[Bug 1255700] Re: [HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2015-11-22 Thread Michiel Janssens
In the initial report the parameter radeon.dpm=1 was used.
However in newer kernels this setting is default, so dpm is enabled by default.

Nevertheless tested latest kernel v4.3 with parameter radeon.dpm=0, no
effect

Also tested with parameter pcie_aspm=force and pcie_aspm=off, no effect
pm-suspend with several combinations of quircks --quirk-s3-bios
--quirk-vbe-post --quirk-vbemode-restore, no effect.

Workaround:

Adding kernel parameter radeon.audio=0 resolves the issue.
However with that setting, not able to use audio over Displayport in that case
off course

[Bug 1255700] Re: [HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2015-11-17 Thread Michiel Janssens
Did a suspend resume test, with 15.10, kernel v4.3.
No external monitors connected.

Executed:
sudo sh -c "sync && echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace && pm-suspend"
several seconds after suspend (system is really suspended, blue suspend light
is glowing), put it in resume with power button.
As before, other lights go on very shortly, system crashes (all lights off,
sound of hdd shutting down not normally, same as long-pressing power button
while system running), few seconds after that, system boots by itself, so not
resumed.
Did same test with an extra udev rule so that resume with external mouse or
keyboard works, same behaviour.

Added dmesg_crash.txt and cat /proc/acpi/wakeup output

[Bug 1515776] Re: 1002:68a0 After suspend-resume graphics are sluggish and input lags with displayport connected

2015-11-17 Thread Michiel Janssens
Before reporting upstream I tested some further.
Narrowed it down a little bit:
The issue only happens when displayport is connected to Dell U2415 (wether or
not connected to an extra monitor (vga)).
When connected to displayport only on Dell U2412M the issue does not appear.
So the issue is related to U2415 with displayport, or a DP v1.2 capable monitor.
U2412M is only DP v1.1 capable.
Still no workaround. Daisy chaining is not posible because the graphics card is
only DP v1.1 capable.
I will report upstream now.

[Bug 1515776] [NEW] After suspend-resume graphics are sluggish and input lags with displayport connected

2015-11-12 Thread Michiel Janssens
Public bug reported:

This bug could be related to 1412730
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1412730

Description of the issue:
Booting up with displayport connected to Dell U2415 monitor, graphics and input
is responsive, also after logging in.
However after resuming from suspend-to-ram, graphics are sluggish and input has
lag.
Examples:
- transition from unity greeter login locked status to unlocked status: 6
seconds (normal 1 second)
- transition from clicking dash and getting window: 2-3 seconds (normal <1
second)
- starting gedit: 4 seconds (normal <1 second)
- mouse lags, sometimes the pointer is still on the left side of the screen,
while it should be on the right
- input from keyboard lags, about 1-2 seconds (normal no lag)

When unplugging the Displayport cable:
all lag is gone

When plugging displayport back in again:
lag is back, same as before

This issue only happens after suspend-resume.
After a reboot, response of graphics and input is normal
So two options to get rid of the lag: unplug DP or reboot.

Further investigation:
Did a mainline kernel bisect:
>From 3.13.11-ckt27 (good) to v4.3-wily (bad)
First bad is v4.0-rc1-vivid
Did a kernel commit bisect:
>From 3.19 (good) to 4.0-rc1 (bad)
first bad commit: [e55bca26188e45f209597abf986c87cc5a49894a] radeon/audio:
enable DP audio

Commit bisect log is attached

My daily baseline is 14.04.3 with HWE-Vivid.
But because in the current HWE-Vivid this issue isn't present I'm reporting it
via Wily as you can see in the logs.
I repeated testing of last good and first bad kernels on both 14.04.3 with
HWE-Vivid and 15.10.
Exactly the same behaviour.
I mention this because if this bug wont be fixed, it will still be there in the
upcoming HWE-Wily also.
And if thats the case, I won't be able to suspend my laptop without this issue.

[Bug 1255700] Re: [HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2015-11-12 Thread Michiel Janssens
It has been a while.
Tested again. Bios still the same.
Now with v4.3-wily kernel. Still the same result.
Now tested with Windows 10 also. Got the same result there too.
I think this really is a bios issue, probably wont be fixed if I ask HP,
because its an older model.
And I've learned to live with it.

Better to close the bug report.

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issue

2015-11-07 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,

I knew this would take some time, but the result is in de git bisect log.
Following the wiki I first did a mainline kernel reverse bisect from
3.13.11-ckt27 to v4.3-wily
Last bad was v4.0.9-wily
First good was v4.1-rc1-vivid

So after that I did a reverse commit bisect from 4.0 to 4.1-rc1

# first bad commit: [1d002fa720738bcd0bddb9178e9ea0773288e1dd] drm/dp: Use
large transactions for I2C over AUX
So since this commit the monitor is properly detected and resolution is correct.

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issue

2015-10-26 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi, I did some exhaustive testing, but first mi current setup:
Current base install is 14.04.3 with HWE Vivid, so that's kernel 3.19.0-30.
With no extra parameters bootup will still give wrong resolution and monitor is
not properly detected, so “unknown”. Bootup with kernel parameter
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=DP-1:edid/U2415.edid gives consistently correct
resolution and monitor is properly detected. Once in a while the U2415 is off
when it should be on, but switching back and forth with VT gets the monitor on.
So not much changes since last tests.

But testing with the following newer kernels:
4.0.0-04, 4.0.9-0400090, 4.1.0-040100, 4.1.10-040110, 4.2.3-040203 and
4.3.0-040300rc6
Monitor is properly detected and resolution is correct since 4.1.0-040100.
Still correct in 4.3.0-040300rc6.
So since 4.1.0-040100 there's no need for me to add the extra edid kernel
parameter anymore.
So you I guess we can say its fixed in 4.1.0-040100.

However since 4.0.0-04 I got another issue that might be related.
After suspend/resume the graphics are sloppy, kind of slow motion feel, mouse
and keyboard input have great lag, response very slow.
A reboot can solve that, but also disconnecting displayport. And this only
happens with displayport connected with U2415.
Should I file this in a new bug report?

Think I will report these results in the upstream bug report too.

2015-04-17 Thread Michiel Janssens
#63 solved my issue too.
Ubuntu 14.04.2 Unity.
Behaviour: some shortcut key combinations were not working suddenly.
f.e. ctrl+alt+T and custom shortcuts did not, but alt+TAB did work
And just Super key long press did work too, but not a combination with it.
In CCSM disabled Commands completely, after that all shortcuts were working
again.
After enablling Commands in CCSM again, all were still working.

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issues

2015-02-27 Thread Michiel Janssens
Christopher,

Vivid with fglrx: none off the reported issues exist. U2415 is detected every
time, display resolution is right, also dpms powersaving works as expected. In
ATI control Center all hardware is detected. Also no xrandr issues
Trusty with fglrx: same as with vivid, none of the issues.

The main reason I'm not using fglrx is because it's proprietary, but also
because the opensource radeon gives much better perfomance.
With fglrx there is lag in windows moving and resizing, also in videos. Next to
that there is a lot of tearing visible. Whem turning on tear-free in Catalyst
Control Center the lag gets even worse.

So fglrx is a workaround, but not a pleasant one. The lag and tearing is
visible too many times during daily work.
At the moment I prefer my own workaround as mentioned above with the radeon
driver and drm helper kernel parameter.
This way the displays work great without lag, but when booting, switching users
in Unity or just going in suspend/standby I have to put the screen off and on a
couple of times to get it out of standby.

One thing I noticed with the radeon driver: switching back and forth
between vt7 and and another vt gets the U2415 out of standby too
(eventually).

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issues

2015-02-26 Thread Michiel Janssens
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected reproducible vivid

** Description changed:

My Laptop HP Elitebook 8740w has two external screens connected.
1 DELL U2412M connected to vga connector
1 DELL U2415 connected to Displayport.

I worked for about a year with a single external display, just U2412M on
the displayport without the issue I decribe.

  The first issue:
When booting up and with screens attatched and active, the 2415 boots in
1024x768 resolution, the 2412 boots at the same moment in 1920x1200 as it
should.
At the point where the login screen appears the 2415 goes in power save mode,
most of the time.
The 2412 displays just fine at the moment.
After logging in, turning the 2415 off and on, sometimes helps the get the
screen active (out of power save).
When it gets active, the resoltion is 1024x768, not 1920x1200.
In unity-control-center in display settings the 2415 is displayed as Unknown
Display and the maximum resolution I can select is 1024x768.

  Second issue:
After a laptop suspend the 2415 doenst alway become active again, the 2412
always.
Turning off an on the 2415 multiple time mostly helps to get the screen
active.

  Current partial workaround:
xorg.conf with monitor section for 1920x1200 as in attatchment.
This doesn't solve booting in 1024x768, but solves the resolution after
logging in.
  unity-control-center still lists Unknown Screen

  Another strange behavior:
when executing xrandr command, most of the time the 2415 stays in 1024, but
after a number of executions the screen swithes to 1920x1200. At that moment
xrandr outputs all possible resolutions as it should.
When executing xrandr another time the 2415 switches back to 1024x768

Already tried kernel v3.18.3-vivid, no change.
Also tried Utopic live cd, no change.
Tried Windows 8.1, no issues with both screens. (however my main OS is Ubuntu
trusty, so..., just for testing)

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issues

2015-02-26 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,

The issues still exist, so still unknown display in All Settings -
Displays, wrong resolution (highest 1024x786) on U2415, power saving
issue on U2415. The issues seem exactly the same as on trusty.

I was not able to use the daily live iso, for xdiagnose extra debugging option
requires /etc/default/grub to be updated and only works after reboot.
I had a physical Vivid install already running on this laptop (multi-boot),
which i keep as clean as possible and use for this kind of issues, so no
customizations.
So I upgraded this vivid install to the current state with apt-get
dist-upgrade. After that I enabled xdiagnose extra debugging, deleted
~/.config/monitors.xml, booted and started the apport collection as you
requested.

Please tell me if I can help you with more information.

[Bug 1412730] Re: DELL U2415 monitor detection issues

2015-02-13 Thread Michiel Janssens
Investigated the issue some more.
Seems that EDID is not always given by the monitor when asked by the OS, for
instance via Detect Monitors via gui or via xrandr via command line.
The workaround with xorg.conf I have abandoned. It wasnt working great too.
Still a lot of time X was detecting resolutions again resulting in garbled
screens or non active screen, however it stayed at the right resolution.

I managed to extract the edid for U2415 (256 byte), which i have attached.
Parse-edid has issues reading the extension block, but in Xorg.0.log I never
saw issues reading the edid when it was available from the monitor.
My current workaround is by using kernel commandline parameter
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=DP-1:edid/U2415.edid
This seems to work well.

most of the time.
+ At the point where the login screen appears the 2415 goes in power save mode,

The 2412 displays just fine at the moment.
After logging in, turning the 2415 off and on, sometimes helps the get the

Already tried kernel v3.18.3-vivid, no change.

2013-12-01 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,
Every time I test resume, the system is finshed suspending, so screen is off,
disks are of, only power led is fading in and out, indicating that its in
suspend mode.
Waking the laptop via sleep button is not possible. Only the power button
short-press wakes the system.

2013-12-01 Thread Michiel Janssens
Tested from live usb:
10.04.4 has same issues as reported, going into suspend takes a few seconds
longer then saucy.
10.04 won't suspend. When suspending, screen goes black, leds stay on. Then
after 10-15 seconds the screen turns back on again. Shutdown works however.

[Bug 1255700] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-30 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,

Did some testing as you requested via live usb.
In 12.04 and 12.04.3 the issue is the same.

Also saw that mainline kernel v3.13-rc2 was available, so tested with that also.
No difference, and like v3.13-rc1 shutdown doesn't work.

Changed the tag from kernel-bug-exists-upstream-v3.13-rc1 to kernel-bug-
exists-upstream-v3.13-rc2, if thats ok.

[Bug 1255700] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-29 Thread Michiel Janssens
Tested with upstream kernel 3.13.0-031300rc1.201311221535.
Same results for this particular issue.

But with this upstream kernel the system doesn't shutdown properly.
It begins shutting down, screen goes blank. After that it's non-responsive,
power/fan/leds ar still on.
I then have to long-press the power button to force shutdown.
This only appears with upstream kernel, not with current kernel 3.11.0-13.20

Another thing I noticed:
The reported issue appears when suspending for the first time since booting the
system.
However, when waiting a minute after first suspend to wake it up, the issue
seems almost gone. Resuming from suspend within 2 seconds is possible, multiple
times.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

[Bug 1255700] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-29 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi Christopher,
This also occurred in raring, but I did not report it then, all main kernel
versions.
Decided after a while to go experimenting with raring with UEFI Bios options
enabled, in the hope that it would respond better, but came to conclusion that
it's a very experimental option in my systems BIOS.
So when Saucy came out I turned UEFI off and using the default BIOS settings
since saucy fresh install

Before saucy I was running WIndows 7, but cannot recall if this issue happened
there.
Running encrypted disk at the moment so installing windows dualboot must be
done on an external esata disk.
If this is an option worth investigating please let me know.

[Bug 1255700] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8740w] suspend/resume failure

2013-11-27 Thread Michiel Janssens
Public bug reported:

This crash happened as follows:
System put in suspend. Quickly wake it up via sleep button on the keyboard.
(within about 3 to 5 seconds)
System goes on briefly (about 3 to 5 seconds) ,crashes and reboots.
This crash happened with the lid closed all the time and a seperate keyboard
connected.

This issue also happens with the lid open, but mostly I don't have a
seperate keyboard connected. In that case it will only wake up by
pushing the power button. Lid opening doesn't trigger a wake, but I
guess I will have to file a seperate bug report for that.

If I wait much longer (say a minute or longer) before waking the system,
resume works perfectly.

I will try kernel 3.12.0-031200.201311031935 and see if I still can
reproduce this issue.

[Bug 801952] Re: problem with ATI Catalyst Control Center (Administrative Mode) launcher

2013-06-24 Thread Michiel Janssens
Solved it:
As noted in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2154044highlight=enter+the+administrative+password

gksu-properties was set to su instead of sudo.

Wasn't related to amdcccle.
I had exact the same issue when trying to upgrade the VirtualBox Extension pack.
Both act normal now.

[Bug 801952] Re: problem with ATI Catalyst Control Center (Administrative Mode) launcher

2013-06-24 Thread Michiel Janssens
Did some searching and found this:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/284306/why-is-gksu-no-longer-installed-by-default-in-13-04
As this post mentions gksu is deprecated as stated in comment #4
Don't understand why then gksu-properies does default to gksu instead of gksudo.

[Bug 1101867] Re: virtualbox-guest-dkms 4.1.22-dfsg-0ubuntu2: virtualbox-guest kernel module failed to build [VBoxGuest-linux.c:206:49: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘

2013-02-11 Thread Michiel Janssens
Hi bit-mahendra94,

Easiest way without using svn checkouts etc:

open the c file as stated in #10 in a text editor:
sudo gedit
/opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.2.6/src/vboxguest-4.2.6/vboxguest/VBoxGuest-linux.c

browse to:
https://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/44317/vbox
Copy the green lines in place of line 199 (not the line numbers, just content)

Save the file.
Continue at step 4 of #10
