[Bug 1743094] Re: [regression] hibernation (freezes on resume) since 4.13.0-25.29

2018-02-07 Thread Oliver R.
I must correct my post #77: The X200 now shows the bug, but differently.
There is no blank screen, but the last screen before hibernation is
visible. Other than that, the system is absolutely frozen as in the
other cases. So this is an example of a pre-i3 processor with the bug
being present.

[Bug 1743094] Re: [regression] hibernation (freezes on resume) since 4.13.0-25.29

2018-02-06 Thread Oliver R.
The issue is also not present on my ThinkPad X300 with an Intel(R)
Core(TM)2 Duo CPU L7100 @ 1.20GHz.

Has anyone found the bug being present on a processor older than i3? If
I haven't missed anything, all cases reported here have i3, i5, or i7.

[Bug 1743094] Re: [regression] hibernation (freezes on resume) since 4.13.0-25.29

2018-02-06 Thread Oliver R.
The issue is not present on my ThinkPad X200, i.e. resume from hibernate
works with kernel 4.13.0-32.

The X200 runs a clone of the Mint 18.3 installation of my T430s, which
shows the issue as reported in comment #73 (where I erroneously wrote it
was a T420).

The T430s has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz,
the X200 an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz.

Is there any more useful information I can bring?

Is there a chance it will find its way into the repository? What is the

[Bug 1669293] [NEW] udev/udisks automount waits for 5 seconds

2017-03-02 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04, when plugging in a USB pen drive, there is a
lag of 5 or 6 seconds between the kernel detecting the device and
udev/udisks mounting it. If there are more than one partition on the
drive, each partition takes another 5 or 6 seconds. In 12.04 the
automounting started immediately. I tested this with several USB pen
drives and several computers.

I consider this a regression (somewhere between 12.04 and 14.04).

What is the purpose of this delay?

How can I change it?

because it's not found. It seems that LO takes the part after the comma,
not before. This seems to be a regression compared to LO 4.x where
everything was as expected.

[Bug 1641608] [NEW] wmctrl -a or -R does not give focus to window if mouse is outside window

2016-11-14 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

wmctrl 1.07 running on Linux Mint 18 Xfce (Ubuntu 16.04) with Xfce
4.12.1-2

wmctrl -a WindowName
raises the window, but does not give focus if the mouse pointer is outside the
window area. Same with -R.

Xfce is configured to give focus to the window under the mouse pointer:
xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/click_to_focus -s false
But in the Xfce version shipped with Linux Mint 13 Xfce, wmctrl gave the focus
to the window with WindowName anyway.

[Bug 888434] Re: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager calls the wrong method

2015-01-11 Thread Oliver R.
I attached a modified version of 55NetworkManager that simply calls
"stop network-manager" and "start network-manager", respectively. This
works for me, i.e. I have a working network connection after resume,
which I hadn't before (Mint 13 Xfce, kernel 3.13.0-43-generic, ThinkPad
R500).

Please comment if this is a sensible solution – or post a correct
version using dbus_send.

The bug seems to be still present in version 1.4.1-9fix.ubuntu12.04

Is anyone able to fix this? Is it fixed in future versions?

[Bug 1081019] Re: Benchmark for disks always fails on 32 bit systems

Affects me too with a HITACHI 120GB HDD (HTS542512K9SA00). I'm running
a 32-bit Linux Mint 17 Xfce on a ThinkPad T61.

Will the patch be included in the next updates?

[Bug 1395175] [NEW] wxMaxima files need their own mime-type and file extensions association

2014-11-21 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

For example, wxm files are identified by the "file" command as "ASCII C program
text".
So do file managers (e.g., dolphin, thunar).
As a consequence, clicking on wxMaxima documents does not open wxMaxima.

Some hints to solve this problem for "file" (magic) are given in:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/56582/how-to-make-difference-between-wxm-wxmaxima-and-c-files-in-linux-mint

But furthermore, there should be mime-types declared and associated with
wxMaxima. So far one gets:
$ xdg-mime query filetype some_filename.wxm
text/x-csrc

[Bug 1020161] [NEW] Performance regression: okular now takes 3x longer to open large PDF documents

2012-07-02 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

okular /usr/share/doc/texmf/pgf/pgfmanual.pdf.gz # from package pgf
takes about 100s on a slow machine (700MHz PIII, 512MB RAM).

This used to be about 30s with okular from Kubuntu 9.04:
Qt: 4.8.1
KDE: 4.8.3 (4.8.3)
Okular: 0.8.2

The factor is roughly the same on a Celeron 3GHz (1GB RAM). It does not
seem to be a memory/swap problem.

[Bug 1007582] [NEW] PIII Coppermine: speedstep does not work

2012-06-01 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

On my old laptop HP Omnibook 500 with a PIII Coppermine 700 MHz,
speedstep does nor work in Linux (it does well in Windows 2000). If I
boot the system with AC power, it always runs at high speed (even if the
AC cable is removed later), otherwise always at low speed.

[Bug 1007320] [NEW] some keyboard shortcuts in menus are incorrect

2012-06-01 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

This might only be a problem of the German translation: Some keyboard
shortcuts in Writer (e.g., Control-H) have a different function than
indicated in the menus (indicated: search/replace; function:
superscript). It seems that the shortcuts indicated in the menus are not
representing the actual definitions the user may change in the options
dialog.

[Bug 1006348] Re: ERR: Can only have 128 commands for pre, post, and cell commands.

2012-05-30 Thread Oliver R.
And here is my "corrected" version.

So one may look for differences between the two files. Some minor
differences might be due to the fact that my version was originally
based on an older version of kmediafactory.

[Bug 1006348] [NEW] ERR: Can only have 128 commands for pre, post, and cell commands.

2012-05-30 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

As seems to be known for a long time, one gets an error message from dvdauthor
for projects that exceed a certain number of VOB files:
ERR: Can only have 128 commands for pre, post, and cell commands.

The problem is that in the first menu pgc ALL "jump titleset NN menu"
commands are found.

I propose a solution, which I practice manually for some years now, but
which shouldn't be too difficult to implement. Namely, I move most of
the "jump titleset NN menu" commands from the Main_1.mpg menu pgc
section to the other Main_NN.mpg sections. Main_1 gets the jumps from 1
to 7, Main_2 from 8 to 13, Main_3 from 14 to 19, and so on.
Accordingly, one has to make additional changes, e.g. in the "post"
sections of each titleset (replace "menu 1" by the appropriate other
menu).

[Bug 999276] [NEW] progress window: text shortened and idle time added

2012-05-14 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

Two small things in the "progress window" when burning a CD/DVD:

1. The text showing elapsed and remaining time is truncated so the
remaining time is not visible.

2. K3B counts idle time (waiting for media), which is misleading.

[Bug 996939] [NEW] NetworkManager after resume from suspend/hibernate should revert to last (not default) connection

2012-05-09 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

I have two wired connections: one with a static IP (home) and one with
DHCP (work). The static connection is my default, the "automatically
connect" box is checked. After resume from suspend/hibernate
NetworkManager always establishes the default connection, even if the
DHCP connection was active before. This means that, at work, I have to
switch the connections after every suspend/resume.

I would be desirable that NetworkManager re-establishes the last
connection - even if this is different from the default one.

[Bug 995913] Re: White desktop, no launcher icons

2012-05-07 Thread Oliver R.
After deinstalling xserver-xorg-video-nouveau everything works as
expected. So it seems to be a problem of the interaction of the driver
with the graphics card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation NV31
[GeForce FX 5600] [10de:0312] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I changed the target of this bug accrodingly.

Since it's a friend's computer, I won't be able to do more testing on
this.

[Bug 995913] [NEW] White desktop, no launcher icons

2012-05-07 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from CD I experience the
behavior described in bug #902670:

The main desktop area is dead white. No display of anything except the
pointer cursor.

The launcher bar shows in some kind of purple, but without icons.
Hovering the mouse over the launcher bar flashes 'tooltip' descriptions
of what should be there. These extend over the white desktop.

The top 'tray' bar shows with its proper icons.

Pressing Alt-F2, for example, leads to a window over the white desktop
area.

Immediately after logging in, I can see the correct background, but then
it's immediately covered with the white block.

I installed linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic-
pae_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb and linux-
headers-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic-
pae_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb. And in a first test I could
not reproduce the bug, so maybe it's fixed.

Do you still need the results following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ?

If two little off-topic questions in this context are allowed:
1) During installation of the headers package, there was an error compiling the
virtualbox modules. Do you have a quick answer how I can compile the modules?
2) The grub2 menu entry for the "old" kernel has gone, so if anything goes
wrong with the upstream kernel, that could be inconvenient. Is there an easy
way to get the menu entry back?

Thanks!

[Bug 992459] Re: some fonts corrupted after resume from hibernate

2012-05-02 Thread Oliver R.
Thanks, Christopher! Before following your suggestions, I did some
more testing to be able to reproduce the bug. Here are the puzzling
results:

In one user account (the user created during installation, id 1000,
almost no changes to the defaults), I can invoke the bug, whereas in my
main account (id 501 for historical reasons) I can't - even if I use the
Ubuntu font and let firefox allow webpages to use their own fonts!

If I have user 501 in an X session on tty7 and 1000 another one on tty8,
then the bug is invokable and visible in both sessions. Sometimes,
however, when switching from tty8 to tty7, I can see the "distortions"
for a moment before everything looks normal agagin. But most of the
time both users are affected.

Now I looked for differences between the two users. I copied the home
directory of 501 to 1000 and changed the owner to 1000. Still 1000
showed the bug.

[Bug 992459] [NEW] some fonts corrupted after resume from hibernate

2012-05-01 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

Similar to bug #659434, I experience that some fonts get corrupted after
resume from hibernate. So far I saw this affect firefox (menu and
content) and emacs (menu).

As a work-around I followed the hints in

to use their own fonts) and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/659434/comments/39

[Bug 659434] Re: Font/image corruption after resume from hibernate

2012-04-29 Thread Oliver R.
I followed inoxi's hint and changed all fonts from Ubuntu to Verdana,
which seems to work.

But what's so special about the Ubuntu font? Are there other fonts that
show the same problem?

[Bug 659434] Re: Font/image corruption after resume from hibernate

2012-04-29 Thread Oliver R.
The problem is also present in 3.2.0-24-generic-pae after a clean
install of 12.04. So far I have seen it in firefox (changed the font
there) and emacs (no solution yet). It's an Intel board (kernel module
i915).

Is any more information helpful?

[Bug 310955] Re: s2disk resume images not recognized

2009-10-02 Thread Oliver R.
I upgraded to 2.6.28-15-generic.
The message "kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot..." still appears, but
the image is loaded anyway.
Sometimes the resume process completes successfully, sometimes it doesn't - but
that's a different story/bug.

Can this bug be closed then?

[Bug 310955] Re: s2disk resume images not recognized

Just found this line in the man page for s2disk: "You will need to set
up an initramfs which calls the resume program for this to work." So
maybe the initrd wasn't set up correctly?

[Bug 440165] [NEW] system hangs after resume from hibernate on a HP OmniBook 500

2009-10-01 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

pm-utils 1.2.2.4-0ubuntu4
2.6.28-11-generic i686
Ubuntu 9.04
i386

When I call pm-hibernate from the command-line or initiate the hibernation in
any other way, I get the following result:
The hibernation process goes through as expected.
The resume process seems to finish as expected, too, but then I observe the
following:
The CPU fan runs high and the HDD LED turns off.
I can switch between text consoles Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F6, which appear
correctly.
No tasks seem to run (I left a top running before hibernating, which seems
frozen after resume).
In consoles, normal keystrokes have no effect except Ctrl-A through Ctrl-Z and
so on, which echo on the screen but have no other effect.
CAPS lock reacts as expected.
When I switch to the X console with Ctrl-Alt-F7, the kernel seems to hang (no
CAPS lock reaction, no more console switching).
Stopping kdm before hibernating does not change anything (besides Ctrl-Alt-F7
does not hang the kernel).

This bug might be related to #368955, #350919, #246172.

Switching to uswsusp does not work either, see #310955.

[Bug 310955] Re: s2disk resume images not recognized

2009-10-01 Thread Oliver R.
I have the same problem with a 2.6.28-11-generic kernel on a HP OmniBook
500 running kubuntu 9.04.

Maybe the following discussion is helpful to someone:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/s2disk-and-resume-with-kernel-2.6.19-510349/
Possibly the kernel lacks some compile-time options?

[Bug 277504] [NEW] texlive-latex-recommended should contain soulutf8

2008-10-03 Thread Oliver R.
Public bug reported:

texlive-latex-recommended (or some other appropriate package) should contain
soulutf8, infwarerr and etexcmds from the oberdiek bundle:
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/oberdiek/
Maybe even all files from this bundle should be included?
soulutf8 allows for UTF-8 encoded characters in the 'soul' style file.

[Bug 208786] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] openoffice.org no longer greys out save button after saving as it should

2008-09-29 Thread Oliver R.
I also vote for Fevrin's suggestion of implementing an option to choose
one's preferred behavior. There seem to be arguments for both (see
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/item/8487 ), so why not let people choose?
I, personally, like the original "grey out" behavior better, since this
little asterisk needs to be looked for whereas a greyed out button is an
"eye catcher". And, if someone needs to write over an existing
document, one can use the "save as" button.
