[Bug 433092] Re: preseed LVM partition recipe broken

2016-02-23 Thread Thag
You're doing EXACTLY what I was working on ... almost 7 years ago.

Apologies for the completely useless comment, but I burned a lot of time on
this back then.
I feel your pain.

[Bug 433092] Re: preseed LVM partition recipe broken

2016-02-23 Thread Thag
Wow, 5 years just to get a confirmation, that's amazing. Glad I don't
still need it.

If anyone cares, I ditched LVM because of this - one cannot pre-seed
it's config.

[Bug 711355] Re: Songs synced to iPhone 4 do not appear in iPod app

2012-05-10 Thread Thag
rhythmbox's ipod support has been broken since 11.10.
The last time this worked was 11.04.

Very upsetting that an LTS release makes it out with no functional ipod support
at all.
None of the media managers claiming ipod support work in 12.04.

I submitted patches to the upstream Xen build so it builds as-is for

getting nowhere ), why not just cooperate with the Debian maintainers of

Ubuntu doesn't even hava 3.3 anymore. Ubuntu 8,04 (Hardy ?) did, but now
there's no dom0 kernel in Ubuntu.
It is pretty sad, what with the current virtualization push et al that
Ubuntu has zero Xen options other than roll your own.

I'm not yet fully satisfied with the rather intransparent way in which
'wondershaper' limits the speed (for example it seems to strongly reduce
the upload speed eventough I tought I configured it in a way in which it

limitation in reality doesn't limit anything on my machine).

Of course this is not really a solution, but it's some workaround I'll
be probably be able to live with.

But if anyone comes up with further possibilities of testing which could
lead to a real solution, I'd of course be willing to assist.

I commend your willingness to keep hacking at this. I gave up a long time
ago.
It appears that Ubuntu variants of 2.6.32+ kernels have an NFS client
problem that eventually takes the kernel down. There are numerous problem
reports on this. I've switched to debian for my clients that really matter
and no longer have the problem.

2011-01-04 Thread Thag
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

It would be convenient if one could specify a raw file as the output such that
one could dd this file to a USB stick and then boot from it.
This would make automated updates of servers simpler.
One could gen a custom boot image with preseeded answers, create the image and
dd it to USB devices on all servers to be reinstalled, then use IPMI to change
the boot device and reboot to start the installation.

2010-11-30 Thread Thag
David,
You'll have an easier time gathering data if you use something like 'screen' as
a shell wrapper so you can scroll back indefinitely.

Also, regarding the 100Mbit/gigE issue, we did not experience this with
100mBit, but we had all gigE when we upgraded to 9.10, which is when
these problems started.

Lastly, regarding the no traffic for 2 years, I stopped adding data
because nothing had changed. There seemed to be zero interest from
Canonical until very recently.

[Bug 661294] Re: System lock-up when receiving large files (big data amount) from NFS server

2010-11-29 Thread Thag
As for more test cases and messages, here are some other bugs that
AFAICT all refer to the same problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/561210
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/214041
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/585657
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/PqQ0Rrbfh6Yp6PVD7AO8

I've reported my info in the above links so I won't repeat it here.

[Bug 632554] Re: tomcat fails to start with: /bin/bash already running.

2010-11-23 Thread Thag
I'd really like to see this backported to lucid since that's the LTS
release we're using on our servers.

Thanks

[Bug 661294] Re: System lock-up when receiving large files (big data amount) from NFS server

2010-11-21 Thread Thag
I can collaborate the problem reported here. I have the same problem with a
number of servers that were recently migrated to 10.04.
NFS is not stable. frequently, large transfers result in a task blocked for
120 sec message and a dmesg stack trace.

It's utterly incomprehensible to me that an LTS rleease would have this
issue and there appears to be zero interest on the part of Canonical to
fix, or even acknowledge its existence.

[Bug 661294] Re: System lock-up when receiving large files (big data amount) from NFS server

2010-11-21 Thread Thag
I've tried all of the 10.10 ppa kernel backports as they are made
available. This has made no difference. Each one in turn.

I've also played with the mount lines. Here are some of the combinations
I've tried:

rw,noatime,nfsvers=3,udp,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,actimeo=3,sloppy,addr=135.149.74.51

udp - tcp
no nfsvers=3
no actimeo
no noatime

The addr= bit was added because I had a NIC with multiple IP addrs and
thought that that might be confusing it as the NFS docs state that the
server IP resolution logic is not entirely correct.

There are however some servers that have this problem and some that
don't.

OK:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5680 @ 3.33GHz

Not OK:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5405 @ 2.00GHz
AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 280
 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz

They are all using the same mount args as provided by LDAP autofs.

It may be just the use case that has prevented it from happening on that
one server.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable fix. I have a hard time understanding why

Seems like a perfectly reasonable fix. I have a hard time understanding why
it wasn't done this way at first.

[Bug 551707] Re: lucid installer hangs after parted_server crashes

2010-10-15 Thread Thag
Yes, definitely still a problem. The 10.04.1 ISO still has the same
problem.

It's not related to whether the install source is a CD/DVD or USB stick.

I've worked around the problem by adding a:
d-i partman/early_command string debconf-set partman-auto/disk
$(/cdrom/preseed/nuke-old-lvm.sh)

that does this (Note the previously posted fix didn't always work):

# Remove lvm config
vgremove -f system $output 21 || true
pv=$(pvdisplay | grep PV Name | sed -e s/[[:space:]]*PV Name[[:space:]]*//)
pvremove $pv $output 21 || true

This isn't a proper fix, it's a hack.

[Bug 585657] Re: Transfering large files to nfs mount causes system freeze

2010-09-29 Thread Thag
10.04.1 still has the same problem.

4 months later - critical failure and still unassigned?

What are canonical spending all their time on, eye candy? Come on people, this
is a core failure. This is very bad. There are dozens of the same report that
are all unassigned, with one a medium.
Jeez, Mark S should be lying awake a night over this one.

[Bug 532174] Re: [Lucid] sun-java6-plugin not recognized by firefox anymore

2010-09-10 Thread Thag
You're right. I just changed from using a proxy .pac file to an explicit
proxy addr in the java control panel and it works now.

So, java does not work with proxy pac files!!!

Maybe this little bit will save someone else the weeks I've spent on
this.

That does sound like a better option. Is someone else looking at this or

[Bug 632554] [NEW] tomcat fails to start with: /bin/bash already running.

2010-09-07 Thread Thag
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

While it's not recommended to run tomcat as root, there are
circumstances that make it a necessity, like embedded systems. (IMHO
Linux should not enforce policy at this level)

Anyway, setting the following in /etc/default/tomcat6

TOMCAT6_USER=root

Yields this when trying to start tomcat:

# /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start
 * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6
/bin/bash already running.

If there are _any_ login sessions on the machine, IOW if there are any
bash instances, it fails to run.

So, here's a patch that fixes this while not making any changes to
policy or who can run what as who.

Here's the relevant version info:

Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04

ii libtomcat6-java 6.0.24-2ubuntu1.2 Servlet and JSP

[Bug 551707] Re: lucid installer hangs after parted_server crashes

2010-08-26 Thread Thag
Still broken.

I'm attaching the lvm partitioning recipe that is present on disk that
causes the installer to crash.

Note, I have an ISO that uses this recipe and as such is a complete test
case. If you would like the iso to test, please let me know where to
upload it.

[Bug 551707] Re: lucid installer hangs after parted_server crashes

2010-08-26 Thread Thag
A simple script to delete the partitions called form the arly_command
string should work, eg:

d-i partman/early_command string debconf-set partman-auto/disk
$(/cdrom/preseed/seed-disk.sh)

/cdrom/preseed/seed-disk.sh:

lvps=$(lvs  |cut -d' ' -f 3 | grep -v LV)
for lv in $lvps ; do
lvremove $lv
done

Of course, this only works if you are building a complete ISO. It's
doesn't do anything to help the distribution CDs. That needs a real fix
in the parted_server.

[Bug 606524] Re: ATTR{class} rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ no longer work

The driver was being loaded in the initrd. Blacklisting the module and
rebuilding the initrd fixed this.

Appears to be related to overlay'd IP addresses. With the clientaddr
specified, this has not happened since.

Adding clientaddr=135.149.75.130 may have fixed this.

Is there some other kernel version/build that I should be running with?
I can't believe that the latest LTS release doesn't have a functioning NFS
server.

Boris, you are correct (as always). It was my fault patching
the packageXen40x.sh script. Your patch didn't apply cleanly to the most
recent
http://virtualusr.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/mk-xen40x-1007131650.docversion
and I applied the hunk with the patches after the wrong zcat.

Thanks.

[Bug 606523] [NEW] INFO: task nfsd:5047 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2010-07-16 Thread Thag
Public bug reported:

This is triggered by high volume NFS traffic. This box has 3 fibre channel
volumes that are exported over NFS.
I started with a 10.04 linux-server kernel, which died regularly at least once
a day.
I started upgrading to try the ppa kernels and the frequency has decreased but
all of the kernels below have this same problem:

ii linux-headers-2.6.32-22-server 2.6.32-22.36
Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x
ii linux-image-2.6.32-22-server 2.6.32-22.36
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.32 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.32-23-server 2.6.32-23.37
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.32 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.34-5-server 2.6.34-5.14~lucid1
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.34 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.35-6-server 2.6.35-6.9~lucid1
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.35 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.35-7-server 2.6.35-7.11~lucid1
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.35 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.35-8-server 2.6.35-8.13~lucid1
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.35 on x86
ii linux-image-server 2.6.32.23.24
Linux kernel image on Server Equipment.

The only thing that I can think of that's a bit funny in this config is
that in order to make all servers have consistent automounter paths, we
map all exported devices via NFS, which means that users are using an
automounted NFS path for a local drive. Yes, not optimal but it solves a
lot of other problems.

[Bug 606524] [NEW] ATTR{class} rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ no longer work

2010-07-16 Thread Thag
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

I have a rule that worked fine in jaunty:

 /etc/udev/rules.d/20-fc_hba.rule:
ACTION==add, ATTR{class}==0x0c0400, PROGRAM=fc_hba.py, RESULT==skip,
OPTIONS+=ignore_device, OPTIONS+=last_rule

The fc_hba.py script returned skip unless the system was in runlevel
3. This was to allow me to boot without this driver, then load it later.

In lucid this driver loads immediately even though fc_hba.py always
outputs skip.

[Bug 606524] Re: ATTR{class} rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ no longer work

2010-07-16 Thread Thag
I found a blog posting that expresses my sentiments on Lucid's udev
exactly:

http://shallowsky.com/blog/linux/kernel/lucid-udev.html

This is good enough to quote.

I love how if you give the udevadm info arguments in the wrong order, -p -a, it
means something else and gives an error message.
I love how udevadm test doesn't actually test the same rules udev will use, so
it's completely unrelated to anything.
I love the complete lack of documentation on things like string matching and
how the numeric order is handled.
I love how you can't match both the device name (a string) and the USB IDs in
the same rule, because one is SUBSYSTEMS==scsi and the other is
SUBSYSTEMS==usb.
Finally, I love how there's no longer any way to test udev rules on a running
system -- if you want it to actually create new devices, you have to reboot for
each new test. service udev restart and udevadm control --reload-rules don't
touch existing devices. Gives me that warm feeling like maybe I'm not missing
out on the full Windows experience by using Linux.

2010-04-20 Thread Thag
What is the functional state of openldap-dit? (https://launchpad.net
/openldap-dit/)

It hasn't seen any activity since 2009-12-02 and there are no milestones
and no available downloads. The trunk show last modified 20 weeks ago.

Is it functional, or the early stages of work in progress? The former
may work wheres the latter is hardly a solution for the current problem.

I assume one need to use bzr to pull off the source and build it?

Anyone else tried this yet?

[Bug 507089] Re: thunderbird shredder always segfaults on startup with LDAP auth in nsswitch

2010-04-16 Thread Thag
Here's a workaround.
Add yourself as a local user in /etc/passwd /etc/shadow and it'll work.

To confirm, run
getent passwd | grep your uid

and you should see 2 entries, the local and the ldap. If they are ==,
then you did the right thing.

2010-04-14 Thread Thag
Apologies in advance for the useless rant, but whose idea was it to
strip out the default ldap config?

I second the comments of everyone here that laments the time when slapd just
worked.
The cn=config change was difficult to swallow, but in the interest of progress,
OK, fine. This release however is completely unusable out of the box. How can
Ubuntu be so close to a final release of an LTS version and not be able to
support an LDAP authentication server without massive amounts of googling and
cursing? Why does everyone need to be an LDAP specialist to get it to work.

[Bug 442498] Re: openldap install bare bones need default DIT separate package

2010-04-14 Thread Thag
Just to get a feel for the state here, is there currently any work done
at all for this slapd-dit package?

Why is this marked as Won't fix? Is Ubuntu planning a new LTS release
with no LDAP? That'll go over well. Has anyone in canonocal mgmt even
seen this? Or is it a nasty little surprise they'll get from the
enterprisey first reviewer?

I'm trying to plan for a development platform that was going to be 10.4 based,
but needs ldap first out.
Is there a workaround that can be used with pbuilder based chroots? All the
hacks I've seen so far require that one have slapd already running on the
target machine. What if one is building an inert filesystem for NFS boot ?
How are we supposed to get ldap installed and initialized with no debconf
support to prime the database?
Yes there are no docs on how to do this but I would argue strongly against this
being a doc issue. This is plain incomplete. This move should have waited until
the slapd-dit package was complete.
Can this be rolled back until it's ready?

The current state of slapd makes 10.4 unusable for us.

Has anyone tried building a previous ldap source drop on 10.4?

What's the last known working slapd package version?

I might give the slapd downgrade option a shot before giving up and
going over to Debian. They even have dom0 kernels that are less than 2
years old...

[Bug 511245] Re: portmap is not started during boot process before autofs and hence autofs does not work properly

2010-04-12 Thread Thag
Gets worse if you add SAN volumes that are NFS exported.
There's a corner case here that's not working at all:

1 - QLogic SAN - Fails to come up until I reload qla driver with modprobe
-r/modprobe
2 - NFS export, since #1 didn't come up, export also fails.
3 - Since #2 didn't come up, autofs also fails.

2010-03-26 Thread Thag
Nice!!

Thanks for the info.

This is a strong argument for getting this into 10.4. No other distro has a
pre-packages Xen dom0 with a kernel from this century, let alone with nvidia
drivers working.

The last LTS release had dom0 support so this one should too. (IMHO)

-Bruce

On Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 7:54 AM, Thiago Martins
thiagocmarti...@gmail.comwrote:

 Hi!

I'm running the Xen 4.0.0-rc8 with Linux 2.6.32.10 as dom0 using the new
paravirt_ops on top of Ubuntu Lucid 10.4 64bits.
Also I have the composite window manager on top of the Xen! With full 3D
 support!

  To achieve this I do:

 1- Install your Ubuntu Desktop 10.4 beta1 and upgrade your system;

 1.1 - Install some packages:

  aptitude install build-essential libncurses5-dev dpkg-dev debhelper
 fakeroot

2- Download and install a new kernel with dom0 pv_ops enabled:

  sudo -s
  cd /usr/src
  git clone
 git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jeremy/xen.gitlinux-2.6-xen
  cd linux-2.6-xen
  git pull
  git reset --hard
  git checkout -b xen/stable origin/xen/stable
  git pull

2.1 - Download the kernel config file attached to this mail (config-for-
 xen-2.6.32.10-pvops):

Copy the config file to the kernel source dir:

  cp ~Downloads/config-for-xen-2.6.32.10-pvops
 /usr/src/linux-2.6-xen/.config

You can see the differences of my config file against the Lucid one:

  diff /boot/config-2.6.32-17-generic ~Downloads/config-for-
 xen-2.6.32.10-pvops | vim -

...both are close to each other.

 2.2 Configure, compile and install:

make menuconfig # Enable the dom0 support and the Xen
 backend/frontend/xenfs stuffs...
  make
  chmod g-s /usr/src -R # To avoid the error: dpkg-deb: control
directory has bad permissions 2755 (must be =0755 and =0775)
  make dep-pkg
  dpkg -i ../linux-image*2.6.32.10*.deb
  depmod 2.6.32.10
  update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.32.10
  update-grub
  echo xen-evtchn /etc/modules

Now you can try your new kernel without Xen, if you want, it should
 work smootly.

3- Download and install the latest Xen:

  Preparing your environment:

  apt-get build-dep xen-3.3
  aptitude install uuid-dev iasl texinfo

  Download and compile:

  cd /usr/src
  hg clone -r 4.0.0-rc8 http://xenbits.xensource.com/xen-unstable.hg
  cd xen-unstable.hg
  make xen
  make tools
  make stubdom
  make install-xen
  make install-tools PYTHON_PREFIX_ARG=
  make install-stubdom

  update-rc.d xend defaults 20 21
  update-rc.d xendomains defaults 21 20

4- Configuring your Grub2 through the file /etc/grub.d/40_custom:

  cut here
 #!/bin/sh
 exec tail -n +3 $0
 # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type
 the
 # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to
 change
 # the 'exec tail' line above.
 menuentry Xen 4.0.0-rc8 / Ubuntu 10.4 kernel 2.6.32.10 pvops {
 insmod ext2
 set root=(hd0,1)
 multiboot (hd0,1)/xen-4.0.0-rc8.gz dummy=dummy
 module (hd0,1)/vmlinuz-2.6.32.10 dummy=dummy
 root=/dev/mapper/HyperDeskVG01-tcmc--dell--lucid ro
 module (hd0,1)/initrd.img-2.6.32.10
 }
  cut here

Don't forget to change your root= option of your Linux!

  Run update-grub again:

  update-grub

5- Reboot into your new dom0!

  reboot

6- Look if your Xen is up and running

  xm list
  xm info

  .. if not:

 /etc/init.d/xendomains stop
 /etc/init.d/xend stop
 /etc/init.d/xend start
 /etc/init.d/xendomains start

  xm list
  xm info

 -
  Cheers!

Re: [Bug 378240] Re: Please merge xen-3.4 (3.4.0-2) from debian unstable

2010-03-12 Thread Thag
We have been successfully using a xen hypervisor 4.0.0-rc3 build on Ubuntu
9.10.
I would think that packaging either this version or 3.4.x as an interim xen
server release for Ubuntu would be a desirable option as it would provide a
viable migration pack from 8.04 Xen servers.

Unsurprisingly Xen 4.0 has not yet been released. Debian currently has
3.4.3rc3 in testing/squeeze. Lucid still has 3.3.0 and no Xen dom0
kernel. I get the sense that Ubuntu is going to have no path forward for
8.04 Xen servers. That's probably for the best as migrating away from
Ubuntu for Xen server administrators is probably the smartest course of
 action.

Any update on this?

Is this fixed in 9.10, or 10.4?

[Bug 506069] Re: X server crashes with Saw signal 11. Server aborting

2010-01-18 Thread Thag
Just a followup. Still no problems since switching to nvidia-*-195 5 days ago.
This went from multiple times a day to zero in 5 days.

I hesitate to close it as the -180 is still the current ubuntu released
version.

[Bug 506069] Re: X server crashes with Saw signal 11. Server aborting

2010-01-13 Thread Thag
Upgraded to nvidia-*-195 yesterday.
No problems since. Work pattern unchanged, same workload, no issues.
Unless I see it again, I'm blaming this on the nvidia-*-185 driver.
