[Bug 627990] Re: Superkb fails to start in startup
If you start X by calling startx you might want to try $HOME/.xinitrc (note the dot before xinitrc). If you start X by logging in using GDM or any other display manager (the simple graphical login screen) you might want to try $HOME/.xsession (also, dot-xsession). This one I have not tested yet myself. Both files should have the eXecute bit set (chmod +x $HOME/.whatever) Make sure the script is actually being run: use something like touch file inside the script and check if file gets created when starting your session. This should allow you to execute any command right after X or the DE has been initialized. If this doesn't work, please report it here. I'm thinking on a way to add a delay to Superkb initalization if getting keybord geometry fails and retry. You need to issue killall superkb and run it again to make it see the change. Once you make it work, fix the setting according to your distribution instructions before loading Superkb. [Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / real trash on IMAP server
[off-topic, since it this is more of a support response] John Sullivan and others: When I used Evolution, I used search folders. I had a special search folder for the unread e-mails. When the e-mail was irrelevant, I just marked it as read using the keyboard shortcut. I think it was Ctrl+J. As an added advantage, the search folder would also filter a lot of unimportant e-mails (like subscriptions). It didn't take much to set up, and it is a set-and-forget solution. That way, the message is not deleted. It is still kept in a folder, even if it is the Inbox itself, it is better than deleting it, and if you use IMAP it will still appear in your webmail. [Bug 355155] Re: Clocksource tsc unstable leads to lockups in Ubuntu Jaunty
At KeithR and everybody else: It really looks like this bug report is actually a multiple-cause, similar-symptom report, which leads to mixed comments. This makes it impossible for the devs to track all the possible causes, as those have to be pinpointed and fixed one by one. I am too for everybody opening their own bug report. Having multiple bugs mixed in the same report is useless for the developers. It is actually more useful to mark multiple bugs as duplicates of one another; this way, different causes would still be tracked separately. For instance, my crash-like problem turned out to be an multiple-minutes freeze but my system eventually came back always. I solved it by using 2.6.29 from mainline. [Bug 384884] [NEW] Desktop temporarily freezes
Public bug reported: The desktop is constantly freezing. I haven't pinpointed the problem yet. It may happen any moment for no apparent reason. I haven't found a way to reproduce the problem yet. It is very weird. Some apps freeze before others, but it is different each time. For example the system is frozen as I'm typing this. I can tell because the system monitor applet is not scrolling. The clock and link-monitor-applet is updating, though. Other than this window, no other windows are responding. I *can* switch to other workspaces, but windows don't repaint except this one. Sometimes it looks like a soft lockup. I read about other bug reports, and, some don't fit because my system does NOT have an ext4 partition and not using an Intel graphics card. I am NOT using Compiz. I am using the open source ATI driver, though. I opened a different report because I haven't seem any that describes unfreezeng after 5 minutes. Though it unfreezes, it takes so long that it appears that a hard reset is the only way. So it *may* be a duplicate of another bug. There are some constants: 1. After 5 to 15 minutes, the system unfreezes. Otherwise, it looks like it's locked (except that mouse moves). 2. While the system is frozen, you can't use CTRL+ALT+Fx switch to the tty. 3. CPU is not busy. It is 99% idle, as usual. 4. RAM looks normal. 5. Keyboard and mouse events don't get lost. 6. Network looks normal. I can SSH to the host. I put a laptop in between to monitor the network traffice (as maybe a DNS request was blocking some critical system component) but everything came out normal. 7. Nothing goes in the logs during the freeze (I put some tails -f to logs from Xorg, messages, debug and a watch to dmesg and it didn't show anything). Sometimes a Resetting GPU comes up in the logs, but I think this is a consequence (of the system being unresponsive) rather than the cause. I made the following tests in order to try to isolate the problem, but the system didn't freeze: 1. find / 2. 2 x burnP6 3. 3 x burnP6 + 2 x find / 4. swapoff -a; swapon -a, asuming (swap_usage free RAM + disk_buffers). 5. Loade 15 gnome-terminals with full scrollback buffers (~60 MB each) and making all of them read a big log file at the same time. However, I found that CPU never went past 25% in a quad-core. I assumed all of them used the same core, so I loaded a couple of xterms too besides the gnome-terminals and still it didn't go over 25%. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Desktop temporarily freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/384884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 376168] Re: Annoying freeze of some apps (gnome-terminal, xchat, audacious..)
I'm experiencing the same problem, if not similar enough: suddenly, most applications freeze for a couple of minutes and then unfreeze. dmesg doesn't show any messages for the moment of the problem. My system is fully updated. The PC is new, so I haven't run any previous version of Ubuntu on it. Let me describe three instances of the problem. Instance 1: Some applications froze. Mouse is NOT frozen, keyboard is NOT frozen. System monitor app stopped updating. A terminal still responds. I was trying to kill pulseaudio when gnome-terminal froze after a tab completion, right after hitting tab but before the beep or the actual completion occurred. Workspace switcher didn't freeze, some applications repaint others don't. Found another terminal and hitting tab froze it too. Eventually, my PC was unusable, and eventually, applications unfroze. I couldn't kill pulseaudio. Instance 2: A terminal still responds, I tried attaching strace to the pulseaudio process with no luck. top continued running. Pulseaudio was taking a constant 3% of a CPU, which seem pretty high to me. I have killed pulseaudio and the terminal froze. Eventually, they all unfroze. I killed pulseaudio. Instance 3: As I'm writing this (under Opera), my System Monitor applet stopped updating. I have a bunch of Link Monitor applets too, and they seem to be updating correctly. The workspace switcher (with 3D effects diabled) is still working. It lasted about 30 seconds. I didn't try other applications this time. Now it is updating again. [Bug 300017] Re: Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match
I fail to see how enabling the menus unconditionally and showing an error if gvfs fails to create a folder after the user requested it would lead to a nautilus breakage. More over, Nautilus is already broken by disallowing a permitted user to create a file or folder. Looks to me that ssh is only guilty for not providing a way of detecting session permissions, and that's one part of the issue and should be addressed separately. Given this problem with ssh, constraining the user for creating any file or folder (or pasting) if he actually is allowed to do so sure is a Nautilus or gvfs bug. I would expect this bug to be either left as new in case a fix is released by other means, or to be marked as triaged and wait for a developer that wants to pick it up, mark it as wontfix or redirected/reassigned to a more proper package. [Bug 301792] [NEW] GNOME window selector doesn't group windows by desktop when visual effects are in use.
Public bug reported: When visual effects are disabled, and you have many workspaces, the GNOME Window Selector applet will show the list of windows in all workspaces grouped by workspace, with the workspace name at the beginning of each group. This is great. However, when visual effects are enabled, and you have many workspaces, the GNOME Window Selector applet will show the list of all windows in all workspaces, without this useful grouping. GNOME Window Selector applet should behave the same in both scenarios. [Bug 300017] [NEW] Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match
Public bug reported: If you connect to a remote SFTP folder, the UID and GID is interpreted using the local users and groups database. This makes the Create Folder and Create Document options to be greyed out. I'm aware of bugs like 229270 and 9252, but I am reporting this as a separate issue because it is not the same to display ownerships than to prevent the user from doing working. If SFTP permissions are known to be misinterpreted, just don't make the Create Folder / Create Document / Paste menu items availability depend on those while the bug is being fixed. I'm sure I do have correct permissions: if I log in to the SSH server and cd to the path, creating the folder through the shell works. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Create folder is greyed out on SFTP remote folders when UID/GID doesn't match https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300017 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well, in my previous comment I was actually trying to make it clearer, using a side to side comparison, that this is a bug, not a user mistake. [Bug 228857] Re: evolution follow up flagged search folder returns no result
The flagged you say with the exclamation point is the important mark. You can search for these messages with Status - is - important. They are clearly different things since you may want to mark something unimportant for follow up (it may be urgent but not important). Here is the wording comparison for the two features in different contexts: Column names: flagged and flag status. Search folder names: status - is - important and follow up - is flagged. [Bug 208030] [NEW] TrueType fonts don't appear in xfontsel.
Public bug reported: Just upgraded to Hardy Heron Beta 1 and found a third-party app broken. The cause was that the font was not loaded. [Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count
Another idea is to warn the user that he is in the 25..29th mount after he logs in and offer a read-only, valid check *whenever the user wants but before the 30th mount*. And, if the check proves the disk to need r/w to fix something, to provide an option to schedule the check for the next reboot. This could be done in a system notification bubble, a la your system needs a restart to be fully upgraded with a button for the read-only check and a checkbox for the schedule r/w check for the next reboot.
