[Bug 1796273] [NEW] Anki crash at starts with unsupported QT library version

2018-10-05 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Installing Anki from the repository in Ubuntu 18.10 makes the
application crashing because of a mismatch of QT library (5.9 required
by Anki upstream, and built with 5.11). Going further make the
application crashing.

Installing the application from the tarball downloadable from the
website works.

Maybe Anki should be converted also to snap?

[Bug 1795808] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2018-10-03 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Since the installation of Ubuntu 18.10, I get the login screen but once
logged in I get a black screen. It happens only with the proprietary
nvidia driver 390. If I remove the nvidia driver to use nouveau, it
works.

My graphic card is: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070 Ti]

So the automatic report in attachement will show you no nvidia driver
installed. It's because I am doing this bug report after removing the
nvidia driver to be able to get a desktop.

In attachement I add the journalctl of the preview boot which failed
with nvidia driver.

[Bug 1717769] Re: day of week in german despite i configured the system in english

2018-03-06 Thread Nicolas Michel
I understood the mecanism (but not the involved code):
This problem is easily reproductible: installing a fresh Ubuntu from CD,
choosing "English" as the language and the keymap"Belgian", makes everytime the
region language in German.

[Bug 1753272] Re: Weird grub boot display since Bionic

2018-03-05 Thread Nicolas Michel
Hi,

Today, the new patch (ubuntu8) was available. I tested and confirm the
new package fix it. I didn't have to flush of purge the grub package. An
apt full-upgrade was enough.

Thank you.

[Bug 1753272] [NEW] Weird grub boot display since Bionic

2018-03-04 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I have a Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti. Everything was fine on Artful. I decided to update
to the Bionic beta to test it. Since then, the grub menu display is fucked up
(when I move the highlight with the keyboard arrows, I have the text written
twice: one in black and white, one with the purple/violet background and not
aligned).
See the screenshot attached.

Re: [Bug 1717769] Re: day of week in german despite i configured the system in english

2018-01-21 Thread Nicolas Michel
Hi,

I don't think it is about a wrongly translated string, but more about the
combination of regional choices that makes the langage mecanism choose the
locale in german (all my interface is in right english but my calendar and
days of weeks in softwares).

I guess it is something because of:
- in Belgium we have 3 official languages: Dutch, German, French
- I chose in my settings english language with Belgium format and Belgian
keyboard
- so maybe since there is no english locales for belgium, maybe the code is
written to go by default for german locales strings

What do you think?

[Bug 1725949] [NEW] nouveau drivers fails to start a wayland session and fallback to x11

2017-10-22 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I have a Nvidia GTX 670. I tried the nouveau driver. At boot, it takes a
unusual long time then finally shows me gdm3 and everything is working
after. But echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE is set to "x11". Reading the logs, I
can see that after multiple failures to launch wayland, it falls back to
X11.

I added an attachement of journalctl -b -1 where it fails with nouveau
(I'm filling the bug after reinstalling nvidia proprietary driver).

[Bug 1723803] [NEW] Enable Networking fails DNS configuration with systemd-resolved

2017-10-15 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I'm testing Ubuntu 17.10. The DNS is not well configured when choosing
"enable networking".

Steps to reproduce
--
- Choose recovery mode from grub
- choose "enable networking"
- Choose "drop to root shell prompt"
- You can test name resolution with ping www.google.com or apt update. It fails.

Explanation
---
- /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /var/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf
- The file is configured to use the local DNS forwarder made available by the
systemd-resolved service
- In recovery mode, systemd-resolved service is not started and trying to start
it by hand doesn't seem to work

Workaround
--
Replace the symlink /etc/resolv.conf by a text file and configure a known
working DNS. For example:
nameserver 8.8.8.8

[Bug 1717769] [NEW] day of week in german despite i configured the system in english

2017-09-17 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Description
---
I chose the english language and live in Belgium. So I chose Brussels for the
Time Zone, and the Belgian keymap.

The Ubuntu date & time applet, in the top bar of the Ubuntu desktop
interface shows me "Son HH:MM", Son standing for "Sonntag" which is
german. I don't get why there is german in my interface since I
configured this language nowhere but English.

Expected Behavior
--
Having the day of week in English.

My configuration to reproduce the problem
-
Here is the region & language configuration as seen in the settings pannel:
Language: English (United States)
Formats : Belgien
Input Sources: Belgian

In the "Date & Time" settings:
Time Zone: CEST (Brussels, Belgium)

[Bug 893031] Re: Empathy is not working behind the proxy servers SINCE Ubuntu 11.10

2013-04-23 Thread Nicolas Michel
I'm so surprised that nobody from the UBUNTU team can't take care of this
problem which is:
- old
- confirmed
- should be a staple feature of any OS

Probably that you are busy working on mobile features that nobody use?

I'm sorry, I love free softwares, but sometimes, it is really frustrating.

[Bug 1057169] [NEW] Trying weston with the official ppa but don't get the lightdm greeting

2012-09-26 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I followed the instructions here :
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/%2Bspec/desktop-q-system-compositor

But when I add to lightdm.conf the "type=weston", lightdm can't start
anymore. The problems seems to be dbus related.

[Bug 523484] Re: ureadahead requires /var on root filesystem

2012-02-14 Thread Nicolas Michel
Still there. On a production server (maverick). As you know, production
servers are always setup with separated /var, /home, /tmp to make it
stronger to disks full ...

Not really clean indeed seing all these errors at the boot process ...
Even if it doesn't hurt.

Re: [Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-07-18 Thread Nicolas Michel
Out of curiosity:

Why Linux have this problem and Windows don't?
This is not a troll. I don't understand technically : if hardware
devices don't propertly support the ASPM power-saving modes, why Windows
is not concerned?

-> add to your kernel option (into grub) pcie_aspm=force

If you don't know how to do it, you'll find instructions into previous

[Bug 776342] Re: e-calendar-factory takes sometimes more than 1GB of RAM

2011-06-24 Thread Nicolas Michel
To P Cantwall : this is exactly what I did : as you see I also subscribe
to this bug because I had it on Ubuntu 11.04. Because of that and other
broken packages (and completly buggy Unity), I quit Ubuntu for
Archlinux. And I'm now very glad (of course, Archlinux need to be a
little configured and understood to make a good desktop environnement
but once it's done, this is really pure hapiness).

[Bug 777685] [NEW] Unity Desktop is very slow (almost freezed) when decompressing with tar a LZMA file onto a USB Device in vfat

2011-05-05 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I'm using Unity with Natty in 64 bits kernel.

I'm not pretty sure this issue is kernel related but since the problem
seems to be the WA (so IOPS workload), it may be.

Problem description :
- I have a 1,1GB LZMA compressed file onto a vfat USB storage device
- I launch a shell (guake - bash) and launch a "tar -xvf file.lzma" so the file
is decompressed directly onto the USB storage device
- Then my desktop is almost freezed
- a top tells me my CPU is overloaded because of the IOPS waiting time :
top - 11:10:42 up 22:38, 1 user, load average: 5.77, 5.88, 3.67
Tasks: 201 total, 2 running, 194 sleeping, 0 stopped, 5 zombie
Cpu(s): 5.0%us, 3.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 4.1%id, 86.9%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.3%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 3957404k total, 3922740k used,34664k free,37792k buffers
Swap: 6143996k total, 521680k used, 5622316k free, 359436k cached

Expected behavior
I know that USB storage devices are generally very slow so I can understand
that the job takes some times, but it should not makes the Unity Desktop
unusable.

nm

[Bug 701816] [NEW] Need a VOIP group in the communication roaster of Ubuntu (letter icon)

2011-01-12 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When wanted to make a SIP call phone with empathy, I actually need to
clic on the letter roaster in the gnome status-bar, choose "chat" which
opened empathy window. Then choose "chat" in the application menu and
then choose "New call".

This is really not intuitive nor optimized (4 clics to make a phone call
- it should be 2 or 3) and "chat" on which I need to click is not really
the action I want to since I want to make a voice call.

So either the "chat" name of the category is not a wise choice, either
you need to add a new category named VOIP.

Don't need to restart the system!
Just add one line to the postscript install script of network-manager-vpnc

service network-manager restart

and you'll have a clean installation for users.

[Bug 695028] [NEW] network-manager need to be restarted after vpnc installation

2010-12-28 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Hello,

When installing network-manager-vpnc-gnome, after configuring immediatly
a VPN profile, connexion failed to be established. Network-manager tells
this is a secret error with the notify box in gnome GUI. When looking at
/var/log/syslog we see that the secret is not provided to the plugin
(although we configured it well in the vpn profile). If we set in the
VPNC profile to "always asks" the secret, when launching the VPN, it
failed without asking the secret to the user.

The only solution : restart manually network-manager :
/etc/init.d/network-manager restart
Then it works!

Simple but I got a user blocked all morning because of it...

Please if network-manager need to be restarted after the vpnc plugin
installation, please do it (post-install script?).

Thank you,

[Bug 675421] [NEW] Output Order should be set at "reverse" by default

2010-11-14 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Hello,

When creating a new printer, the option "OutputOrder" should be sets to
"reverse" by default because this is what 90% of peoples wants : don't
have to sort manually pages after being printed.

And I have to say that I'm a computer scientist and that option is not
easy to find (once you know it, this is easy, but when you don't know
what to search for exactly, this is not so easy). So for an end user, I
think it may be hard to configure the printer that way.

Thank you,

[Bug 666241] [NEW] Problem while moving screens in the "monitor preferences"

2010-10-25 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm under Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop in 64 bits. I already had the same
problem on the 10.04.

To have the bug, you necessarily need at least two screens with different
resolutions.
I'll explain my case, with my laptop screen (resolution of 1280x800) and my TV
which have a HD resolution : 1920x1080.

Steps to reproduce the bug :
- connect the TV with VGA cable on my laptop
- launch "monitor preferences" application
- activate the TV
- switch from left to right (or inversed) the laptop screen and the TV screen
with drag and drop in the "monitor preferences" window. (for exemple : monitor
preferences put the TV on the left by default. But in the real world, my TV is
on the right of my laptop).
- then there is a "hole" in the workspace of the bigger screen (TV in my case)
and that hole seems to correspond to the bigger resolution minus the smaller
one. That hole is black (it hides the wallpaper) and can't be used as workspace
(this is not only a problem of hiding the wallpaper but really a piece of the
workspace which is missing).

To "solve" the problem, I then need to decrease the resolution of the TV
screen. And increase it again to its real resolution (1920x1080). At
that point, I have my TV screen well configured!! Pffiou...

[Bug 607146] [NEW] Feature request : being able to launch a command before starting the backup process

2010-07-19 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I want having the possibility to configure a command or a script to launch
before the launch of the backup process.
Why I'm asking that? Here is my case :

- I make my backups on a samba share, mounted with gvfs.
- that share is not mounted automatically but only when I want to access it via
Nautillus

-> if the share is not mounted, backintime can't make the backup.

-> I'd want to execute the command gvfs-mount "share_name" before the
backup process

It would be great if the user can also define a timeout for the script
execution (with a default value) -> if the script crash or hang, we
don't make backintime hanging.

Thank you,

[Bug 334082] Re: Most mp3 files listed with "Unknown" length

2010-06-20 Thread Nicolas Michel
Hi,

I had the same problem on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bits desktop edition.
Every audio files sits on a NTFS type of partition. Some files duration are
tagged "unknown" and others are the correct length shown.
I resolved the problem by deleting the media DB file :
~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml so the next time rhytmbox is started it
have to rebuild the DB. That new import is showing lenght correctly, for all
audio files without exception. So there was a problem during the initial and
first build of the DB (maybe at that time my environment missed a codec or
something needed by rhytmbox to do the job correctly??).

You'll see above some dpkg -l to see installed version of softwares.
You'll also find a copy of the corrupted rhythmdb.xml in attached file.

[Bug 578285] Re: Since Lucid, notifications are not really clear

2010-05-11 Thread Nicolas Michel
Currently that "communication" icon is a letter. White when no
notifications. Green if we received a mail or an event in empathy or
both.

What it should do? Here is an idea.

There is some cases :
1) we received no mail and no new event in empathy :
the letter icon could be white as it is already implemented

2) we received some mails and no new event in empathy :
the letter icon could be green as it is already implemented

3) we received a new event in empathy but no new mail :
there is only a static green phylactery icon (we don't see the letter icon
anymore)

4) we received a new event in empathy and we also received some mails :
the letter icon is green. It switches slowly to a green phylactery icon. Then
fade again to a letter icon and so on (loop) until we have an other kind of
event (as describes above). The transitional effect between letter icon and
phylactery one could be a fade effect (the opacity of the letter icon decrease
while the opacity of the phylactery one increase).

I talked about blinking icons in previous post but I find it boring for
a daily use.

[Bug 578285] [NEW] Since Lucid, notifications are not really clear

2010-05-10 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Hello,

Since Lucid, empathy notifications were been merged with the e-mail ones. For a
daily use, this is not so effective : we don't see well notifications. So I
don't see as fast as I want when somebody talked to me.
I installed ppa of empathy, where I don't have the Ubuntu patch and have an
empathy icon.

I think this is a good idea to group notifications and decrease the
number of icons in the gnome status toolbar. But I think the way it is
implemented is not ergonomic.

[Bug 578280] [NEW] automount of network shares

2010-05-10 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello,

It would be great if nautilus could automount network shares (nfs,
samba, ...) when available. For example, with d-bus message of network
manager, when we have an "up" action. Nautilus could ping all registered
shares and if available, mount-it with gvfs.

I know we can make something with a startup script, but this is not
really usefull when using a laptop on a very mobile way (connect from
network to network, sleep mode, etc).

But maybe you think this is not the job of Nautilus?? If not, this is
the job of which program?

[Bug 376432] Re: Wish list

2009-05-15 Thread Nicolas Michel
I continue the wish list :
- have the possibility to configure more precise cursors. Actually, I have a
white hand. The center is not exactly the center of the hand, neither the
bottom or the top ... Something like in photoshop in which we can choose
target-like cursors.
- have the possibility to create profiled objects (I think of line styles for
the different shapes) and add them in the tools menu. In fact, something like
an "instance" of an object (with size et properties configured).
- have the possibility to have a blank background on text shapes (not
transparent) and/or be able to change the opacity
- have a short ruler to adapt the zoom in addition of the list of predefined
zoom percentages

mmhm the last one is probably a troll subject? Add better nice-looking
library of pictures? ;)

[Bug 376432] [NEW] Wish list

2009-05-14 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

I think Dia needs some improvments to be up-to-date ... :
- use the printing system of the desktop (gnome, kde, ...) but not lpr like it
is actually (not user-friendly at all)
- add a bind key on : space + right click let pressed and movment of the mouse
to move the grid. This binding exists in almost every graphic program, from
photoshop to inkscape, gimp, ... I don't like having to click of the "move"
icon in the menu (Alt+s) to do that action.
- the zoom on the document should be slowier (not zoom from 100% to 141% in one
movement of the scroll wheel of the mouse or one CTRL + '+')
- there must be a 'fit to document' button on the bottom of the editing window
to adapt zoom and center the view
- we should be able to draw a "document space". I'll explain. In dia, there is
a grid. Blue lines are the limit of the document size we choosed. If we want to
use more than one page, we should be able to choose it. Or mayby this feature
could be done automatically. Actually, the problem is : if I draw accidentally
a line on to 2 pages but wanted to draw only on one page, I sometimes see it
only when printing, not before.

In evolution, I have two mail accounts : one IMAP and one Exchange.
I created some rules to filter e-mails and moves them into the appropriate

Since one week, if a create a new rule, the automatic filtering failed with
this error message :
"Error while filtering selected messages.
Cannot get folder 'INBOX/mailing list/lilit': folder does not exist."
But the folder do exist.

This bug come with IMAP as well as Exchange account.

I reinstalled my ubuntu from scratch to see if the bug persist. And it don't.
When I reinstalled Ubuntu and BEFORE upgrading packages, rules worked well.
Then I updated and upgraded Ubuntu and the bug is came back.
The problem comes with IMAP as well as Exchange accounts.

[Bug 293359] [NEW] When ejecting a CD/DVD media the cd reader close itself immediatly !!!

2008-11-03 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 8.10,
with gnome-mount 0.8-1ubuntu1,
after reading a media (CD or DVD, it doesn't matter), I try to eject it.
It does but nearly immediately, the cd reader close itself.
To take my media, I need to be fast ^^

I'm sure this is not a hardware issue. I booted on OpenSuse 11 on KDE
and I have no problem.

I don't really know where to look to give you more information.

Sincerely,
Nicolas MICHEL

[Bug 292242] [NEW] Disable the mousepad when an usb mouse is connected

2008-11-01 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 8.10,
with 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu7,
about gnome-mouse-properties,
in the configuration gui of the mousepad,
it would be nice to have a checked box option to enable/disable the disabling
of the mousepadd when an usb mouse is connected.
Wether this option is checked or not, on the very first time a user connects a
usb mouse, a popup window may be opened to ask the user if he wants to do that
automatic disabling each time.

Best regards,
Nicolas Michel

[Bug 292002] [NEW] Add an entry in the nm-applet to the nm-connection-editor

2008-11-01 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 8.10,
with network-manager-gnome version 0.7~~svn20081020t000444-0ubuntu1,
about nm-applet,
it would be nice having an entry in the applet named something like "advance
configuration" which would be a shorcut to "/usr/bin/nm-connection-editor".
I know the shorcut is currently placed in the system/preferences but when
configuring networks, it would be practical to have every ressources at the
same place.
(The best in my opinion would be having these two shorcuts : one in the applet
and one in the system/preferences)

Nicolas Michel

[Bug 246079] Re: Brasero creates checksum by default

2008-10-16 Thread Nicolas Michel
I agree with Benjamin.
Newbies may not know this is a plugin and may wonder why the burning process
is so long.
And personnaly, I only enable these plugins for really specials or importants
burnings but not for day-to-day! This is too long.

You should either disable these plugins by default or ask the user what
to do at the installation process.

Pedro, you say this will be fixed but I'm trying Intrepid and checksum
plugins are enabled by default yet.

I need to say that on Ubuntu 8.04, the bug is still here. I have an old

don't needing to do that.

[Bug 263515] [NEW] Wrong french traduction in the help page of the Blackjack game

2008-09-01 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

On Ubuntu 8.04,
on the gnome-games package version 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2,
on the french help page of the Blackjack game,
there is a wrong traduction :
In the chapter "Bases du Blackjack", in the section "Égalité", it is written :
"Lorsque les valeurs des mains du joueur et du croupier sont égales et que la
mise initiale retourne au joueur."
It would probably be : "Lorsque les valeurs des mains du joueur et du croupier
sont égales, la mise initiale retourne au joueur."

[Bug 123078] Re: System -> Quit takes a long time to appear

2008-08-20 Thread Nicolas Michel
I need to confirm what Arthur Furlan told. I also had this problem of waiting a
long long time before the quit window comes.
I had also unchecked "gnome-power-manager", thinking it would be unnecessary
for my desktop computer.

I tried the tip of Arthur : I re-checked the "gnome-power-manager" in
the sessions' preferences to make it active and the bug is disappeared
immediatly with the next login session.

[Bug 246427] Re: The "quit system window" take a while to come

2008-07-16 Thread Nicolas Michel
I need to add :
- when the quit window take a while to be displayed, I can't choose "hibernate"
or "sleep" my computer. There aren't any icon. I can only change user, quit
session, lock the screen, reboot and halt.
- If I cancel this quit window after it takes a while and afterwards clic on
the gnome menu to quit the system again, It is always displayed immediatly the
quit window, AND I have icons for hibernate and sleep. I can retry again and
again, after the first displayed of the quit window further system quit will
never take a while (whithin the same user session).

[Bug 246427] [NEW] The "quit system window" take a while to come

2008-07-07 Thread Nicolas Michel
Public bug reported:

(Ubuntu 8.04 - nvidia 8600gt - Envy-ng - compiz-fusion)

Since I installed and activated compiz-fusion, the window to quit the session
(in the gnome menu -> System/Quit) come after a long long while. Meanwhile the
gui is freezed and I can do nothing but ctrl-alt-backspace.
I need to say that I installed the last proprietary nvidia driver with Envy-ng
for my 8600gt.

I don't think I'm the only one in that case, I read some discussions
about that on the net.

If I create a new user, he don't get the problem!
