[Bug 2061382] [NEW] cups always prints with default olptions

2024-04-15 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I have CUPS set to default to 2-sided printing. If, when printing, I
select single-sided I still get 2-sided. Currently trying to print from
Atril. Each time I want to print I have to check and set the default
options.

I am running the .deb version, not the snap.

2024-03-01 Thread Raphael Mankin
Similar. New install early Feb 2024 xubuntu 22.04

On opening the lid the screen is clearly locked. If I type the password
into the invisible input box it unlocks properly. Alternatively ctl-
alt-F3, login to the tty, and "pkill -9 screensaver", but then I have to
re-enable the screensaver

[Bug 1917336] [NEW] Mailman does not honour MAILMAN_USER on startup

2021-03-01 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I am running mailman as www-data:list rather than as list:list. After a
reboot something keeps resetting the ownership /var/run/mailman from
www-data:list to list:list. After each reboot I have to reset/restart
manually. All other directories & files are fine.

I have hunted all over but I cannot find where this is happening.
This is the tail of /etc/mailman/mm_cfg.py:

#-
# Uncomment if you want to filter mail with SpamAssassin. For
# more information please visit this website:
# GLOBAL_PIPELINE.insert(1, 'SpamAssassin')

# Note - if you're looking for something that is imported from mm_cfg, but you
# didn't find it above, it's probably in /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Defaults.py.
MAILMAN_USER = 'www-data'

[Bug 1892621] Re: No login screen when waking from sleep

2020-10-12 Thread Raphael Mankin
Some more info:

This bug affected me on a clean install of Ubuntu 20.04.

On upgrading another machine from 18.04 to 20.04 I found that I had both
xscreensaver and xfce4-screensaver installed. This caused me to have to
do a double unlock each time I wanted to wake the PC. I therefore
deleted xscreensaver and got the same problem as on the clean
installation, only worse. On the clean installation I could type the
unlock password even though unlock-widget was not visible; on the
upgraded machine I could not unlock at all.

I therefore removed xfce4-screensaver and re-installed xscreensaver.
This fixed the problem. I now have two usable systems.

[Bug 1892779] Re: Browser will not play videos

2020-08-26 Thread Raphael Mankin
I think that this is related to bug #1894102.

I suspect that this problem is in the sound system. Today I tried using
a wired headset and, while the microphone was working (others on the
call could hear me) I could not hear anything.

I can play videos only if I have the microphone disabled. As soon as I
have a mike connected the video stops.

[Bug 1892779] [NEW] Browser will not play videos

2020-08-24 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I cannot play videos in either firefox or chromium. The video appears to
load but then I just get a spinner and nothing happens. I have tried
youtube.com, operavision.eu and metopera.org. All fail.

I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, turned off acceleration in
firefox's preferences, and generally tried all the suggestions I can
find on the web. Lots of people seem to have this problem.

[Bug 1892621] [NEW] No login screen when waking from sleep

2020-08-23 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

This is similar to, but not identical to #1374830.

I am running a Lenovo P1 with an external monitor. Generally the laptop
lid is closed and I am relying just on an external monitor, mouse and
keyboard.

*Sometimes*, when waking the machine from sleep either:
a. It does not wake the external monitor at all, or
b1. It wakes the external monitor, but all I get is a mouse cursor on a black
screen. Letting it time out and invoke the screensaver then enables me to
login, or
b2. As b1, but the screensaver does not start. I then have to open and shut the
laptop lid in order to wake the external monitor properly.

This whole behaviour is more common when the sleep has been of long
duration, e.g. overnight.

[Bug 1891402] [NEW] Bluetooth headset only works as sink

2020-08-12 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I have a bluetooth headset that I use with both Ubuntu 18 and 20. On 18
everything works fine, on two different machines; on 20 I can only use
the headset as a sink (no mike). When I try to set it in full headset
mode (with mike) using pavucontrol the earphones shut down.

The headset is a TaoTronics TT-BH-85

2020-08-02 Thread Raphael Mankin
Thank you, but I can't see how to install it.

I have
 deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ bionic-proposed
universe restricted multiverse main
in /etc/apt/sources.list and I have run apt-update, but the new version
does not appear in synaptic, software-updater or when I do an apt-
search

[Bug 1875835] [NEW] Firefox fails to start - says it is already running

2020-04-29 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I have just run update-manager (29Apr2020) and restarted the laptop. On
restart I get the message 'firefox is already running'. I disabled the
apparmor profile for usr.bin.firefox and usr.lib.firefox.firefox and
could then run firefox.

Ubuntu-bug says that I have modified the apparmor profile, but while I
have written new profiles for skype and zoom, I have not touched any
pre-installed profiles.

So a firefox bug, or an apparmor bug?

[Bug 1866832] [NEW] xfce4-power-manager not managing the machine

2020-03-10 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I normally run xfce4-screen-saver and xfce4-power-manager with no
problems. Within the past couple of weeks, say from Feb 2020, my
machines are no longer shutting down the screen or suspending the cpu.

To sort out which of the two is causing the problem, on one laptop I
killed the screen-saver and on another killed the power-manager. The one
with the screen-saver running locked the screen, the one with the power-
manager did nothing.

[Bug 1857893] [NEW] Evolution looping using 100% cpu

2019-12-30 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

Possibly one bug, possibly two. At any rate there are two symptoms.

1. Evolution is constantly hogging the whole of one CPU. See attached
screenshot.

2. Evolution is stuck opening a folder. If I try to cancel the open it
just gets stuck in the close. It has been like this for a couple of
weeks now. See attached screenshot.

Neither coondition is cleared by killing and restarting the process.

[Bug 1835647] [NEW] Saned does not start: service is masked

2019-07-07 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I have been running saned for a couple of years on both 16 and 18.
Recently it has stopped working with the message that it is masked. I
don't use the scanner all that often so I cannot say exactly when it
stopped working, certainly in the last few weeks.

[Bug 1832646] [NEW] Printing to Brother_HL_L8260CDW_series outputs garbage

2019-06-12 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

Today I ran the software updater and rebooted. I now find that I am
unable to print to Brother_HL_L8260CDW_series printer; all I get is
garbage and a lot of wasted paper.

I am printing plain text. I have tried printing it from Evolution,
Mousepad, and by piping it into lpr.

Power cycling the printer does not help.

I can print successfully from another PC with a native 18.04
installation (not upgraded from 16.xx).

[Bug 1831232] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 won't boot - failed to connect to lvmetad

Further to my previous note, trying to unlock the swap partition yields:

# udisksctl unlock -b /dev/sda2
Object /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sda2 is not an encrypted device.

[Bug 1831232] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 won't boot - failed to connect to lvmetad

2019-06-10 Thread Raphael Mankin
If I leave the machine for a while and the exit the shell it boots, but
with no swap.

I have not discovered anything useful that I can do while in the
busybox shell.

I have dited /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume to read RESUME=none as
suggested in

[Bug 1831232] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 won't boot - failed to connect to lvmetad

2019-05-31 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

This bug report relates to a machine running 18.04, not the one I am
submitting the report from.

On 30 May The Software Updater prompted me to update. Included in the
update were initramfs components. I now cannot boot the machine.

After decrypting the root file system, instead of being prompted for the
pass-phrase to decrypt the swap, I get the message "cannot connect to
lvmetad: falling back to device scanning". This repeats for a while
until I am dropped into a recovery shell of some sort from which I
cannot access the root disk.

Blocker. My machine is unusable.

[Bug 1809443] [NEW] Lock-screen does not enable one to switch keyboard layouts

2018-12-21 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

First, I am not quite sure where the problem lies: in the power manager,
gnome-screensaver or xfce-screensaver.

I use keyboard layouts in more than one alphabet. If the screen-lock
happens when I am using a non-latin alphabet the unlock screen gives me
no way of switching keyboard layouts. I have to use a tty login to kill
the session, or reboot.

Yes, as I discovered later there is a problem in a bad interaction
between lightdm and xscreensaver.

I removed lightlocker a long time back and replaced it with
xscreensaver because lightlocker caused too many problems (don't now
remember what). Replacing lightdm with gdm has eliminated the latest
problem I was having with secondary logins.

So in summary: lightdm+(lightlocker|xscreensaver) - bad;
gdm+xscreensaver - good,  or at least fewer problems.

It is now even worse.

I changed the TZ from the top ribbon and:
1. Shell/date sees the new TZ, as before
2. The icon in the ribbon loses its display settings, both tooltip and
normal display.
3. If I try to reset things in the Properties menu the new settings
only remain until I close the properties window. They then reset to
null.

More info:

After a logout/login I still could not change the settings.
After removing the clock from the top ribbon and re-adding it worked
OK.

I have now changed the TZ back and again lost the display.

Changing any property seems a bit flaky. Sometimes it takes, sometimes
it does not. I tried to change the TZ back and lost it, removed/added
the clock and this time is took. I then had trouble changing the
display and tooltip formats. Eventually they took. No idea why it
sometimes works and sometimes not.

I am now in the strange situation where the clock thinks it is 12:53
and the shell thinks it is 14:53, with a new shell.  I shall try
another logout/login.

After logout/login I still have different TZs in the clock on the
ribbon and in the shell. There is no TZ environment variable.

When I changed the TZ in the clock I did it two different ways. The
first time I used the drop-down list, and this lost the display. The
second time I typed the new TZ into the text box; this landed me with
the inconsistent TZ settings. Digging around, I see that /etc/localtime
has the wrong setting.

Another try:

Change the TZ using the geographic map, then select more accurately
from the drop-down. This sticks and is consistent with the shell.

I can change the display format OK.

Trying to change the tooltip format (defaults to custom with a blank
format) loses both the tooltip and the display formats.

Re: [Bug 1508222] Re: 'Hibernate' asks for authentication but locks the screen

2018-08-13 Thread Raphael Mankin
Oops! Apologies for the confusion.

I cannot reproduce the original bug, but the system seems to get
mightily confused if I suspend when there are several graphical users
logged in. The suspend works fine, but the wakeup may drop one into any
of the several logged in users.

I have not yet worked out the pattern of what it does.

However I am now on Ubuntu 16.04, not 14.04.

[Bug 1748748] Re: Evolutiion fails to start. Cannot connect /tmp/dbus-*

2018-02-11 Thread Raphael Mankin
Yet another follow-up:

I did a 'pkill -9 evolution' after which I could start evolution.

After a logout/login evolution would not start. After a pkill it did.
Removing the evolution background servers from the session startup cleared the
problem.

I could then also start evolution automatically at session startup.

[Bug 1581088] Re: Middle mouse (wheel-click) button stopped working after upgrade to 16.04

2017-12-03 Thread Raphael Mankin
I have two machines, both running xubuntu. They use the same keyboard
and mouse interfaced through a kvm.

The machine upgraded from 14.10 to 16.04 works fine.

The machine with a clean 16.04 fails. xev shows no middle button, but
the wheel works fine.

Both are fully updated.

[Bug 1660289] [NEW] On waking from sleep laptop does not re-connect to wifi

2017-01-30 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

After waking from a suspend my laptop (Lenovo X1 Carbon) does not always
re-connect to the wifi network. It seems to be consistent in which
networks (access points) it will connect to and which it won't.

I cannot force it to reconnect using the applet to 'connect to hidden
network'. It says that the connection is invalid, and the 'connect'
button is greyed out.

Logout/login does not clear the condition.

After a reboot the machine connects with no problems.

There is a similar problem with *some* new wifi networks in that after
configuring the new connection I have to reboot in order to use it.

[Bug 1659406] [NEW] External monitor not enabled after wake from suspend

2017-01-25 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

The problem arises on my laptop when I have an external monitor
connected through a kvm.

If I have only the external monitor enabled and the machine suspends,
then on waking from the suspend, if the external monitor is *not*
connected, neither monitor is enabled. The only way I have found out of
this situation is to login on a tty and kill the session.

1 Login with both internal and external monitor
2. In xfce4-display-settings select only the external monitor (internal monitor
is off)
3. Suspend the machine
4. At his point my kvm switches control to a different port and effectively
disconnects the external monitor
5. Wake the machine and switch the kvm to use the external kbd and monitor
6. I can enter my password on the internal monitor but the unlock process
leaves me with both monitors disabled.

If in xfce4-display-settings I select mirrored displays, the problem
does not arise.

[Bug 1659032] [NEW] timestamp+interval across a DST boundary gives erroneous result

2017-01-24 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I am adding INTERVAL '1 day' to TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE '2017-03-25
12:00 Europe/London'. This timestamp with chosen quite bloody mindedly
as the arithmetic crosses the DST boundary. (I am testing other software
that generates SQL).

Oracle, Vertica and Presto (with a pg back-end) all give a result of
13:00 on 26March; Raw Postgres give 12:00 on 26March, i.e. it adds only
23 hours. Changing INTERVAL '1 day' to INTERVAL '24 hours' yields 13:00.

[Bug 1640189] [NEW] Updatng roundcube caused password and encryption errors

2016-11-08 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded roundcube following the usual automated prompts from
the software updater. This causes two problems:

1. The DB access was now set to 'no password' causing all db connections
to fail. I had to edit /etc/roundcube/debian-db.php by hand to get
connections to work. Editing /etc/dbconfig-common/roundcube.conf and
then running dpkg-reconfigure did not work.

2. The phph mcrypt module was not properly enabled. I had to run
'php5enmod mcrypt' by hand to get things working again.

Thank you.

I suppose that at some point Ubuntu will give us a newer version in its

[Bug 1638253] [NEW] gtimelog does not recognise a new month for reporting

2016-11-01 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

This is a supplementary to a bug I reported earlier, but I cannot now
find the bug number.

1. At the start of a new month asking for a report for 'last month' gets
the report for 2 months ago. e.g. on 1 Nov I get the report for
September and not for October.

2. Closing and restarting gtimelog does not reset gtimelog's notion of
what month it is.

3. Logging out and in again does reset the 'current month'.

[Bug 1614490] [NEW] Scheduled transaction: cannot change end-date to 'never end'

2016-08-18 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I had a scheduled transaction that ended in Feb 2016. I wanted to revive
it to never end. I clicked the 'never' radio button and save the
transaction, but on re-examination, the end period had not been changed.

I the deleted and tried to re-create the transaction with the correct
properties. However the creation window did not display the transfer
accounts. See the attached screenshot.

[Bug 1569223] [NEW] Evolution hangs or crashes when deleting an LDAP email address

2016-04-12 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

A contact has changed his email address. I added the new address and
then tried to delete the old one. Evolution hung, several times. On
restarting evolution I found that the new address had been inserted, but
that the old one had not been deleted.

After a while I tried again and this time I got crashes rather than
hangs, but still no deletion.

This is using an LDAP address book.

Running evolution in foreground gives:

[Bug 1554953] [NEW] Async notificatiions appear on-screen while it is locked

newly arriving skype chat notifications still appear on the screen. This
is a privacy leak as all new messages are visible.

[Bug 1517016] [NEW] pcmcia scsi card not recognised/initialised

2015-11-17 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

I have a 'no name' pcmcia scsi card that fails to register.

The only identifying info is FCC ID: ANA40G 1890. It claims to be a
Fdomain card.

What happens:
After powering up with the card and my HP scsi scanner installed
lspcmcia shows the card,
fdomain_cs module is loaded.
lsscsi does not show the card.
The machine hangs on poweroff.
I have tried this on both a T61P and a W500.

If I try to do a 'modprobe fdomain_cs' at a terminal it hangs in the
command.

[Bug 1508222] Re: 'Hibernate' asks for authentication but locks the screen

2015-10-21 Thread Raphael Mankin
I should add that this bug creates problems on several levels.

1. The system wrongly thinks that there is more than one user logged in,
2. It asks for authentication when it shouldn't,
3. It locks the screen before one can enter the relevant password,
4. When it wakes from hibernate the screen is already unlocked,
5. If one leaves the screen locked and does not unlock it to enter the
password, the system never sleeps or hibernates but remains on full power.

Severity: a PITA, not a show stopper.

[Bug 1508222] [NEW] 'Hibernate' asks for authentication but locks the screen

2015-10-20 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

When I select the hibernate' menu option the system asks for
authentication saying that more than one user is currently logged in,
however it locks and blanks the screen before I can enter my password.

This is a change in the last couple of weeks.

The problem appears to be associated with having a terminal emulator
running. 'who' says:

raph@w500:~$ who
raph :0 2015-10-20 18:11 (:0)
raph pts/92015-10-20 18:11 (:0)

If I have two terminals running I get:

who
raph :0 2015-10-20 18:11 (:0)
raph pts/92015-10-20 18:11 (:0)
raph pts/02015-10-20 22:52 (:0)

One xfce terminal and an xterm gives:
raph@w500:~$ who
raph :0 2015-10-20 18:11 (:0)
raph pts/92015-10-20 18:11 (:0)

[Bug 1506771] Re: 'Unable to create session' when logging in to a newly created user

2015-10-16 Thread Raphael Mankin
Confirmed my suspicions. Editing /var/lib/AccountService/user/$user and
setting Xsession manually to xfce resolve the issue.

[Bug 1506771] [NEW] 'Unable to create session' when logging in to a newly created user

2015-10-16 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

Similar but not the same as 1056833.

After creating a new user I was unable to login to her id from lightdm.
I could login on a text console and then run startx.

I think the problem is that /var/lib/AccountService/user/$user had
Xsession=ubuntu instead of xfce. I do not have any Unity code on my
machine.

There is no option in the create-user dialogue to select a session type,
not in the lightdm login screen.

I will do some more testing and report back when I have finished this
bug report.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04

2015-10-16 Thread Raphael Mankin
The user creation tool calls itself 'User Administration Tool' It has no
'About' menu. It is in the system>users & groups menu.

I attach a copy of /var/lib/AccountsService/users/$User and light_dm
log.

Yes it is the users-admin tool.
I tried to add the lightdm.log, but the browser did nothing when I clicked the
'post comment' button. Killing and restarting firefox has not helped.

[Bug 1488422] Re: Recovery from 'display cannot be detected' does not work properly

2015-10-08 Thread Raphael Mankin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

This morning I got a 'display cannot be determined' popup when I booted.
On hitting Enter I got another popup with a menu prompting for an
action. However I had no mouse pointer and the keyboard did not respond
to Space, Tab, arrows or Enter so I could not actually make a choice.
Hitting Escape got me out of it and the machine continued its boot
sequence, but with errors and without a display manager.

After logging in on a text console I ran 'startx' with no problems.

Why I got the error in the first place is another question. It is possible
that I did not switch on the monitor early enough :-)

Severity: not something that a newbie would be able to handle.

I deleted lightlocker and replaced it with xscreensaver. Since then I
have had no problems.

updated the BIOS on *a* computer, but was it this one?
