[Bug 617211] [NEW] Fade Windows can get stuck if rapidly toggled

2010-08-12 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Tested on: Fresh install of 10.04
Note that I'm assuming that 'fade windows' comes from the main plugins package
- it did not seem to be in either? Maybe its part of the core?

The Fade Windows plugin is used by several other plugins (such as the
ADD helper). If one of those plugins causes it to rapidly fade and
unfade, it can get stuck faded. This only happens when in constant
time' mode - constant speed never sticks.

To cause this problem:
* Enable Fade Windows
* Switch Fade Windows to Constant Time instead of Constant Speed.
* Cause windows to rapidly fade and unfade (the goal is to have a fade overlap
an unfade on the same window).

My favorite way to reproduce this is to turn on another plugin like ADD
helper (Which makes unfocused windows fade) and then turn on Ubuntu's
Select Windows When the mouse moves over them option (in
system-preferences-windows). Then just put two windows on your
desktop and shake the mouse rapidly between them to cause them to
flicker. Note that you HAVE to have 'constant time' not 'constant
speed' selected.

There's probably an easier way to reproduce this, by turning the fade
time very high so you have plenty of time to cause multiple fades to
begin on the same window or something.

Note that even without trying to cause this to happen, after about a day
of using the machine, all windows will inevitably have had the fade
effect stick just due to alt/tab or popup windows or such... so the only
workaround is to make sure its set to constant speed.

** Affects: compiz-fusion-plugins-main (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 576496] Re: Lost ata interrupt, usb hid (mouse keyboard) freezes

2010-05-29 Thread Nick Lawson
This problem affects me too. However, its different, it only affects
USB devices on the same IRQ as the SATA_NV driver:

 23: 786792 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ohci_hcd:usb2, sata_nv

In my case, that OHCI_HCD (usb hub) is actually an external hub built
into my monitor. Once I moved my mouse and keyboard away from that hub,
they were no longer affected by this issue. (However, I still get the
issue, and the computer freezes up while its doing the soft reset).

It seems pretty random, and I scanned for bad blocks on the HDD
(badblocks) and found none.

The other thing different is that for me it didn't completely freeze the
mouse, but it did lower the sample rate to like 2hz, so the mouse moved
very slowly (and typing was very delayed).

Oh. Some more information: Setting the computer to suspend (or

working normally (for a while)

[Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2010-05-05 Thread Nick Lawson
I have written a qt tray-icon based background app that basically keeps
the mouse in the screen by polling for when its gone out of the screen,
but this is a very suboptimal solution since it has to poll many times a
second and eat cpu. It sometimes reaches 1% cpu even! And X is still
getting the events, so it kind of bounces at the edges, not a great
solution (but better than nothing).

A proper solution would be to somehow get the driver or the X system
involved, because we'd want to intercept these pointer events before
they reach X or at least before it sends them on to client applications.
If someone has information on where to start looking if I wanted to mess
around with this at a higher level (X or driver or something) please let
me know - I have the means, but I'm kind of lost in the architecture
here. There are so many interacting subsystems...

[Bug 209338] Re: [Hardy] Move To Trash broken with new gnome-vfs

2008-04-04 Thread Nick Lawson
Possibly. I was under the impression that each individual app that used
to move things to trash needs to have gnome-vfs support to work properly
now (ie, there is no universal fix). I could be wrong.

If it's indeed the case that individual apps needs upgrades, it means
bug #208277 would be because of any random app that hasn't got the vfs
support yet.

However, the 'symptoms' of this bug are different from whats described
there... to be more specific the system-wide trashcan shows up as empty,
and opening up the trash can using the trash applet (or vfs link) shows
nothing there. (Becuase the files were moved to a different folder
which the trash can applet is not watching).

Basically, if the user is not knowlegable enough to know that its moving
the files to ~/.trash, it will appear to them as if the files are being
erased, but they will gain no disk space. The trashcan itself won't
actually show up as full or needing emptying

[Bug 209338] [NEW] [Hardy] Move To Trash broken with new gnome-vfs

2008-03-30 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: baobab

(Hardy Beta patched up to date as of writing this bug)

In the folder/file list, Right-click Move to Trash
Disk Usage Analyzer moves the file to ~/.Trash instead of
~/.local/share/Trash/files, (or just trash:/// ) so nothing shows up in the
gnome-vfs trash applet, etc.

Those files moved in that way will essentially sit there until the user
manually deletes them out of ~/.Trash, and will not show up in the
nautilus trash folder or the trash applet etc.

[Bug 153635] Re: [vmware] nm-applet No Network Devices Have Been Found error

2008-01-27 Thread Nick Lawson
I'm experiencing this too.

I needed to have roaming mode enabled though, for VPN. I finally got a
workaround working by removing the vmxnet module, and only using
pcnet32. The rest of the vmware tools functionality (drag and drop onto
desktop) seems to still work, although it somehow seems slower.

[Bug 64814] Re: apt wants to auto-remove all my system!!!

2007-05-26 Thread Nick Lawson
iKs wrote:
kubuntu-desktop is a meta-package anyway so removing it wont affect your
 system at all.

But its still a problem that apt-get doesnt know how to handle
dependencies correctly. As a temporary solution, I would tell you to use
aptitude, which works perfectly on my system (ubuntu-desktop) and which
is supposed to be the new generation apt tool :)

That's what I thought too - and it was true the first few times. Like,
it'd say its removing kubuntu desktop but it'd be all fine. So then I
removed kaffiene and keb too, and each time it listed more and more
packages as being removed. I guess once kubuntu-desktop has been
removed, it believes that all the packages inside kubuntu-desktop are no
longer necessary. So each time if I remove 2 or 3 things like kaffiene
and keb it will uninstall the entirety of KDE.

This is on the latest feisty btw. And I tested it via the 'add or
remove programs' graphical UI and it had the same result. In other
words I can screw up this system (recoverably, if you're not a newbie
user, but I dont like to make that assumption) just by removing things
like keb and amarok via the 'add or remove programs' gui.

[Bug 64814] Re: apt wants to auto-remove all my system!!!

2007-05-25 Thread Nick Lawson
This has happened numerous times on this system.

Needless to say I've had to reinstall. It screwed up the system a
couple times already.I do something like 'hmm, I don't have a sound
card so I don't need amarok' and so I apt-get remove amarok and it
erases kubuntu desktop, everything. It seems to be triggered anytime I
remove anything that comes with the kubuntu-desktop package. Maybe the
system doesn't realise that kubuntu desktop is needed by other packages
or something (I dont know how the packages work, tbh).

In one case it even removed my network connectivity stuff and I couldn't
even apt-get to fix it because apt-get update failed (no connectivity).

Somehow, it thinks that nothing is referencing kubuntu desktop if you
remove any component of it.

[Bug 64814] Re: apt wants to auto-remove all my system!!!

2007-05-25 Thread Nick Lawson
I just gave this a test.

I installed kubuntu-desktop: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

I waited until it was all done

I removed amarok:

sudo apt-get remove amarok.

It offered to remove kubuntu-desktop for me. I told it 'uh, ok' and boom, all
gone.
Its not even listed under 'atuomatically installed'. It says
The following packages will be REMOVED: and lists kubuntu-desktop under
there! This is after already deleting the extended_states file as mentioned
here.

Thank goodness that this time I had ubuntu desktop installed as a
backup...

[Bug 115081] path text doen't fit in widget in the 'receiving email' config dialog

2007-05-16 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Version: Feisty using up-to-date packages and a pretty basic install.
tested with all themes including the human themes. I will attach PNGs of the
issue.

Basically, if you're creating a new mbox, maildir, or other type of
folder or file based receiving type of server, the dialog that shows
your current selection does not give enough space in the widget for the
text to appear (see screenshots).

1. Open evolution and configure one of your server accounts
2. in Recieving Email subfolder, choose maildir format
-- The text inside the folder/file chooser does not fit, I don't know what its
supposed to say. This combined with the folder select bug was causing a lot
of confusion.

[Bug 110128] mountconfig crashes while 'scanning' for windows shares

2007-04-25 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

up-to-date Feisty install, no special packages, etc.
Kubuntu-Desktop installed.
This runs in a VMWare.

To reproduce this bug every time I simply
1. Open the system settings or kcontrol app
2. Go to the mountconfig pane
3. Enter admin mode
4. create a new entry by clicking new
5. change the type to 'windows file shareing'
6. Click the 'scan' button which appears
-- A scan dialog appears for a second or two, then the entire thing crashes :(
-- ALSO, if I fill the information in manually instead of scanning, clicking
'add' does nothing. no feedback, no new entry, no error box.

Note that I can properly mount samba drives and can use konqueror to
navigate the various machines on the network manually, or by using
konqueror browser and fstab so on, but if I didn't know about that stuff
I'd be lost when it came to mounting the FS (ie as an everyday user)

Note that also even if I fill the information in manually, clicking the
'add' button does nothing at all. this is probably related (?).

[Bug 44146] Re: ksystemlog crashes

This is happening to me too, in latest feisty.

I can reproduce it here every time - all I need to do is change the type
of logs being viewed to anything except the kernel log, then change it
back to kernel log. If I do this once it tends to happen most of the
time. if I change to EVERY different type of view before coming back to
the kernel log, it will ALWAYS crash while populating the kernel log
view.

Note that there are two different outputs below.

I could paste more, but it seems to crash in a different place every
time.

[Bug 103018] ksysguard applet displays become unusable if they ever become blank

2007-04-04 Thread Nick Lawson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

Version: Latest Feisty Beta, updated just before making sure its
reproducable to post this bug.

Environment: kubuntu-desktop under VMWare (So, no crazy compiz or
compositor or anything like that)

1. Add the System Guard applet to the KDE panel
2. Right click on the system guard settings (not the individual display
settings, but the settings for the applet itself) and add additional displays
-- The displays appear blank. This is fine. The problem is, there is nowhere
obvious to click to fill them back up with information. In fact, there doesn't
appear to be any way at all to fill them with data.

Any clicks you make on the blank panels appear to go through them to the
underlying KDE bar instead of allowing you to configure that display.

This problem is made worse if a user accidentally alters the original 2
panels (CPU and Mem or whatever) or reduces the number of panels,
causing them to blank out because it can never be restored.

Clicking on the border / all over the empty panel does nothing.
It remembers this blankness everytime you remove the applet and add it again,
so it appears it is forever unusable from that moment on.
