[Bug 1943568] Re: slack-desktop no longer runs

2021-09-29 Thread Peter de Kraker
Having the same issue with Slack and VSCode. All fail to startup with
the same GPU error message. Is there a link to the bug that impacts all
Electron apps? Seems pretty severe!

[Bug 1900642] Re: sssd won't start

2020-10-22 Thread Peter de Kraker
I upgraded from 20.04 to 20.10 and now my boot screen is littered with
SSSD error messages. I don't even know what it is ;). Anyway, it would
be preferrable to not having these messages if not needed.

I don't see any issues in that list.

I remember vaguely that I installed a self built Samba back then to use
the OSX timemachine support. Maybe that is conflicting/still exists
somewhere.

I did ran testparm myself, and got no issues.

Thanks for getting back to me!

2020-05-04 Thread Peter de Kraker
Ok, I found a install in /usr/lib and the source package in my home's
tmp dir. I ran a make uninstall, and that removed everything samba
related from /usr. I now can get past the error. Still some issues, but
those seem to be not related to the Ubuntu package itself.

Thanks!

[Bug 1876622] [NEW] Can't upgrade samba-common-bin: undefined symbol: smb_strtoul

2020-05-03 Thread Peter de Kraker
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my 18.04 system to 20.04 a week ago. Today I did a apt-get
dist-upgrade and new Samba version where there, and I tried upgrading. However,
I got the following error:

Setting up samba-common-bin (2:4.11.6+dfsg-0ubuntu1.1) ...

No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup
error from a previous failure.
  Errors were encountered while processing:

It seems to fail at testparm of smb.conf, so I reverted that one temporarily to
the standard smb.conf, not my own customized one. Still it always fails.
I removed all samba and smb packages, and reinstalled, same issue.

[Bug 1867361] Re: Nvidia graphics fail to start on 20.04

2020-04-03 Thread Peter de Kraker
Ok, I tried a fresh install of the just released Ubuntu 20.04 beta. I
formatted everything, installed through the desktop GUI with option to
install nvidia drivers immediately. All went well, rebooting, same
issue.(!) Only shows purple screen with user login, that does not do
anything. This is a vanilla install, immediately fails.

Pressing CTRL F7 shows me sometimes the loaded desktop, while at the
same time showing some command line messages. I can't do anything and it
doesnt update when moving mouse or so.

So yeah, I think this is a timing issue or so? I have quite a beefed up
system. Still, this seems a major bug for a beta release (!)

[Bug 1867361] Re: Nvidia graphics fail to start on 20.04

2020-03-29 Thread Peter de Kraker
Since updating from a 20.04 version a month ago, to the one that is now
current, I can't boot anymore. When booting, the splashscreen is shown
shortly, before turning to black, and my monitor shows 'no input'. When
removing nvidia-driver-440 and rebooting, I can boot into Ubuntu without
issues.

I have a GTX 1070, AMD 3600 CPU, 32GB ECC Ram.

Reinstalling nvidia-driver-440 immediately causes failure to boot.

[Bug 1815939] Re: Upgrade to HWE stack fails in make of spl module (zfs)

2019-12-01 Thread Peter de Kraker
Ok, it seems that zfs is just included in the kernel. Also on 18.04 HWE.
I removed zfs-dkms and spl-dkms, and needed to run 'zpool import' after which
my zpool showed up again.

Maybe a good idea to remove those 2 packages while upgrading?

[Bug 1815939] Re: Upgrade to HWE stack fails in make of spl module (zfs)

2019-12-01 Thread Peter de Kraker
I am running into this same error. I have a home server on Ubuntu 18.04
with a raidz2 3 disk ZFS array (not as root filesystem). Today I tried
upgrading to the new HWE kernel, but building failed. It hangs at
'checking spl build directory...'.

There is no 0.7.9 package for ZFS in 18.04. And removing zfs-dkms resulted in
'no datasets available' in 'zfs list' after booting into 5.0.

So, it seems like a no go?

[Bug 1310792] Re: dfree command is not working anymore in samba

2014-05-14 Thread Peter de Kraker
My workaround for now is to allow zfs module access to all users from the zfs
group, instead of only root.
This way the zfs command can be run by by users from that group.

/etc/udev/rules.d/91-zfs-permissions.rules
#Use this to add a group and more permissive permissions for zfs
#so that you don't always need run it as root. beware, users not root
#can do nearly EVERYTHING, including, but not limited to destroying
#volumes and deleting datasets. they CANNOT mount datasets or create new
#volumes, export datasets via NFS, or other things that require root
#permissions outside of ZFS.
ACTION==add, KERNEL==zfs, MODE=0660, GROUP=zfs

Note that you need to add the zfs group and add the users to it. This is
also a bit risky, because every user of that group can now modify zfs
stuff. (But on your own homeserver this is not really a problem)

[Bug 1310792] Re: dfree command is not working anymore in samba

2014-04-22 Thread Peter de Kraker
I did some more digging through the logs, and it turns out that the command is
called, but fails due to not being called as root user.
For access to the zfs stats you need to be root. This worked ok in 13.10, but
it looks like the dfree command is not executed as root user anymore. I would
call this a regression, but maybe this is intentional? Still, it makes my
dfree command useless...

[Bug 1310792] [NEW] dfree command is not working anymore in samba

2014-04-21 Thread Peter de Kraker
Public bug reported:

I have a ZFS On Linux setup as my main backup/fileserver that uses
RaidZ1 (similar to raid 5: 3 disks, 1 parity). Because Linux doesn't
show the free space correctly for the complete disk/mount point, the
disk space indicator on my Windows machine for this share gives the
wrong info. The solution in Samba 3 / Ubuntu 13.10 was to add a dfree
command = scriptname configuration option to smb.cnf that knew how to
figure out the correct disk space/usage. This was all working and the
total disk space was displayed correctly in Windows Explorer on the
client.

However, now after upgrading to 14.04, the diskspace suddenly gets
displayed all wrong again. I checked the script (it worked ok) and even
let it output 0 0 to see if it actually gets called by samba, but
nothing changed on the indicator of my windows machine. I did reboots of
the server, and the client, and nothing changed. I also changed the
dfree command to a invalid scriptname, and moved it from global to a
share section. Nothing worked.

Testparm gives no errors, so it looks like samba somehow just ignores
this parameter. Manpage for smb.conf shows that the dfree command
option is available.

Looks like a regression to me, and is frustrating, because I can't see
how much space I am using on my fileserver.

[Bug 1262797] Re: acer-wmi module hangs laptop for 10 seconds on boot/modprobe

2013-12-20 Thread Peter de Kraker
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I have a Acer Aspire 7740, and noticed after installing that Ubuntu 13.10
(kernel 3.11.0-14) hangs for 10 seconds early in the boot process. It continues
after that.
The screen freezes and the fans start spinning very hard. The last dmesg line
before the pause is a info message about acer-wmi. When modprobing this module
after boot the same symptoms occur. Ubuntu hangs, and reacts normally after 10
seconds. So, clearly something is wrong with acer-wmi. Maybe it should not be
loaded with this laptop version, or it has a bug in it. I will add a dmesg from
a boot with acer-wmi enabled.

- WORKAROUND: I blacklisted acer-wmi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and
- updated initramfs. Now ubuntu boots as it should without hanging. No
- functionality appears to be lost. Bluetooth and wifi work, also the
- volume keys.

[Bug 1262797] Re: [Acer Aspire 7740] acer-wmi module hangs laptop for 10 seconds on boot/modprobe

2013-12-20 Thread Peter de Kraker
Tested on 12.04, and also hangs there BUT I found the 'cause' of it.
When I received this laptop I installed a new half size mini PCIE
wireless card (Intel based) and that seems to cause the hang somehow.
When I remove the wireless card or reinstall the old original one
modprobing acer-wmi finishes immediately and succesfull with no hangs.

I don't know now if this is still a valid bug, since maybe the card is
not fully supported by the laptop (while it works ok besides this
issue).

[Bug 1262797] [NEW] acer-wmi module hangs laptop for 10 seconds on boot/modprobe

2013-12-19 Thread Peter de Kraker
Public bug reported:

I have a Acer Aspire 7740, and noticed after installing that Ubuntu 13.10
(kernel 3.11.0-14) hangs for 10 seconds early in the boot process. It continues
after that.
The screen freezes and the fans start spinning very hard.
The last dmesg line before the pause is a info message about acer-wmi.

I blacklisted acer-wmi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and updated
initramfs. Now ubuntu boots as it should without hanging. No
functionality appears to be lost. Bluetooth and wifi work, also the
volume keys.

When modprobing this module after boot the same symptoms occur. Ubuntu
hangs, and reacts normally after 10 seconds.

So, clearly something is wrong with acer-wmi. Maybe it should not be
loaded with this laptop version, or it has a bug in it.

I will add a dmesg from a boot with acer-wmi enabled.

[Bug 202432] Re: Unable to use anything but usermode networking

2008-05-12 Thread Peter de Kraker
Same here, added myself to the proper groups, but the virtual networks
tab is greyed out in virt-manager, unless I run it with sudo, but then I
can't acces my VM that i created in localhost(User) since with sudo it
connects to localhost(System).

Is it the recommended way of running KVM/QEMU as root?

[Bug 202432] Re: Unable to use anything but usermode networking

I should read better.

virt-manager -c qemu:///system does work, but there should be a GUI
way in virt-manager to connect to there.

[Bug 220314] Re: DNS broken in 32 bit java under 64 bit Heron

2008-05-07 Thread Peter de Kraker
Can this be looked into ? Why is it still incomplete ?

For me the same situation:
Fully updated Hardy and my ia32-sun-java-6 when using Aptana (eclipse) could
not resolve any hostnames until I installed the lib32nss-mdns package.

[Bug 216908] Re: network manager prints errors to console during shutdown

2008-05-06 Thread Peter de Kraker
Pfff this bug is irritating me for at least a year or so? Gutsy had it
always too and it didn't change with hardy.

On every PC I have Ubuntu installed I get those errors. I disabled the
splashscreen, so I always see it when I shutdown. but note: my shutdown
process is not slow or has problems. It only shows these messages.

Main PC has only a NIC, the others have WIFI.

Please let me know what information is needed, I really really like this
bug to dissappear.

[Bug 36625] Re: can't remove nvidia-glx

2008-05-04 Thread Peter de Kraker
I am not experiencing the problem anymore. I checked my current postrm and it
is the same as the current original one, so it looks like it is solved.
So no diff -u.

However, if you still have the old version and thus the problem:
The only thing I did was remove the if [..] fi part that checked for the
lib32/libgl.so file. So that are 4 lines total.

[Bug 222433] [NEW] Firefox always displays a 2 pixel white bar on the left of the screen.

2008-04-26 Thread Peter de Kraker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

The Hardy Firefox has a very frustrating bug: It always displays a very
small white bar on the left of the screen.

The white bar would be expected if you run Firefox in a non-maximized window,
but this is about a fully maximized firefox.
It is very distracting, not necessary and doesn't have any functional reasons
for being there. Even more, it really annoys me when webbrowsing.

See the attached screenshot.

FYI: I have never observed this behaviour in Gutsy's Firefox, and also
not on Firefox 3 in Windows XP.

** Affects: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu)

[Bug 222109] [NEW] [hardy] Fonts are rendered slightly fuzzy and are too thin

2008-04-25 Thread Peter de Kraker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fontconfig

Somehow the font rendering in Hardy makes it hard to read them and
therefore use my PC. Which is very frustrating.

The most noticeable change from 7.10 = 8.04 is that the font thickness has
been decreased too much. However, changing the default font-size to 11, doesn't
give the desired look that 7.10 had. The fonts just stay too thin.
Something that probably goes hand in hand with the thin fonts, is the fact that
they are also partly blurred. This is very noticeable in the gnome-terminal.

I have tried every option in the font menu, all to no avail.

See the screenshot for more details. Especially notice the font-
rendering in the terminal and the gnome-panel menu. It hurts the eyes.

[Bug 36625] Re: can't remove nvidia-glx

2008-04-25 Thread Peter de Kraker
I am having the same error here. This is not fixed in the official hardy
release:
When running sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-glx-new it complains about:
/usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 and won't continue.

I am using hardy 64 bit, and the /usr/lib32 directory doesn't even exist on my
fresh 8.04-release install.
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-glx-new does work, but still the remove
won't function.

[Bug 207783] Re: Hardy kernel fails to boot when the USB controller is enabled (ATA/SATA errors)

2008-03-28 Thread Peter de Kraker
irqpoll did solve the problem, booted up normally, everything was accessible,
though I didn't test everything, will do that this evening.
I have made 3 pictures of the latest part of dmesg with the errors, the only
error that doesn't show up is the error after the whole dmesg, then it
complains that it can't find the root drive. If necessary I can take a picture
of that too.

Main problem looks like a IRQ error, as seen in the first picture.
