[Bug 843377] Re: DRBD Trademark
Hi Kavan, Of course, providing a means for users to access other support resources for a product is an important function of our documentation. This is why we currently provide a link to the project website for DRBD. If the DRBD.org website is soon to be retired, could you please give us the URL for the new location of the project website so we can modify the documentation? I do not see how including trademark information or including a sentence explicitly naming LINBIT as the developers of the software is preferable to providing a link to the project website. If the aim is to provide users with information on how to get further support, file bugs, or submit patches, then surely a direct link to the project website is much more efficient than simply giving them the name of the software developer (plus irrelevant trademark information) and expecting them to search for it? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/843377 Title: DRBD Trademark To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/843377/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 843377] Re: DRBD Trademark
We've discussed the issue of referencing trademarks before. The conclusion, if I remember correctly, was that we're under no legal obligation to include trademark references. Note numerous unreferenced uses of the trademark "Windows" throughout the docs. In this case, I think that including a link to the DRBD website is appropriate (and we already have a link). That website has more information on LINBIT as the developer of DRBD, which users will find if they are interested. I appreciate that the company would like to increase its exposure to potential customers, but I don't think that user documentation is an appropriate forum for that. There are many more companies whose products are referenced in the documentation without trademark information or similar.

[Bug 778289] Re: Help button in Unity default launcher
I think the conclusion with help launchers is that they should be (a) *particularly* easy to discover, to the point of being obvious, but (b) unintrusive, to avoid annoying people who don't want to use them. [Bug 742857] Re: i18n matters ought to be properly documented
Hi Gunnar, Thanks for working on this! We normally target the system help at non-technical end users. In general, these people only look at the help when they have a specific problem. Their aim, we assume, is to fix their problem as quickly as possible and get on with their work, so we don't like to make them read through a lot of text or learn lots of new concepts. These users typically won't understand the concept of environment variables, or even the terminal, so a topic on gettext would not be suitable for them without putting them through a lot of introductory material first (which we don't have). That's my argument for why the document you wrote wouldn't be suitable for direct inclusion in the system help. It would, however, be very suitable for users who want to gain a better understanding of how the i18n infrastructure works (as you said). These people will tend to have more interest in learning concepts, and are likely to be more technically-adept. We normally recommend putting documents for these "technical" users on the Community Help Wiki at help.ubuntu.com. More information on i18n (from a non-technical user's perspective) is needed in the system docs, however. The upstream GNOME desktop help is currently undergoing a massive overhaul, and I'm not sure we have enough suitable i18n material in there at the moment. Would you like to have a look at it and let me know what you think? [Bug 600875] Re: No documentation for using/configuring Unity
This is a difficult one. Unity is a shell - users don't necessarily see it as an application in its own right - so documentation which only covers Unity might seem weird. The Unity docs should probably be part of the desktop help. An "interface tour"-type document might be a useful addition, along with some more specific topics on points which people are likely to get stuck on. A nice way of keeping the Unity docs in their own package would be to transition the system docs to Mallard. It can deal with this use case very gracefully. I think the 2D fallback interface will be a real problem. We could probably rig something up to get Yelp to check an environment variable and switch in appropriate docs, but it would be a lot of work and annoying to maintain. It would be a nightmare for users looking at the help on the web too. Is the fallback interface the same as Unity but minus the effects, or is it completely different? I'd prefer to ignore styling/branding for now, since it can be added in later. Users will forgive crappy-looking docs that are helpful, but they won't forgive shiny docs that are useless. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600875 Title: No documentation for using/configuring Unity -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localisation
Hi guys, Please stick to the HIG with this. Deviating from it will introduce ambiguities when translating the documentation. I should also point out that this isn't a localisation issue, it's a stylistic one. We have this "terse" style in UK English too (newspaper headlines use something similar, for example), and it's perfectly acceptable. It's OK for action labels, like those on buttons or in pop-up menus, to sound disjointed. They're not full sentences; rather they're "headings", so there's no need for them to flow. The role of an action label is to quickly identify a function, not to convey meaning, so there's no need for the wording to sound pleasant. This would be different if we were talking about (e.g.) the explanatory text in a dialog box, though. -- Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localisation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/406626 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 621646] Re: Gwibber notification preferences are confusing
Feedback from the docs team: The proposed change looks much less confusing and we don't have any doc strings/screenshots that depend on it as far as I can tell, so making the modification should be fine. A couple of potential issues: It might not be clear what "Mentions and replies" are to some users (different terms are used on different networks, and novices may not be aware of the concepts), so a good explanatory tooltip should be provided. Something like "Only receive notifications when someone replies to one of your messages or mentions your name" might work. Also (somewhat unrelated to this bug), the "Start service at login" label is quite technical. You, as an upstream, can decide on the approved terminology *now* and we'll just adopt whatever you say. The important thing is that a decision is made. [Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization
Hi folks, This bug devolved into bikeshedding long ago. Consistency is the most important consideration here, not the actual term that's used. It's important that we make a choice and stick to it, ASAP. So, I'm sure that alternative choices like "bin" would be just as good, and I'm sure everyone has a wonderful justification for why their favourite term should be used, but a decision has been made, and the approved term in Ubuntu is now "Rubbish Bin". This term is clearly recognizable to British English speakers (comment #64, thanks for working on this Alan), and if you're really searching for justification then the addition of the word "rubbish" should clarify the meaning of the term to non- British-English speakers (notably, tech support workers). *** Final decision: "Rubbish Bin". *** -- Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/406626 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I think the problem is that no-one feels that they have the authority to make a final decision. A survey would choose for us, but I agree that it's a lot of messing around for little gain. This bug is 44 comments long already. I say that we decide on "rubbish bin" and just leave it at that. This term is clear and unambiguous, and is in common, modern British usage. [Bug 617418] Re: Front page takes ~30 seconds to display
Thanks for reporting this bug. I've spoken to Shaun McCance, the Yelp developer, about this on several occasions. IIRC, Yelp reads pretty much all of the files (XML, XSLT etc.) it might need for a session before it renders the first page. This causes a significant delay between clicking the Help icon and Yelp actually rendering the first page. We could rearrange ubuntu-docs a little and this might help reduce the waiting time, but Yelp would still be the main bottleneck. The speed issue is fixed in Yelp 3 - it's much, much faster. I've been pushing Shaun for a GTK2 version of Yelp 3, since we won't be shipping GTK3 by default with Maverick (AFAIK). He's very busy though, so I don't know if a release will be available in time. (P.S. I think a more useful target would be to have content displayed in ~1sec or less, and Yelp 3 should be able to deliver this. Help browsers need to give a good first impression, since users trust help files so little as it is.) ** Package changed: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) => yelp (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: yelp (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- Front page takes ~30 seconds to display https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/617418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization
Hi Popey, Would you mind organising a survey? It would probably be best to ask a simple, non-leading question, e.g. "What [do|would] you call the place where files go when you delete them?" Non-technical users would be more valuable participants because they're the ones most likely to be affected by a poor choice of terminology. This makes me think that an in-person (rather than web-based) survey would be necessary. We don't need good statistics on this; 15-20 participants would probably be plenty to inform the decision. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. [Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization
Can I push for a decision on this ASAP, please? Not having a consistent naming convention causes problems for people doing user assistance (docs etc.), and this discussion has gone on for far too long. A native British English speaker should make the decision; having a non-native speaker decide (US English or otherwise) is inappropriate. Wow, I can't believe that such a minor bug has generated so many comments. [Bug 394335] Re: Nautilus "Changing Backgrounds" help is tl; dr and doesn't cross-reference desktop background
That would be a good solution to the licensing issue I think. If we rewrite the whole section, I'd like to plan it properly first and collect some user testing data. I'll try to recruit someone to work on it upstream. The only problems I see with that is that we'd have to convert it from DocBook to Mallard in a release cycle or two, and it might look out of place for a while. I understand that you won't see many people looking at the help and experiencing problems, although data on that would be useful if you had it. Rather, I was referring to problems that users experience in general. If lots of them are having the same problem and it's nothing that's going to be fixed in the UI any time soon, then we should provide documentation to help people with the problem. -- Nautilus "Changing Backgrounds" help is tl;dr and doesn't cross-reference desktop background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394335 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide
This seems likely. I'm probably the person from the Doc Team who is most interested in installation, and I've never submitted a patch for it. I can't speak for others, but I've never done this because I'm not interested in the users that this guide is aimed at (and also because contributing upstream like this can be a bit of a hassle sometimes and I'm lazy). I don't think that the installation-guide is a bad document or that it's impossible to understand, although I understand that my comments may have given that impression. It's just that this document is aimed at a very different, far more advanced, user group to the one that I concentrate on. It's also worth noting that, if you have some documentation that you want someone to look at, let us (the Doc Team) know! The amount of documentation that ships with Ubuntu is truly immense, and the Doc Team is small and volunteer-led. We can't keep tabs on all of it ourselves, so we really appreciate it when people let us know if something needs particular attention. -- Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395360 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide
Hi Jonathan, Wow, that's a long post. I apologise in advance for the necessary length of my reply. Also, please understand that I'm replying on behalf of a team of 7 people here, not just myself. I think it might help if I first give you some background on my desire to create a new installation guide. I've been a member of the Ubuntu Documentation team for several years now, and the first work that I performed there was writing the Switching from Windows guide. This is now in need of replacement. My assessment of the state of that guide was that it tried to be all things to all people, and ended up failing to be useful to anyone. (You may have noticed that I'm worried about something similar happening here!) There were no defined user personas, no general aim to the guide, etc., fairly vital ingredients to producing good documentation. You can't just say that "this document is for everyone!"; you have to have a clear picture of who you're writing for in your head at all times. While thinking about how best to replace the SFW guide, I tried to identify the needs of users by analysing IRC logs (about 2GB worth of questions!) and looking at the most popular pages on the help wiki and the forums. My findings surprised me (always a good sign that I'm not making things up); it seemed that *lots* of people were interested in relatively basic installation-related questions. For example, the most popular page on the help wiki, even more popular than the front page, is a document on how to burn Ubuntu to an ISO. That puts us firmly in non- technical user territory. A technical user, in my definition, would most likely understand the concept of CD images, or at least know what to do with them. My proposed solution was to write an official installation guide aimed at these users. How many users have we lost over the years because they couldn't figure-out a "simple" thing like burning an ISO, I wonder? I was aware of the installation-guide package and have skimmed through it previously. It is *completely* unsuitable for non-technical users. I know this from experience. I previously worked in technical support, have worked as a technical reviewer on a book ("Ubuntu for Non-Geeks"), and have been writing documentation for a good 4-5 years now. Still, you shouldn't have to take my word for it. Print a copy of the guide out and find a non-technical user and see what they understand. See if they can install Ubuntu, without any prompting from you. My expectation is that most would fall at the first hurdle and fail to burn the ISO onto a CD correctly! OK, so hopefully that's enough background. I'll now move on to addressing some specific points from your reply. Forgive me if I sound a little terse, I'm trying to be brief. (a) "Putting some more technical material along with that introductory material should help ensure that all the material related to Ubuntu installation is clear and consistent in its use of terminology, and so would make both parts of the whole more useful." When we write documentation, we refer to a style guide. This ensures consistent terminology. Consistency is a poor reason to include technical information. A good reason to include technical information is if it is necessary to allow the user to accomplish their task. (b) "determining what the common installation issues for Karmic will be, before it is released, will be a challenge!" Indeed, which is why Nathan Handler is filling a role entirely devoted to user testing and collecting information on common problems. My own researches suggest that there are certain issues which crop-up every release, such as GRUB errors and problems with partitioning. We will concentrate on these as much as possible, since handling hardware- specific problems is too big a task, as you say. It is likely that only hardware-specific problems with sufficiently common hardware will be included in the Troubleshooting section. (c) "The really simple Ubuntu installs in effect need no documentation" It seems likely from this comment that you have never seen an unassisted non-technical user install Ubuntu for themselves. You may be surprised at the problems people run into. Besides, ubiquity isn't the biggest generator of user assistance queries. It's the bits before, and possibly after, that are. (d) "That does not mean what you personally are or are not interested in is the best way to decide what the Ubuntu community as a whole is best served by" I hope I have answered this comment by explaining my motivations, above. I am basing as many of my decisions as possible on user testing and analysis of common user assistance queries. My interests lie firmly in providing a good user experience for our users, although I understand that perhaps that wasn't obvious. (e) ""I don't think many "non-tech" end users will be printing out this installation documentation anyway, so number of pages is perhaps a poor metric to be using."" That's true, but I do anticipate a use case wh
[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide
Thanks for your feedback. It wouldn't make sense, because then we'd be covering two very different installation methods simultaneously, both ubiquity and debian-installer. We'd also be targeting two very different user groups. When you write (good) documentation, it's very important to write to a specific audience so you can take into account their individual needs and existing knowledge. Writing for non-techs and techs simultaneously will result in something that is unsuitable for both groups. I'm not interested in producing a massive 200 page treatise on everything there is to know about installing Ubuntu either, because *no-one* wants that information. The new guide is being written in response to a perceived user need. Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/KarmicInstallationGuide and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/KarmicInstallationGuide/FAQs for more on this. Each guide should link to the other, in order to send users who've accidentally arrived at the wrong guide on to the right one. This bug is about changing the title so that it's immediately obvious which guide is which. I haven't said that the new guide will be called the "Ubuntu Installation Guide". We'll choose a name appropriate to the target audience later on in the development process. ""Deciding arbitrarily that "newcomers have priority, so the old guide should give up its name" seems unhelpful."" I based the decision on the answers to the following questions: Which is the larger user group? Which user group is more likely to be confused by which guide? [Bug 395360] [NEW] Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide
Public bug reported: A new installation guide is planned for the Karmic release (see spec :karmic-installation-guide). This guide will be suitable for non- technical users, whereas the existing installation-guide is suitable for more technically-inclined users. The title used by the existing installation-guide package is "Ubuntu Installation Guide". This is likely to confuse people when the new guide is released, especially if they arrive at the guide via Google. The title of the installation-guide should be changed to reflect its more technical nature. The new title should encourage technical users to read installation- guide rather than the new, more basic guide. It should discourage non- technical users from reading installation-guide, which is likely to confuse them. ** Affects: installation-guide (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395360 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi mpt, For fear of getting further off-topic, I'll reply in a separate email regarding the test videos. Unfortunately for this bug, there is going to be a license change when the whole guide is rewritten. Certainly, the g-u-g is not fit for purpose at the moment. I doubt it helps very many users, as I've seen with my own user testing. So, is it worth fixing this one issue that happens to have been reported as a bug when there are so many other issues lying unreported? Or should we just wait until the wholesale "fixing" of the docs on the arrival of the new guide? If you have seen a significant number of users struggling with this particular issue and think that improving this topic will result in a reasonable improvement to their user experiences, then we should fix the bug now. [Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands
Hi Osama, I disagree that the term "GNU/Linux" isn't confusing. Try asking a few non-technical computer users their opinion. We can't rely on users having read "about-ubuntu" either - most users look at the documentation to find a small snippet of information and then stop reading. Very few read the whole documentation. It is best for individual topics to stand alone without requiring any detailed preparatory reading. Also, I don't think that the aim of our user documentation should be to encourage people to learn more about Linux. Rather, it should be to provide users with answers to their problems. User assistance must always take preference over evangelism. -- Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341377 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands
Hi Osama, While there is technically an ambiguity between "Linux the operating system" and "Linux the kernel", in practice there is no confusion, for the following reasons: * Most users neither know nor care what a kernel is, and any user documentation is going to be referring to "Linux the operating system" 99% of the time anyway; the fact that there is a kernel named "Linux" is irrelevant to most users. * The kernel is an integral part of the operating system, so for most purposes "Linux the operating system" and "Linux the kernel" are synonymous. There is no need to differentiate between the two. * "Linux" is the dominant term used to refer to "Linux the operating system". Attempting to use the term "GNU/Linux" may confuse users, who may have only ever heard it referred to as "Linux". I concede that the term "Linux" is used wrongly in this context, but that doesn't matter; everyone else uses it wrongly too. There is little value in trying to correct people's usage of these terms, especially since doing so may confuse some readers. "Linux" is the more common term, so we should continue to use that. -- Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341377 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
