwinView only provides Xinerama information when monitor is connected during X initialization

2008-10-26 Thread Michael R. Head
Just upgraded to intrepid on my laptop here, and using nvidia-settings
to detect the hotplugged display seems to work.

Specifically:
1) attach monitor via VGA port on laptop
2) launch nvidia-settings (System/Administration/Nvidia X Server Settings)
3) Under X Server Display Configuratoin, select Detect Displays
4) Second monitor appears, select it and click Configure
5) set it to Twin View
6) click Apply

Upon completion, both monitors will be active, if they are set to be
side by side, the gnome panels will only appear on one of the monitors
(which is what is expected).

This is still a problem in hardy, though.

[Bug 255150] [NEW] Virtualbox modules were rebuilt for 2.6.24-20 in hardy-proposed, but found their way into hardy-updates

Public bug reported:

In fixing bug 252331, the new package appears to have been pushed to

[Bug 218070] Re: Nautilus not showing the desktop icons wallpaper on login

2008-07-24 Thread Michael R. Head
doing rm -rf .gconf/apps/nautilus removes this problem for me, but when
I go into the nautilus preferences and change the default icon size from
100% to 150%, the problem comes back (nautilus insatiably chews up CPU
and memory). If I try switching the default icon size back, nautilus
remains in the bad state. Attaching strace to nautilus shows that it's
spinning with poll on an EAGAIN (as shown in the original report). After
logging out and logging back in with default icon size set to 100%,
everything is OK again.

I'm seeing this on PPC-based mac hardware.

[Bug 225615] Re: Heavy memory leak in gvfsd-http

2008-05-21 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed in gvfsd-dav, too.

Reproducable using gnome-user-share on machine 1, and connecting using
network:// on machine 2.
Transfer any file from Public on machine 1
Fire up top and watch the memory blow up.

You'll also find that when the total size of the files copied exceeds
free memory, that the copy process fails and the dav mount must be
unmounted before it can be used again.

I've been hunting through gvfsbackendhttp.c and soup-input-stream.c
(and libsoup itself), but I haven't found the leak yet. Presumably
there's some buffer that's not being freed somewhere after the data is
pulled out...

[Bug 232295] [NEW] Google calendar plugin does not properly handle repeating events

2008-05-20 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Now that the Google calendar plugin works (in 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2), I've
found a smaller bug.

Here's my problem:

I have my google calendar connected both with an On the Web calendar
and a Google calendar in Evo.

I have repeating events in my online google calendar.

When I use the On the web calendar, all events show up properly as
expected.

When I use the Google calendar, I only see the first event in the
repeating series.

I believe there's a Duration: field in the XML which indicates how
frequently to repeat the event that is being ignored by evo. I think it
also makes mistakes with respect to the Except on: field.

2008-04-30 Thread Michael R. Head
Confirmed here as well. The fglrx kernel driver doesn't want to load
unless manually insmodded:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile$ ls

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile$ lsmod |grep fglrx
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/volatile$ sudo insmod

fglrx1555468 0
agpgart34760 2 fglrx,intel_agp

I have tried running sudo depmod -a but that doesn't seem to help
modprobe.

I installed the fglrx driver using the Hardware Drivers capplet.

This used to work in gutsy.

[Bug 220300] [NEW] Evince no longer thumbnails pdfs in hardy

2008-04-21 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

With the change to gio, it appears that PDFs are no longer being reported with
mime-type application/pdf. Instead, I see this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop$ gvfs-info plai-2007-04-26.pdf |grep content
  standard::content-type: application/x-extension-pdf
  standard::fast-content-type: application/x-extension-pdf

Unfortunately, in /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers, there is only
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I haven't been able to figure out how, in the interface
or in $HOME/.gconf to add a new thumbnailer entry for application/x
-extension-pdf.

[Bug 220300] Re: Evince no longer thumbnails pdfs in hardy

2008-04-21 Thread Michael R. Head
I added a new user, and it works in the new user's account.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/enable
true
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/command
evince-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o

Indeed, postscripts and pdf.gz files both thumbnail just fine.

So I'm guessing there's something odd with the gio/gvfs config for my
account that's causing gvfs to report pdfs with the wrong content type.

[Bug 87947] Re: xcb_xlib.c:50: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c-xlib.lock' failed.

2008-04-12 Thread Michael R. Head
The (first) error message is expected when LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1 is
enabled.

As long as your app isn't crashing, you can safely ignore the error,
since your app doesn't mix xlib and xcb.

The long term solution should be socket handoff, but I don't think
that will hit hardy:

[Bug 198111] Re: Evolution and Google calendar

2008-04-10 Thread Michael R. Head
Well, Ubuntu doesn't develop Evolution, probably it's better to ask on
the gnome bugzilla.

The best option I've found so far is to get the private ical feed from
each google calendar you want to access locally and add it as a calendar
On the Web. That way, the events show up in evolution and in the
clock/calendar widget.

This calendar will be read only as far as Evolution is concerned, but
you can sign in to the google calendar web site to make changes and
they'll be reflected locally.

[Bug 211732] [NEW] [hardy] videos aren't playing with proper aspect ratio

2008-04-04 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

After upgrading my G4-based Mac Mini from gutsy to hardy, I'm finding
that videos are not showing up properly. Totem seems to think that the
monitor (a 16:10 24 LCD, attached over a VGA cable, running at
1920x1200) is 4:3. When I play videos on it that, they are stretched
horizontally, and cycling through the available aspect ratios (with the
'a' key) doesn't solve the problem (for 4:3 videos they start out
appearing stretched out and only become more stretched out as totem
tries other aspect ratios for the video). This leads me to believe that
totem isn't figuring out the correct aspect ratio for the display.

I've tried with mplayer and VLC, and both seem to work (for example, 4:3
videos appear with proper-width side bars). Totem under gutsy worked
fine, too. The same videos running on my Thinkpad T61p laptop with a
1920x1200 screen show up just right using totem-xine and totem-
gstreamer.

I've tried both totem-xine and totem-gstreamer on the Mac Mini. Under
totem-xine the problem is actually worse: 4:3 videos have no side bars,
whereas with totem-gstreamer 4:3 videos have small (not large enough)
sidebars.

This happens using Xv or straight Xv-less plain X11 output.

[Bug 203825] Re: [hardy] GDM hangs on a black screen upon startup

2008-04-01 Thread Michael R. Head
I think I saw this, too.

In my case, I could see the beige background and the circular timer
mouse cursor spinning indefinitely. I went to a text console and ran
top. I saw that gdmgreeter was monopolizing the CPU. I editied gdm.conf
and switched to gdmlogin, restarted gdm and all was well (though
gdmgreeter probably shouldn't be spinning like this).

I didn't find anything apparently relevant in the gdm log, syslog, or
Xorg.0.log.

I reboot fairly often on my dual boot laptop. I have all the latest
updates as of april 1, I use the nvidia binary driver, and have a T61p
laptop with a Quadro FX 570M video chip.

[Bug 194623] Re: [hardy] running wondershaper gives 'What is flowid? Illegal police'

2008-03-20 Thread Michael R. Head
A Gentoo bug on another package suggests that flowid should be removed
from the lines that are using it:

[Bug 194623] Re: [hardy] running wondershaper gives 'What is flowid? Illegal police'

2008-03-20 Thread Michael R. Head
So I guess the change in iproute (or the kernel?) has caused the
wondershaper program to fail.

[Bug 194623] Re: [hardy] running wondershaper gives 'What is flowid? Illegal police'

2008-03-20 Thread Michael R. Head
BTW: it's this line (at the end of /usr/sbin/wondershaper) that's causing the
trouble:
tc filter add dev $DEV parent : protocol ip prio 50 u32 match ip src \
   0.0.0.0/0 police rate ${DOWNLINK}kbit burst 10k drop flowid :1

And, indeed, removing flowid :1 from that line causes wondershaper to
complete successfully. I haven't been able to test whether it still
limits bandwidth properly and maintains low latency under high transfer
rates.

[Bug 177548] Re: 4G RAM on Thinkpad T61p

2008-03-20 Thread Michael R. Head
I think you would need to use the 64bit version of Ubuntu (or the 32big
-server kernel, which won't have all the desktop restricted drivers) to
access more than 3G of RAM for userspace.

[Bug 150519] Re: radeon driver can not do xv with AIGLX enabled

2008-03-20 Thread Michael R. Head
A and B have at times worked on my oldish Thinkpad T30. It's got a
radeon 7500 with 16MB of RAM. At [EMAIL PROTECTED], GLX is disabled by
default because there's not enough RAM for the hardware to support 3D at
that resolution and bit depth.

BTW, (B) no longer seems to be working as of a week or two ago. I
haven't been able to fully investigate because my wife has the laptop
and is out of town, but I was able to get her video back by doing (A).

I assume this is a dupe of bug 199319. Perhaps it has a better stack
trace.

[Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2008-03-18 Thread Michael R. Head
My router is a (hardy) Ubuntu box which has an atheros-based card in
Master mode running hostapd. I've configured hostapd with a WPA-PSK (not
WPA-RADIUS or EAP), and I'm using TKIP and CCMP ciphers.

[Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2008-03-14 Thread Michael R. Head
Ah... I looked at the last few comments, and I was under the impression
that it was fixed in 1.2.1 (hardy has 1.2.0), but now that I take a
second look, I see that it was meant to have been fixed in 1.1.2.

I guess it's a pretty general error message.
