I'm experiencing this problem also with a Nexus 4 and Ubuntu 14.04 with
all updates applied. The phone is recognized but it cannot seem to do
any MTP operations with it.

Installed libgphoto2-6 2.5.3.1-1ubuntu2.2 amd64 and still cannot
retrieve photos from my Canon PowerShot SX20 IS on Ubuntu 14.04. This
worked flawlessly in Ubuntu 12.10. I believe it previously opened in
mass storage mode. Now the device shows up, but I don't see any files.

[Bug 238847] [NEW] fan always on

2008-06-10 Thread Robert W. Brewer
Public bug reported:

My CPU fan is constantly on ever since upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10 to
Ubuntu 8.04. In 7.10 I had to run with noacpi since there were problems
with this laptop's support on Linux. In 8.10 everything seems to work
correctly with this laptop without specifying any special boot flags.
Everything except for the fan being on all the time.

acpi -V shows:
Battery 1: charged, 100%, rate information unavailable.
 Thermal 1: ok, 38.0 degrees C
  AC Adapter 1: on-line

My kernel is 2.6.24-18-rt SMP on amd64 architecture. I'm running a
fully-updated Ubuntu 8.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000-series laptop. This
is an AMD 64-bit dual-core processor with Nvidia graphics.

[Bug 125670] Re: Scroll of synaptics touchpad stop working suddenly

After several days of trouble-free use (without a reboot), my touchpad
suddenly stopped scrolling again. I was just finishing writing an email

[Bug 125670] Re: Scroll of synaptics touchpad stop working suddenly

2008-05-01 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I'm having this issue in Hardy on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series running
amd64. My touchpad worked fine under gutsy (though under that kernel I
was forced to boot with noapic nodebugirq kernel flags). Specifically
the issue I see is that the touchpad works fine when I first boot up,
but at some point while using the machine the touchpad scrolling feature
will simply stop working. I attempted to see if killing the X server
(via ctl-alt-backspace) would correct the problem, but X never came back
for some reason. So I rebooted.

For others getting this to work, add the following lines to your

deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu gutsy-proposed main restricted

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 amd64 on a dv6125om and must boot with noapic

Re: [Bug 130870] Re: Bluetooth headset no longer works [regression]

2007-12-21 Thread Robert W. Brewer
Ok... my bluetooth dongle has a CSR chipset which I believe is the best
supported for SCO on linux. I'm on my second or third dongle since I began
my own journey. :) I have used my headset in full duplex with a small
python app I'm developing. The app uses the ALSA APIs to open the device.
The way the direct ALSA API works is the device is opened once for capture
and once for playback. Before giving up on bluez audio I would try a test
with running aplay and arecord at the same time in different windows with
the same sampling rate, etc. to see if that works. I don't have time to
find an example commandline right now.

I have tried to layer dmix and dsnoop on top of the bluetooth device (via
the .asoundrc) to no avail. dmix balks that the bluetooth plugin is not the
right type of slave device or something. That would have allowed multiple
apps to open the bluetooth device at the same time and would have simplified
some things in my app. Perhaps Twinkle is trying to do that. At some point
I'm hoping that switching to pulseaudio will solve this. It's the next-gen
audio daemon and sounds like it can replace dmix and dsnoop.

bluetooth-alsa. Also, the bluez audio service works somewhat better than
before. I can now play back audio using mplayer for instance. However,
using the headset in duplex mode with the audio service does not work.
Twinkle can open the device *once* but it actually seems to want to open
the device three times (for speaker, ringtone and microphone).

Oh well, it's getting there. Robert, can you use your headset to do
 VoIP, for instance with Twinkle?

Re: [Bug 130870] Re: Bluetooth headset no longer works [regression]

2007-12-16 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I recently tried the bluez audio service in gutsy and it is working fine for
me. I put the following in my ~/.asoundrc:

pcm.headset_hw {
   type bluetooth
   device bdaddrs
}

ctl.headset {
   type bluetooth
   device bdaddrs
}

pcm.headset {
type plug
slave.pcm headset_hw
}

# This specifies the OSS emulation to also use the
# desired mixed sound stuff for the headset.
pcm.dsp1 pcm.headset

Replace bdaddrs with the BD address of your headset. I'm not sure that the
ctl.headset section is needed, but it doesn't seem to hurt.

[Bug 89746] first attempt at bisection

2007-09-18 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I checked out the ubuntu-gutsy kernel tree using git. I compiled a kernel
using the make-kpkg method, installed the resulting .deb, and verified that it
required noapic to boot correctly. This was done by roughly following the
instructions here for a git build:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile
After getting the tools installed, this was roughly:
add my user to the src group
logout/login again for this change to take effect
  cd /usr/src
  git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-gutsy.git ubuntu-gutsy
  ln -s linux ubuntu-gutsy
  cd ubuntu-gutsy
  cp /boot/config-2.6.22-11-generic .config
  make menuconfig
remove kernel debugging from options (in kernel hacking)
save new .config (by exiting menuconfig)
  # the build command procedure using AUTOBUILD=1 didn't seem to work for me.
  export CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4
  make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --append-to-version=-test kernel-image
kernel-headers
  cd ..
  sudo dpkg -i linux-image-blah-blah-blah.deb
attempt to boot new kernel without noapic
Since I am able to verify whether the kernel boots correctly without using
all the restricted modules, I didn't bother trying to compile them. My plan is
that when I get a kernel to boot without noapic, I will also run powertop to
verify that the ehci interrupts are under control. After rebooting back into
my stock gutsy kernel, I did this:
  cd /usr/src/ubuntu-gutsy
  git bisect start
  git bisect bad
Then I tried to build 2.6.15, since that kernel seemed to boot ok without
noapic from the SimplyMEPIS liveCD:
  git checkout v2.6.15
  # git complained about some file being modified or something, so I did this...
  git checkout -f v2.6.15
added -fno-stack-protector to CFLAGS in top-level build Makefile
  cp /boot/config-2.6.22-11-generic .config
  make menuconfig
removed kernel debug symbols and saved .config again
  # Unfortunately, trying to build with make-kpkg immediately failed. The only
way I could build was like this:
  make clean
  make
  sudo make modules_install
  cd /boot
  sudo cp /usr/src/ubuntu-gutsy/arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage vmlinuz-2.6.15
  sudo update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.15
  # Unfortunately, update-initramfs complained that udev hooks needs kernel
2.6.17.
  # So I was unable to try booting 2.6.15. I decided to see if 2.6.17 would
work.
  cd /usr/src/ubuntu-gutsy
  git checkout v2.6.17
added -fno-stack-protector to CFLAGS in top-level Makefile
  cp /boot/config-2.6.22-11-generic .config
  make menuconfig
removed kernel debug symbols from build
  # make-kpkg still failed immediately, so reverted to old-school style:
  make clean
  make
  sudo make modules_install
  cd /boot
  sudo cp /usr/src/ubuntu-gutsy/arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage vmlinuz-2.6.17
  sudo update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.17
  sudo vi grub/menu.lst
added lines for 2.6.17 above BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST
rebooted into 2.6.17 kernel without quiet splash noapic noirqdebug boot
flags

Unfortunately, the 2.6.17 boot consistently just hung shortly after
initializing USB, although the keyboard was still responsive. Sometimes
the last message was about Uniform CD-ROM driver and other times it
was from the USB subsystem. I tried booting with noapic noirqdebug
and this did not work either. I was hoping that by this procedure I
could boot an old kernel without noapic and then begin bisecting the
kernel changesets (with the help of git bisect) to find what change made
noapic necessary on my system. Then some low-level guru might be able
to get it fixed once that smoking gun change was found.

When I get some time again I will try to replicate this procedure with
some other kernel versions to see if I can find one that boots without
noapic, and thus initiate my bisection process.

Can anyone else try to reproduce my findings so far? Was my build
procedure for 2.6.17 valid?

[Bug 89746] Re: HP Pavilion dv6103eu laptop - all Ubuntu versions gets frozen during X startup until I specify noapic boot option

2007-09-13 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I have run some more bootup tests. I am now booting with the options
noapic irqfixup instead of my previous noapic noirqdebug. My system
runs very stable with either of those, but there are fewer spurious ehci
interrupts with irqfixup. powertop shows the ehci interrupts drop from
450 per second to 250 per second with irqfixup.

I have also found that the LiveCD of SimplyMEPIS 6.5.02 (64-bit) boots
fine on my system. I believe it is running kernel 2.6.15. Perhaps an
attempt at bisecting the differences between that kernel and the current
version will yield what changes are causing the problem.

2007-09-06 Thread Robert W. Brewer
Any suggestions on how to debug this problem?

I have tried using powertop to see the interrupt usage. With no USB
devices plugged in, my machine shows about 450 ehci_hcd interrupts per
second. When I unload the ehci_hcd module these interrupts stop. This
is all with boot parameters noapic noirqdebug. My machine still won't
boot without those parameters.

I applied the SCO flow control patch to the gutsy 2.6.22 kernel source
and recompiled. I was then able to use my bluetooth headset with
headsetd. Unfortunately I'm having trouble rebuilding the restricted-
modules package correctly so this isn't a workable solution for me yet.

[Bug 89746] Re: HP Pavilion dv6103eu laptop - all Ubuntu versions gets frozen during X startup until I specify noapic boot option

2007-08-17 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I tried recompiling the Gutsy 2.6.22-9 kernel with all RTC options
completely disabled. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to change anything
for me. On bootup with noapic noirqdebug I still had over 65% CPU
usage in hard interrupts (according to top). When I booted without
those flags, the machine hung during boot again and was non-responsive
to the keyboard.

[Bug 130870] Re: Bluetooth headset no longer works [regression]

2007-08-16 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I'm seeing this same issue. I had my bluetooth headset working pretty well
with the Feisty kernel using headsetd from the bluetooth-alsa project. Now
with Gutsy I get the same error message listed above. I'm running amd64
architecture. My bluetooth chipset is a CSR device (from lsusb):
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle
(HCI mode)

[Bug 131470] Re: [Gutsy] Printers completely stopped working after the cupsys update 1.2.12-3ubuntu1

2007-08-12 Thread Robert W. Brewer
Updating to cupsys 1.2.12-3ubuntu2 and running sudo aa-complain cupsd
have allowed me to print again. Unfortunately I didn't do a printing
test right after upgrading to the newer cupsys release so I don't know
which change fixed it.

[Bug 89746] Re: HP Pavilion dv6103eu laptop - all Ubuntu versions gets frozen during X startup until I specify noapic boot option

2007-08-12 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I have done a more comprehensive test of boot parameters too see the
behavior of my system. These were all done running Gutsy Tribe 4 with
linux-image-2.6.22-9-generic version 2.6.22-9.25 on amd64 architecture.
My HP dv6000 series laptop has a dual-core AMD Turion64 x2. I'm running
the proprietary nvidia driver.

No special boot params: hangs during Loading hardware drivers. Does not
respond to ctl-alt-del.
noapic: boots up properly. top shows 70% of combined CPU usage in hard
interrupt state. After a minute or two, kernel says disabling IRQ #7.
According to /proc/interrupts, IRQ 7 is for ehci_hcd:usb1.
noapic noirqdebug: boots up properly. top shows 70% of combined CPU usage in
hard interrupt state. In /proc/interrupts, interrupts appear unbalanced to
CPUs. Also, appears that the 70% interrupts are being caused by ehci_hcd.
acpi=noirq: problems loading X. Screen turns black and does not progress
further. Still responds to ctl-alt-del and reboots the box.
acpi=off: same symptoms as acpi=noirq.
pci=noacpi: same symptoms as acpi=noirq.
nmi_watchdog=0: same symptoms as using no special boot params.
nmi_watchdog=2: same symptoms as using no special boot params.
maxcpus=1: boots and appears to work well (only with 1 core). However,
shutdown appears to hang. Once it hung with System is restarting, please
wait... on the screen. Another time it hung after printing Running local
boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK].

Currently I am run with noapic noirqdebug for normal usage and I don't
see any hangs or other issues besides the fact that performance is poor.

[Bug 89746] Re: HP Pavilion dv6103eu laptop - all Ubuntu versions gets frozen during X startup until I specify noapic boot option

2007-08-10 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I have an HP Pavilion dv6125om which is having this issue in both Feisty
and Gutsy Tribe 4, both running in amd64 mode with the ubuntu generic
kernel. If I boot without special boot params, it will hang with the
splash screen progress bar at around 13%. If I boot with noapic
noirqpoll things boot up ok, but about 75% of my total CPU (as shown in
top, both cores combined) is used in hard interrupt state, and it
appears ehci_hcd is the culprit based on /proc/interrupts. I'm running
the latest bios (F.38 from July 2007).

I upgraded to Gutsy because based on the resolution of the following bug report
I thought this issue may have been fixed:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7562

I too am willing to provide what I can to help get this resolved. I'd
really like to see this box performing the way it should. Thanks.

[Bug 131470] Re: [Gutsy] HP network printer completely stopped working after the recent cupsys update

2007-08-10 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I'm having similar issues. I used update-manager to upgrade from Feisty
to Gutsy Tribe 4. I'm running cupsys 1.2.12-3ubuntu1 on amd64
architecture. My Samsung ML-4500 attached to a standalone ethernet
print server dongle stopped printing following the upgrade. Everything
I attempt to print shows a stopped job in the GUI interfaces.

The CUPS error_log has:
PID 23049 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip) stopped with status 9!

When I try to recreate the printer in the printer admin windows, there
is no ML-4500 driver listed.

[Bug 38574] Re: [Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake

2006-07-20 Thread Robert W. Brewer
After some more playing around, I discovered that the timeout value
of 0 in gpilotd-control-applet was causing gpilot to hang at the end
of the sync. I changed that timeout to 4 seconds and now gpilotd
can perform multiple syncs without having to be killed and restarted.
I had changed it to 0 seconds due to another message somewhere
saying that was a recommended fix for some of these USB sync issues.
I rebooted just to see if that would help with the gpilotd GUIs...
and now it's working! I've done 5 correct syncs in a row via gnome-pilot's
standard GUI interfaces.

So it does appear that moving to the 2.6.17.x kernel is what corrected the
issue for me too.

[Bug 38574] Re: [Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake

2006-07-20 Thread Robert W. Brewer
Tonight I tested a full restore of my palm device. First I synced it with
gnome-pilot, which worked correctly from the GUI. Next I cleared
the memory on the device. The restore results
were disappointing. The restore began properly, then the progress
bars started flashing back and forth wildly, then the palm disconnected
and the progress window appeared to be hung. I could not close
the window. I eventually killed gnome-pilot-applet and gpilotd.
I started gpilotd manually without gnome-pilot-applet and the
restore appeared to be going much better. After several
minutes the palm reported that it was complete and prompted me to
reset the device, but gpilotd appeared to be hung still trying to
transfer data. When
I reset the device, it got a fatal exception during bootup. This problem was
no doubt because the restore was only partially completed.

Needless to say it appears this process is still far too flaky to
be my primary means of backing up the device. Once again for reference
this is while running the 2.6.17.6 kernel on an up-to-date dapper drake.

[Bug 38574] Re: Pb syncing treo 650 on dapper drake

2006-07-19 Thread Robert W. Brewer
I'm having this problem too. I was previously running Debian unstable
with all the same hardware and syncing worked fine to my USB visor using
pilot-link. I reinstalled the laptop with dapper drake and I'm getting
the flakiness reported here: once in a blue moon it will work, 95% of
the time it hangs immediately while trying to get the user info from the
visor. I've tried pilot-link directly and gnome-pilot and experience a
similar type of hang with both.

It seems there is some confusion in this thread about pressing the
button on the cradle. Even under Debian I had to press the button on
the cradle to wake up the device and have it establish the USB
connection. There has always been a human-level timing issue when using
pilot-link with a USB device: you need to press the button on the cradle
first, then start pilot-link before the USB device disconnects. The
issue of this bug report appears more like a hang that occurs after
pilot-link or gnome-pilot establishes the connection with the device.

I compiled and installed the 2.6.17.6 kernel and though it usually gets
further in the syncing now, it still times out. So it's not clear that
simply upgrading the kernel solves the problem.
