[Bug 78693] Re: autodetect kernel argument reboot=warm

2008-07-21 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Hi there,

the bug is not a bug... it was a feature request; it is not also related to
VAIO.
Actually I cannot test it but the report from gkrnours[1] seems to confirm that
the feature request was accepted and implemented.

[Bug 194032] Re: Install hangs on SILO using a LDom on a T5220

2008-05-02 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
As anyone can read on [1]:

The officially released architectures for Ubuntu 8.04 will be i386 and
amd64. The SPARC port will continue to be provided with build
infrastructure, and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, 7.04 and 7.10 will continue to
enable SPARC deployments well into the future, but there will not be an
official Ubuntu 8.04 release for SPARC.

I think this bug will never be fixed :(

[Bug 80569] Re: Java 1.5.0_08 security problem

2007-10-10 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Hi there,

Java was a binary package so we cannot know for sure what they change between a
version and another one but, in the interest of SUN and the Java platform,
minor version are always binary compatible.
It's usually safe to upgrade from 1.5.0_08 to whatever else 1.5.0_xx and the
same applies for 1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2 and 1.6.0.
I also know that these packages live in Universe and support is limited but,
specially for applet, this is a vital component for system security: I would
suggest an upgrade of packages both for Edgy and Feisty.

Many thanks for your attention

[Bug 88258] Re: Kubuntu often fails to shut down properly

2007-02-28 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Hi there,

it happened very often to me until I disabled splash boot screen to see
what shutdown logs where saying.

To try this fix edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and there you will find rows
like this:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet splash locale=it_IT
Change this line to looks like:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro locale=it_IT

You have to remove 'quiet' and 'splash' words.

Let me know if it works for you!

[Bug 82094] USB safe unmount from desktop data corruption

2007-01-29 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

Hi there,

yesterday I plugged a 512MB MP3 pendrive in my kubuntu edgy powered laptop and
started to copy there about 300MB of MP3s: just few seconds and for the KDE
interface everything was copied there!!!
But we all know this is a trick of the filesystem management under linux: it is
saying that everything was done but it deserves to do the real work when it
thinks it is a better time.
So I went in the desktop and right-clicked on the MP3 player icon and I choose
Safe unmount (or whatever it is..): almost immediately the device was
unmounted and... guess what... not all 300MB where really copied!
I plugged the device again, copied files again from KDE (no more than 5 secs
and the operatione was done) and I opened a new konsole:
 sudo umount /dev/sdb

This, obviously, fixed the problem: after 4-5 minutes the prompt came
back and all the data was written there.

I think this is really a nasty bug!!!

[Bug 78693] Re: Slow reboot sequence

2007-01-11 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Hi there,

sorry if I was not very clear: Andrew stated it clearly... I was meaning

triggering a reset line.

[Bug 78693] Re: Slow reboot sequence

2007-01-11 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
After googleing around I found [1]:

The `reboot=' Argument

This option controls the type of reboot that Linux will do when it
resets the computer (typically via /sbin/init handling a Control-Alt-
Delete). The default as of v2.0 kernels is to do a `cold' reboot (i.e.
full reset, BIOS does memory check, etc.) instead of a `warm' reboot
(i.e. no full reset, no memory check). It was changed to be cold by
default since that tends to work on cheap/broken hardware that fails to
reboot when a warm reboot is requested. To get the old behaviour (i.e.
warm reboots) use reboot=w or in fact any word that starts with w will
work.

Other accepted options are `c', `b', `h', and `s', for cold, bios, hard,
and SMP respectively. The `s' takes an optional digit to specify which
CPU should handle the reboot. Options can be combined where it makes
sense, i.e. reboot=b,s2

[Bug 78693] Slow reboot sequence

2007-01-10 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

I have a dual boot (WinXP-Kubuntu Edgy) HP nc8430 laptop: if I reboot
from WinXP the BIOS startup screen is disappearing faster than after a
reboot from Kubuntu.

As a net result you can see that a reboot from WinXP is faster than a reboot
from KubuntuLinux.
I read somewhere (don't remember where) you can tell the BIOS this is a warm
reboot and that everything was already checked and working fine: maybe this is
the difference between the two OSes.

[Bug 65085] Re: QuickStart Menu items show wrong number of apps

2006-10-10 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Well, I discovered that the bug is present only if you set a number equals than
or bigger than 5.
If you try with 0,1,2,3,4 it works well.

Bye
Piero

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

Hi,

in Kubuntu 6.06 looks like that /var/lib/alsa/asound.state is resetted at every
boot.
To reproduce:
- change some values using alsamixer
- save them: sudo alsactl store
- look at the content of /var/lib/alsa/asound.state to see your changes
- rebbot
- look at the content of /var/lib/alsa/asound.state to see your changes
DISAPPEARED

Hope I was clear, please ask for more info if you need them.

Bye
Piero

[Bug 61060] kmail and bogofilter do not work together using kmail antispam wizard

2006-09-18 Thread Piero Ottuzzi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bogofilter

Hi,

in a clean installation, if you setup bogofilter as SPAM filter using
kmail wizard, it looks like bogofilter cannot mark what is SPAM and what
is HAM: every message, even after some weeks of training, has a
spamicity of 0.5200.

To fix this problem I did:
create a dir and copy there some known SPAM messages (call them something
like s1, s2, ..., sN)
in the same dir copy some known HAM (aka GOOD) messages (call them something
 like h1, h2, ..., hN)
rm -rf ~/.bogofilter (maybe you want a mv ;))
rm -rf ~/.bogofilter.cf (maybe does not exists...)
 bogofilter -v -n -B h1 h2 (tell bogofilter h1 and h2 are good messages)
 bogofilter -v -s -B s1 s2 (tell bogofilter s1 and s2 are SPAM)

After this manual feed bogofilter can understand what is SPAM and what
is HAM; it works flawlessy with KMail and update its knowledge of what
is good and what is not.

Hope I was clear, please ask for more info if you need them.

Bye
Piero
