[Bug 815829] [NEW] Doesn't report a useful error when distributions are priority pinned in apt preferences
Public bug reported: Hi, every time I do a dist upgrade I run into this. The update manager knows how to change the package repositories, but it should also check that the repositories it needs end up with a suitable priority as seen in 'apt-cache policy' to allow the upgrade to happen. Otherwise, it fails and it doesn't know why. This could be important if, say, some installation instructions give advice on how to pull in just a few packages from a newer release without upgrading wholesale by using release priority pinning. The user doing this may not understand what is happening when following such instructions, and then later get a cryptic error. As such, it might be useful for this check to be back-ported to the update mangers going back to one or more LTS releases. Example /etc/apt/preferences: # You will need to remove this (or change oneiric to psychedelic or # whatever Ubuntu 12.04 gets named) when you want to dist-upgrade to # oneiric; the do-release-upgrade script won't change it for you (or # know what went wrong) Explanation: Don't install oneiric packages by default Package: * Pin: release a=oneiric Pin-Priority: 99 Explanation: Don't install natty-proposed packages by default Package: * Pin: release a=natty-proposed Pin-Priority: 98 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: update-manager-core 1:0.150.2 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-rc7+ x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Mon Jul 25 12:09:44 2011 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release amd64 (20100429) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_NZ:en PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: update-manager UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to natty on 2011-07-23 (1 days ago) ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug natty -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/815829 Title: Doesn't report a useful error when distributions are priority pinned in apt preferences To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/815829/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 510419] Re: Suspend hangs after upgrade to 9.10
My laptop which was installed as Karmic and only upgraded as updates comes out intermittently has this issue. It is a Inspiron 9400 with a nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS. I put some notes on Bug #506719 - summary: try suspending from a VT (ctrl+alt+f1, login, sudo pm-suspend). If it suspends successfully, but on resume nothing appears until you press Alt+F7, then we possibly have the same bug (and it is related to nvidia drivers, though indeterminably intermittent) -- Suspend hangs after upgrade to 9.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/510419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 506719] Re: Suspend/Hibernate Fail
I get this on Karmic from time to time on my Dell Inspiron 9400. I also have nvidia card. The frustrating thing for me is that it sometimes works, and then I know that I can generally keep suspending and resuming so long as I don't reboot. I did get a new ureadahead, ufw, libc6-bin (plus various other probably ignorable updates eg cups, chrome, menu, some libs) since it last worked successfully. People experiencing this problem, try running 'sudo pm-suspend' from a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f1, then login at the text prompt). What I find is that if I suspend from a text terminal, the suspend will succeed. On resume the video card does not appear to initialize successfully, but this is a matter of Alt+F7, to switch back to X. However as I mention above, sometimes it will succeed in X too. I confirmed this behaviour on 2.6.31-22, 2.6.31-21, and 2.6.31-20, definitely one of those kernels has worked for me in the last. -- Suspend/Hibernate Fail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/506719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 441195] [NEW] [karmic] Dell Inspiron 9400 / ICH7 - Mixer controlling wrong settings
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio Hi, this might not be a bug in pulseaudio but I wasn't sure of the right package for this. Basically each of the volume controls in gnome seem to control the wrong mixer channel. The exact device ID is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) 00:1b.0 0403: 8086:27d8 (rev 01) Sliding the volume control with alsamixer open, I see behaviour where at the top 80% of the volume range, the Master level is changed from 0 to 100%. In the ~5% or so below that, the LFE level is changed from 0 to 100%. In the bottom ~15%, the PCM level is dropped. This seems like quite deliberate behaviour, but for this laptop it is entirely inappropriate. Between the 15% and 20% setting for instance the subwoofer speaker goes from 0% to 100%, with the treble speakers off. It sounds *awful*! More appropriate behaviour for this laptop is to have LFE at ~100% and Master at ~85%, and then just changing PCM between about 100% and 25% will give good levels for most environments. Alternatively, you can adjust both LFE and Master together - ideally with LFE slightly higher than Master - and leave PCM on high and this will achieve a similar effect. Micah, not really. I for one though would like to highlight threads which discuss key words about topics I specialize in, rather than have to do that for every thread. Also there are authors I respect who I'd like to read much more of their writings than other authors. I'd like the unwatch thread to be more like mark thread as boring, which might even have more options to say whether there were some key words that made it boring, because perhaps I'd like to rank down messages which match that. [Bug 116183] GTK's compose map is different to X's
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0 I'm guessing that GTK is the root cause of this. But basically, I can't type certain compose sequences in Mozilla, OOo or gnome-terminal that work in xterm or emacs. Or, the resultant sequences will be different. For instance, in emacs or xterm if I type Multi_key underscore A, I get a ā as defined in /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose. However, if I enter it in any gtk application, I get ª. This is particularly irritating when entering pīnyīn, which uses characters like ǚ. I have yet to figure out what gtk expects me to hit to compose a character with a caron on it, or why it doesn't just let X.org do it for it. I've seen this in all Ubuntu releases from Dapper to Feisty, and I expect that this is the root cause behind Bug #98945 too. Note I'm using xkb directly to configure my keyboard, not gnome- keyboard-properties. Every time I start certain gnome-control-panel applications they will override this keymap and I will have to re-run xkbcomp to load the keymap I actually want. ** Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- GTK's compose map is different to X's https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/116183 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51402] Re: splash causes fade-to-white on Toshiba Satellite M40X (ATI Radeon Mobility X600)
I think it's a radeon-specific bug. The atyfb (iirc, not near my laptop atm) driver doesn't work with a lot of radeon cards. My old Dell Inspiron 8000 did the same thing with that driver, too. The reason I logged it against this was my suspicion that the Ubuntu- specific(?) splash extension was making a card-specific choice to try to use a better framebuffer driver than vesafb. Failing in this manner would be fine, but it does exactly the same thing with the Safe VGA menu option from the Live/InstallCD. That menu option should *definitely* not use card-specific framebuffer drivers for the splash; either VGA or VesaFB are the safest. Perhaps allow splash=vesa and splash=vga, and add those options to the LiveCD installation menu? -- splash causes fade-to-white on Toshiba Satellite M40X (ATI Radeon Mobility X600) https://launchpad.net/bugs/51402 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51407] postmodern tile set has incorrect chinese characters
Public bug reported: Hi there, Despite not being Chinese, starting mahjongg I am somehow offended on behalf of the Zhongren that the default tileset has some characters which are drawn incorrectly; that is to say the character has been stylised based on poor interpretations of the original brush strokes. What has probably happened is that already stylised characters were used as a basis for the postmodern set, and subtleties of the original strokes were overlooked. In particular; the 4 of characters is definitely wrong, and the 7 and 8 of characters look awkward. One or two of the wind tiles do not look to be composed of valid strokes. I think most of the others are probably ok. It might be worth getting someone who is actually Chinese to look at the postmodern tile set and point out which characters need fixing. This might seem stupid and trivial, but I understand well written script is important to the Chinese, and Mahjongg is a famous game with much heritage in that country. ** Affects: gnome-games (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- postmodern tile set has incorrect chinese characters https://launchpad.net/bugs/51407 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51400] Re: Can't edit partitions without adding and removing
I think what happened was the sub-menu was grayed out for me, and it wasn't completely obvious why. It did feel like the kind of bug that you'd have to be nuking a Windows partition from orbit at the time to truly appreciate. The machine is still caught with the sickness, every circuit dreading that instruction processor leap into sector 0. Even though the system was already purring more gently, it was still weak, not yet fully capable. After some battling, the installer crashed for me [https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/50957], at which point I could have sworn I could feel the seething of the entity on the hard disk below towards my fingers. Not to be beaten, I noted it down on my bug powder dust trail, swore I'd curse that behaviour with a bugreport, and fired up ubiquity once more. The next time through we were much better prepared; not going to fall for the murphy's cylinder rounding again [https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/51396], I opted for a 2.5GB root, and then bore down upon that XP install with reckless and wanton abandon. With a firm pass through with parted and the installation checkmarked go, I reflected upon how cool it was the first time I got to play Tetris while installing Linux, and how much infinitely cooler this was, installing via the LiveCD. So in this nostalgic moment I chose to log my bug reports, and finish it all off with a gratiutous game of Mahjongg, which, incidentally, was solved first time. That's when I knew that the installation had done the trick. Anyway, IIRC I had a partition space that I wanted to change to don't format that was already marked as being ext3. And, I don't remember Format to... being available. So, I reckon if you can't replicate that behaviour pretty quickly then this bug doesn't really deserve to exist much longer. All the best from NZ dude :-) Keep up the good work and have a great weekend. -- Can't edit partitions without adding and removing https://launchpad.net/bugs/51400 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 49667] Re: openoffice does not start on amd64
I had the same problem - missing files in that lib32stdc++6 package. This really can't be a coincidence; some postinst/preinst somewhere is nuking the files. The workaround I used was the same as above; dpkg --remove lib32stdc++6 apt-get install lib32stdc++6 And now OOo starts! [Bug 49667] Re: openoffice does not start on amd64
Note: it is possible that I ran out of /usr space during an install. I didn't think I hit 100% full, rather the N% ext3 reserved space limit, then 'lvextend'ed it bigger, though.
