[Bug 1132479] Re: No text visible after recent updates in Raring

2013-05-23 Thread Nigel Cundy
I've managed to apply the patch in the fedora bug report, and it seems
to work (atleast for me), which was a relief since xiphos just isn't the
same.

Save the attachment, then run
tar -xvzf patch.tar.gz
chmod u+x patch.sh
cat patch.sh
./patch.sh

This will install the various dependencies required to build it --
hopefully I have them all, and build and install the new version

The tarball also contains the output of diff describing the change made to the
source, and the modified source file
bibletime-2.9.1/src/frontend/display/bthtmlreaddisplay.cpp

** Attachment added: The corrected code and a script to build the working
version

[Bug 819676] Re: Missing required argument to Append command

2011-08-02 Thread Nigel Cundy
I have a similar problem (on 11.04, KDE updated through the backport
PPA). It also devoured my emails. When I turned on the spam/anti-virus
filters, it deleted them from the IMAP server (my email provider is
GMX), ran the checks, then tried to upload them back to the server and I
got a similar message; could not upload the message ... unexpected
end of data. The net result was that the email was deleted, and was
not present either on my computer or the server. I lost a few days of
emails, until I found a work-around (firstly using thunderbird to read
email, then switching off the spam/anti-virus filters on kmail).

[Bug 367535] [NEW] [Jaunty] k3b in gnome fails to burn audio CD reporting I/O error

I run a jaunty system which I dist-upgraded from Intrepid. I ran k3b in
Intrepid without any problems.

I tried burning an audio CD in Gnome earlier today (having failed with
Brasero, which I'm still investigating).
K3B reported an I/O error (your disk is probably full) when I clicked on
`burn,' without starting the burning process. After a little experimentation, I
fixed the problem with

mkdir /tmp/kde-`whoami`

and was able to burn my CD. If k3b requires this temporary directory,
then it should be created at some point as the application is started.

[Bug 282556] Re: [Intrepid] Kubuntu: New device notifier does not recognise digital camera

2009-03-03 Thread Nigel Cundy
I'm running KDE 4.2 on Intrepid via the Backports/ppa's (I'm not sure
which, I have both repositories enabled). The last time I used my
camera, which was after 4.2 final came out, I was asked whether I wanted
to download the photos with digikam (I'm also asked this whatever media
I insert, which is somewhat annoying). However, there still seemed to be
no way to unmount the camera via plasma after I had downloaded the
photos (the eject button didn't appear in the new device notifier,
neither could I unmount the device in Dolphin). As before, I had to use
a GNOME application. I don't plan to upgrade to jaunty until after the
beta is released, and I'll try to remember to check this bug again then.

[Bug 291074] Re: memory leak in Network Manager Intrepid

2008-12-17 Thread Nigel Cundy
I only see this every few days or so, and it only comes on one
particular network. My guess is that Network Manager encounters a glitch
in the network of some description, exits from its main routine without
freeing some memory, goes into the error handling routine, prints a
message to say there was a problem to the syslog, then returns to its
main routine, encounters the glitch again, and so on, printing about 100
000 syslog errors until I notice the problem and kill it. I had a quick
look at the source code a few weeks ago, without making much progress
(because a) I'm not familiar with certain libraries used, and b) I'm not
a very good programmer c) I haven't had any time to study this in
detail), but I did notice that the error handling routine in Network
Manager was the following:

static void
nm_error_monitoring_device_link_state (NMNetlinkMonitor *monitor,

GError *error,

gpointer user_data)
{
/* FIXME: Try to handle the error instead of just printing it. */
nm_warning (error monitoring wired ethernet link state: %s\n,
error-message);
}

Which doesn't look very good. Even asking it to sleep for a few seconds
here, giving the network time to recover from whatever its problem was,
would probably stop it getting too badly out of control (although it
would obviously be best to find and fix the memory leak).

As a workaround, I have implemented the following script and set it as a cron
job to run every 5 minutes:

put the following into /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh:

#!/bin/sh
#script to kill NetworkManager if it gets too resource hungry
#check how much percentage memory nm is using, put it into x
x=`ps -e -o pmem -o comm | grep NetworkManager | awk '{printf(%d\n,$1)}' `
#echo $x | awk '{printf(%d\n,$1)}'
#if nm is using more than 5% of the memory, kill and restart it
if(test `echo $x | awk '{printf(%d\n,$1)}'` -ge 5); then
echo `date`:NetworkManager.sh: I'm about to kill NetworkManager pmem =
$x | logger
killall -9 NetworkManager
sleep 10
NetworkManager
fi

___

Then using sudo crontab -u root -e insert the following into the crontab
02 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
07 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
12 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
17 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
22 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
27 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
32 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
37 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
42 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
47 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
52 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh
57 * * * * /usr/sbin/NetworkManager.sh

It's not at all elegant, but it seems to work.

[Bug 291074] [NEW] memory leak in Network Manager Intrepid

2008-10-30 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I don't know if this is the original problem, but I'm also suffering from a
network manager memory leak on occasion. It's happened 4 times now in the past
week and a half (in Intrepid), just using a wired connection and running KDE.
Unless I catch it (which I haven't always done), It very rapidly uses up all my
memory and swap leaving my system in a completely unresponsive and unusable
state within a couple of minutes if I don't catch it. This is my syslog from
today; I killed Network Manager at around 12:08 and haven't yet restarted it.
Network Manager is producing output such as
Oct 30 12:02:17 Bodley3 NetworkManager: WARN
nm_error_monitoring_device_link_state(): error monitoring wired ethernet link
state: error occurred while waiting for data on socket
Oct 30 12:02:48 Bodley3 last message repeated 517444 times
while the memory is growing.

I just had to change my IMAP password on the remote server. When I did so, I

[Bug 282556] [NEW] [Intrepid] Kubuntu: New device notifier does not recognise digital camera

2008-10-13 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libplasma2

I'm using kubuntu intrepid with KDE 4.1.2

I tried importing photos from two canon cameras (Pwoershot S1); however
they were not detected by the new device notifier. I was able to import
the photos easily using dolphin or F-Spot (presumably digikam would also
work but that somehow got uninstalled when I upgraded from Hardy remix
to intrepid). However, it would be better for a newcomer if it was more
obvious how to access the camera (a popup saying open camera in Dolphin
would be great), and secondly once I had mounted the volume, there was
no obvious way to unmount it in KDE: in the end, I used nautilus.

[Bug 276236] [NEW] [Intrepid] ark fails to open .gz file

2008-09-30 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeutils

Kubuntu Intrepid, latest updates

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

sudo dpkg -l | grep kdeutils
ii kdeutils 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1
general-purpose utilities from the official KDE 4 release

sudo dpkg -l | grep konqueror
ii konqueror 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1
KDE 4's advanced file manager, web browser and

Steps to reproduce:
Open this page in konqueror
click on the attached .txt.gz file, and, as suggested by the browser, open it
in ark
What should happen: I see the name of the file, and am able to view it in my
favourite text editor
what happens: ark opens, but there is nothing listed in the window
Also saving the file, and trying to open it with ark from the command line or
file menu fails.
Saving the file and ungzip-ing it from the command line works fine, so it's not
a problem with the file.
If ark isn't the utility to view .gz files, then it shouldn't be called by
konqueror.

I attach the file I haven't been able to open.

[Bug 195393] [NEW] nautilus crashing opening desktop: glibc detected in munmap_chunk()

2008-02-25 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm running hardy on a Dell Inspiron. I was running xfce for a while,
but have gone back to gnome; since then I have been having this problem.
I don't get any Desktop icons.

When I open nautilus from the command line, it crashes immediately. when
I use gnome-open file://~ it opens OK, but crashes when I try to examine
the Desktop. I'm not getting any apport errors. I attach the backtrace
I get from the command line for both types of crash.

The crucial line seems to be
** (nautilus:19307): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported
*** glibc detected *** nautilus: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x081dcac4 ***

This happens in both compiz and metacity

There is no .crash file. There is a core dump, which I would gladly
attach if I could find it.

[Bug 195393] Re: nautilus crashing opening desktop: glibc detected in munmap_chunk()

2008-02-25 Thread Nigel Cundy
I can add more information, which might allow others to duplicate the
crash. I had a .desktop file in ~/Desktop (left over from some third
party software installation) which was created by root and which I had
permission neither to read nor write. Removing the file or changing the
permissions stopped nautilus crashing.

2008-02-25 Thread Nigel Cundy
Possibly this is a duplicate of #172916; the same result obtained in a
different way. I attach a new backtrace with nautilus-dbgsym
libglib2.0-0-dbgsym libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym libgnomevfs2-0-dbg and
libgnomeui-0-dbgsym installed; but still there are some debug packages
missing.

[Bug 147018] Re: Firefox drag and drop causes system freeze with reflection plugin

2008-02-20 Thread Nigel Cundy
I'm typing this from hardy (though I compiled and installed my own
version of compiz, since I wanted some of the unsupported plugins, so I
can't say for certain that its working with the ubuntu compiz). I'm not
observing the problem in firefox-3.0. firefox 2 was removed from my
system in an earlier update.

I can't recall in detail, but I never had any problems with the sound on
this machine either with feisty or gutsy; so I would not have changed

[Bug 189056] [NEW] Update tool failed to upgrade 915resolution

2008-02-04 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Upgrading from gutsy to hardy alpha 4 on a Dell inspiron; the intel
video card with i810 driver needs the package 915resolution to display
the correct 1200x800 resolution. I had the package installed correctly
on gutsy (although it was not part of the default system which came with
Dell); it did not install during my upgrade, and I had to reinstall the
package. Not serious, but still an inconvenience.

[Bug 189060] [NEW] $HOME/.pulse and $HOME/.pulse-cookie have incorrect permissions after upgrade from gutsy to hardy alpha 4

2008-02-04 Thread Nigel Cundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

After an upgrade from gutsy to hardy alpha 4 using update-manager -d,
the sound didn't work properly, due to bad permissions in $HOME/.pulse
and $HOME/.pulse-cookie

I saw this:

%ls -l /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie
-rw--- 1 root root 256 2008-02-04 18:34 /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie

After
%chown cundy:cundy /home/cundy/.pulse-cookie

I got

%pulseaudio
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0

I fixed it with

chown cundy:cundy /home/cundy/.pulse

and then sound started to work.

The permissions need to be fixed in whichever one of the pulseaudio
packages is relevant.

[Bug 147018] Re: [gutsy] Firefox drag and drop causes system freeze

this. When I switch off reflection, everything seems to work. When I
switch it back on again, the system freezes again.

Neither of those work for me (admittedly with a different Toshiba) -
both alsamixer and /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 give me HDA ATI SB and Generic

I need to check

cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
to find the Realtek ALC861

Sound still not working with the -15 kernel - I have to use the -12

[Bug 89527] Re: no sound on feisty - Realtek ALC861

2007-04-03 Thread Nigel Cundy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88400 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88400

There is a fix mentioned in bug #88400 which works for me; at least I have
sound. Add
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to the end of your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

then if you don't already have them install linux-
image-2.6.20-12-generic and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-12 (I
installed from the beta cd, which came with this, they might not be on
the repository, when you would have to hunt around to find them; the fix
doesn't work with the -13 Kernel). Then boot into the -12 Kernel
(adjusting /boot/grub/menu.list to do it automatically if it works),
adjust the mixers, and if you are lucky, you will have sound.

It's not pretty, but it's better than nothing until Daniel T Chen
manages to fix this.

[Bug 96238] Re: missing beryl-xgl causes issues for xgl users

2007-03-26 Thread Nigel Cundy
ATI radeon XPRESS 200M, fglrx driver; feisty; XGL

I was running beryl from ubuntu.beryl-project.org; however I have to use
the beryl-xgl binary provided by the 3rd-party repository maintainers
rather than beryl. This morning, I upgraded to the new packages provided
in universe, and I get an error

beryl: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
beryl: Using non-tfp mode
beryl: GLX_SGIX_fbconfig is missing
beryl: Failed to manage screen: 0
beryl: No manageable screens found on display :1.0

which is the same error I got when running beryl rather than beryl-xgl
from the old repositories. I've had to revert back to an old version on
ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ to get beryl working again.

[Bug 88400] Re: [Feisty] Sound card (HDA) no more detected after switching from -8 to -9

2007-03-19 Thread Nigel Cundy
I can also report that it's still not working with 11. One thing I did
notice is that amixer is not trying to configure my Realtek ALC861 but
Generic 11c1 Si3054, which I think (I could well be mistaken) is my
modem. I don't know anything about sound in linux, so apologies if
that's normal.

I attach
cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
cat /proc/asound/pcm
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#3
lspci -vvn

I haven't yet tried modprobing with stack3
