Re: [Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2008-11-08 Thread Savvas Radević
How do I get udev 124-10. I have 124-8 on my computer, SynapticPM shows
no upgrade available. This is an important upgrade if you ask me.
You mean 124-9 ? Enable proposed, as explained in a previous comment:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

124-10 is for the development release only (future ubuntu 9.04
jaunty jackalope) :)

[Bug 43644] Re: time-admin shows different time zone when it is restarted

2008-11-07 Thread Savvas Radević
This is weird:
a) tzdata shows the correct timezone (Europe/Belgrade)
b) time-admin (see attached screenshot) still shows Europe/Sarajevo instead of
the chosen Europe/Belgrade.

$ sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite tzdata_2008h-2ubuntu1_all.deb
(Reading database ... 152581 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace tzdata 2008h-2ubuntu1 (using
tzdata_2008h-2ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement tzdata ...
Setting up tzdata (2008h-2ubuntu1) ...

Current default timezone: 'Europe/Belgrade'
Local time is now: Fri Nov 7 18:03:46 CET 2008.
Universal Time is now: Fri Nov 7 17:03:46 UTC 2008.
Run 'dpkg-reconfigure tzdata' if you wish to change it.

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

Current default timezone: 'Europe/Belgrade'
Local time is now: Fri Nov 7 18:04:08 CET 2008.

[Bug 43644] Re: time-admin shows different time zone when it is restarted

2008-11-07 Thread Savvas Radević
I think I know what the problem is:
A lot of timezone files in /usr/share/zoneinfo/ are the same and probably tz
commands can't figure which country is which.

In my case:

$ md5sum /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/* | grep 226ad0c2724b4674d6a9206a43661ff9

teej, have you tried with 32-bit Ubuntu Intrepid?

Also, I don't know if it's possible, but try in BIOS to disable
unnecessary devices and set SATA to compatible/legacy (or enhanced for
change). And make your CPU to use one core and disable any
hyperthreading/virtualization/whatever options (if possible)! You know,
minimalise it :)

Finally, try booting off 64-bit or 32-bit cds along with these two boot

Right, I switched it because I cannot verify it anymore, however if

otherwise mark it as Invalid or Incomplete (which would mark it as
invalid after 3 months or so of inactivity) :)

[Bug 274124] Re: Race condition in pulseaudio loading for GNOME session

2008-10-29 Thread Savvas Radević
Hm.. to all OSS users, (Realtek etc) - and to all those who just don't
know, but want to try and make it work, try execute this command:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall oss-preserve psemu-sound-oss oss-compat
alsa-oss alsa-tools alsa-firmware-loaders alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo adduser $USER audio
sudo adduser $USER pulse
sudo adduser $USER pulse-access
sudo adduser $USER pulse-rt

(One of the above packages made it work for me, I don't know which one or ones)
- When it's done installing/reinstalling, log out and log back in
- Go to System Preferences Sound, you should see new ALSA ... Analog
(OSS) in the drop down lists - choose the last analog (oss) item mentioned in
each list.
- For Device: choose the Alsa mixer

Now press Close and reboot your machine (yes, restart!).

Log in again, and execute this command to open the volume control:
gnome-volume-control

Choose in the device Alsa mixer
If you see a PCM section in the volume control, raise its volume.
If you don't see it, click Preferences and make sure PCM is checked there.

This should hopefully enable you to listen to flash movies audio and
local audio until pulseaudio is fixed :)

2008-10-24 Thread Savvas Radević
OK, I have purged the packages of network manager and installed again:
sudo aptitude purge network-manager network-manager-gnome
sudo aptitude install network-manager-gnome ubuntu-desktop
sudo aptitude reinstall dbus consolekit

Now it says (as a normal user):
$ nm-applet --sm-disable
** (nm-applet:6498): WARNING **: No connections defined

I believe it has something to do with my custom settings in
/etc/network/interfaces (see comment #14)

[Bug 287523] [NEW] [wishlist] login and gdm - should increase the waiting time with every bad login with a message

2008-10-22 Thread Savvas Radević
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu intrepid ibex 8.10 beta (updated)

$ apt-cache policy gdm login
gdm:
  Installed: 2.20.8-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.20.8-0ubuntu3
  Version table:

  Version table:
 *** 1:4.1.1-1ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

As it is, the gdm (and login) wait a standard amount of several (5?) seconds
after each bad login.
My suggestion is to set an increasing wait of (n*2) seconds after each bad
login. For example:
- Login attempt #1: wait 2 seconds
- Login attempt #2: wait 4 seconds
- Login attempt #3: wait 6 seconds
- Login attempt #4: wait 8 seconds
- Login attempt #5: wait 10 seconds

This could be considered to increase security for brute force attacks and limit
the attempts until the users logs in and notices the bad attempts performed.
Meanwhile, you could consider printing a message Please wait... or
Authenticating... until the waiting period is over.

Note: this wishlist was formed from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5997493

[Bug 285657] [NEW] system-cleaner - should not offer or warn when removing one of the last two installed kernel versions

2008-10-18 Thread Savvas Radević

People when uninstalling stuff, should not be offered or at least *warned* when
removing one of the last two installed kernel versions. It's really critical
they know that when removing such packages, means that they won't be able to
boot to an older kernel if anything goes bad (and sometimes it does go bad!).
The last two kernels may be or may not be in the ubuntu repositories, so the
only way I can think of solving this is comparing linux-image-*-generic with
the installed kernels in /boot/grub/menu.lst
As you say in your wiki homepage: This affects especially people participating
in the development of Ubuntu. - what I'm explaining stands for development
release testers.

I use the dust theme and windows border from community-themes. The text in
security popup box (about https ssl certificate) appears pitch black :)
I can only see the image of that passport checking clerk, the button More
information and the padlock icon.

I wouldn't call it a security vulnerability, but I believe it needs to
be fixed, firefox- or theme-wise.

[Bug 225140] Re: totem - cant play mpg properly - mpeg2dec decoding error #1

2008-10-14 Thread Savvas Radević
Unfortunately, it still happens in intrepid 8.10 with the same errors.
I would love to upload a copy of the mpg I attained, but I don't know if there
will be any copyright issues about it.

I will set this bug as Invalid since it seems that only the Ghetto gospel
mpg file I attained has this problem.
The file/cdrom are a bit old, so this bug instance probably has to do with some
bad encoding issues, which I wouldn't want to bug the developers about anymore
:)

If I see more instances on other video clips, I will inform you and
gnome's bugzilla

  Ubuntu intrepid ibex beta (updated)

  Problem:
When I try to eject a cd/dvd, Ubuntu intrepid inserts the cdrom right back in
the cd/dvd drive

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Either by pressing eject button on the device or using the eject command
or using the eject icon in nautilus sidebar
  2) The dvd is ejected successfully
  3) The dvd is loaded back in right after being ejected. This happens after
the message eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded of eject -v command.

Note 1: The cd/dvd-rw drive is a SATA device
- Note 2: This happens in tty and ubuntu desktop
+ Note 2: This happens while in tty and ubuntu gnome desktop manager

[Bug 283444] [NEW] ekiga should understand the plus + sign for international pc-to-phone calls

2008-10-14 Thread Savvas Radević
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Ubuntu intrepid ibex 8.10 beta (updated)

Ekiga should understand the prefix plus + sign instead of 00 for
international pc-to-phone calls.
A reason would be that in some countries they use 99 instead of 00. Another
reason would that many people provide their number with a plus + prefix.

Ekiga, as it is, does not detect the + prefix as a pc-to-phone number
and tries to connect to something, though I don't know where (probably
as a pc-to-pc?)

Well it doesn't really matter as it's a *really* low priority
considering other bugs
Also, I've decided to use the access.conf with linux-pam which gives a

[Bug 280941] [NEW] update-manager partial upgrade should distinguish unmet dependencies from unused dependencies

2008-10-09 Thread Savvas Radević
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu Intrepid ibex 8.10

$ apt-cache policy update-manager
update-manager:
  Installed: 1:0.93.21

  Version table:
 *** 1:0.93.21 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

In a development release, update manager does not see the difference
between unmet dependencies and automatically installed dependencies,
while apt-get states clearly that there are unmet dependencies and does
not ask for partial upgrade.

This usually creates problems for users willing to test the beta
release, it should therefore be fixed for a better and smoother bug
reporting :)

2008-10-06 Thread Savvas Radević
** Summary changed:

- [time-admin] On restart, time-admin shows wrong time zone
+ time-admin shows different time zone when it is restarted

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

- If you choose Europe/Zagreb, Europe/Ljubljana, Europe/Belgrade,
- Europe/Sarajevo or Europe/Skopje, every time you restart time-admin it
- will show Europe/Sarajevo.
+ Reproduceable in releases:
+ - Intrepid Ibex 8.10
+
+ Latest tested version:
+ $ apt-cache policy gnome-system-tools gnome-about
+ gnome-system-tools:
+ Installed: 2.22.1-0ubuntu1
+ Candidate: 2.22.1-0ubuntu1
+ Version table:
+ *** 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 0
+ 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
+ 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+ gnome-about:
+ Installed: 1:2.24.0-0ubuntu1
+ Candidate: 1:2.24.0-0ubuntu1
+ Version table:
+ *** 1:2.24.0-0ubuntu1 0
+ 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
+ 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+
+
+ If you choose Europe/Zagreb, Europe/Ljubljana, Europe/Belgrade,
Europe/Sarajevo or Europe/Skopje, every time you restart time-admin it will
show Europe/Sarajevo.

If Europe/Zagreb is placed in front of Europe/Sarajevo in
/usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab, then Europe/Zagreb will apear every time.
If one chooses Europe/Vienna, one will get Europe/Vinnea on restart.

My guess is that problems lies in locales package (langpack-locales
source), where all this towns are linked to Belgrade (europe file in
  tzdata2006e.tar.gz or tzdata2006f.tar.gz; available in langpack-locales
  source).

Same thing happens with Europe/Bratislava (changed to Europe/Prague
  after restart).

This is cause all these citys were in one country before (Belgrade,
Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Skopje and Zagreb in Yugoslavia and Bratislava and
Prague in Czechoslovakia). But those countrys fall apart 16 years ago.

This bug exsist for 16 years. Please fix :)

[Bug 72192] Re: No graphics (Show graphics grayed out or nothing happens)

2008-09-28 Thread Savvas Radević
confirming on intrepid ibex.. but I think it would be better to concentrate on
creating a screensaver that gets the status of the current working unit :)
Either way, both solutions would be accepted!
