In case it helps, I can't add contacts at all. The drop down is greyed
out for both SIP and IRC.

Sorry to say, I made sure the headphones worked on u-know-what O/S.
Just trinary problem reduction.
I upgraded to 10.04 but still can't get there from here. I CLI'ed the
System-preferences-default sound card and got:
~$ /usr/bin/asoundconf-gtk
sh: /usr/bin/asoundconf: not found

february after Update Manager did a kernel update. I have tried on an

Sorry for the delay.
Different mouses (mice?) work fine and this mouse (Laser trailer 3D
laser mouse) works fine on other computers. I'm trying to find someone
else who runs 9.10 so I can try it specifically.

advertised High speed, which it is. I'm wondering if they relied on
characteristic behaviours of you-know-who to take short cuts on cleanly

Yep, worked fine in 9.04 and further back. (I first started with Ubuntu
7.something.)
I notice that the pop-up menu comes up underlaying the cursor with the
tip of the cursor being right at the top left corner of the pop-up. If
this we're to be combined with the mouse key not being de-bounced
